Shopping in Hamburg
To your Assistance
Cash
Many shops are unwilling to accept € 500 notes.
Tip: Ask your hotel to change larger notes for you before
you set off for the shops.
Bargaining
Bargaining is not common practice in Germany, and most
shops have very little scope for granting discounts.
Tip: Try bargaining by all means, but please don‘t be
disappointed if it doesn‘t get you anywhere. It‘s nothing
personal.
Tax Free
Participating stores display the Global Refund TAX FREE
SHOPPING SIGN. Ask for your Tax Refund Cheque. When
you leave the country, present your purchases, receipts
and passport at customs and have your cheques stamped.
You can then redeem the cheques at the Cash Refund
Office (Hamburg Airport) or send them to Global Refund
to receive a bank cheque or have the sum credited to your
credit card.
Transport
Have in-store staff call you a taxi to take you back to your
hotel.
Tip: All German taxis use their meters, so there is no need
to negotiate the price of the trip.
Gifts
Some shops are happy to gift-wrap your purchases.
Tip: Ask at the cash desk whether a gift-wrap service is
available.

Even jetsetters used to browsing the shops of New York‘s Fifth
Avenue or London‘s Oxford Street are often amazed at what
Hamburg has to offer in terms of shopping. Whether designer
couch, futuristic kitchen, garden furniture, tableware or gift
items, anyone looking for lifestyle inspiration is bound to come
up trumps in Hamburg.
Lots of elegant shopping malls magically attract all those
who want to take back home with them more than just nice
memories. The Europa Passage, which with its 123 shops
is Germany‘s biggest inner-city shopping street, takes you
from the Jungfernstieg through to Mönckebergstrasse,
affectionately known by the locals as »Mö«. Here you will
find Sport Karstadt, Europe‘s largest sports store, which
even boasts its own ice skating rink on the roof. Lovers of
music and technology should cross to the other side of the
»Mö« and take a look around Saturn, the world‘s biggest
electronics store, where you can buy every kind of household appliance, computers, computer games, music and
video equipment.

Experience Hamburg’s Lifestyle
In the malls around the Große Bleichen, lifestyle fans will
find fine china and interior design articles, not to mention
Schacht & Westerich, a stationary store offering high-class
writing materials. A little further on, in the traditional
Colonnades, there are numerous cafés and shops selling
gifts and exclusive small items.
The refined Neuer Wall offers a rather more upmarket
option, with around 100 stores featuring luxury lifestyle
products such as Vertu, B & O and Montblanc. If design is
really your thing, you should perhaps take the extra time
to walk to the new Elbstrasse, where you will find Stilwerk
– a temple for top-class interior design, furniture and home
accessories.
Hamburg’s most maritime shopping experience, right in the heart
of the city, with more than 120 shops on five decks, not to mention
over 20 restaurants and cafés offering a wide variety of culinary
treats. Take the bus, U-Bahn or S-Bahn to the Jungfernstieg stop.
Open till 8 pm, Monday to Saturday.

Fashion and Style
Hamburg – The Capital of Fashion
Whether you are a designer junkie, a trendsetter or a bargain
hunter, you will find everything you are looking for in Hamburg!
The city‘s 11 shopping malls, including the famous Hanseviertel with its covered arcades, and its countless shopping
streets are home to an overwhelming diversity of fashion,
jewellery and shoe shops. The Neue Wall is Hamburg‘s
most exclusive address: all the big labels – like Joop,
Armani, Versace, Boss, Prada and Jil Sander – have flagship
stores here. If you are looking for exquisite jewellery and
watches, you will find Bulgari, Tiffany and Cartier here, to
name but a few, while exclusive accessories are on offer
at Hermès, Offermann and Louis Vuitton. On the Jungfernstieg, the famous boulevard in the heart of the city, highclass shops present a wide variety of fashion, shoes and
jewellery - and all in a truly unique setting, directly by the
water. If you want to find everything under one roof, your
best bet is to go straight to Hamburg‘s traditional Alsterhaus department store on the Jungfernstieg – it‘s famous
for its huge range of all kinds of connoisseur products.
When hunting down Germany‘s very latest non-mainstream fashion trends, the Schanzenviertel and Karoviertel
districts are well worth a visit – this is where you will find
young designers at work whose creativity seems to know
no bounds.

