Obama Foundation promises community partnerships

Staff Writer
The Obama Foundation’s recently
appointed Vice President of Civic
Engagement, Michael Strautmanis,
assured neighborhood residents, at
a 5th Ward meeting, Tuesday,
March 22, that the community will
hold significant weight in upcoming
dialogues surrounding the Obama
Presidential Center (OPC).
Strautmanis is a Chicago native
with close ties to the Obamas. He
acted as a close aide to the president
throughout his first term in the
White House and for a time served
as Chief of Staff to Senior Advisor
Valerie Jarrett.
This was one of several community meetings Strautmanis said he
would have when the foundation
announced that it would be moving
to Hyde Park last November.
At Tuesday’s meeting, which took
place at Bret Harte Elementary
School, 1556 E. 56th St., Strautma-
nis maintained that the OPC would
be a community-driven institution.
“[The Obamas] want it to be a
place that inspires civic engagement,” Strautmanis said. “It will tell
a story of their presidency, but they
also want it to be connected to the
community—to be alive.”
Strautmanis aimed to dispel any
notions that the University of
Chicago (U. of C.) is running the
show.
“Some people believe this is run
by the University of Chicago,” he
said. “It is not.”
While the U. of C. submitted the
winning bid that ultimately brought
the Obama Foundation and the OPC
to the South Side of Chicago,
Strautmanis said that the university
only serves as a partner, of which
the Obama Foundation has many.
“[U. of C.] is an important partner
but we have several other partners,”
Strautmanis said.
When Strautmanis was pressed for
the identities of the other partners,
he named public sector groups such
as Chicago’s City Council and various government agencies, private
foundations across the city, academic institutions and interest
groups such as the Jackson Park
Advisory Council.
“Our intention is to do this in partnership with the community,”
Strautmanis said. “And I do believe
my presence here denotes the importance of the community’s role
throughout the process.”
After the meeting, community
member Judith L. Sensibar remained skeptical about Strautmanis’s promise of community
inclusion.
“I want to know, who are the
money partners?” Sensibar said,
pointing to the idea that the foundation might be more accountable to
the groups bankrolling the project
than the community. “The University of Chicago is a major player
here, and it’s not so interested in
what the community thinks.”

Strautmanis said he plans on making future appearances at community meetings, but gave no schedule.
After estimating that the OPC
would have an opening date in 2021
or 2022, Strautmanis said, “We’ll
have a lot of conversations. There’s
a lot of work to do between here and
then.”

While Diwan acknowledged that
her survey could not guarantee a
representative sample of community members or prevent multiple
voting, she did note that the process
garnered responses from more people than would have ever showed up
to a park advisory council meeting.
“I think it was a great resource,”
Diwan said. “Parents are online all
the time now, and it’s so easy to get
quick feedback.”
Though the results of the survey
were non-binding, Diwan said that
NPAC took the results into consideration and actually ended up voting in favor of the same options.
Franklin said the survey helped to
streamline the procedure.

distributed it amongst local parents.
Diwan received over 300 responses to her survey. She presented

while the playground options provoked mostly positive responses,
some community members were
discontent with the amount of

complexes.

people might have liked to see more
wooden equipment.”
Franklin said that construction on
the new playgrounds will begin
sometime next Fall.

April 1 Day of Action for teachers approved by CTU

Staff Writer
The Chicago Teacher’s Union
(CTU) voted in favor of a daylong
walkout for April 1st.
CTU voted 486 to 124 to authorize the Day of Action at a union
meeting March 23. The Day of Action was organized in response to
Chicago Public Schools’ (CPS)
plans to cut teachers’ pay by 7 percent in April.
CTU describes the Day of Action
as a day “to build our momentum
by joining thousands of parents,
community members and other
labor organizations.”
The other organizations that will
participate in the Day of Action include United Electrical Workers
Western Region, Fight for $15 and
Chicago State University Faculty
Union.
Community groups such as the
Kenwood-Oakland Community Organization, Black Lives Matter
Chicago and Parents for Teachers
will also join in on the day.
CTU is asking its members to
begin picketing at their respective
schools at 6:30 a.m. Teachers will
not be in school classrooms on this
day and will not be paid.
In preparation for this event, community activist Lakeisha Hamilton
has secured two locations for children to go to on this day if they need
supervision.
The United Church of Hyde Park,
1448 E. 53rd St., will take in children from kindergarten through
sixth grade. The University Church
of Chicago, 5655 S. University
Ave., will host kids from seventh
through 12th grade.
The hours of the sites are 8 a.m.
until 4 p.m. and students should arrive with a lunch and $5.
To register your student at one of
these locations, contact Hamilton at
lilkee@umich.edu. Hamilton is also
looking for volunteers to supervise
the locations as well.
The Hyde Park Neighborhood
Club, 5480 S. Kenwood Ave., will
also take in kids that day as part of
their “No-School Vacation Days”
for $50 to $60.
CPS CEO Forrest Claypool responded to CTU’s announcement
saying in a written statement,
“We’re particularly disappointed
that the CTU leadership has given
Governor [Bruce] Rauner more ammunition in his misguided attempt
to bankrupt and take over Chicago
Public Schools.”

