Message from the VOS Executive:
Dear Orchid Lovers
Here were are in the fit of early spring and my orchids are giving me the thumbs up by producing new green shoots and
flower spikes. My catasetums are always the first to let me know it’s time to start watering them again after a dry winter rest. By now the sun is once again getting stronger so for those growing in greenhouses and windowsill alike your
shade cloths should now be in place to prevent scorching those tender orchid leaves. February was a busy month and
I am glad to report that the VOS won at least 20 awards and several AOS nominations at the Victoria Society Show.
Congratulations to all and many thanks to those volunteers who set up the show/took it down and transported it back
and forth to the Island. As we have said many times on the Executive, we need many volunteers to help make these
shows work and, as an Orchid Community, we all need to pitch in and help. If we do not attend our sister Orchid Societies’ shows they will not attend ours. To that end we are looking for plants and volunteers for our upcoming show this
month (March 25, 26, 27). There will be sign-up sheets at the next meeting (or e-mail jennifer.pell@gmail.com) and
any time you could volunteer for our VOS Show and Sale would be appreciated. And of course we will also need your
beautiful orchid plants! And don’t forget to buy your Preview Party tickets. We also rely on our volunteers to put up
posters and distribute our $1-off coupons for the show and generally bring their friends and acquaintances to the
show.
Last month’s Culture Class was a big success and we encourage all members to come out and take part in
this monthly event. This month’s topic will feature Margaret Pratt taking us through an AOS Webinar on growing in
semi –hydroponic media. We also ask you to bring plants you are having trouble with to these meetings and the braintrust of members present might be
able to help you figure out the problem.
Stanhopea costaricensis
This month’s speaker is our own Dr.
Photographed by Patrick Milligen. This is one of the plants in his collection
Adnan Uzunovic and he will be speaking on his experience as well as the
ins and outs of Wardian Cases. This
promises to be an informative and
interesting session, not to be missed.
Looking forward to seeing you all at
the VOS Preview Party and the Show
Happy growing

Show Volunteers still needed! Volunteer opportunities are:
Friday, March 25th
1:30 to 5pm - Ribbon Judges - you do not need to be an expert to participate. This is a great learning experience for new and old members alike – learn about the different classes of orchids and be part of your judging team’s decision in selecting the ‘best in class’ and also
voting for the show champion – it is a lot of fun and a great way to get to know other members of the Society.
5:30pm - Plant Preview Party set up – help set up the tables and get the food ready.
7pm onwards - Plant Preview Party Serving and Clean-up; after this you get a first look and first choice of plants to purchase from the
many vendors in attendance.
Saturday, March 26th
8:45am to Noon - Hospitality/Kitchen; Security, Jack/Jill-of-all-trades
Noon to 3pm - Security, Jack/Jill-of-all-trades
3 to 5pm - Admissions; Plant Hotel, Security, Jack/Jill-of-all-trades - helping in these areas is a great way to interact with the public and
share your passion of growing orchids. We want them to be excited about the opportunity to grow these lovely plants and to let them
know it is not that difficult for many types of orchids; we also want to attract many them as new members of the VOS
Sunday, March 27th

kind enough to send photos of
the beautiful flowers that can
be currently seen at their home.
A big “Thanks” to them both for
taking these photos and sending them along so that we can
all enjoy the splendor in Carla’s

VANCOUVER ORCHID SOCIETY
VANDUSEN FLORAL HALL
MINUTES OF FEBRUARY 24, 2016
Meeting was called to order at 7:00 and chaired by Evelyn Nash.
6 new members and 17 guests were welcomed.
TREASURER'S REPORT – GIC - $17,753.32, checking account $10,656.16 at end of Feb/16. Currently $680
owing to VanDusen that will be coming out of the checking account in due course.
VANCOUVER SHOW – Margaret Prat reminded up that the success of the sale depends on the members
helping out. She had posters and $ off coupons for the show, for people to take and distribute. It is important to get posters into places like GardenWorks, UBC, Southlands and Bloedel Conservatory. Also,
many Starbucks coffee shops have notice boards, so that is another place the posters can go. Margaret
also reminded us that we need sponsors for the various awards.
Preview party tickets are now on sale – attending the preview party is a great way to see who gets awards
and to get first crack at the vendors!
WE STILL NEED VOLUNTEERS FOR THE ALL THREE DAYS OF THE SALE (FRIDAY-SET UP, SATURDAY AND SUNDAY). CONTACT JENNIFER PELL (jennifer.pell@gmail.com) to sign up.
GARDENWORKS ORCHID SALE – Thanks to all the volunteers who helped out. If you had the Sunday afternoon shift, please return the binders to Jennifer Pell at your earliest convenience.
VICTORIA SHOW – We got 9 first place ribbons, 7 2nds and 3 AOS Nominations at the Victoria show on Valentines weekend. Special thanks to Ingrid Pike for helping Evelyn with the show.
NEWSLETTER - We are in need of a new editor for our newsletter effective June. If you need more information as to what is involved please contact Holly Martin our current editor. IF WE DON’T GET A VOLUNTEER TO BE EDITOR WE WILL NOT HAVE A NEWSLETTER!
MARCH CULTURE CLASS – is March 14 in the Cedar room from 6:30 to 8:30. Margaret Prat will be discussing growing in semi-hydroponic media and taking us through an AOS webinar on the subject. Please remember – Culture Classes are open to Members Only (and one of the huge perks of becoming a member)!
PCNW AOS JUDGING CENTRE – Every 2nd Saturday at the Sea Island Community Centre. Attending is a
great way to see some beautiful orchids and learn about orchid judging.
WHATSAPP CHAT ROOM – Daniel Kwok gave a brief update on how the chat room is going and told us that
he is going to start a second one. Anyone interested should speak to Daniel.
The Raffle Committee wished to thank all those who contributed to the raffle.
Daniel Lafarge gave a great talk on Phalaenopsis orchids.
