You’ll find a rich variety of visual arts and a captivating collection of interpretive displays that bring Holdfast Bay’s cultural heritage to life. Enjoy local exhibitions and permanent displays including indigenous art, water colours, oils, decor, textile art, glass-work, photography, cards and woodwork. The Glenelg Air-Raid Shelter at Glenelg Oval was built in 1942 and now houses a war museum. It’s open 1–4pm on the third Sunday of the month plus ANZAC Day and Armistice Day. (Note that access is via a steep staircase.) www.holdfast.sa.gov.au 9 BEACHES, PARKS, TRAILS COAST PARK TRAIL A level, wide picturesque 5km walking and cycling trail that follows the coastline from Glenelg to Somerton Park. MIKE TURTUR BIKEWAY Meandering through quieter back streets linking Glenelg to the city, the Mike Turtur Bikeway starts in Unley, and follows the 10km tramline as it makes its way to Glenelg. UNWIND CELEBRATE PROCLAMATION TRAIL This 3.4km self-guided walk challenges you to uncover Glenelg’s unique past and understand more about its historical importance as South Australia’s first settlement. FEDERATION TRAIL Take this trail from Glenelg to Kingston Park, to see Holdfast Bay’s landforms such as Tjilbruke Spring and coastal sand dunes, and historic homes. FORESHORE RESERVES AND BEACHES The 8km of foreshore features wide sandy beaches, large grassed reserves suitable for picnics, with many providing playgrounds, BBQs and public toilets. PLAYGROUNDS 11 GLENELG SURROUNDS JETTY ROAD, BRIGHTON Picture-perfect Brighton is a relaxed and diverse seaside suburb. It’s where many locals head in their spare time, as it offers the ideal mix of family life; entertainment by the beach; and a chic yet relaxed atmosphere. Characterised by its Art Deco style, quirky cafes, locally-made art and design shops, restaurants and the landmark Arch of Remembrance the gateway to the jetty itself. THE BROADWAY, GLENELG SOUTH The Broadway, Glenelg South comprises of a wide range of boutique offerings and specialised cafes. Explore the street’s home-ware stores, eateries, organic cafes and pubs. The Broadway Kiosk is one of Adelaide’s best-kept secrets, located on the Esplanade and treats patrons to unsurpassed coastal views. SEACLIFF AND KINGSTON PARK For one of the best views of the Holdfast Bay coastline the Kingston Park Coastal Reserve and lookout is a must see. It is also home to Tjilbruke Springs monument which commemorates the Aboriginal Dreaming story associated with the freshwater spring. It has been bubbling away for thousands of years in the sand just above the sea’s high-water mark. www.holdfast.sa.gov.au 13 GETTING TO GLENELG It’s no wonder Glenelg is one of South Australia’s most popular tourism destinations – it’s so quick and easy to get to! FROM THE ADELAIDE AIRPORT Car: Take a 5–10 minute drive along Tapley’s Hill Road and turn right down Anzac Highway or Jetty Road. Check out many car hire companies at the airport or pre book before you land. Taxi: A 10-minute cab ride from the airport taxi rank costs approximately AUD$20.00. Bus: Bus number J1 will get you to Glenelg in around 25 minutes. FROM THE ADELAIDE CBD Car: It’s approximately 20 minutes from the heart of the city to Glenelg by car. Bus: The City to Glenelg bus takes approximately 35–45 minutes. Tram: The famous ‘Bay Tram’ runs regularly from the heart of the Adelaide CBD and takes approximately 30 minutes from Victoria Square. Bike: Adelaide City Bikes are free to hire from the City; follow Anzac Highway to Glenelg or check out the Mike Turtur Bikeway.