Kids World
Hamburg Treats for the Kids
–
A day of shopping in Hamburg is a great experience for the
whole family, and children in particular will find all their hearts
desire. Your kids will stare in amazement at the fantastic shops
with their endless array of products, offering everything from
colourful and elegant children‘s fashion to a huge range of toys
and exclusive German-made cuddly toys.
Discover European children‘s fashion from Petit Bateau
and Jacadi, or experience the Kinderparadies (children‘s
paradise), which has everything a child could possibly wish
for. Your little ones can gaze in wonder at the latest toys
in the Lego Store or the toy departments of Karstadt and
Galeria Kaufhof. Not far away, in the Levantehaus Passage,
the Steiff store stocks the famous German soft toys with
the button in their ear. Your children will love a trip to BuildA-Bear in the Europa Passage, where they can actually
build their own bear. It‘s so much fun! Afterwards, you may
find that sweet gummi bears are the order of the day at
the Bären-Treff in Mönckebergstrasse – you may even find
yourself tempted by them, too.
Hamburg‘s Speicherstadt at the Elbhafen promises the
whole family an unforgettable experience. In this historic
warehouse complex, the only one of its kind in the world,
you will find some great museums, as well as the Miniature
Wunderland, home to the world‘s biggest model railway.
Immerse yourself in this fascinating model world, which
will give both young and old plenty to talk about.

Beauty and Wellness
Relaxing in Hamburg
When you‘re on holiday, it‘s nice to do things that make you feel
great. No problem – Germany, and especially Hamburg, have a
tradition of taking a healthy lifestyle and healthy products very
seriously!
For example, the lower ground floor of the Budnikowski
Markt in the Europa Passage, right in the heart of the
city, stocks a huge range of organic products and natural
cosmetics. Or how about visiting Tee Gschwendner on the
Jungfernstieg for a comprehensive selection of healthy and
organic tea varieties? Or perhaps you might like to buy a
pair of the famous German Birkenstock shoes, which are
particularly good for your feet, in »der gesunde Schuh«,
a specialist shoe shop in the Chilehaus. Pharmacies in
Germany also have a full range of health-giving and cosmetic products, and are well worth a visit! Fans of the French
cosmetics brand Vichy, for instance, will find a large and
very attractively priced choice at the Apotheke am Rothenbaum pharmacy in Rothenbaumchaussee.
If you really want to pamper yourself during your day of
shopping, how about dropping in at the Nivea Haus on
Jungfernstieg for a massage or beauty treatment? This is
your chance to experience at first hand the traditional Nivea
brand, which was invented in Hamburg and is still produced
in Hamburg and sold all over the world. If you want to go
a step further, you could try one of the elegant spas in the
city‘s five-star hotels, e.g. the Kempinski Hotel Atlantik or
the Fairmont Hotel Vier Jahreszeiten.
The Hotel Atlantic Kempinski Hamburg – located on the shores of Lake Alster, in the centre of town – is a magnifcent example of the city’s Hanseatic
culture and lifestyle.
Since opening in 1909, discerning travellers have appreciated our great
Hanseatic tradition. Our grand interiors have been a popular meeting place
for cosmopolitan guests ever since. Ultimate comfort, perfect service and
uncompromising culinary excellence – we live up to our name.
With spectacular new features including the BMW Suite, the Club Atlantic,
the Tsao Yang restaurant and a series of new junior suites, we combine innovation with tradition. Our latest highlight is the PrivateMax – the first private
cinema in a German hotel with seating for eight persons.
