PINTAR
CHAIRMAN’S
MESSAGE
The year 2016 has started rather well for PINTAR
Foundation. An additional 14 new schools have been
adopted by five PINTAR Members this quarter, proof
of the continual commitment from our members
towards the PINTAR Programme and their belief that
the Programme can contribute significantly towards
developing the nation’s human capital.
4
As always, the Foundation strives to remain aligned
to the Ministry of Education’s aspirations when
advocating programmes to our members.
This year, PINTAR members and the Foundation alike
will be increasing their efforts to implement Highly
Immersive Programme (HIP) in English that would help
students step up the usage of the language and thus
contribute to their proficiency in it.
We are confident that the programmes and activities
planned and implemented by our members and
partners in their PINTAR schools will help increase
the students’ exposure to the English Language, thus
creating an immersive (English) environment.
This will, in the longer term, help prepare them for the
new format of the Primary School Assessment Test
(UPSR) 2016 announced by the Examination Board
of the MOE recently, where the English Language
paper, specifically, would be split into two papers –
comprehension and writing – to help students improve
their proficiency in the language.
Despite the good start for PINTAR, some members
are facing many challenges, largely due to the
economic environment and the plummeting price of
oil. In this scenario, extracting value out of what we do
is imperative.
For the Foundation, the clarion call is to provide more
useful services and value to our members so that the
PINTAR Programme can make a positive impact and
yield the desired outcomes for our beneficiaries.
Our small team at PINTAR Foundation is tasked with
carrying out numerous projects across the country
with limited resources, but I believe that with your
support and cooperation, we can do it.
I am optimistic that the PINTAR Programme will
continue to bring positive changes to the lives of
underperforming students and create better impact
in future.
I hope in the upcoming months, we can see a lot of
positive changes happen to these PINTAR schools and
more members coming on board to adopt the PINTAR
Programme as their solid corporate responsibility
(CR) platform.
Yours sincerely,
Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Utama Arshad Ayub

PINTAR
Member companies converged
at the Ramada Plaza Kuala Lumpur
for the PINTAR 25th Members’
Roundtable 2016 on 16 February.
At the Roundtable, PINTAR shared with its members
and partners on the Members’ Year-end Report 2015
including the Performance of PINTAR schools in the
UPSR & PT3 examinations, and the latest updates on
PINTAR programmes and activities.
In the sharing sessions, participants learned more
about the Highly Immersive Programme (HIP) from
PEMANDU (Performance Management and Delivery
Unit) Associate Director, Ms Tan Mei Ling, from the
Prime Minister’s Department. She talked about the
whole school approach towards HIP, which is aligned
with the Malaysia Education Blueprint, and how the
HIP aims to codify best practices of school leaders and
scale up to all school via sharing, learning and support.
She also shared a few examples of collaboration with
external parties such as the private sector, and how they
help support activities, namely in-class, out-of-class,
extra classes and outreach programmes, that would
contribute highly to the effectiveness and sustainability
of HIP and create a highly immersive environment
in schools.
The session was followed by a presentation by one of
PINTAR’s pioneer members, UEM Sunrise Berhad, who
shared their corporate responsibility (CR) approach
towards managing its 21 PINTAR schools. Its Head
of Corporate Communication, Puan Nik Surina
Nik Abdullah, and her team presented on their CR
activities and programmes, particularly their back-toschool support programme, road safety awareness
programme, academic excellence programme and High
Achievers’ Award.
Organised biannually, the Roundtable allows PINTAR
members and partners to network, exchange ideas and
experience, and discuss on issues that would lead to
better programmes for PINTAR schools and influence
student outcomes.

STAKEHOLDER RELATIONSHIP NEWS
ENGAGING TOWARDS BETTER OUTCOMES
The success of PINTAR Programme lies in the effective collaboration of various stakeholders. By working
closely and addressing the needs and concerns of each stakeholder, we at PINTAR Foundation ensure our
PINTAR students and schools will ultimately gain the best out of the Programme.
MEETING WITH
STATE JPN AND MOE
As part of PINTAR’s ongoing effort to engage with
the stakeholders, the PINTAR team has met up with
officials from the Perak State Education Department
(JPN) in February, and JPN Selangor and JPN Sarawak
in March.
8
The visit to the JPNs is a platform for the Foundation to
update the respective JPNs on PINTAR programmes,
as well to discuss issues relating to PINTAR schools,
including issues on school adoption, and schools’ or
teachers’ involvement in programmes. The meetings
are also aimed to improve the communication
between the Foundation and the JPN officers.
The PINTAR team also made an appointment to meet
with officials of the School Management Division
(BPSH) of the Ministry of Education (MOE) to report
on the progress of all PINTAR schools.
The team, led by PINTAR Chief Executive Officer
(CEO), Puan Karimah Tan, also presented the impact
of the PINTAR programme pertaining to the academic
achievements, specifically for the UPSR and PT3 2015
examinations, and the LINUS achievement which
has increased significantly in 2015 compared to the
previous year for the same cohort of students.
PINTAR hopes to work closely with the BPSH team
to ensure better measurement of outcomes for its
PINTAR schools.

