I have great pleasure in conveying my best wishes to all of you. NarseeMonjee has a reputation for attracting the best students in their chosen faculty. Today, we are living in a world which has become smaller due to the advancements in transport, communication and information technology. As a result of this, trade and commerce have increased substantially and have come to dominate the relations between countries. This means that education in Commerce and Economics is becoming more relevant at any time in the past. However, Challenges and Opportunities are two sides of the same coin. Modern education, curriculum development and teaching methodologies have to keep pace with the demand of the economic environment. The manager, businessman and the entrepreneur of today need many more weapons in armoury. Holistic education should include all round development of a student. I am glad that all of you undertake various co-curricular activities which sharpen your personality, managerial and inter-personal skills. Patel President, SVKM 1 BRIEF HISTORY OF N.M. COLLEGE SVKM’s NarseeMonjee College of Commerce & Economics, popularly known as NM College, is a leading college affiliated to Mumbai University. It was established in 1964 by Shri Vile Parle KelavaniMandal (SVKM), a professionally managed trust with a large number of prestigious academic institutions, under its umbrella. SVKM is the brain child of leading industrialists and socially conscious philanthropists who wanted to contribute to the local area by founding educational institutions. The Mandal has an extensive local base with a large primary membership. The Status of NM as a minority institution for the Gujarati Linguistic Community is a significant achievement in providing access to students from the Gujarati Speaking Community, to the most coveted college in the Commerce and Business Management Streams. Although the College started by focusing on education to make students self-reliant and to prepare them for careers in the commerce field, it gradually extended the scope of its activities to include the molding of the overall personality of the students. With greater competition in every walk of life it has become a necessity to prepare students to shine in all areas. The year 2014-2015 was celebrated as the “Golden Jubilee” year of the College, as the college was established in the year 1964. It is a very happy and proud moment in the history of N M College to be celebrating its 50th year of existence. The college provides a comprehensive, out of class room experience including service opportunities, competitive, athletic, cultural and leadership programmes 5 Infrastructure N M provides excellent infrastructure to facilitate the education process and enhance the learning ability of the students. It aims at developing intellectual capabilities and an understanding of the relationship between education and the real world. The renovated building includes a Wi-Fi campus, modern air-conditioned office block, modern well equipped air-conditioned classrooms, well planned corridors and 2 elevators. The college uses state-of-art technology in its teaching process making use of mike systems, overhead projectors, LCD projectors. A well-equipped resource Generation Room is set-up for the faculty to prepare their lectures and carry out research in their subject. Every faculty is assigned a Laptop. Hygienic rest rooms are available on each floor. A separate ladies common room is there for girl students to relax and chill out comfortably. Classrooms The Center offers 30 dedicated Lecture rooms that seat between forty to 140 students. Our lecture rooms are chosen by dozens of companies and organizations every year for small groups meetings, such as internal staff meetings and training, board meetings, client presentations, internal strategy discussions and other similar meetings, including break-out sessions for larger meetings. Some highlights and features of our conference rooms include: Air Conditioner for each room Inbuilt LCD Projector Whiteboard, flip chart and markers Natural lighting for a brighter and more inviting atmosphere Fluorescent and incandescent lighting with clearly marked controls Hard writing surfaces for easier note taking Comfortable, ergonomic seating UGC network resource center is started in library with 5 computers with internet having Wi-fi connectivity and 1 HP laserjet network printer with scanner and fax for use of students and teachers. 6 Computer laboratory: The well-equipped computer laboratories with 80 computers and Wi-Fi facility enhance the learning process and enable the proper conduct of University prescribed courses. Branded Personal Computers are installed in two computer labs, all networked to facilitate teaching on small batches, with adequate faculty attention. All new computers in lab have dedicated leased line for internet connectivity and two network printers, which can be used by staff and students. I.J. Patel Library Objectives of Library • • • • To acquire, update, maintain and provide a qualitative and quantitative collection of books, periodicals and other instructional material of electronic resources to support the academic programme and educational objectives of the college. To include in collection various fields of knowledge as well as of career and character building. To provide quality services to faculty and students for achieving their curricular as well as co-curricular goals, with the help of technology, but not as a substitute for personal service. To inculcate reading habit among students and to encourage collaborative efforts among library staff and students to maximum utilization of library resources. The Library was established in the year 1964. The Total area admeasuring is approximately 7400 sq. ft. divided in two floors. The Library has a state of art infrastructure and has a reading room capacity of more than 300 students. Every table has facility to plug-in the laptop. The Library is centrally air conditioned with Wi-Fi connectivity and UGC Network Resource Center. Students can