DuSable Museum partners with the Smithsonian

The DuSable Museum of African
American History, 740 E. 56th Pl.,
announced, March, 23, that it is beginning a collaborative partnership
with the Smithsonian Institution in
Washington, D.C. The museum’s
recently granted “Smithsonian Af-
filiation” will allow DuSable to borrow Smithsonian artifacts and access traveling exhibits. The
partnership will also provide the
Smithsonian with access to DuSable’s rarely seen paintings and
sculptures.
DuSable President and CEO Perri
Irmer applauded the partnership,
which she said would offer the
Hyde Park museum global recognition.
“With Affiliate status, DuSable
will bring the Smithsonian to the
community and DuSable to the
world,” Irmer said. “The partnership
will also expose the museum’s Masterworks Collection to a broader audience by giving the work and the
artists international exposure.”
With the partnership, Dusable will
also be able to offer Smithsonian
memberships at discounted rates to
its members.
Irmer said, “Now members of the
DuSable museum will gain access
to more than 200 institutions worldwide.”
DuSable is Chicago’s second institution to gain Smithsonian Affili-
ate status, the first being the Adler
Planetarium.
Over 200 Smithsonian Affiliate
organizations exist across 45 states,
Puerto Rico and Panama. Including
the DuSable, there are now six affiliates in Illinois.

Jamie Kalven awarded Ridenhour Courage Prize

Hyde Park-based journalist Jamie
Kalven is the 2016 recipient of The
Ridenhour Courage Prize, an award
given out by the Nation Institute
and Fertel Foundation that recognizes an individual’s “courageous
and life-long defense of the public
interest and passionate commitment
to social justice.”
Kalven, the founder and executive
director of the journalistic production company the Invisible Institute,
has garnered national attention recently for his in-depth coverage of
issues of police misconduct.
In February, Kalven received the
2016 George Polk award for Local
Reporting.
The Ridenhour Courage Prize selection committee pointed to Kalven’s work surrounding the Laquan
McDonald case as well his efforts
in making public over 56,000 police
misconduct complaints, which he
and his team organized into a database available at cpdp.co.
“Jamie Kalven has for decades
fought bravely to protect truthtellers while as a journalist helping
amplify their stories,” the selection
committee said. “Kalven’s incisive
reporting in Slate’s ‘16 Shots’ gave
voice to a courageous source who
revealed the official police narrative’s cover-up in the shooting of
Laquan McDonald. The still anonymous Whistleblower disclosed the
existence of the dash-cam video of
the shooting that ultimately resulted
in national outrage…. We are honored to award Jamie Kalven and the
Invisible Institute the 2016 Riden-
hour Courage Prize for this potent
combination of fearless reporting
and proven human rights advocacy.”
Kalven said his first reaction after
learning that he received the prize
was to recall one of his father’s favorite quotes.
“My first reaction when I learned

Prize was to recall a Robert Benchley line my father enjoyed quoting:
‘You must be thinking of the other
Mozart,’” Kalven said. “My second

Local teachers recognized
Ray Elementary School, 5631 S. Kimbark
Ave., Principal Megan Thole and Ray teacher
Andrea McGehee were recognized as part of
the 2016 class of the National Board Certified
Chicago Public Schools (CPS) teachers.
Thole and McGehee were part of a group of
teachers that engaged in over a year’s worth
of voluntary self-analysis and taking a closer
look at their teaching methods in order to improve themselves and their students.
Being a National Board Certified Teacher
(NBCT) is the highest gold standard any
teacher can receive. According to CPS, the
district has the most Board-certified teachers
than any other urban school district in the
country.

Herman Cohn “A Mayor of Hyde Park” remembered
Herman Cohn
Herman Cohn died Monday, March 21, in
Hyde Park. He was 94.
The life of Herman Cohn was a life welllived. He served his country bravely, he
served his community tirelessly and he served
his men’s store customers with flair. In
Cohn’s heyday, some called him the unofficial “Mayor of Hyde Park,” but he was most
proud to be called patriarch of the Cohn family.
Cohn was born in Germany on September
8, 1921, and lived a comfortable childhood
until his world was turned upside down by
Nazi atrocities. He was lucky to make his escape in 1939, on the last Kindertransport. The
following year, he and his family settled in
Chicago’s Hyde Park neighborhood, where
other family members had moved. Cohn
wasted no time in getting acclimated. He also
wasted no time in courting his soon-to-bewife, Elsa Kahn.
When the U.S. entered WWII, Cohn enlisted in the army and became a valuable
asset, since he spoke German and knew the
landscape in Germany. Right after D-Day, he
landed on Omaha Beach and, later, his troop
was one of those sent to liberate Dachau Concentration Camp, with no idea of the horrors
to be found there. Cohn’s letters to Kahn eloquently recounted his experiences. He felt
strongly that he had to say the unspeakable
and bring these horrors to light.
Some years ago, Cohn was interviewed for
Steven Spielberg’s “Shoah.” Last year, he was
interviewed and showcased in Emmanuel
Rotstein’s “The Liberators” for The History
Channel – Germany. Along with other liberators and survivors of Dachau, Cohn was honored last spring in Munich, during the initial
screening of the documentary and during
events surrounding the 70th anniversary of the
liberation of Dachau. The documentary was
just shown in the U.S. last November, on The
History Channel.
Back home after the war, Cohn purchased a
dry cleaners business and, then, partnering
with Eric Stern, he opened Cohn & Stern
Men’s Store, which lasted as a Hyde Park institution for 54 years. Cohn counted politicians, White Sox players, Nobel Prize
winners and entertainers among his customers. The store closed in 2006.
Hyde Park Herald Publisher Bruce Sagan,
who first met Cohn in 1953, said that Cohn
was a remarkable Hyde Park resident who
stuck with the neighborhood through its different eras.
“He cared passionately about the community,” Sagan said. “He was one of the people
that created the environment in the neighborhood.”

