Summer 2016 - Cornerstone Family Violence Prevention Centre
A PLACE WHERE HOPE GROWS Newsletter | Summer 2016 From The Desk of Nancy Johnston, ED Excerpt from AGM address This past year has been a time of significant transition at Cornerstone. Linda Janzen our Executive Director retired. I left my position as Manager of Residential Services to assume the Executive Director role. I believe that we have successfully navigated this transition and this is due to the exceptional level of commitment and skill that is evident at all levels of the organization. At Cornerstone, we are committed to being a centre of excellence in the field of family violence prevention. Building capacity within our organization is a high priority. We invest in continuous staff development and training. Service provision is rooted in researched best practices. Fostering positive relationships with our funders, our donors, our community partners and the individuals and families that we serve are key to our success. We invite and welcome feedback from our clients. Comments that we receive are overwhelmingly positive. The day to day work is challenging and demand for our services remains high. This past year our average shelter occupancy rate was 134%, we provided youth violence prevention programming to 1179 students in Northumberland County and we have a wait list for classrooms requesting the program. Staff travelled a total of 9191 km’s to reach individuals and families in our rural communities. Every job is important in accomplishing the mission of Cornerstone. Our staff is commended for their perseverance, skill and genuine care and compassion that they offer to the women and children we serve. When a woman finds safety at our shelter after years of violence or a woman living in a rural area has access to a counselor, or a child learns to understand what a healthy relationship is, it’s because of our supporters, donors, funders and service partners. On behalf of Cornerstone, thank you. Cornerstone is a place where hope grows. We welcome everyone to continue helping us lay strong roots for hope to grow for women and children impacted by family violence in Northumberland County. Executive Director Art Therapy Nicole Kerouac, an Art Therapy Placement Student, has been donating her time with our women and children since early March. She has been an exceptional addition to our residential and community services. These art sessions provide a creative outlet for participants that nicely complements our other services and supports. 21 Children Served in Community Counselling April to June 20 Clients in Family Court Support Program April to June 42 Women Served in Transitional Housing & Support April to June 1666 Children and Youth served in Youth Violence Prevention Program 2015/2016 school year If you know someone living with abuse, please contact our 24 Hour Support Line 905-372-0746 or 1-800-263-3757 Toll Free Cornerstone and the YMCA Team Up Again! This year, Cornerstone and the YMCA Northumberland have renewed our partnership to offer each of our children staying with us the chance to attend The Y’s Camp Tiki. Each child will have one full week at the Day Camp which is a once in a lifetime opportunity for most of these children. The YMCA Northumberland along with Cornerstone’s Adeline Bulger Children’s Fund are making it possible for these children to go at no cost to them. They will participate in the many fun activities the camp has to offer and will have the chance for some fun in the sun! Thank you to the many generous donors and to the YMCA that have made this possible! It will be a summer they will never forget! Summer Fun! This summer, not only will our children be able to attend Camp Tiki but we have planned a bunch of fun activities throughout the season! Thank you to Joseph Bulger, Dan Bulger and Rev. Gary O’Dwyer. Together they have donated thousands to the Adeline Bulger Children’s fund and we are very grateful for your support! The fund was set up in honor of Bryan Rose an avid athlete and community supporter who believed in creating opportunities for children to enjoy sport and play. Since his passing, his grandson Josh along with numerous family members, have raised over $25,000 for local organizations encouraging sports for kids. The Foundation has supported Cornerstone’s children’s programming over the years and here we will find out why. Tell us a bit about the Bryan Rose Sports Fund. Josh: It was started 4 years ago now. It was always a dream of my Papa’s to help kids who couldn’t afford to participate in playing sports. Passing at younger age than he ever expected, it was one of those things where we asked “What can we do to carry on his legacy?” It all came pretty naturally. What is it about helping kids that speaks to you? Angela: Like Joshua said, it was something my dad was really involved in. My dad was really involved in our sports and the community as a coach. He coached the Cobourg Cougars, women’s fastball and minor hockey - it’s where his passion lied. Things were a challenge for him growing up, he had a number of barriers to overcome. I know he would say that if it had not been for the game of hockey, his life would have gone in a completely different direction. He was drafted at a young age to the Oshawa Generals, and that opportunity helped him overcome some of those barriers. As a coach, he was often in the background making sure that a financial barrier was not the reason for someone not participating in a sport. Join us on Facebook! www.cornerstonenorthumberland.ca The Rose Family at the Annual Charity Golf Tournament Why did you decide to support the children here at Cornerstone? Angela: When we were starting to talk about the fund, our first priority was for the funds to remain local. We then started thinking about the barriers, beyond finances, that may prevent children from participating in sports and recreation. Cornerstone was the first call we made and this is the partnership that has evolved over the past four years. It was a local agency that we decided immediately to contribute to, and although we aren’t dealing with really large amounts of money, the funds appear to be truly making a difference. What has been the best part about helping kids in the community? Josh: Well, it really isn’t about us. But it’s when there’s a kid that got the chance to do something, like playing on a sports team or attending a recreational camp, that others take for granted. Even if we are helping out just one of those kids, it makes it worth it. Angela: We also know that a coach, a really good coach, has the potential of changing someone’s life. 40 Swayne St., Cobourg, ON, K9A 1K5 Phone: (905) 372-1545 Fax: (905) 373-4800