recommend any book to the Librarian at any time during the year. The recommended books will be purchased after getting approval from the respective Head of the Department and the Principal. The UGC Network Resource Center with five PC terminals is available free of change for accessing databases, OPAC (computerized catalogue) and Internet, strictly as per the rules. The network printer provides the facility to print the pages. Suggestion Box: Students can drop their recommendations for books and any other suggestions in this box kept near book showcases. The suggestion box opens on every Saturday at 2-00 p.m. The Library Committee consists of the staff members from Degree College, Junior College, Unaided Courses, Librarian and Assistant Librarian. American Centre library, Indian Commerce Association and Maharashtra Economic Development Council. Collection of books, journals and magazines on biographies, career guidance, personality development, 7 competitive examinations, CA studies, ICWA, General Knowledge, etc. The library has institutional membership of British Council Library www.mylibrary.britishcouncil.org Direct access to several databases related to online journals, company data, laws, e-books, etc. useful for your studies, projects and exercises from http://ezproxy.svkm.ac.in:2048/login For login Id and password of these databases please contact UGC-NRC Resource Centre in library. Library Services The students can approach the counter for any purpose like Current Reading, Home Issue, Reference or getting information related to any topic of interest. I - General services: 1) Computerised catalogue (OPAC) where one can locate for books according to author, title, publisher, accession number and classification number. 2) The following material is made available from the library counter Books for current reading Reading lists of interested books Syllabus Books for home issue for a week Bibliographies on various topics Competitive Exams related books Question papers CDs. Books on careers Reference sources such as dictionaries, encyclopedia’s, year books Journal articles Index Newspaper clippings on various topics useful for student’s assignments and projects 3) Home lending of books- textbooks and other books are issued for one week. 4) Periodicals - Journals and magazines are displayed in the reading room. In case of any journal not found on display please ask at the counter. The periodicals are available for reading within the library. However, if any student wants any periodical for home issue, they should contact the person at the counter. 5) Daily newspapers are kept at the counter and available for reading to everybody. 6) Electronic Journal Databases accessible from UGC-NRS in library and also from home. 7) Reference Service- This service is especially for projects and assignments. 8) Book-Bank- Textbooks are provided for use during one academic year. The books are required to be returned as soon as the exams get over. The application forms are made available from the library counter only during the prescribed dates on the notice put up at the beginning of every year. 9) Reading Room for self-study – facility after the library hours. 10) Internet access through UGC Network Resource Center and Wi-Fi. Anybody using these facilities is required to register themselves. 8 11) Services to ex-students and visitors. II Extension Activities: 1) Inter library loan & referral service for other libraries within Mumbai. 2) CD-ROMs viewing on multimedia computers any student can view the CDs available in library. 3) Scanning and printing. Rules for Students using Library • • • • • • • • • • • Talking loudly, discussing, loitering, eating, smoking, spitting, using mobile, shifting chairs, reserving chairs, scratching on furniture is strictly prohibited. All persons using the Library are subject to the discipline of the college. All those entering the library are requested to observe silence, behave in decent manner and maintain discipline Please take permission of the counter staff for entry inside the counter or UGC Network Resource Center. For entry inside the counter the students are required to keep all their belongings aside and allowed to carry only their library card and identity card. Please handle the books carefully and do not mutilate them in any way while using. The books issued for home reading must be returned on the due date mentioned on date slip behind the book. If the same book is required again for the next week, student must renew it on the due date or is subjected to pay fine of Rs. 1/- per day per book or as per the then notice. In case of loss of a library book the Librarian should be contacted immediately. The lost book is supposed to be replaced immediately. The cost of the book will be recovered only if the book is not available in the market. Other material like syllabus copies, question papers, periodicals, CDs, books for current reading, etc. issued from the counter are expected to be returned on the same day, failing which a fine of Rs. 5/- per day will be levied. The reference books marked with “R” are for using within the library and not allowed to be taken out of the library for any purpose. All the students are required to strictly adhered to the above rules and cooperate with the library staff for smooth functioning of the library. The Librarian has authority to maintain order in the library and take action against any user who knowingly or persistently breaks any library regulation. Procedure for using Computerised Catalogue through LIBSYS Software • • • • • At SVKM's N M College library we are using LibSys for library automation. Users can access library books through OPAC (Online Public Access Catalogue) in Libsys with the help of URL: http://192.168.2.65:8080/jopac/ This URL is accessible from any computer within the campus. On this URL select site of NM College, Mumbai. Click on New Search menu. In search window enter keyword and select to browse the documents by Author, Title, Subject, or class number options in the box next to “in”. Deselect other college names, except NM College, Mumbai. 