lifetime of giving to others. He was the go-to
person for so many extended family members. They came to expect his famous lists and
itineraries and he didn’t disappoint. In his extended community of South Shore and Hyde
Park, he served on many boards including the
South East Chicago Commission and the
Hyde Park YMCA. He also served as President of the Hyde Park Chamber of Commerce
and Congregation Habonim.
As difficult as some of Cohn’s early life
was, he would be the first to tell you that the
hardest thing he ever had to do was watch his
beloved Elsa, after 65 wonderful years of
marriage, suffer from Alzheimer’s disease for
years before her death in 2009. As a husband,
Cohn defined the word “devotion.”
“To see the twinkle in Cohn’s eyes, the huge
smile and the way his whole face would light
up in the presence of his grandchildren and
great-grandchildren, was to experience what
pure joy and love were all about,” said Phyl-
lis Cohn, his daughter-in-law.
Dapper, raconteur, witty, warm, loving and
family man, would be some of the words to
describe Cohn, Phyllis Cohn said. While short
in stature, he stood tall in everyone’s eyes.
He is survived by his loving children:
Howard (Phyllis) Cohn, Dr. David (Valerie)
Cohn, Joyce (David) Feuer; his adoring
grandchildren, to whom he was Papa, Lauren
(Jeffrey) Kovach, Joshua Cohn, Dana (David)
Kite, Amy Feuer (Isiah Parker), Zachary
(Ashley) Cohn, Aaron Feuer; his precious
great-grandchildren Jori Parker, Sienna Kite
and Maxwell Cohn; and his dear Margot
Eisenhammer, as well as many loving nieces,
nephews and cousins around the world.
Services will be held at Congregation Rodfei Zedek, 5200 S. Hyde Park Blvd., on Monday, March 28, at 1 p.m., with interment
immediately following at Jewish Oakridge
Cemetery, 4301 W. Roosevelt Rd.

There was some good news for local
voters on March 15 — including a heartening uptick in turnout, with more than
11,000 voters in my race alone casting
ballots to support a platform built on a
commitment to the retirement security
of our seniors, quality neighborhood
public schools for our kids, and accountability to working families. That’s
a powerful testament to committed, issues-based grassroots organizing that
lives well beyond Election Day.
Yet as activists, organizers and engaged residents, we must add a critical
issue to our list of concerns: fair and
transparent elections — and the right of
every registered voter to cast a ballot for
the candidate of their choice.

Dorothy Naomi Eldridge
Green passed away on March
14. She was 89.
Hyde Park resident Dorothy
Naomi Eldridge Green was
born on July 31, 1926 in
Chicago to Johnella and
Charles Henry Eldridge. The
second child to her older sister, Harriet Elizabeth Eldridge.
Eldridge Green attended
John Farren Elementary
School, DuSable High
School and graduated with a
degree in teaching and liberty
science at Pestalozzi-Frobel
Teacher’s College.
She was a member of Progressive Community Church
for over 80 years and taught
Sunday school for over 60
years.
Eldridge Green pledged
Sigma Gamma Rho in 1951
and as an adolescent, she was
a member of the first black
Girl Scout group in Chicago.
She was a classically trained
singer and pianist. She also
had a long career as a Librarian at the George Hall Branch
of the Chicago Public Library. Eldridge Green taught
as a substitute teacher until

Eldridge
2010.
She met her future husband,
Oliver Green, in early 1950
and on October 23, 1955,
they were married. Their
marriage provided two sons,
Oliver Eldridge Green and
Charles Henry Green. She
encouraged them in sports,
the arts, and education, especially after her husband’s
passing in 1989.
Eldridge Green leaves behind her loving sister, Harriet, two adoring sons, Oliver
and Charles, and a host of
other relatives and friends.

The HPNC girls junior roller derby league starts training

The Second City Slaughter Jr. Roller Derby
team held its first fundamental camp for girls
ages 8-18, March 26, at the Hyde Park
Neighborhood Club.
“This is my first season as an instructor with
the Second City Slaughter,” said Ragner
Rockner, roller derby instructor for the Hyde
Park Neighborhood Club, , 5480 S. Kenwood
Ave.
“My goal is to instill fundamentals in
skaters who are both experienced an inexperienced in the field of roller derby, ” Rockner
said.
In session one of the roller derby camp,
Rockner provided inexperienced skaters with
a simulated obstacle course, that was designed to help the participants overcome
fears, anxieties and collisions of a real life
roller derby situation.
“We understand that some of these young
ladies are skating for the first time,” Rockner
said. “It’s our job to put them in the safest situation possible.”
To close out session two and three of the
camp, Rockner divided each skater into three
groups (level 1, level 2, and level 3). Teaching
them the importance of crossing methods ,
when a skater learns to avoid contact, stopping methods, when a skater learns to stop
after a sprint and changing speeds, when a
skater changes motions to adapt to the speed

