LINGANG
SMART HARBOR
MASTERPLANNING
MIXED USE
Chapman Taylor produced the concept
of Lingang Smart Harbor, a compact
and vibrant settlement surrounded by
an easily accessible parkland landscape
which brings together the existing
forest park, flower park, wetlands and
coastal park into one stunning setting
with a coherent landscape framework.
The concept creates a strong dynamic
between a densely packed cityscape with
a very efficient and flexible layout located
within an enveloping landscape framework,
which provides an unparalleled level of
amenity, including places for active and
passive recreation, leisure culture, sport
and ecological diversity.

The multi-award winning Trinity Leeds
is an 817,000 sq ft shopping and leisure
destination situated in the heart of the
city of Leeds, in the North of England.
The scheme, in a prime city centre
site, unites three of Leeds’ busiest
shopping thoroughfares around a
new central space and includes the
refurbishment of an existing shopping
centre. Chapman Taylor created a new
design that completely modernised and
integrated these shopping districts into
an all year round late night venue for
fashion, food and film. It is a naturally
ventilated scheme composed of buildings
linked by a series of open air arcaded
streets and public spaces above which
a self-supporting glazed grid-shell roof
rises 30.5 metres above street level.
The design, although contemporary,
echoes the character of the original
Victorian streetscape and respects
the adjacent 18th-century Holy Trinity
Church. The scheme was awarded
the ICSC ‘Best of the Best’ designed

Bristol, UK
This multi-award winning integrated
urban regeneration scheme in the heart
of Bristol combines residential, retail,
leisure, offices, transportation and new
landscaped areas, and was part of a
plan to redevelop and revitalise the
city centre. As masterplanners for the
whole urban development and designers
for the retail and leisure elements, we
introduced new buildings, open streets
and squares that are appropriately
proportioned and sit naturally within the
42
established urban scale and grain of the
city. We worked in close collaboration
with leading artist Nayan Kulkarni
and consulting engineers Schlaich
Bergermann und Partner to give rise
to one of the scheme’s most dramatic
elements; a free-form, shell-shaped glass
roof, the first of its kind in Europe

a dramatic four storey central atrium that
floods all areas with daylight. Visibility
to all shop fronts and between all levels
is excellent. The mall contains a mix
of international and local retail brands
to appeal to a broad customer base.
A range of dining and cafe choices
are located throughout the centre
with external terraces on the upper

Europolis is a 141,700m² retail and

October 2014. Since 2012 Chapman
Taylor have been working with the
client to produce corporate identity
and marketing material for the centre
including a marketing brochure, brand
guidelines and website, as well as
developing signage for the scheme.
Chapman Taylor has provided a fully
integrated design service, incorporating
external architecture, interior and graphic
design concepts. By working with
our architects and interior designers,
the Graphics team were able to gain
62
in-depth insight into the concepts
that underpin the scheme and the
client’s vision to create a sophisticated
fashion destination. This approach was
fundamental in developing the brand
book, a comprehensive guide illustrating
the various applications of the Europolis
identity, from stationery to shopping bags.
It was also crucial to ensuring the design
of the website appropriately referencing
both the European theme of the interior
malls as well as emphasising fashion.
The resulting concept was based on the
fashion style of each of the European
cities Europolis is designed to reflect:
London, Paris, Rome and Barcelona.

St Pancras International is a terminus
celebrated for its Victorian architecture.
The Grade I listed building is located in
the London Borough of Camden and
was opened in 1868. When it opened,
the arched Barlow train shed was the
largest single-span roof in the world.
In an ongoing regeneration project for
St Pancras and Kings Cross, Chapman
78
Taylor designed the integration of shops,
cafes and bars into the new two-level
concourse areas. The shops occupy the
undercroft, formerly a Victorian beer
store, opening up the floor level above
to bring in natural light and increase
visibility. The design creates high-quality
station retail, sensitively integrated with
the historic building fabric.

Chapman Taylor were appointed lead

Terminal 5 (T5) complex in 1999,
making us one of the original fifteen
first-tier suppliers. From the beginning,
we collaborated on the project with the
terminal architect, advising on the retail-
82
related operational layouts. The vision for
the £4.3 billion complex was to create
world-class retail and catering facilities.
At the outset, in addition to providing
expertise in international retail design
and trends, we undertook extensive
research with BAA to identify the world’s
best airport retailing.
The design had to work within certain
site constraints. Our design made full
use of the single-span column free roof
to combine space and natural light with
user-friendly check-in and departure
areas. It also maximised the outstanding
views of the runway, aircraft and
countryside beyond.

AIRPORT CONNECTOR
Brussels, Belgium
In 2011 Chapman Taylor won an
architecture competition to design a new
Connector building at Brussels Airport.
The building links the two existing
passenger terminals at the airport and
replaces a 200m walkway tunnel. It
contains all the departure flow from
the airport within a simple screening
area, accommodating passengers from
terminals A and B. Strategically planned
routes and spaces are designed to lead
the passengers through the buildings
and enhance their experience. Bridging
the gap between structural efficiency
and an elegant and expressive finish,
the double-height building encourages
passengers to dwell while the interior
design provides a seamless connection
between the two existing buildings.

was constructed from to the plans of

envisioned a quatrefoil plan featuring a
huge 65m diameter central dome and
the use of reinforced concrete, a new
construction material at the time. From
the early 20th century it has been a
symbol of the city with the building being
listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site
in 2006. Chapman Taylor successfully
completed a redesign of the interior
under a strict conservation policy,
converting this iconic complex into a
unique tourist attraction of international

Works included rearranging the interiors,
modifying the functional aspects of the

FLOREASCA PARK
OFFICE
Bucharest, Romania
Completed at the end of 2013,
Floreasca Park is an award winning, high
specification office development in the
Floreasca area, located just North of
the city centre of Bucharest. Chapman
Taylor was asked to create a unique and
ecological office park scheme containing
class A offices for flagship tenants. The
67,200m2 scheme comprises 2 separate
buildings that sit within an attractively
landscaped plot of 1.5 hectares, which
includes a dedicated bio-diversity habitat
heavily planted with indigenous species.
Floreasca Park was designed to provide
128
a combination of high specification, high
efficiency office space with a particular
focus on low energy consumption. All
office areas have very good natural
light, with building B containing two
atria that also support a stack-effect
ventilation system. The large, regular
floor plates vary between 1,800m2 to
3,600m2 and provide flexible office
space to accommodate the needs of
a variety of tenant requirements, from
cellular offices to conference rooms,
from open plan high-density call centres
to informal zones for social interaction.
The Floreasca location in Bucharest
offers excellent road links to the city
centre and is close to the attractive
northern residential districts and the
nearby international airports. Convenient
connections to public transport (buses,
trams and metro) provide great access
for the youthful workforce of the
international companies that have
located to the area in recent years. The
buildings’ environmental systems make
use of a ground sourced heat pump
(GSHP), highly-efficient heating and
cooling, including free night cooling
and sun shading to the south and west
facades, all of which help to reduce
energy consumption, allowing tenants to
enjoy a tangible reduction in their service
charge. A BREEAM Excellent rating
was confirmed in early 2014. Based on
the success of this project the Client
further instructed Chapman Taylor to
develop new designs for a 78,000m2
office project on the other side of the
road. This new scheme is currently under
construction with completion scheduled
for Q2 in 2016.

4,200m2 plus one level of underground
car parking. The façade is dominated by
two fully glazed 3-storey glass cubes