9 • • • • • You can also do this by selecting “none” first at the bottom of this box and then select only NM College, Mumbai. This will give you the list of books available in NM College only. For detail description you can click on full detail. Click on “Back” to go back to the list. Please note down Class number and Accession number of the book you have selected and show it at the counter to ask for that book. “Back to Search” will take you back to search window. With OPAC you can search books By Author - It is the search for books if the Author of the book is known. Search begins with the surname of the author. By Title - It is the search for books if the Title of the book is known. Classified - This is the search for books by Classification number Note: After completing use of OPAC in library please do not shut the software and computer. A spacious gymkhana has infrastructure and facilities for indoor games. The gymkhana staff is highly qualified. The college participates in games from the district to the national levels. Well-known coaches train students for indoor and outdoor games, training them to excel at inter-college tournaments at national and international levels. The college has ensured that the staff and students have access to health facilities regularly. A Health-cumCounseling Centre has been operational for several years. A qualified medical practitioner visits the college daily. Students and staff consult the doctor. In times of emergency, help from the doctors in the vicinity is taken. Bachelor of Commerce (B.Com.) is a Three year Degree Program comprising Two Semesters every year i.e. over all B.Com. is a Six Semester Degree Program. About Self Finance Courses Keeping in view the demand of the industry and the market and ensuring that the students graduating from the University are trained according to the requirement of the industry and equipped with the required skill sets, University of Mumbai introduced the Self Finance Courses in 1999. Initially it offered Bachelor of Management Studies (BMS) and Bachelor of Science (information Technology) B.Sc. (I.T.) and later added a series of courses in the growing sectors like Banking & Insurance, Financial Markets, Hospitality Studies, Aviation, Nautical Science etc. The Curriculum, Course Content and the methodology used by the teachers to deliver the content not only ensures that the students excel in his/her chosen field but also acquires the necessary skill sets. Unlike the other traditional courses where the student strength in a class is 120, in Self Finance Courses it is restricted to 60 students per division. To provide opportunities for an all round development of students’ personality. 14 Admission Information Bachelor of Commerce: The entire admission procedure is according to the guidelines issued to thecolleges by the University of Mumbai. According to the Hon’ble High Court verdict, preference is given to in-house students (on the basis of merit) up to the sanctioned capacity of the F.Y.B.Com Class. After admitting all in-house students, if there is any vacancy, it is filled according to the University guidelines. Amended Ordinance 2151 is read as under: First Year B.Com ◆0.2151: A candidate for being eligible for admission to the three year course leading to the Bachelor of Commerce different divisional boards of the Maharashtra State Secondary and Higher Secondary Education. The external guide shall be approved by the Principal of the College/Head of the Department. 5. The project report shall be neatly typed in Times Roman in 12 points doubled spaced on A4 size paper. The project report shall not be less than 35 pages. 6. The project report shall be hard bound and the title of the project, name, class, seat number and the name of the college/department shall be printed on the upper face of the hard bound copy. 7. A learner shall submit two copies of every project at least one month before the commencement of the Viva Examination. Both the copies shall be certified by the internal guide / supervising teacher, the external guide and the Principal of the College / Head of the Department. One copy of the project shall be retained by the college/department and the other copy shall be returned to the learner after certification but before the commencement of the presentation and viva-voce Examination. The student shall bring his/her copy of the project during the Presentation and Viva-voce Examination. Evaluation of project report 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. The project will be evaluated for 40 marks of which 20 marks shall be for the hard-copy of the project, 10 marks for the presentation (not necessarily using computers. Can be oral presentation) and 10 marks for the Viva-Voce. The Principal / Head of the Institution / Head of the Department shall make arrangements for appointment of External Examiners for evaluation of the project at least 8 days before the commencement of the Viva Examination. The hard copy of the project shall be evaluated jointly by the Internal Guide and the External Examiner for 10 marks each. The presentations of the learners shall be evaluated by the Internal Guide. The Principal of the College/Head of the Department shall display a schedule of conduct of the Presentation of the project at least 8 days in advance. The viva voce shall be conducted jointly by the External Examiner in the presence of the Internal Guide / Coordinator and will be evaluated by the External Examiner only. The marks obtained by the learner in the Internal Assessment i.e. in the project will not be disclosed to the learner before the declaration of the results of the semester concerned. 31 A student who fails to submit the project in a course even after being granted the opportunity to submit the project with additional attempt will be declared fail in that course. B) Semester End Examinations - 60% (60 Marks) i. ii. Duration - These examinations shall be of 2 Hours duration. Question Course Pattern:1. There shall be four questions each of 15 marks. 