for athletes throughout the community.
According to the National Athletic Trainers’
Association, National Athletic Training
Month is held every March in order to spread
awareness about all that athletic trainers do.
Leonard said that many athletes obtain injuries when they change their workout routines coming out of the “off season.” He said
the most common injuries that occur among
athletes are shin splints, pulled hamstrings,
calf strains and sore arm/shoulders.
“As Hyde Park athletes start to hit the field
we think it’s a great time to inform the public
about these tips,” said Leonard, who has a
Master’s Degree in Physical Education in Cardio (Eastern Illinois University) and a certification in Performance Enhancement therapy.
As an Athletico trainer, he has worked as
Head Athletic Trainer for Hillcrest High
School, Assistant and Head Athletic Trainer
of Major League Soccer’s Chicago Fire and a
Certified Athletic Trainer/Intern for the National Football League Chicago Bears during
the 2007 season.
Leonard recommends that athletes follow
these three fitness tips before playing a sport
or working out:
Take it slow:
“Most young athletes often have a lot of pent
up energy from inactivity during the winter
months,” Leonard said. “Going too fast or too
soon can be a “recipe for an injury.”
Take time to stretch:

Leonard said most athletes like to focus
on strengthening their arms and legs and neglect their core muscle groups. He said core
muscle exercises would help improve an athlete’s speed, agility and explosiveness on the
field.
Leonard, who has been a trainer for 11
years, said his passion is to change how most
athletes prepare both mentally, physically,
and holistically during the off season.
“My main objective is to help an athlete perform at its highest level,” Leonard said. “So
that they will perform at an elite level on the
field.”

The South Side with Natalie Moore and Rick Perlstein

Lecture Series at International House will
partner with the UChicago Urban Network,
the Center for the Study of Race, Politics and
Culture, and the Seminary Co-op Bookstore
to present “The South Side: A Portrait of
Chicago and American Segregation.”
WBEZ’s Natalie Moore will discuss her new
book The South Side, which focuses on underserved communities in south Chicago. She
will be joined by Rick Perlstein, author of Invisible Bridge: The Fall of Nixon and the Rise
of Reagan.
In her new book, Moore, a WBEZ reporter
and South Side native, addresses a fundamental issue facing the city of Chicago: segregation on the South Side. While Chicago is
well known for being a modern, metropolitan,
global city, it also remains one of the most
segregated cities in the country. Moore ex-
amines and criticizes the urban policies that
exclude African Americans on the South Side
from the social integration and economic success enjoyed by white Chicagoans elsewhere
in the city. Moore sees segregation at work in
Chicago Public Schools, housing initiatives,
and other city policies.
Moore brings a well-informed perspective
to this topic. She’s a native Chicagoan who
grew up in Chatham and remains passionate
about her community. As reported by the
Chicago Tribune, she chose to pursue a career
in journalism in part to highlight the “vibrant
black communities” that local news outlets
seemed to fail to capture. Covering these
communities has proven to be a successful career path for Moore, who has received both
the Studs Terkel Community Media Award
and a Casey Medal for Meritorious Journalism. She aims to change perceptions about
the South Side and spark consequential conversations about race through her writing and
reporting.
The event’s other guest, New York Times
best-selling author and journalist Rick Perlstein, has also had a successful career in journalism. An alumnus of the University of
Chicago, Perlstein is an accomplished historian and critic of American conservatism.
Pearlstein recently wrote a biting essay for the
Baffler, “There Goes the Neighborhood,” critiquing the placement of the Obama library
on the South Side of Chicago. He discusses
the racial tensions behind the location decision, corrupt Chicago politics, and concerns
about gentrification on the South Side. Both
strong critics of the unjust city policies that
promote segregation and harm African Americans communities, Perlstein and Moore will
combine historical and modern issues with a
look toward the future of the South Side.
This discussion is one of over 200 Global
Voices events hosted every year, ranging from
cultural performances to political debates, and
fits in with International House’s larger goal
of serving as a “Host of the World.” By al-
lowing various voices from our local community and around the world to be heard,
Global Voices encourages a richer discussion
of political, cultural, and intellectual topics.

New Hyde Park-based choir for seniors formed

A new choir is in town geared at senior
singers that are looking to spark back some
creativity through song.
The national chorale organization, Encore,
is dedicated to providing adults ages 55 and
older with professionally conducted chorale
programs. Encore is bringing two opportunities to get involved Illinois with new chorales
in Evanston and Hyde Park.
Artistic Director and Conductor, Jonathan
Miller, will be holding the six-week session
at Montgomery Place, 5550 S. Shore Ave.,
beginning April 13 which will be held every
Wednesday morning from 9:30 a.m. until 11
a.m. in the East Room. Miller, who has al-
ways had a passion for composing music and
singing, is excited to bring seniors this kind
of program, especially since he has had personal experience with the benefits.
“My wife and I both have aging parents and
I have watched some of those people that we
have lost be very active and engage and others not so much,” Miller said. “I realized what
a gift Encore is to keep people active and
healthy.”
According to a 2006 study from the National Endowment for the Arts, known as The
Creativity Aging Study, the average life expectancy for older adults who participated in
a weekly creative group program had a higher
life expectancy than older adults who just
kept to their daily routines.
“These results point to powerful positive in-
tervention effects of these community-based
art programs run by professional artists. They
point to true health promotion and disease
prevention effects,” reports the official study.
Miller said he hopes to bring these types of
benefits to the Hyde Park chorale. Anyone
can sign up for the open six-week sessionnot just Montgomery Place residents-and any
skill level of singing is welcome.
“There are a lot of people who have sung
their whole lives or haven’t sung for a while
and just want to get back into it,” Miller said.
“You just have to have the desire to sing.”
Miller will teach the chorale five songs
which they will perform at a free community
concert at Montgomery Place on May 22 at 2
p.m. Miller said he wanted to make the songs
both fun to sing and relatable.
“We have songs like ‘Chicago (That Toddlin’ Town)’, folk songs and melodies and our
signature song, ‘When I’m 64’ by The Beatles,” he said.
Miller said he hopes to have about 30
singers and mentioned that he already has a
few people registered, who ironically, were
his friends’ parents when he was growing up
in Hyde Park.
“Giving back to them is going to be enjoyable,” he said. “Anything I can do to support
my parents generation is worth it.”

