Release 19 October 2013 BILA Book Prize 2013 On 18 October 2013 the BILA Book Prize was awarded in the Lloyd's Library on the occasion of BILA's AGM. The winning book was "Research Handbook on International Insurance and Regulation" edited by Julian Burling and Kevin Lazarus and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. Over 40 authors contributed to this book from different parts of the world. Alison Green, the chairman of the BILA Charitable Trustees announced the prize and congratulated the authors. She said: "This worthy winner of the BILA book prize is a highly useful reference tool for all those wishing to read about developments in insurance law and regulation around the world. Its comparative approach is illuminating for lawyers, insurance professionals and regulators. The editors are to be congratulated on securing contributions from an array of distinguished academics and professionals who have combined to produce interesting legal and regulatory insights into the global insurance world." The other BILA Charitable Trustees, namely Tim Hardy, Professor Malcolm Clarke and Professor Robert Merkin were also present at the prize giving. BILA Charitable Trust was created to help encourage and support those engaged in studying or researching the interrelationship between law and insurance. The Trustees have established a prize known as the “British Insurance Law Association Book Prize”. The Prize of £1,000 is available to be awarded annually to the author (or joint authors) of a published work constituting in the opinion of the Trustees the most notable contribution to literature in the field of law as it affects insurance. To qualify for the prize the work must first have been published in the English language in the calendar year immediately preceding the year in which the prize is to be awarded. Authors wishing to have their work considered for the Prize should apply in writing to the Chair of the Trustees before 30 April in the year following publication, submitting one copy of their work. The Trustees in their absolute discretion may decide that the prize shall not be awarded in any year and the decision of the Trustees on any matter relating to the Prize shall be final.
