Keep Intouch Monthly Newsletter - Volume 5
Dear Sarah Letters “for Seniors by Seniors” Dear Sarah, I was happily married for forty some years to a wonderful man. I ran the home and he ran the shop. We retired four years ago and two years later; he had a heart attack and passed away. We had planned to enjoy retirement together. We always seemed to have many little perks and we somehow managed to put away a small nest egg that we thought would carry us through. However, that money that was supposed to bring us joy is now paying for my health care, as well as my every day needs like food, heat, and clothing; not to mention the sickeningly high taxes on my home. Overall my health is pretty good and the doctor say’s I’ll likely live for another ten years. But how do I do that with money that looks as if it will barely last until the end of this year. I find myself getting very depressed and I find my thoughts wandering to very scary places. I really need help! Yours truly, Millie Dear Millie, I know that you lost your husband a few years ago, but grief has its own timetable. Respect your own. I know that for myself, grieving was something I tried on my own, but had to reach out. There is no shame in reaching out. Instead, another ear is helpful to sort all the loss and the anger. As for the rest, there is help for the asking. Remember that these agencies were created because our society recognizes that our older citizens have contributed to our fine land and now it is payback time. So, make the phone call to the State Office for the Aging Senior Citizens. I’ve provided that hotline number on the next page. Yes, you may have to be a little patient perhaps, but hang in there. Remember that in addition to finding solutions for yourself, you will be a valuable resource for someone else. There is also help within our own community. Take a look at the sponsors on the back page that are offering you a 10% discount on the products and services that you need. Every little bit helps! And don’t forget to get back to me. I can use your discoveries, too.