11th annual “Taste of Hyde Park”
fundraising event, Saturday, April 2,

get information about this organization out there,” Anderson said.

being on the board or being a mentor for our clients.”
Anderson explained that the organization does not focus on those
individuals that are chronically
homeless, but instead concentrates
popular and best-selling books on a smartphone or tablet for free.

Eighth graders from Bret Harte Elementary
School and senior residents at Montgomery
Place had the chance to spend an afternoon together through WTTW’s program, Grandparent Connection.
On March 23, 38 students from Bret Harte,
1556 E. 56th St., visited their neighbors at
Montgomery Place, 5550 S. Shore Dr., for an
intergenerational and interactive program of
singing, dancing and games.
The Grandparent Connection program visits six senior centers in the Chicago area each
year to collaborate with kids from a nearby
school. Account Executive of WTTW, Grace
Winston, said that it has proven beneficial for
both the kids and the seniors.
“Especially in a place like Chicago where
people move here from all over, a lot of children don’t get to interact with seniors much
because their grandparents might live elsewhere,” she said. “Same thing with the seniors; they either don’t have grandchildren or
their grandchildren live far away.”
The program brings PBS personality Lori
Holton Nash, known as Miss Lori from Miss
Lori’s CAMPUS, who guides the kids and
seniors through sing-alongs, dancing and
games. Skills like hand-eye coordination, exercising and socializing benefit both kids’ development and seniors’ motor skills.
The students were not shy about going up to
residents and introducing themselves, even
making some friends along the way.
On the senior side, Montgomery Place resident Mae Wygant said she was delighted to
meet the kids.
“When we go for walks we pass the school
all the time, so it’s nice to finally get to see
the kids and meet them,” she said. “It was a
pleasure to see these beautiful, smiling faces
and was a wonderful way to start the afternoon.”
Bret Harte students visit Montgomery Place
every year for their annual holiday concert,
but this event was an opportunity for the kids
not in the school choir to meet their fellow
neighbors and community members.
“I think the children are enjoying it and
meeting some of the people who live right
down the street,” said third grade teacher at
Bret Harte, Sandy Summers. “I think it’s a
great way for them to give back to the community.”

First Thursdays discounts
HP businesses to offer deals and activities on first Thursdays

Thursday nights are about to be the popular
night out in Hyde Park through the new First
Thursday events.
Beginning April 7, every first Thursday of
the month will mean special discounts, deals
and activities at neighborhood businesses.
Over 40 restaurants and stores are participating on the kick-off event on April 7 from 53rd
Street to 57th Street.
The monthly event is a collaboration from
organizations such as the University of
Chicago, the Southeast Chicago Commission
and the Hyde Park Chamber of Commerce.
Wallace Goode, the executive director of the
Chamber, said that other communities in
Chicago have similar monthly events that
have proven to be beneficial for the neighborhood and its businesses. The Uptown neighborhood has Uptown Saturday Nights and
Pilsen has Second Fridays; both have proven
to be beneficial for their respective communities and the businesses that make them up.
“Feet on the street creates an active buzz in
the community and then having feet on the
street is also going in and out of our businesses which is good for the businesses,”
Goode said.
Hyde Park’s First Thursdays will be from 6
p.m. until 9 p.m., which is plenty of time to
benefit from the discounts from favorite
neighborhood establishments. Deals include
things such as buy one get one, money off of
a purchase and free drinks or food. Both small
businesses and corporate chains are participating.
Some deals include 10 percent off of an
order when a customer mentions “First Thursday” at both Litehouse Whole Food Grill,
1373 E. 53rd St., and Mikkey’s Retro Grill,
5319 S. Hyde Park Blvd.; free drinks and a 15
percent discount at Sir & Madame, 5225 S.
Harper Ct.; all day Happy Hour prices at
Yusho, 1301 E. 53rd St., and free meditation
session with complimentary tea from Chaturanga Holistic Fitness, 1525 E. 55th St.
While April 7 is the first event of many
monthly nights, there are already plans in
store for next month’s First Thursday to expand the choices and activites.
“Choose Chicago will start having ‘instagreeters’ beginning our second First Thursday
on May 5,” Goode said. “They will be offering free one-hour walking tours of Hyde Park
that start at Ancien Cycles.”
The event is meant to engage people, both
from the community and outside of Hyde
Park, to have a full night of dining, shopping
and entertainment all while staying in the
neighborhood.
“Hyde Park is a walking community and
when you have more and more activity going
on, it energizes everyone,” Goode said. “We
want it to become a destination night.”