2. All questions shall be compulsory with internal choice within the questions. 3. Question may be subdivided into sub-questions a, b, c...and the allocation of marks depend on the weightage of the topic. Responsibility of Assessment The assessment of Part “A” i.e. Internal Assessment as mentioned above for the Semester I to IV shall be processed by the Colleges / Institutions / University Departments of their learners while the University shall conduct the assessment of Part “B” i.e. the Semester End Examination for Semesters I to IV. The Internal Assessment marks of learners appearing for Semester I to IV shall be submitted to the University by the respective colleges/ Institutions before the commencement of respective Semester End Examinations. The results shall be declared by the University after processing the marks obtained by the learner in the Internal Assessment and the marks awarded to the learners in Semester End Examination. The grade card shall be issued by the University after converting the marks into grades. Passing Standards APPLICABLE TO THE STUDENTS ADMITTED TO THE M.COM. COURSE DURING THE ACADEMIC YEAR 20112012 OR PRIOR AND TO THE STUDENTS OF M.COM. PART II TO BE ADMITTED DURING THE ACADEMIC YEAR 2012-2013 OR PRIOR. Award of class Those of the successful candidates who obtain at least 60 percent of the marks on aggregate in Part I and Part II examination taken together will be placed in the First Class and those obtaining at least 50 percent in the Second Class. Improvement of Class O.2316:Candidates who have passed the M.Com. Degree Examination of this University byPapers with the Pass Class / Second Class and who desire to improve their class to Second Class or at least 55% marks or First Class / at least 55% marks or First Class respectively will be permitted at their option to appear again for the same examination with the same subjects in both the parts viz. Part I and Part II simultaneously without being required to keep any terms within a period of FIVE years following the April or October examination in which they pass. O.5980: A learner who has kept terms satisfactorily for Semester I & Semester II of the course shall be permitted to keep terms for Semester III of the course notwithstanding that he/she may not have appeared for the Semester I & Semester II examination or failed thereat. O.5981: A learner who has kept terms satisfactorily for Semester III of the course shall be permitted to keep terms for Semester IV of the course notwithstanding that he/she may not have appeared for the Semester III examination or failed thereat. O.5982: However, no learner will be allowed to appear for Semester IV examination, unless he/she has passed all the courses of Semester I & II examination previously. O.5983: The result of Semester IV shall be kept in abeyance (RLE) until the learner passes each of lower Semesters Examinations (i.e. Semester I, II and III). O.5984: The result of Semester IV Examination of M.Com. Programme will not be declared of such learner/s who has not obtained their Degree (Convocation) Certificate of the Bachelor's Programme earlier from their concerned College/ Institution / University as applicable. IMPROVEMENT OF RESULTS: O.5985: A learner who is declared to have passed in Semester I examination will not be allowed to reappear for the Semester I Examination for improvement of his/her result. O.5986: A learner who is declared to have passed in Semester II examination will not be allowed to reappear for the Semester II Examination for improvement of his/her result. O.5987: A learner who is declared to have passed in Semester III examination will not be allowed to reappear for the Semester III Examination for improvement of his/her result. 33 O.5988: A learner who is declared to have passed in Semester IV examination will not be allowed to reappear for the Semester IV Examination for improvement of his/her result. O.5989: Notwithstanding anything contained in Regulations mentioned above a learner/s who appears for Semester I, Semester II, Semester III or Semester IV Examination of the Master of Commerce Programme and gives a declaration in writing to the University through the Head of the Department/Principal of the College / Head of the constituent recognized institution through which he is appearing for examination, to the effect "to consider null and void the results of the Semester I or Semester II or Semester III or Semester IV examination", as the case may be, within one week from the date of conclusion of the examination concerned, if he/she does not obtain the following in the Semester concerned:a. The overall grade laid down for the award of a grade B at the Examinations of the semester concerned at the M. Com. Programme OR b. At least grade B (55% marks or grade points 05) on the aggregate (which is a requirement at the Master's degree examination laid down for by the University Grants Commission for the appointment of a teacher) OR c. The GPA laid down for the award of overall grade A at the Examination of M. Com.programme. In this case if he/she does not obtain the grade in the concerned Semester as specified in (a), (b) or (c) as the case may be, the result of such learner shall be declared as null and void, marks statement will not be provided and examination fees will not be refunded. 1. The revised M. Com. Degree course has been introduced from June 1980 the students who kept the terms for Part I and Part II under the old course will be considered for their appearance for the respective examinations under the revised course of yearly pattern only i.e. Part I and Part II. 2. The terms kept by the students for the Part I or Part II of the M. Com. degree examinations under the old course will NOT be recognized for the purpose of their appearance for the respective examinations under this newly introduced Semester based Credit & Grading System. O.5990: Learner who has passed the M. Com. Examination of this University by papers under the Semester Based Credit & Grading Based system with the overall grades mentioned in Column 1 and who desire to improve their overall grades as shown in column 2, will be permitted at their option to appear again for the Semester End Examinations Only (and not the Internal Assessment) of the Semester I, Semester II, Semester III and Semester IV with the courses opted earlier by them in all the four semesters viz. Examination under the provisions of this Ordinance fails to improve his/her grade, his/her performance at such re-appearance will be ignored and the result will be declared null and void, marks statement will not be provided and examination fees will not be refunded. 