Brochure - The Aspinall Foundation
Discover Adventure On Your Doorstep Welcome Port Lympne Wild Animal Park has grown in leaps and bounds since it was established in the 1970’s by John Aspinall. Port Lympne has become world renowned for its conservation efforts with The Aspinall Foundation and more recently for its multi-award winning accommodation. Building on these successes, I am delighted to announce the development of Port Lympne Reserve. The reserve encapsulates everything we do, from day visits, breeding endangered species with a view to returning them to protected areas of the wild, to providing quality accommodation and a unique wedding venue. With exciting safari and animal experiences, including the opportunity to enjoy unrivalled access to some of the world’s most rare and endangered species, I believe that Port Lympne Reserve truly has something for everyone. In 1973 he bought Port Lympne Wild Animal Park to help house the growing groups of animals. Today the two wild animal parks are home to over 1000 animals and over 100 different species. The Aspinall Foundation is the charity which works with the wild animal parks in Kent and together we are devoted to saving rare and endangered animals. The Aspinall Foundation is a world leader in the breeding and reintroduction of threatened species to wild protected areas, with projects in Congo, Gabon, Madagascar and Java, as well as providing support to animal protection education schemes across the world. The Aspinall Foundation protects endangered species such as gorillas, rhinos, lemurs, gibbons, langurs, Przewalski horses and European bison in the wild. Damian Aspinall, Chairman of The Aspinall Foundation “From the beginning, John Aspinall realised that the threat from humanity was so great that radical and sometimes controversial methods were needed to protect some of the world’s most endangered species. Apart from the ground breaking success that the charity has had breeding rare and endangered animals at home, it has from its very beginnings invested enormously in in-situ conservation; probably more than any other European collection relative to its size and assets. This amount is now four times what it was in the year 2000 when my father died and I will continue to increase this proportion, as I believe more and more that we must leverage our work at the parks to protect species in the wild.” “It’s not alarmist to talk of possible extinction. But if we act now, act fast, there is a real chance we can save them.” Visit our website at www.apinallfoundation.org for more information about our conservation efforts. 4 •The Aspinall Foundation’s greatest success to date is our gorilla reintroduction programme with 70 gorillas being successfully returned back to their natural habitat. Other projects have included being part of a team who translocated six European bison to the wild in Romania. •The Aspinall Foundation Java Primate Rescue Centre was set up to rescue, rehabilitate and return back to the wild Javan primates. To date 15 Javan primates have left the parks in Kent for Java, and over 45 primates have been returned back into the wild. •The greater bamboo lemur is one of the rarest primates in the world - its survival depends on the charitable support of local people in Madagascar, who are committed to protecting the last remaining populations. 5 6 “...it was as close to the real thing without the 10 hour flight” - Sally Ann Froud, September, 2015 Set over 600 acres, Port Lympne Reserve is home to the UK’s most authentic safari experience, The African Experience – 100 acres alive with African animals. The popular safari experience now incorporates an Asian theme, where water buffalo roam with other Asian animals, whilst new arrivals are expected across the park as successful breeding programmes continue. Visitors to Port Lympne throughout the year can look forward to a super, natural and epic day out as they explore wooded pathways to discover where the wild things are and see the UK’s largest herd of black rhino, big cats, small cats, primates, western lowland gorillas and more! Recent additions have seen the arrival of the county’s first ever pair of spectacled bears and an epic dinosaur exhibit, featuring over 100 anatomically correct and life sized models, including the T Rex, diplodocus and pterodactyl. Port Lympne also offers a variety of short break accommodations from glamping experiences to luxury VIP stays. From sunrise to sunset, the Kentish savannah at Port Lympne Reserve is the perfect setting for your short break with a wild twist! 7 DINOSAUR FOREST Visitors are invited to step into a prehistoric world, as one of the largest collections of life size dinosaurs in Europe has hatched at Port Lympne Reserve! Dinosaur Forest features over 100 life size models, each authentic and anatomically correct, including favourites such as T Rex, diplodocus and pterodactyl. The new attraction offers visitors the chance to journey back in time, whilst a dedicated team of rangers are on hand to tell the story of the animal kingdom as it was millions of years ago. Not only can visitors and students learn more about these impressive creatures, they can also become amateur palaeontologists themselves, as they dig for fossils. Use your phone to download our app and watch as dinosaurs come to life at our augmented reality points! Book an educational visit for your school or group, and meet one of our expert Dinosaur Rangers, as they take you on a journey back in time through Dinosaur Forest. You can choose a guided tour packed with fascinating dinosaur facts, or enjoy an informative talk on a variety of prehistoric related topics!