Young singers
command the
stage at Lyric
Opera’s Rising
Stars concert

Lyric Opera of Chicago’s Patrick G. and
Shirley W. Ryan Opera Center is a training
program for young, emerging opera singers
which offers instruction and performance opportunities for talented singers. The Rising
Stars concert is an annual event that turns the
main stage at the Civic Opera House over exclusively to these newcomers, so they can put
their skills on display.
The most recent Rising Stars concert was
Saturday night and over a dozen young performers were part of a sparkling, finely executed event. In addition to fine singing,
supported by buoyant playing from the Lyric
Opera Orchestra, the program itself was a
splendid array of fine opera excerpts that eschewed the usual well-trodden arias and
overly familiar music in favor of arias, duets,
trios and quartets less often heard.
The young singers were up to the task, creating an evening of good singing and splendid
entertainment.
The concert opened with South African soprano Hlengiwe Mkhwanazi singing Mozart.
The Act II aria, “Dal tuo gentil sembiante”
from “Ascanio in Alba” sounded fresh and the
singer has a natural easiness on stage. She
was also outfitted in one of the most attractive gowns of the evening, a full-skirted red
dress full of glitter that sparkled from every
angle.
Tenor Minglie Lei, mezzo-soprano Annie
Rosen and soprano Diana Newman joined
forces for the Act II trio, “À la faveur de cette
nuit obscure” from Rossini’s “Le Comte Ory.”
Lei was beautifully restrained and the women
effected a beautiful blend of sound. This was
one the first of many vignettes of the evening
that displayed the fine acting qualities of the
singers, as they drew out the comedic elements of the scene. (Perhaps to enhance the
comedy, Newman’s slim purple gown less resembled a dress and appeared more like a
crumpled envelope.)
Tenor Jonathan Johnson took on the Act IV
aria “O blonde Cérès,” from “Les Troyens”
by Berlioz. His interpretation was thoughtful
although a times a bit bland.
Baritone Takaoki Onishi and Mezzo Lindsa
Metzger created a lively duet from Rossini’s
“The Barber of Seville.” In “Dunque io son?”
Rosina learns from Figaro that the man she
cares for returns her affection. Onishi was
suave and confident and Metzger had effervescence and sported the most scrumptious
dress of the night: a long red number, off one
shoulder and with a flowing cape off the other
shoulder.
Baritone Anthony Clark Evans gave a commanding performance in an excerpt from
Verdi’s “Ernani.” His “Gran’ Dio! …Oh, de’
verd’anni miei” showed off his powerful projection and excellent dynamics. The drama
Ryan Opera Center Ensemble Members with program directors Craig Terry, Julia Faulkner
and Dan Novak and Lyric general director Anthony Freud.
Robert Kusel
was spot-on and the entire performance was
gripping.
Bass Patrick Guetti was utterly perfect in
his treatment of Bottom’s monologue from
Benjamin Britten‘s “A Midsummer Night’s
Dream.” He knew exactly when to abandon
attractive singing with admirable resonance
in favor of occasional squeaky sounds and his
physical comedy was tremendous. Here was a
handsome man decked out in glorious
evening wear who completely convinced us
he was Shakespeare’s silly ass.
Soprano Laura Wilde took on the Act II
monologue and prayer from Janacek’s “Jenufa” and infused it with wild, palpable feeling. It is no surprise that she will take on the
leading role in this opera this summer at the
English National Opera.
The opening scene from Carlisle Floyd’s
“Of Mice and Men” was given a riveting performance by bass-baritone Richard Ollarsaba
as George and Jesse Donner as Lennie. Their
fascinating portrayals makes one hope that
Lyric will consider staging the opera sometime soon.
Tenor Alec Carlson, Soprano Diana Newman as well as Mkhwanazi and Lei were engaging in the Act II quartet from Mozart’s
“Die Entfürhrung aus dem Serail.”
Throughout the evening Michael Christie,
music director of the Minnesota Opera, deftly
led the Lyric Opera Orchestra. But after the
intermission, Ryan Center pianist Mario Antonia Marra took the podium and conducted
the overture from Verdi’s “Luisa Miller,” creating exciting music.
Wilde and Evans returned to the stage for
“Sie wollen mich heiraten” from Richard
Strauss’s “Arabella.” This love duet had many
pretty moments, but failed to capture a sense
of love.
Tenor Jesse Donner gave an earnest rendition of the Prince’s Act I aria from Dvorak’s
“Rusalka” while Ollarsaba’s Drum-Major
Song from “Le Caïd” by Ambroise Thomas
was bursting with good fun and was thoroughly amusing.
Tenor Jonathan Johnson joined Rosen for a
dramatic and heartfelt excerpt from Poulenc’s
“Dialogues of the Carmelites.”
The final two numbers were entertaining
quartets (the very last found all the Ryan Center members on stage) from Friedrich von
Flotow’s “Martha” and Puccini’s “La rondine” and brought to a close a concert which
proved that these young singers are folks to
watch.