35 UMANG 2014 UMANG is the annual intercollegiate, cultural festival of NarseeMonjee College of Commerce and Economics. Over a period of just 14 years, it has become an integral part of NM College. Ever since its bricks were laid in 2000, Umang has been striving hard to outdo itself with every passing year and the results are mindboggling. Umang has a workforce of nearly 500 students. The mascot ‘Uma’ jumping over the moon and the motto ‘Reach for more…” inspires Umangites to bring something new to the table every year. Umang offers a variety of events from workshops to competitive events. It caters to every taste be it performing arts, literary arts, fine arts, managerial skills or sports. Various celebrated artists and so many more have graced Umang’s red carpet. In 2008, Umang was honoured by the presence of Former Indian President Dr. A. P. J Abdul Kalam, who addressed an enthused crowd of students. In 2014, Umang, themed as ‘The Urban Boulevard’ organised between 14th August, 2014 and 17thAugust ,2014. At its inauguration session Principal, Shri Sunil Mantri released the first copy of Sans Frontieres, the official Umang magazine. It carried interviews of SonakshiSinha and Karan Talwar and various other articles and features. This year, Team Umang initiated a Comedy Fest which drove the sanest into hysterics. Comedy troupes like Shitzngiggles and The East India Comedy kept the crowd engaged with their witticism. Another major attraction at Umang was the Fine Arts Exhibit- “Stairway to Eternity”. Besides the 4 days event,saw well known personalities like Ajay Devgan, RohitShetty, ShahidKapur, ShraddhaKapoor director Mr. Vishal Bhardwaj, BipashaBasu and SonamKapoor, etc. Events such as Mr and Miss Umang and War of VJ’s (Round 1) had Gauhar Khan and BarunSobti as judges respectively while the events such as Contemporary Dance had judges from the Terence Lewis Dance Academy. Some events like A Capella Singing, Western Band Event, Beat boxing and Junk Instruments truly incorporated the theme of Umang 2014-The Urban Boulevard. 36 The first PROnite was a VH1 Supersonic 101 nite ft. Funkagenda who is known for winning both the Ibiza DJ ‘Best Ibiza Track 2008’ and the Beatport ‘Best Tech House Track 2008’ award for his 'Man With The Red Face' collaboration with Mark Knight. Funkagenda was also presented with the Ibiza DJ ‘Best Newcomer 2008’ and DJ Mag ‘Best Breakthrough DJ 2009’ awards for his solo achievements. Another event was the Retrospectrum. KabirBedi and AmolGupte were the Retrospectrum Speakers this year. They were an inspiration to many as they spoke about the trials of their lives and their tryst with the performing arts. The major attraction of Umang this year was the Smaaash zone which included two unique unregistered games, Kick-point and Human Bowling. Other attractions included Laser Tag where players attempt to score points by tagging targets, typically with a hand-held infrared-emitting targeting device. This year Umang also hosted its first ever UMUN-The Umang Model United Nations which featured two real life UN Committees- Disarmament and Security Committee [DISEC] and Human Rights Council which gave an opportunity to discuss, debate and deliberate with other contemporaries on a global scale. This year, with the efforts of over 500 students, Umangseems to have stepped over the boundaries of time and reached a much larger audience than it may have originally intended. 37 ANNUAL COLLEGE DAY The 50th College Annual Day Celebration was held on the 23rd December 2014 at the Bhaidas Auditorium from 9am onwards. Shri Amrishbhai Patel, President of SVKM was the Chief Guest for the day and Mr. Yasin Merhant, an alumnus from the 1986 batch and India’s world and Asian Snooker Champion was the Guest of Honor. The show started with an Invocation to the lord Ganesha and Saraswati by Sonali Karnik, Bhatavdekar and Aashish Chaajjed and Aaparna Bhagwat. Sonali is alumnus of our college form the 1996 batch and Aashish graduated in the year 2013-2014. This rendition was followed by a Pooja Dance Sangat Shodham, a semi classical in praise of the Lord Shiva. This academic year is a special year for the college. It is its Golden Jubilee Year. And hence it was decided to celebrate the 50th Annual Day with great grandeur. The Annual day Celebration was also attended by the former teaching and non-teaching staff Members which made it a nostalgic moment for them as well as the present staff. All the former Principals of the college, Dr. U.R.Koli, Dr. Mrs Urmila Rai, Mr. Desai, Mr. P.K. Kapadia, Dr. Welling, Mrs. Sangita Kher were felicitated at the hands of Shri Amrishbhai Patel to commemorate their service in making this institution one of the best Colleges in the city of Mumbai and in the country. This year also saw two best employees being felicitated at the hands of the President of SVKM, Mrs.Vaishali Dawar, Librarian from the teaching staff and Mr. Rajesh Bhosle form the Non-teaching staff. The Principal, Shri Sunil B. Mantri read out the college report highlighting the efforts put in by the former Principals to make this college the most sought after college in the city. This was followed by felicitating the present students in their achievements in academics as well extra and co-curricular activities. The formal function was followed by an entertainment programme titled “Down Memory Lane” which was written and directed by our own alumnus Mr. Rahul Antani. Down Memory Lane was a journey of the 50 glorious years of the college. We started from the era of Prof. Gangadgar Gadgil to Mrs. Sangita Kher showcasing the journey of the college in the era of the Principals that came to the chair and lead the college to its position till date. The programme was interspersed by dances choreographed by the legendary folk dance teacher of our college Ms. Indumati Lele popularly and loving called as Didi. The present students presented the dances choreographed by her like Pangi, Chapeli, Kashmiri, Bihu, Kalbelia, Garba. This was a Tribute to the dance teacher who was responsible of our college folk dance team being popular world wide as our dancers had visited Russia to present their folk Dance Chualia. Our Alumni Mr. Bakul Thakker and Mrs. Smita Sharma Dalal paid homage to Didi on behalf of the college. 