This year’s clinic and show is Friday, September 6 and Saturday, September 7. We are super excited about this year’s clinicians! Where else can you learn from 3 World Champions, the champion of Project Cowboy and the Mustang Makeover winner for just $100?? Mike Major, multiple AQHA VRH World Champion and Select Working Cow Horse World Champion, is this year’s Reining clinician. Mike, Holly and their family recently moved to Bowie, Texas, from Colorado. We are excited for Mike and Holly to get to know our SHOT family! Fresh off his latest AQHA World Championship in Ranch Pleasure, Mozaun McKibben will bring his style of pleasure to our clinic. Mozaun always keeps things exciting and fun. APHA World Champion and master clinician Earnest Wilson will be on hand to help riders navigate our trail obstacles. Earnest is passionate about teaching kids and adults alike. Multiple World Champion, Cowboy, Clinician, and Author Mike Major is one of four excellent clinicians teaching at the Vernon SHOT show And new to our clinic lineup is Mustang Makeover Winner Teryn Muench. Teryn is a great communicator and is looking forward to helping everyone work a cow during the clinic. Like last year, we will host an AQHA Ranch Pleasure class on Friday evening, starting around 6 pm. Half the entry fee will be jackpotted in each division, so jump in this fun class for an opportunity to win some money. The AQHA Versatility Class will also begin Friday evening with Ranch Cutting. The VRH will be jackpotted as well. Other VRH classes will be conducted simultaneously with SHOT classes on Saturday. Your support of our show helps 4-Hers attend events all across the state. With funds raised from this show, we assist 4-Hers with entry and travel expenses when they compete in horse judging, educational presentations, public speaking, horse shows and clinics. Many kids are able to enjoy horse activities because of your support. If there’s anything we can do to make your weekend more enjoyable, please ask one of our 4-H members or parent volunteers. See you in Vernon! P AGE 2 T HE S TOCK H ORSE R OUND U P Western Horseman & Stock Horse of Texas Western Horseman’s support of the Stock Horse of Texas became official in 2011 by sponsoring the association’s first world championship show. However, the magazine has been a longtime supporter through editorial coverage and staff involvement. In the March 1999 issue, Western Horseman covered an early SHOT show in Seagoville, Texas, held on the Southland Land and Cattle Company. Since that first article, the magazine’s coverage has not only been event specific, but also has focused on outstanding members of SHOT, its clinicians and those in elected positions. Training articles, personality profiles, and tack and equipment articles have featured sources such as Ben Baldus, Shawn Hays, Jimbo Humphries, the Jacobs family, Kim Lindsey, Mozaun McKibben, Laurie Shelton, Baru Spiller, Ernest Wilson and Kris Wilson. Many of the articles support both SHOT and Western Horseman’s common goal of providing educational means for horsemen and -women to improve their stockmanship and support the Western stock horse. Many Western Horseman staff are also SHOT members, showing their own horses at SHOT-sanctioned events around the state. Through a mutually beneficial partnership, Western Horseman and SHOT provide a means for horse owners to compete on a versatile horse and keep alive the traditions of the West. Limited Non Pro Futurity and Derby Entries Get your entries in now for the new Limited Non Pro Futurity and Derby Divisions. The Limited Non Pro Division is designed for riders who wish to exhibit their horses in a limited cow work pattern (boxing and driving). The division will run concurrently with the Futurity and Derby classes, except the cow work will follow the Limited Non Pro/Junior Horse pattern (see SHOT Rule Book for more information). This will be a separate division with a separate payout and awards from the regular Futurity and Derby. The division is open to any Non Pro rider, and the rider may also enter the regular Futurity or Derby—however, a horse may only be entered in the regular Futurity/Derby or the LNP Futurity/Derby—not both. Visit the SHOT website for rules and nomination forms. T HE S TOCK H ORSE R OUND U P P AGE 3 SRCHA joins SHOT for big world show weekend Mark your calendars! The Stock Horse of Texas Association (SHOT) was created to promote and support the concept of the versatile stock horse. The strength in this concept lies in the variety of skills developed by both horse and rider in four different disciplines: Reining, Pleasure, Trail, and Working Cow Horse. The true all-around stock horse can handle a variety of situations with ease and athleticism, using natural movement and an attitude that reflects the ranch-type influence of the everyday stock horse. The SHOT program is designed for riders of all experiences to learn and compete in an environment that is friendly, affordable and designed to fit all levels of riding. Celebrating 15 years of promoting the versatile stock horse, the SHOT mission continues: “Helping People Ride a Better Horse”.