“Long Day’s Journey Into Night”

O
f all the production I’ve seen of “Long
Day’s Journey Into Night,” a play so
personal Eugene O’Neill didn’t want
it ever to be produced (and stipulated it
shouldn’t be published until 25 years after his
death), Court Theatre’s is the most suffused
with sorrow and forgiveness. Yes, the resentments, recriminations, and barely repressed
rage that tear the Tyrones apart are apparent in
abundance, but they’re tempered by so many
regrets and so much sadness that we truly
sense the love that binds these deeply flawed
people together.
Directed by playwright David Auburn
(“Proof”), the three-and-a-half-hour-long
show highlights the shifting alliances among
the family members as they hash over the past
and agonize about the present and future.
They’re all also in denial about something,
even as they’re smart enough to recognize the
self-deceptions driving their refusal to accept,
or even acknowledge, the realities. The atmosphere is toxic, yet the director, unlike
many, manages to capture a certain amount of
humor.
Harris Yulin’s subdued performance as
aging actor James Tyrone sets the tone. He
comes across as a man beaten down by life,
with little of the dash and bravura of the matinee idol he’s supposed to have been. His love
for his wife, Mary, is palpable, and his heart
doesn’t seem to be in his angry arguments
with his sons. His worst traits—stinginess,
self-absorption, self-righteousness, etc.—
come through, but his oft-repeated tropes,
such as admonishing the boys for not knowing “the value of a dollar,” don’t have as much
of the usual obnoxious ring. When, in the last
act, he talks about peaking at 27 and regretting that he traded his chance to be a great
Shakespearean actor for the easy money of
endlessly repeating a popular role, it isn’t the
revelation of someone who’s been putting up
a good front, but we do feel sorry for him.
The bravura instead belongs to Mary Beth
Fisher’s Mary Cavon Tyrone, who owns every
scene she’s in. Fully aware and unhappy that
her husband and sons are watching her like a
hawk for signs of a relapse into morphine addiction, she’s alternately self-conscious and
very talkative. As the drug takes hold, she
goes through stages, for example, lashing out,
especially against James, then breaking down
apologetically in tears. Distraught over Edmund’s illness, she denies that it’s anything
more serious than a cold but, in one outburst,
shows that she knows better. She relives the
past over and over, blaming James’ miserliness for everything from the doctors responsible for her condition to the second-hand car
that causes her embarrassment. Overwhelmed
by loneliness, she begs even the maid Cathleen (Alanna Rogers) not to leave her, yet she
retreats into the safety of the memories of her
idealized life in the convent and her first
meeting with the great James Tyrone. Fisher
is terrific at every turn, simultaneously mercurial and nuanced, so we—like the other
characters—are never sure what’s going to
come next.
For Michael Doonan’s Edmund, the object
of his mother’s guilt as well as anguish, the
need to be heard and accepted by both parent’s is paramount. Doonan does a good job
as the younger son suffering from tuberculosis and a lot of pent-up feelings, except for the
fact that he doesn’t seem very sick at all. He
even delivers some pretty long speeches without a single cough.
As older brother James Tyrone, Jr., or Jamie,
Dan Waller doesn’t really strike one as the alcoholic failed actor who haunts the Broadway
cafes and whore houses, but he comes into his
own in the drunken scene in the last act (all
the men are addicted to alcohol), starting with
stumbling over the front steps. In a long, rambling lecture saturated with equal measures of
love and hate, he warns Edmund not to trust
him because he’s a bad influence who wants
his brother to be a failure like himself. Waller
lapses into an Irish accent and clipped sentences, which doesn’t make total sense but
sort of works.
Jack Magaw’s scenic design apparently
replicates the O’Neill summer cottage in Connecticut, but one of the most notable things
about it is the way the house is set in the mid-
dle of a blackened stage, emphasizing the isolation that’s exacerbated when the fog rolls in.
Lee Keenan’s lighting contributes to this unsettling effect, as does Victoria Deiorio’s
music and sound design. The costumes, by
Melissa Torchia, reflect the period, 1912,
well.
I sometimes find O’Neill’s plays too talky
and melodramatic, but the pain and humanity
in Court’s “Long Day’s Journey Into Night”
more than compensate.

“B
utler” is set in the commander’s
office at Fort Monroe, Virginia, in
the first month of the Civil War,
but Richard Strand’s play has the same appeal
as a good courtroom drama. We witness a series of arguments highlighted by cagey legal
maneuvering and have the satisfaction of seeing the right side prevail in the end.
Basically, Strand fictionalizes the specifics
of a real incident that arguably hastened the
end of slavery. On May 23, 1861, three young
black men—Shepard Mallory, Frank Baker
and James Townsend—fleeing the Confederacy, where they’d been forced to build fortifications, stole a boat, rowed across the James
River, and sought asylum in the Union-held
citadel under Major General Benjamin
Franklin
Butler. Since the Constitution and the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850 required that all runaway slaves be returned to their masters, in
this case rebel Colonel Charles Mallory, Butler, a lawyer who had only recently taken up
his military post, knew he had to deny their
request. But he feared for their lives, so he
found a way around it that cannily turned on
the definition of “contraband” and changed
the course of history by providing a legal excuse not to return runaways.
Butler’s solution to what is both a moral
dilemma and a practical problem is the climax
of Strand’s play, but before that, he sets up a
potent verbal battle between the Major General and Shepard Mallory, the only one of the
sanctuary seekers who appears. Much is
known about the blustery commander’s
deeply contradictory nature (read the program
notes), and the playwright’s premise is that
the similarities he and Mallory come to recognize in each other drive his actions. Both
are outspoken, curmudgeonly, contentious,
disliked even by their few friends, and determined to always have the last word, so Mallory, who is educated and can read though he
doesn’t want anyone to know (slaves we’re
forbidden to learn how to read at the time),
matches Butler point for point and even provides key military information.
With veteran actor Greg Vinkler as Butler
and Tosin Morohunfola as Mallory, their
scenes together really catch fire. Vinkler has a
fine voice and knack for sarcasm, while Morohunfola savvily blends sullen recalcitrance,
keen intelligence, and furious outbursts, making their exchanges compelling and often
quite funny.
Watching out for Butler is by-the-book West
Point grad, Lieutenant Kelly (Nate Burger),
who undergoes a change of heart and adds
some sly humor to the second act. At first he
intensely dislikes Mallory for giving him such
a hard time, but once he realizes what the man
has gone through and the danger he faces, he
becomes his advocate. He’s a combination
sounding board and everyman, duties Burger
handles with aplomb.
The main antagonist is Major Cary (Tim
Monsion), the Confederate officer who comes
to fetch Mallory and the others and return
them to their master, as well as to spy. Smug
and arrogant, he sees himself as a true Southern gentleman, but in one of the evening’s
best scenes, Vinkler’s cunning Butler gives
him his comeuppance both personally and politically, using the Confederacy’s own policies
to undermine its authority.
Stuart Carden directs at a fairly brisk pace,
except for an opening scene that’s incredibly
tedious. After Lieutenant Kelly reports that
Mallory “demands” to see him, Butler goes