38 39 DRISHTI, Annual Inter Collegiate Management Festival Narsee Monjee College of Commerce and economics organized a three day Management Festival from 15th to 17th of February 2015. The festival was organized to enlarge the vision of all the aspiring management students so as to help them soar high in the sky of success and growing competition. “Innovating Management” being the motto and tagline of the festival makes it clear that there is something that all the students should look forward to while participating in it. In its 16th year, Drishti left no stone unturned to entice the crowd with magnificent and brain teasing events. The festival helps in combining the elements of management, fun, sports and culture all under one roof and in the most glorious fashion. The festival is also keeping up with its legacy “not repeating a single event” which also serves as the USP of the festival. This year “Drishti” not only innovated the concept of management but also tried to capture hope in the life of Mumbaikars.The theme for this year was Pandora KaDabba which emphsised on the idea of hope prevailing over evils in the context of Mumbai and its every day evils. Thus, this year all the members of Drishti tried to bring about a change in the ideology of the people as to how hope can outshadow the darks of evil in life. 40 ANNUAL SPORTS DAY- BE A SPORT 2014-15 The Gymkhana of N.M College organized its Annual Sports Meet “Be a Sport “on 20th and 22nd December, 2014. Around 750 students participated in various events such as Chess, Carrom, Table Tennis, Box Cricket, Football, Throwball, Volleyball, Basketball, Shot put and Tug-of-War. The staff felicitated the winners of all these games. 41 Besides this, many students have excelled in the field of sports by participating in various sport eventsathletics, badminton, chess, cricket, football, handball, half marathon, judo, rugby, shooting and table tennis at inter-collegiate, university, state, national level tournaments. 42 National Players National level player Bhavitavya Shah (F.Y.BCom) in Table Tennis AnandPrabhuF.Y.BCom in Chess holds the 5th position at All India Inter University level and has won the Gold medal at West Zone DishaPawarT.Y.BCom in National Rugby Champion ship for women UjwalWadhwaF.Y.BSc IT in National Handball team 43 ASSOCIATIONS NM College aims at the overall development of its students. In addition to the academic excellence, students are encouraged to participate in various co-curricular & extra- curricular activities as per their inclinations & interests. The college offers a wide plethora of opportunities to its students to plan and be a part of events related to their specific interest areas through the memberships in various Associations & participation in their events. The creative facet of the students in multiple languages are given vent through the activities of English Literary Association & Speakers &Writers’ club, Marathi Sahitya Mandal, Hindi Sahitya Mandal & Gujarati Sahitya Mandal. Hobby Centre encourages students to come up with creative ideas such as photography, art forms such as rangoli& give them a chance to convert those ideas into some interesting events. Workshops such as Salsa dance workshop, Graffiti workshop also organised to train the students in different hobbies. Wildlife & Nature Club brings out the nature lover inside students through the events like nature trail, trekking, clean up drive, Gift a Sapling etc, giving them the opportunity to promote the concern for environmental protection through their events. The Psychology Club envisages to influence & develop the behavior & attitude of students in relation to the situations & challenges in their practical life. The Debate and Literary Society organizes the Classic Debate and Get Set Go-presentation skill event for encouraging the debating skills among the students. The Event Planning & Organizing skills of students find expression through The Planning Forum. The Entrepreneur inside students are encouraged & fanned into flame through ‘INTENT’ – the Business Plan Competition. Students can develop their latent talents & organize interesting events for others to participate in various areas of their interest such as Advertising, Computers, Economics through associations such as ‘Advertising & Marketing Club’, ‘The Computer Society’,&‘The Economics Association’. The Researcher inside students get vent through the Students’ Journal ‘The Visage’. With the objective of enabling our students to establish a link between “Theory and Practice” and to establish “Institute- Industry” relationship on a permanent basis, an exposure is given to students by conducting Guest Lectures of eminent personalities from the corporate world. Enterprising students are given chance to bag corporate opportunities in the noted companies such as Barclays, Tech Mahindra, TCS,ICICI, Wipro, Birla Sunlife etc., before passing out of the college through the ‘Placement Cell’. The college also aims at the social development of the students & creating awareness regarding their role as a part of the society. National Social Service NSS wing of the college introduced in 1966, aims at involving students in the mainstream society, as a part of their social responsibility. NSS students participate in various events, such as Education Projects among slum dwellers & mentally Challenged Children, celebrating National festivals, Blood Donation drive, Beach Cleaning drive, Anti – Tobacco Rally Energy Conservation drives & so on. 44 Women’s Development Cell in the college tries to raise the awareness & is involved in Gender sensitization of students & staff and in resolving issues related to sexual harassment & exploitation. The Rotaract Club of NM (RCNM) involves in various projects with social agenda trying to sensitize students to various social issues. It has to its credit, various projects such as Blood Donation Drive, Station cleaning drive, promoting eco-friendly Ganesha through exhibitions, a grain collection drive, donation of study materials to underprivileged children in orphanages. 