ONBOARDING
SERVICES
The PINTAR Stakeholder Relationship Management
(SRM) team together with representatives from
three PINTAR Members visited their respective
PINTAR schools for the school onboarding service.
In February, teams from PINTAR and Telekom
Malaysia Berhad (TM) visited SK Arau in Perlis
and SMK Mendamit in Sarawak. While in March,
the PINTAR SRM team went with the team from
UEM Group Berhad to SK Seri Gemilang in Penang
and SK Kampung Batu in Kuala Lumpur, and with
the team from Danajamin Berhad to SK Petaling
in Selangor.
During the onboarding sessions, the school leaders
and teachers were briefed about the PINTAR
programme and its mechanism.
The session familiarises them to the PINTAR
Member who have adopted them; and to the role of
various stakeholders in the three-year relationship
– PINTAR Foundation, their Sponsor Company as
well as the School’s role and expectations.
The session also allows school leaders and
teachers to formally get acquainted with the
Sponsor Company’s person-in-charge (PIC) as
they focus on activities that will be implemented
together with the Company during the three-year
adoption period. Other stakeholders invited to the
session included officials from the State Education
Department and the District Education Office
where the school is located.

career
camp
In the final leg of the Danajamin100 (DJ100)
Batch 1 programme, the students – in their
quest for success – attended a Career Camp
Programme which focused on competencies
related to interpersonal communication,
public speaking and personal development.
10
The three-day programme, held at the
Cyberview Resort and Spa in Selangor from
24-27 February, highlighted to the students
on the challenges of the 21st Century for
young graduates and how to face the situation
if it happens to them.
The programme modules aimed to develop
the student’s own strength and potential
to communicate effectively; demonstrate
their oral skills in public speaking; build their
confidence to express their views and ideas;
recognise their own communication strengths
through profiling and use various avenues
of communication.
In addition, the students underwent a
career aptitude assessment and had a
better understanding of career planning and
decision making.
The DJ100 Batch 1 – comprising 30 PINTAR
secondary students from schools within
the states of Selangor and Negeri Sembilan,
namely, SMK Munshi Abdullah, SMK Gombak
Setia, SMK Pulau Indah, SMK Juasseh and
SMR Agama Repah – is expected to graduate
from the programme in April 2016.

The DJ100 Batch 2 programme is well
underway, with 30 secondary students from
selected PINTAR schools in the states of
Kedah, Penang and Perak.
In this quarter, the students attended a

and use thinking maps which are graphic
organisers that support specific thinking
skills and allow them to organise information
for better learning.
The DJ100 Batch 2 involved students
from SMK Ayer Hangat and SMK Agama

ARENA OF YOUTH
MY CITY 2050 COMPETITION
Eight PINTAR secondary schools are into their final
phase of developing a vision of a futuristic city
before the finale of the My City 2050 (MY2050)
Competition – one of two competitions in the Arena
of Youth Programme by the Construction Industry
Development of Malaysia (CIDB) – which will be held
in April during the International Construction Week.
The participating PINTAR schools are SMK Ampang
Pecah and SMK Munshi Abdullah in Selangor; SMK
Kota Kuala Muda and SMK Ayer Hangat in Kedah;
SMK Kompleks Sultan Abu Bakar and SMK Seri Kota
Paloh in Johor; SMK Sg Ara in Penang, and SM Sultan
Hj Ahmad Shah in Pahang.
12
Prior to embarking on the actual task of developing
a vision of a city in 2050 in this final phase, the
competitors had, since November 2015, attended
several sessions conducted by experienced
professionals from the construction related industry,
and were coached on how to
create a sustainable city for the
year 2050.
The Arena of Youth challenge for
secondary schools is to develop
a city of the future in the
MY2050 competition where
schools will
compete
for prizes
which will be awarded by a panel of judges during
the finale.
The MY2050 Competition is a constructionrelated youth empowerment competition aimed at
cultivating the next generation of builders, specifically
for Malaysian youths aged between 15-17 years old.
The selection of this particular age group is vital,
considering their thoughts and ideas on planning the
cities of 2050 are essential considerations as they
are the ones who will inherit the Malaysian cities
they help to conceptualise.
The finale is scheduled to be held from 12-13 April
at the Kompleks Kerja Raya in Kuala Lumpur where
the teams from PINTAR schools and international
schools will present the model of their futuristic
cities to the panel of judges who will review all
entries received and select a winner.
Let’s pray that one of our eight PINTAR schools
will become the winner for the
MY2050 competition
and best of luck to
our
participating
PINTAR students!

PINTAR
CORE
MODULE
FOR
TEACHERS
PCT Module on 21st Century Learning
in PINTAR schools
Over the last few months, PINTAR Foundation has been
working with a consultant to develop the PINTAR Core
Module for Teachers (PCT).
14
This is an initiative by the Foundation to set a common
standard for PINTAR schools to ensure the impact of
the PINTAR Programme is more even and effective
across the schools adopted by different members.
This project addresses PINTAR Core Module 3: Capacity
& Capability Building for School Leaders and Teachers,
and will include not just the development of modules
for teachers, but also train the trainer (TOT) workshop,
Monitoring & Evaluation (M&E) process as well as
Impact Assessment tool.
Developed in line with the MOE’s requirement
for 21st century learning in schools, the trainings
conducted were to improve problem solving and
critical thinking among PINTAR teachers & students;
collaborative learning among students in the classroom;
metacognition (awareness of own learning and thinking
next steps) through self and peer assessment, and
enhance communication, behaviour and social skills
among students.
A pilot run for the PCT Module on 21st Century Learning
was conducted at SK Batu 38 earlier this year.
It is expected that PINTAR Members will adopt these
PCT modules for their schools once the pilot has been
successfully completed.