Blackstone Bicycle Works transfers ownership

Jamel “J.T.” Triggs, 26, and Jermell Akins,
21, have both been repairing bicycles at
Blackstone Bicycle Works, 6100 S. Dorchester Ave., since their early teenage years.
Their years of apprenticeship paid major dividends, last week, when Triggs and Akins
were tapped to oversee the management of
the bike shop.
Blackstone Bicycle Works is a branch of Experimental Station, a community of educational and cultural programs, small businesses
and neighborhood initiatives. The employees
at Blackstone are youth from Chicago’s South
Side.
Triggs said that the majority of the over 200
youth involved in the bike program come
from the Hyde Park-Kenwood, Woodlawn
and Washington Park communities but that
some kids travel from as far as 120th St.
In addition to offering internships and employment opportunities to South Side
teenagers, Blackstone coordinates mentorship
programs and links students with college advisors.
Aaron Swanson and Chris Willard, Blackstone’s previous managers, have moved on to
positions at other bike retailers. Swanson
joined a shop in the West Loop and Willard
plans to open a place of his own in Kenwood.
“They feel they’re transferring the torch to a
younger generation,” Triggs said of the shift
in Blackstone’s management. “I’ve been here
since I was 14, and Aaron has been a big mentor for me since then.”
Triggs said that, since childhood, he’s always been somewhat of an engineer, and that
made him a perfect fit for working with bicycles.
“I used to take apart radios and remote control cars,” Triggs said. “When I came here, it
was just natural.”
Triggs is now Blackstone’s program coordinator and will focus on the curriculum of the
bike program as well as the shop’s day-to-day
operations.
Akins, whose official title is customer sales
associate, will handle bike purchases and
transactions.
Akins is assuming his new position with a
dose of humility.
“For me, it’s just business,” Akins said.
“The only thing that changed is my job description.”

take business classes in the future and jointly

open up a bike shop of their own.
“Englewood needs a Blackstone too,” Triggs
said. “All these neighborhoods need services
like this.”
While Akins and Triggs officially assumed
their new positions last week, they’ve been
slowly taking on responsibilities since the beginning of the year. And since then, Triggs
said that he and Akins have been exceeding
expectations.
“We’re $6,000 ahead of sales this early in
the year,” Triggs said. “That’s big.”

Louder Than a Bomb poetry festival hits DuSable

The individual finals for Chicago’s annual
Louder Than A Bomb (LTAB) poetry competition came to the DuSable Museum of
African American History, 740 E. 56th Pl., on
Thursday, March 17.
LTAB founder Kevin Coval has previously
called the youth poetry festival “the best political platform in Chicago.”
“You will see and hear the most acute critiques of hegemonic culture,” Coval said.
“You will also hear celebrations of bodies of
color.”

College Preparatory High School student eagerly awaited his turn to go on stage and, as
Coval might say, ‘unleash his political imagination.’

all. This is what I love to do.”
Lansana would later grace the stage with a
poem titled “When Spike Lee Didn’t Do The
Right Thing.”
For Sarah Ford, a student at the Academy of
Scholastic Achievement, Thursday was her
first time at a LTAB event.
“I’m just excited to hear the youth voices,”
Ford said.
Poet Mahnoor Jamal, a student at Maine
East High School, performed a poem titled “I
Am Scared.”
“My mother is imprisoned with fear,” Jamal
recited. “She is afraid of the way American

Park activist Bill Ayers, was tasked with rating each poet on a scale of 0-10.
“0 being the Republican Party,” Coval explained to the crowd, “10 being Beyonce’s
‘Formation.’”

contributions to Chicago’s political discourse
and said the event would always have a home
at the museum.
“I am in love with Louder Than a Bomb,”
Irmer said. “The truth that comes out of these
young people’s mouths is incomparable. And
if you’ve been watching the news, you know
Chicago’s youth are changing the city’s
politic.”
Coval went a step further, declaring, “Young
people in Chicago are changing the sonic
landscape of the entire planet.”

Jeffrey D. Kmiec’s scenic design, with its
stone accents and multipane window, nicely
suggests an office in a fort, and Sarah
Hughey’s lighting captures the shifting times
of day. Rachel Laritz’s costumes and Andre
Pluess’ sound round out the competent design
elements, but the real strengths of “Butler” are
a feel-good script (not easy, considering it’s a
comedy about slavery) and the fine acting.