45 Attendance ATTENDANCE FOR LEARNERS AS PER ORDINANCE 6086 OF UNIVERSITY OF MUMBAI 1. Every bonafide learner shall ordinarily be allowed to keep terms for the given semester in a program of his enrolment, only if he fulfills at least seventy five percent (75%) of the attendance taken as an average of the total number of lectures, practical’s, tutorials etc. wherein short and/or long excursions/field visits/study tours organized by the college and supervised by the teachers as envisaged in the syllabus shall be credited to his attendance for the total no of periods which are otherwise delivered on the material day/s. Further it is mandatory for every learner to have min 50% attendance for each subject & an overall average attendance has to be 75%. 2. Students participating in sports, cultural activities, N.S.S, N.C.C, Adult and Continuing Education and Extension will be permitted full credit for lectures/practical/tutorials missed by them as a result of their participation in N.C.C/N.S.S/A.C.E.E camps, Inter-collegiate, Inter-University, State, National and International tournaments/competitions and coaching camps,/training sessions organized in participation of these tournaments/competitions. This credit shall be allowed on the basis of production of certificate of participation in such authorized activity from the concerned organizers. The same shall be submitted along with a prescribed form appended as Annexure F which shall be verified by the teacher in charge and the vice principal. This form then shall be submitted to the attendance in charge in the college office on a daily basis in case of an event held by the college or within two working days of completion of events held by other colleges. 3. The Principal of the concerned College shall be the competent authority to condone the absentee of any learner further up to additional 25%, if deemed fit and on recommendation of the attendance committee of the college, wherein it is mandatory on the committee to do natural justice by giving personal hearing to every learner falling short of minimum attendance for keeping terms and recommending case by case to the competent authority having verified the genuineness and gravity of the problem that justifies the learner to remain absent, which generally shall be limited to his own sickness, sickness of his parent, death of his parent etc. supported by valid evidence, documentary or otherwise. 4. Steps by College 1. Undertaking signed by parent as well as student at the time of admission. 2. Signatures taken from students against their monthly attendance. 3. Display of monthly attendance on student notice board. 4. Monthly letters and emails sent to Parents informing of their wards attendance. 5. Periodical parents meeting addressed 46 College Rules & Regulations • Every student must obtain on admission, the Identity Card which must have his/her photograph duly attested and present it for inspection on demand. • Every student is required to maintain a minimum of 75% attendance in each term in each subject, failing which the college authorities may not allow the student to appear at the final examination, as per University norms. • Students must not loiter in the College premises while the classes are going on. • In case of illness, the Principal should be informed by the parents personally. • Students must not attend classes other than their own, without the permission of the Principal. • Smoking is strickly prohibited on the College premises. • Students are required to maintain strict discipline and orderly conduct & refrain from engaging themselves in any kind of unruly behaviour. • No Society or Association shall be formed in the College and no person invited to address a meeting without the Principal’s prior permission. • No Student shall collect any money or contribution for picnic, trip, educational visit to some place, gettogether, study-notes, charity or any other activity without prior sanction from the Principal. • No Student will be allowed to take active part in current politics. • No student shall communicate any information or write about matters dealing with the College administration to the Press. • Students are expected to take proper care of college property and help in keeping the premises clean. Damaging college property e.g. disfiguring walls, doors, fittings, or breaking furniture, misuse of A.C. etc., will be considered as a breach of discipline and the guilty will be duly punished. • Students should not leave their books, valuables and other belongings in the classroom. • The College is not responsible for lost property. However, students may make a claim for lost property at the office, if it is deposited in the College Office. • Students applying for certificates, testimonials, etc. and those requiring the Principal’s signature on any kind of document or application should first contact the College office. Students should not bring any paper directly to the Principal for his/her signature. • If, for any reason, the continuance of a student in the College, is, in the opinion of the Principal, detrimental to the best interest of the College, the Principal may ask such a student to leave the College without assigning any reason. • Students joining the College are bound by the rules and regulations of the College. 