Luna, who has worked with the catering team for more than six years, utilizes her niche expertise to guide engaged couples through the process of planning the perfect catered wedding. DO LOOK FOR A CATERER THAT SPEAKS TO YOUR INDIVIDUALITY. The online research has begun, and the words “What are the best catering services in my area?” are typed into your Internet browser. DON’T WORRY ABOUT WHAT YOUR GUESTS LIKE TO EAT When couples sit down to discuss the menu for the most important day of their life, it’s best to stay focused on their own personal tastes. When other individuals are considered, picking out food can quickly become overwhelming. “I specifically tell them, you DO HAVE A VISION, A know what you like, and BUDGET AND BE WILLING your guest should be happy with that.” Moreover, any TO COMPROMISE guest allergies and diets will The image of a “country be noted to make modified chic” reception saved to menu items. your wedding board on Pinterest is a replication DON’T BE AFRAID TO of your “I Do” daydream. Kerry Luna is the senior event coordinator and wedding specialist at Randy Peter’s Catering and Events DO AVOID LAST MINUTE GUESTS The RSVP date was set two to three weeks prior to the big day, the deadline has past and a few guests are now requesting attendance three days before the wedding. A catering company will typically allow one-week notice before the wedding for a final head count; food production takes place promptly after this deadline. Ultimately, this common scenario spells trouble. When more guests are added during the catering production, additional fees equate to pay for the guest’s dishware rental, the extra trip to the grocery store, and labor. “A bride deserves to know who is showing up,” Luna stressed. She recommends the couple doge extra charges and call guests as the RSVP date approaches. Photos by Orange Dog Images From an Auburn office to the top of the world, surprises make the best engagements By Elizabeth Adgers O ne day back when I worked at the Auburn Journal, my coworker came over to me at work one day and said, “Hey, there’s a new employee I want to set you up with: He’s really cute and funny.” I rolled my eyes and thought, “Oh great, this should be interesting — but I might as well check it out.” So, I decided to stroll out through the hallway and try to make up conversation and meet this “cute guy.” I walked out and, to my surprise I realized it was the same guy I had been seeing at the local Auburn downtown pub Little Belgium Deli and Beer Bar. I had seen him many different times at the bar, making crude jokes, the hike, he drove me back to my car and we just gave each other a hug. He got into his car and started to pull out of the parking lot. After the resort and went straight swearing like a sailor and entertaining all those who walked in. His name was Mark. I’d made some small talk and remembered him making me and everyone around him laugh. 14 - Spring 2015 I Do!_March.indd 14 3/2/15 4:17 PM up to a mountaintop overlooking Lake Tahoe. Once we arrived at the resort, we talked to the concierge about the trail and were told it would take several hours to hike to the top, and the trail was closed, as they were gearing up for ski season. Little did I know that Mark had called the concierge about the trail a few days before and had been told many times that there is no trail that we can hike, but thanks to Google Maps he spotted trails from a sky view. After establishing that there was indeed a trail to the top of the peak, we decided to start walking over to where we thought the trail began. It was getting late in the afternoon and we had seen construction workers along the beginning of the trail earlier, and I said it probably wasn’t a good idea we go up, since it was going to be dark walking back — not to mention the signs stating the trail was closed and falling rock warnings. “Let’s go on a tomorrow,” I said. hike Mark insisted we go up. Heading up the trail, we kept stopping to listen for sounds of bulldozer equipment, assuming that once the workers saw hikers they would kick us off. Part way up the trail we both paused. “What was that? Shhh…” In the distance we heard a bulldozer coming down the trail. We both looked at each other and said “hide!” We climbed up the embankment and ducked behind the bushes. As they passed we decided to wait in the bushes until all signs were clear. Two dozers, a water truck and a squirrel went by. As were sitting in the dirt waiting to be sure the coast was clear, we heard talking from two people who were holding cameras and heading up the hill. After a few short minutes and a lot of jokes made, we got back out and trucked on upward. It took longer than expected to hike to the top, but the view was a gorgeous 360 span overlooking Squaw Valley on one side and Lake Tahoe on the other. Mark set out a blanket and we popped open some of our favorite Hard Cider. Sitting and overlooking Lake Tahoe, I noticed over my shoulder the couple with cameras taking pictures of us. I said, “That’s weird, they are really taking a lot of photos.” Mark made a few comments like, “Good, maybe they can get a few good ones.” Then Mark took my hand and brought me over to the ledge. At this point I knew something was up, He starting talking about Mark laughed and said, how the long hike up hill “Maybe they can take represented our lives and pictures of us and then that no matter the size of email them to us!” the hill, we will always make it and be on top of the I thought they were with world; and that everything the construction workers or would be okay as long as Squaw’s security. he had each other. The 187-acres of green property nestled in the quiet suburban community appears hidden among willow and oak trees to passersbys; and its serine and open space often welcomes wildlife such as deer, together creating simple and charming wedding space. Since the golf club’s new ownership in 2011 and name change from Sunset Whitney to the