COVER: Andres Soffia, at Los Trapenses, Santiago, Chile. Photo by Binder. binderfoto.cl THE FINE PRINT. Welcome to a small, but significant section within Concrete Wave. A number of people overlook this section, but if you’ve found it, that means you are paying close attention. Attention is something that is at the heart of what CW stands for. There are literally dozens of companies working within the skate industry who aren’t getting the recognition they deserve. They are creating some truly incredible products and yet they get minimal or no exposure. We feel that it’s vital that these companies get some recognition for their outstanding efforts. I am sure you’d agree that the Buyer’s Guide is an excellent way to spread the word. Likewise, there are thousands of skaters out there who rip, but for whatever reason, aren’t getting any recognition. Sometimes geography plays a roll. After all, the center of skateboarding is California and if you live thousands of miles away, it can be difficult to get attention. In this issue you will read about four skaters who we feel are part of the “Next Wave.” There’s no doubt we could publish an entire magazine just dedicated to these up and coming rippers. The Internet has certainly provided both skaters and companies with a way to increase their presence. However, many still value the medium of print. I believe you have to balance the strength of each medium to really help spread the word. For example, we’ve printed about 15,000 copies of this guide and we are giving them all away for free. If just three other people get a chance to view this guide, that will mean over 45,000 readers. While this is a significant number, it’s not big enough for us. So, we have come up with a strategy to ensure that tens of thousands of people will get a chance to view this guide. In late March, this guide will be available as a free downloadable PDF through silverfishlongboarding.com. My gut tells me that people from all over the world will download this guide and share it with their friends. Wouldn’t it be amazing if 450,000 people got a chance to see this guide? What about 4.5 million? Who knows how fast this could spread? The montage of photos you see across from this Fine Print is a bit of a departure for us. Normally, we showcase one large photo. But for this guide, I decided to try something a little different. My idea was to showcase not only all types of skateboarding, but also all types of skaters. You’ll note that the top left and bottom right photos are similar. The difference is the age of the riders. There are also other connections within this group of photos, but I’ll let you try and figure out how things are connected. For those readers who are interested, each issue of Concrete Wave has a number of connected items – sort of a story within a story. There are lots of things we do to add another dimension to the publication but it’s up to you to figure it all out. While this guide is free, the fact is that once you get a chance to read it, you start to realize that it may well cost you…a lot! That’s part of the fun, as far as I’m concerned. We know that we’ve accomplished something significant when see lots of people transferring the money they were going to spend on skate clothing and shoes to decks, wheels and trucks. While many skaters are content to ride just one type of board, with one type of shape (Popsicle), we know there is a growing contingent that is ardent followers of the quiver theory. Yes, I know it’s a slippery slope. You start with a street board (or you dig out one of your boards from the past) and then one day, you spot a longboard. So you start with one longboard, and soon discover what else is out there. As you learn more, your lust for more skate stuff grows. Before you know it, you’ve picked up a slalom board, pool board and a ton of other equipment. You start to realize the smell of a freshly gripped board is comparable to that new car smell. Your parents/significant other/kids are completely amazed by your insatiable appetite for more skate stuff. “Don’t worry,” you tell them “this is will be the last board I buy for a while.” Yeah, sure. Face it. You’ve become a skate addict and rehab is not in the cards. As it turns out, my addiction to skateboarding has now surpassed three full decades. The reality for me is that my passion for skateboarding manifests itself through this magazine. After almost failing shop in elementary school, I soon realized that building stuff is not my forte. What seems to be working is the magazine and I am grateful to all the advertisers and readers. While I am proud that CW has helped spread the word on all types of skateboarding, I am even more proud to pass down my love of skateboarding to my children. So, as we head into what appears to be an explosive year for niche skateboarding, I wish you all the very best. Read the guide, get stoked, treat yourself to some skate stuff and get out there and skate! Printed in Canada ISSN 1708-3338 2 5 3 4 6 Canada Post Publication. Agreement number 40671108 1. While some of these companies might be unfamiliar to you, we can assure you they are making truly remarkable products — for ALL types of skateboarding: street, vert, transition, downhill, slalom and freestyle. As we were putting this 2006 guide together, it began to dawn on us that the page count was mushrooming. We started out at 72 pages and this has somehow evolved into 96! Speaking of evolving, the artwork you see above documents the evolution of skateboarding. The piece was created by artist Malcolm Wilson. He spent over 300 hours building each model skateboard — most of the boards are less than 3” in size. In January, Malcolm showcased the piece at the Action Sports Retailer Show in San Diego. Once I saw it, I knew it would be a perfect giveaway. If you’d like a chance to win this amazing piece of art, simply become a subscriber to Con- F 18 CONCRETE WAVE BUYER’S GUIDE 2006 REVOLUTION crete Wave by October 31, 2006. One lucky subscriber will win this $3,500.00 masterpiece on November 1st, 2006. As some of you may know, Concrete Wave is coming up on its 5th anniversary in June. We’re proud to showcase all types of skateboarding and skaters and hope this buyer’s guide gives you a taste of what’s out there. What started as a quiet revolution is suddenly gathering quite a lot of momentum around the world. If the product in here interests you, be sure to ask your local skate shop if they carry it or can order it for you. If that route doesn’t work, you might want to shop on-line or contact the company directly. On a final note, I’d like to thank my hardworking designer Markintosh who put in a tremendous effort in designing this guide.
