In its hinterland is the green stretch of what is known as the mountainous Croatia that separates the coast from the interior. Most of it is oriented towards Kvarner - which is what gives it its special qualities. To visit Kvarner is a treat but to spend time in the region is a veritable delight - be it on its coast, its islands or its hinterland. Vrbnik Valbiska Krk Cres Baška Merag Suffice it to say that the Kvarner islands of Krk, Cres and Lošinj alone boast over 1300 types of plants - which is more than can be found in some of the European countries. The supply of tourist facilities, opportunities and programmes is just as wide ranging and varied. To put it into a nut shell - on small scale, Kvarner encompasses the immense biological diversity that Croatia brings to Europe. Stara Baška Lubenice CRES The world of fauna includes many rare and protected species: griffon vulture, eagles, falcon, hawk, grouse, owls, numerous specie of water fowl; brown bear, wolf, lynx, jackal, wild cat, badger, fox, deer, chamois, mouflon, pine and stone marten can be found in the dense forests of Gorski kotar, alonge the mainland shore and on the islands. Waiting for you in the deep blue are dolphins - the carming inhabitants of the waters around the Lošinj archipelago. And to cap it all, it takes a mere 30 minutes drive from walking out of the sea and delving into the deep green oasis of the Gorski kotar forests, the Risnjak National Park, and some twenty nature parks, park-forests, reserves scattered across the area. Ever since 1889 when Opatija was declared the climate health resort, it has offered relaxation in unique walks along the 12 km coast promenade the Lungomare, in its neatly kept parks, on the slopes of Učka mountain and in high guality wellness centres. Carnivals and festivals, concerts and shows, half-day and daily trips to the islands and the surroundings of the town, make the stay more diversified and more interesting, attracting visitors at any time of year. Mrkopalj Kraljevica Lungomare is a 12 kilometres long coastal promenade which joins up the main points along the Opatija Riviera: Volosko, Opatija, Ičići, Ika, Lovran and Mošćenička Draga. This walk along the sea front offers an escape from the stresses of everyday life. In fact, it can be said that a stroll up and down the Lungomare promenade is an excellent, and above all a delightful form of recreation and a wellness treatment accessible to all, day in and day out, the year round. The air one breathes brings both the taste of salt from the sea and the freshness of the mountains, the fragrances of rosemary, laurel, lavender and the whole wealth of the Mediterranean vegetation, and it does us a world of good. After all, that is precisely one of the main reasons why the Opatija Riviera has always been known as an oasis of health and recuperation in which the wellness lifestyle was alive and kicking long before that word came into use. Once the town of seamen, captains and sailing ships, the Bakar of today is a calm refuge for a pleasant stroll through its charming streets, a place to take a relaxing brake in a journey, or a venue to be visited for any one of its interesting events. tourist offer Nestling in one of the best protected Adriatic bays (the shape of a jug) surrounded by a chain of high mountains, Bakar has always been one of the safest ports on the Adriatic coasts. History tells us that some 200 years ago, in the golden age of the sailing ship, in its heyday, this now small, old coastal town was the actually the largest Croatian town. Still alive are the legends of the riches of ten ship owners and captains hidden behind the modest walls of the Bakar houses. The medieval heart of the town with the church and the old Frankopan at the top of a hill boasts a typical littoral layout which affords every house with the view of the sea. Two houses stand out with their specific shape. One - the Turkish house - is of oriental design and a completely mysterious history and origin, and the other – the Roman house – believed to have been built as a convent, is, besides the fortification, the most prominent structure of the Upper Town of Bakar. The town also boasts the oldest trade school in Croatia – the 160 years old nautical college which bears witness to the seagoing tradition of the place. And it is owing to that tradition that every May Bakar plays host to an international regatta of nautical schools. info: Tourist board of the town of Bakar www.tz-bakar.hr ia Way to Croat 28 www.generalturist.com accommodation in hotels, apartments and holiday houses, lighthouses, tours, sailboats, transfers... events One of the most interesting events is Margareta’s Fair which takes place on the weekend closest to July 13th. Every year in the time of carnival a Paris – Bakar rally (as opposed to the Paris – Dakar one) is staged, and the competitors are the motorized masks. special offer The Bakar baškot - the story links it to the life of mariners which is said to be like “bread of seven crusts”. Baškot is a twice baked ring of dough which was a staple diet in a ship galley where it was hanging on ropes. They say it is particularly nice when dunked in wine. Today baškot is one of the symbols of the town. The slopes that plunge almost vertically towards the bay is criss-crossed with drystone walls (among the most imposing ones in Croatia) which support terraces with vineyards - and now enjoy the status of a protected landscape and a monument of culture. The total amount of stone built into them amounts to 1/5 of the material used to build the Great Pyramid of Cheops in Egypt. Throughout history the women of the area have used the indigenous variety of grapes cultivated on those slopes to produce the sparkling wine known as Bakarska vodica. Its production has been renewed ten years ago, and at the same time the restoration of the drystone walls also began. Anchored in the Bay of Bakar is the sailing ship Bente Dorte, an 18 m long old-timer from 1929 with two masts and a weight of 40 tons. It is operated only manually, according to the old rules of maritime trade, it has 8 beds and offers the pleasures of traditional sailing. info: www.bentedorte.com preserved traditions Generalturist Ltd., I.