Rocklin Golf Club, the property has thrived and is now ranked in the top five percent of local wedding venues, according WeddingWire Network, an online wedding resource for engaged couples. The organization holds its annual Couples Choice Award to highlight wedding services that receive positive online reviews and survey responses. in the hospitality industry for 15 years. “Anything that our clients need we are here –we want everyone to feel like they are at home.” Christina Harris, the Rocklin Golf Club Event Manager, said the familyrun management and staff’s dedication to teamwork drive the success of the venue. During the appointment, the couple takes a tour of the outdoor ceremony site, a gazebo garden that hosts up to 250 guests, located just above Clover Valley Creek. They then walk through a wooden fence gate that leads to the outdoor bar and patio area used for “We provide us as a service,” said Harris, who has worked The typical bride and groomto-be begin to plan their big day at the Rocklin Golf Club with their first appointment with Harris. If the couple craves something that’s off the menu, Harris will work closely with House Chef Jorge Cruz to execute a personal menu that caters to the clients taste. “We always figure it out, we never say no,” said Cruz, who recalled a bride’s request of Kahlua Pork and Cabbage; a I Do!_March.indd 17 dish he admits was a bit out of the ordinary for his staff. The online reviews that contributed to the Rocklin Golf Club’s Couples Choice Award commend the staff’s ability to create the perfect wedding day under the leadership of Harris. “The wedding for my son and his bride was a magical event, perfect from start to finish,” said Laurie Daniels in her WeddingWire review. “Thanks to the solid and steady hand of the event coordinator, Christina, and all of the staff members who were so professional and responsive to our 135 guests,” Daniels son, Corry Daniels, is a golf professional and who said “I do” to his Gibson, 27, said that when he came to work for his father almost three years ago, he quickly learned what it took to run the family business. He watched his mother manage property finances and his father manage employees. He noted that his father was open with his employees about the logistics of his business, which ultimately taught him to treat people like people. “Team effort is the best effort, and I don’t want to trade anyone on our team,” said Gibson. “We maintained this loving, accepting, free speech environment by embracing individuality and that’s how we make money to support our business,” he said. Harris agrees that the positive attention given to employees from the management inspires her personal success and success of her client’s events. “When my rooms sit empty I feel like I have failed my staff because they rely on us to bring a paycheck home,” she said. “We provide excellent service because of our dedication to each other and our clients.” 3/2/15 4:17 PM Photo by Anne Stokes Photo by Anne Stokes The miracles of a vintage wedding are all about planning ahead By Anne Stokes N ancy Tilford is an outside-the-box type of thinker. The owner of Gypsy Chic Vintage Market in downtown Lincoln opted to take an unconventional approach at making a living after the economy slumped six years ago. “I needed to find a way to bring money in,” said Tilford. “I don’t like punching-in from nine to five, and so I started buying and selling [antiques] on EBay and I realized it would be more fun to sell in a store.” That store, Gypsy Chic, now lures antique hunters and collectors from all over Placer County and beyond. The catch? It’s only open four days a month. “Gypsy Chic is not so much a store as an event,” explains Tilford. “We have a new theme each month bringing new vintage decor, furniture, jewelry, and clothing to the public. We change it each month so it stays fresh; we keep our inventory really fresh.” month brings a new theme and new surprises. “It’s just a great shop with a lot going on,” Tilford noted. Once you’ve determined what you need, the hunt takes a little longer than just ordering up twelve of something. Kajimura also advises brides to give themselves plenty of time and opportunity to find the right decor for their big event. “I did an amazing vintage/ rustic chic wedding last fall that was absolutely amazing!” she explained. “The bride and her mom actually brought me a photo of a display they saw inside of Gypsy Chic when Nancy did her ‘Wedding Pop Up Shop.’ The mother of the bride is also an antique guru and spent months collecting vintage and antique items to use as decor for the wedding. She collected a hundred sets of silver plate flatware, silver plate trays, mercury glass, crystal candelabras, and all sorts of other beautiful knick knacks. The wedding would not have been so beautiful without all of the items that she spent months and months collecting. Even after all of her time and money spent, they still needed to rent lots of things from my inventory to achieve the look they were going for.” the look. For instance, most weddings have tables covered with tablecloths to the floor. But you could rent vintage tables and leave the tablecloths off and see the beautiful legs on the furniture. That creates a much more unique looking wedding than just tablecloths on tables with something vintage on top.” Tilford also advises brides to think outside the box when it comes to their wedding decor. “Vintage can be a lot of different things,” she explains. “Look at things that you have at a wedding that can be changed to be vintage and really change “Chandeliers are a big bling for weddings,” said Tilford. “You can hang them in the tents for outdoors or you can use them indoors. Chandeliers are like putting the wedding ring on your finger. It’s that added touch.” A Publication by Gold Country Media I Do!_March.indd 19 Other wedding trends include chalk boards in vintage frames, French doors, and silver plate serving pieces.
