As 2016 rolled around, SHOT underwent a few exciting changes. First, longstanding
executive director Kim Lindsey took a job with AQHA, and Jill Dunkel stepped up to take
Kim’s place. The SHOT office moved from Lubbock to Archer City, Kelsey Watring joined
the show secretary team, we started utilizing a new computer system, and the entry forms
were modified. All of these changes have left our heads spinning just a little bit!
The new computer system has been quite the undertaking. In the past, all show entries
and calculations as well as horse/rider records were kept in a spreadsheet. The spreadsheet
program served SHOT well for many, many years. But with a consistent increase in membership and numbers at our shows, it has become evident over the last few years that a database system was necessary. Months of research led us to FunnWare, a software development
company that specializes in horse show programming.
The transition has not been easy. Initially every horse, its registration and ownership
information, as well as information from all of our members had to be entered into the
system. FunnWare tweaked their computer software along the way to fit SHOT, and it was a
challenging process that is not quite complete. But we are getting close!
With the new system, we hope to reduce mistakes and have an easier way to track information on horses and riders. Invoices/receipts are easily printed for members to keep for
their records. And the entry process is becoming streamlined. Regarding entries for the rest
of 2016, here’s a few notes:
• We do not need copies of Coggins. Just show
them to the secretary at the show.
• If your horse has been shown in 2016, we do
NOT need copies of their registration papers
• If you have shown in 2016, we do NOT need
copies of your SHOT or AQHA membership cards
unless they have been recently renewed.
We still have a few items on the to-do list for the
programmer, and she is diligently working on creating year end standings reports. We know tracking
points are important for our members, and in the
coming weeks we will be able to post those standings to our website.
Change is hard, and we appreciate everyone’s patience as we finish tweaking the new
software and reports to fit our association! THANK YOU!

Trainer’s Tip with Mozaun McKibben
Watch the warm up!
Courtesy of Kate Bradley
SHOT member and recently-crowned
American Quarter Horse Association
Versatility Ranch Horse Open World
Champion Mozaun McKibben says one
mistake riders make is to not properly
focus their horse before going into the
show pen. One way to get the horse ready
to show is to thoroughly warm up.
“When you are at a show and warming up in the warm-up pen, riders tend
to trot and lope a few circles and think their horse is warmed up because it is
calm. Riding with other horses will be one of the reasons your horse is calm,
because they have other horses around and are not nervous. But when you
walk into the alley or into the arena by yourself, the nerves come up in both
you and your horse. Right there, you are starting at a disadvantage because
your horse is not going to be warmed up to the point where it will listen to you.
Murphy Ranch &
Stylish Rey Gay
“Ride the horse, lope, trot and walk, and when you think the horse is
warmed up, work another 20 or 30 minutes. Horses will freshen up when
you are by yourself in the arena, so the horse needs to be tired when it goes
into the pen. Get there early to give yourself enough time to ride the fresh off
your horse and get it thinking about that day’s events. You can always win
any class kicking on a horse to push them faster, but you can’t win anything
pulling on your horse.”

SHOT member Kate Bradley will feature Trainer’s Tips in upcoming newsletters featuring
short pieces of advice for riders from various SHOT clinicians. Watch for this exciting new

It’s not too early to think about
the SHOT Futurity and Derby!
This is a chance for riders to showcase
their 3-, 4- & 5-year old horses in the
four SHOT classes. There are multiple
divisions:
• Open/Non Pro (compete together
for prizes/money, plus there is Non
Pro incentive money paid out to
Non Pros)
• Limited Non Pro
• Collegiate riders are awarded
scholarships as the highest placing
collegiate in each division.
Horses must be nominated. Nominations are due October 1. Spread the
word! This is an excellent way to showcase young, versatile horses!

Two more Novice Clinics in the books!
The Novice clinic concept is continuing to grow and succeed! In March, SHOT hosted
a Novice Clinic in Stephenville with Al and Bobbi Walton. The event was organized
by Michelle Reding, and lunch was provided by Jim Lane Equine Insurance Services.
Particpants worked on all of the SHOT classes, working a flag, learning about rope safety and
also practiced the drag.
In May, another Novice clinic was held at Still Creek Ranch in Bryan. This clinic featured
Matlock Rice, Chris Ward, David Neason and the Texas A&M Stock Horse Team. This event
was organized by Tina McCleary. Lunch at the
Bryan clinic was also provided by Jim Lane
Equine Insurance.
Thanks to both Michelle and Tina
for their help with our Novice program!
SHOT Lone Star Challenge
What is that? Well it is an opportunity for us to give back to our armed forces for their service
on our behalf.
Bandera Drilling
Belcher Family
Living Trust
The Semper Fi Fund, which is the parent organization to the Jinx McCain Horsemanship Program
(JMHP), provides support and assistance to post9/11 wounded, critically ill and injured service
members from all branches of the U.S. Armed
Forces. The JMHP was dedicated in memory of Col.
Jinx McCain, a member of the United States Marine
Corps. Col. McCain hosted trail rides for amputees
from Vietnam while stationed at Camp Pendleton, California, in the 1960’s. Today, the program
hosts approximately six clinics each year, giving service members the opportunity to connect with
an equine partner while learning horsemanship and working cattle. The JMHP depends on its
host for venue, horses, and tack. Our association is so amazing that it seems a natural thing for us
to host an event in 2017. The Board agreed, approved the concept, and preliminary planning has
started.
While the date/location is yet to be determined, the initial concept is that the clinic component of the “SHOT Lone Star Challenge” will take place during the first two days of a three-day
event. Each clinic session could be led by a different instructor(s) depending on their willingness
and availability. The event may will culminate with an actual ‘challenge’ based on a team format
instead of individual head-to-head competition. The challenge will test the skills the participants
learn during the clinic days and promote comraderie.
More planning is definitely required. Jinx McCain Horsemanship Program clinics are completely free for the servicemen and women who attend. While the program is funded by donations from across the county, The Semper Fi Fund is grateful for the generosity of its host which
generally supplies horses, tack, cattle, trail obstacles, and food/drink.
For more information on the program, there is an article about a recent event in the May 2016
issue of America’s Horse. If you can help with our event, please contact Cathy Clements
(balanceranch@aol.com).