47 • Insubordination and abusive language or misconduct on the part of a student are sufficient reasons for his/her suspension or dismissal. • Students receiving Government or College Scholarships or any remission in fees, must note that the grant and continuance thereof are subject to good behaviour, regular attendance and satisfactory progress and good results at the College and Board Examinations. • Students using unfair means at Examinations will not be readmitted to the College. • It is responsibility of the student to read the notice boards regularly for important announcements made by the College office from time to time. They will not be excused or be given any concession on grounds of ignorance. • Matters not covered by the existing rules will be at the absolute discretion of the Principal. • Disciplinary action will be taken against students found carrying cellphones, pagers, walkmans, diskmans, or any other electronic devices etc. • Use of cell phones, is strictly prohibited in the college premises. Cell phones of all such students found using them on the college premises on the college premises shall be confiscated and shall be returned to them at the end of academic year. WARNING Ragging is strictly prohibited in the college premises and outside. Students indulging in ragging other students will be punished as per ‘The Maharashtra Prohibition of Ragging Act, 1999 (Mah. XXXIII of 1999) Published in Maharashtra Govt. Gazette on 15th May 1999. Such students will also be expelled from the college and F.I.R will be lodged with the police against them. Moreover, it will be mentioned in the college leaving certificate of such students that they are expelled because of their indulgence in ragging. The students found guilty of ragging earlier will not be admitted to this college. Prohibition of sale of Cigarettes or Tobacco Products Section 6 of the cigarettes and other Tobacco Products (Prohibition of Advertisement and Regulation of Trade and Commerce, Production, Supply and Distribution) Act,2003 provides that no person shall sell, offer for sale or permit sale of cigarettes or any other Tobacco Product: a) To any person who is under eighteen years of age. b) In an area within a radius of 100 yards of any educational institute. Sale of Cigarettes and other Tobacco Products in an area within a radius of 100 yards of an educational institute is strictly prohibited and is a punishable offence under Section 24 of the Act with a fine which may extend upto 200 Rupees. 48 Documents Issued by the College IDENTITY CARD A valid Identity Card is issued to every bonafide student at the time of admission. It is compulsory for every student to carry the Identity Card while being on the campus. Students will not be allowed in the Examination hall without a valid Identity Card. For University Examinations, candidates are required to produce their identity cards bearing their photographs attested by the Principal, alongwith their Hall Tickets at the examination centres. RAILWAY CONCESSION Students can avail concessional fares for rail travel by local trains between the stations nearest to the place of their residence in Mumbai and the College (Vile Parle Station). Students are requested to enter their local and permanent addresses correctly in the Admission Forms to facilitate issue of Railway concession orders. The place of permanent residence, in the application for admission, means the place where the student and/or his parents normally reside. This address will not be allowed to be changed during the academic year. Students can also avail, during vacation period, concessional fares by rail for journeys between their place of permanent residence and Mumbai during vocation. AIRLINE CONCESSION Students can also avail of concessional fares for air travel during vacation period. Students desiring to avail the Airline concession should submit the prescribed form to the college office atleast 3 days in advance, for endorsement. TRANSCRIPTS Students desirous of pursuing further studies abroad should apply for transcripts to the college office well in advance. After verification of marksheets, the college will hand over the transcrips in ten to fifteen days time. Charges for issuing the transcripts is Rs.1000/-for 5 set of copies. Every additional copy will be charged at rate of Rs. 50 per copy. BONAFIDE CERTIFICATE Students with a genuine reason can apply for a bonafide certificate to the college. Students may contact the Information Counter to apply for a Bonafide Certificate. Charge for issuing the Bonafied certificate is Rs.20/TRANSFERANCE CERTIFICATE (1) In a transfer case, no student will at any time be admitted to this College unless he/she produces a Transference Certificate from the College he/she leaves. (2) College is entitled to charge a fee of Rs.100/- for issuing the certificate. (3) As a result of a student leaving one College to join another, it will be necessary for him/her to count the attendance kept by him/her in more than one College to enable him/her to make up the necessary 49 percentage of attendance. A Transferance Certificate shall not be granted except for reasons, which appear to be sufficient and except with the written permission of the Principal of the College that the student wants to leave and the Principal of the College, which he/she intends to join. (4) Applications for Transfer Certificate shall be made by the students without unnecessary delay through the Principal of the College to which they wish to be transferred. SCHOLARSHIPS & FREESHIPS Deserving students can apply through the appropriate channel, for Scholarships and Freeships. Prescribed forms for freeship for wards of Ex-Servicemen, Freedom Fighters, Secondary School Teachers, Primary School Teachers are available. Freeship forms for SC, ST, DT, NT, OBC and SBC category students are available in the college office. Forms for scholarship by Department of District Social Welfare for SC/ST students with a minimum of Second class are also available at the college office. Requirement for Reserve Category For E.g.
