Contra Costa County Office of Education Student Programs CTE/ROP – Quality Career Training Accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges Newsletter Spring 2013 Future Engineers Study Bay Bridge Director’s Welcome Photo by Sarah Wondolowski Students in Steve Dick’s ROP Civil Engineering and Architecture class at California High gave high marks to the new Bay Bridge when they went on a field trip to study its progress. Finally, we are happy to recognize two of our many outstanding teachers who are being recognized this year as Teachers of the Year. “It’s going to help me get my foot in the door...” “It’s going to help me get my foot in the door for bigger things. It’s getting me thinking about my future and what I want to do.” Mentor Makerspace Pilot Program This year one of our ROP teachers is excited to be working on a new project called Mentor Makerspace, a program sponsored by the U.S. Department of Defense’s R&D Division. “We are one of the ten schools in the country that have been chosen to pilot the program this year,” says Andreas Kaiser, ROP Robotics Engineering Technology instructor at Pittsburg High. The program emphasizes STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) and “aims to encourage and nurture the introduction of new design tools and collaborative practices of ‘making’ to high school students,” he says. As the 2012-2013 school year begins to wind down, it gives all of us great pride to see the students whose lives have been profoundly impacted by the CTE/ROP classes they’ve taken. In this issue, we highlight some of those students, students who were nominated by their instructors as being Students of Excellence and who were selected by a panel of our industry advisors as winners. Their accomplishments remind us of the critical importance of the programs we offer. Also featured in this newsletter are some of the exciting activities planned for students by ROP teachers across the county, innovating and challenging lessons that reinforce student learning. Students from Steve Dick’s ROP Civil Engineering and Architecture class at California High went on a field trip to study the progress of the new bridge span from Oakland to San Francisco, scheduled to open Labor Day “It’s iconic,” says Romal Shah (above), who plans to study civil engineering in college. “This class is a start off for me,” he says. Janet Haun We would also like to express our deepest gratitude to Chevron Corporation and John Muir Health for their generous donations, which allow us to give each of our Students of Excellence a well-deserved scholarship. Mission To enable all learners to achieve their highest personal, academic, and career potential through state-of-the-art educational programs and services. The students were VERY excited about trying the equipment and observing in the back of the ambulance while Brian and Paula demonstrated patient care techniques that occur during a Basic Life Support (BLS) transport to a hospital. During the gurney demonstration, senior student Jocelyn Rivera was a “patient” on the gurney. Brian demonstrated to the students, with the assistance of Paula, the proper gurney mechanics and steps to properly secure a patient on a 6 Spring 2013 Dallas Rose-Gebrosky ROP Fire Science Heritage High School Instructor Les Putnam Lights, Cameras, Action! Gustavo Guardado, ROP Video Productions instructor at Heritage High, sets up a shot for ROP students Jacob Wink and Jake Olejnik mechanized gurney prior to being loaded into the ambulance for transport to a hospital. The ROP Video Productions teacher at Heritage High produced a movie that premiered at the Brenden Theatre in Concord. Gustavo Guardado wrote, directed and produced Love, Concord, a movie about coming of age. “He’s a great teacher,” says Jake Olejnik. “He makes you absorb it and learn. It’s learning from the best. You get to use the latest equipment, cameras, editing software and computers, and work in a challenging environment.” Career Technical Education Classes: Jumpstart to Success It’s always inspiring to hear from former ROP students who have graduated from the educational system and gone on to find good jobs. We’ve recently heard from ROP graduates who took the ROP Automotive Technician class in high school and went on to achieve success in their careers. Charles Mercader now operates his own business Charles Mercader is following his dream to become an entrepreneur and operates his own business called SquidCam, which makes a camera attachment for the iPhone (see www. squidc.am). Charles graduated from California High and took both ROP Auto Tech and ROP CAD from Steve Dick. These hands-on ROP classes were very helpful to his future, he says. “ROP CAD helped me jumpstart on how to design and set up simple dimensioned blue prints. ROP Auto Tech made me a better designer.” Charles then went on to major in mechanical engineering at California State University in Sacramento. Jonathan Vargas is currently working for Tesla Motors, the innovative electric car company, as a Senior Production Associate. He graduated from Clayton Valley High (now Clayton Valley Charter) and says the ROP class “absolutely” helped him with his career. “I’ve always been interested in cars,” he says, “but it was the ROP classes that opened my eyes to the possibility that it could be a career. Mr. Ouimet was a great teacher, very knowledgeable and helpful. He definitely cared about his students.” Matt Gamble, a graduate of Monte Vista High, took ROP Auto Tech from Mickey Wharton. He is now an engineer for Edlebrock Racing, “Having this program on our school campus is definitely important.” David Chapman, a senior in Bobby Sturgeon’s Advanced Auto Technology class at Antioch High, prepares for the professional ASE test currently working on a high performance cylinder head for the 426 Chrysler Hemi. In the pipeline—David Chapman, a senior in Bobby Sturgeon’s ROP Advanced Auto Technology class at Antioch High, recently passed the ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) electrical test. “The ROP auto program has laid out my future in front of me,” he says. “Having this program on our school campus is definitely important.” Future Teachers Reach Out to Students In Cindy Bonagura’s ROP Careers in Teaching class at California High, the students are engaged in a pen pal project with second graders in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The high school teens from California exchange letters and activities with the young students in Oklahoma. In one exchange, for example, the high school students sent their pen pals hand-made puzzles. The elementary school students, in turn, wrote about the activity and sent letters back to the teens. It’s a good experience on both ends of the deal. ROP student Amanda Fagenson says, “This project gives me the opportunity to talk to kids, and it’s cool to learn what second graders are doing.” Jacob Sperry adds, “I like working with kids and seeing how Students in Rachel Hallquist’s ROP Careers in Teaching class at Northgate High explore color concepts at the Exploratorium in San Francisco Amanda Fagenson, Jacob Sperry, and Megan Thomas are pen pals with 2nd graders in Oklahoma for a class project in Cindy Bonagura’s ROP Careers in Teaching class at California High they learn.” Megan Thomas agrees. “I want to be a grade school teacher,” she says. “In this project, I get to see what they’re like at that age.” As for being a teacher, she says, “It would be awesome to be part of someone’s life.” In Rachel Hallquist’s ROP Careers in Teaching class at Northgate High, the students were asked to design a lesson plan for elementary students as part of an art exhibition at the Walnut Creek Library. To prepare for these lessons, the ROP students went on a field trip to the Exploratorium in San Francisco to research the exhibits on color theory and came back better prepared for their lesson plans. CTE/ROP, Contra Costa County Office of Education 7 Architectural Design Students Create Edible Masterpieces Students in Barbara Worden’s ROP Architectural Design class at Heritage High participate in many projects throughout the year, from designing homes to building gingerbread houses. In one project, students get together in teams, research a particular architectural style, and then build a gingerbread house in that style. For example, one team built a delicious replication of Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello, an example from the 18th century neoclassical period. Another team built a colorful geodesic dome based on Buckminster Fuller’s design. Brenton Curran, a junior who is interested in studying architecture when he gets to college, says, “I love this class. It brings out the creativity in most of us. Our teacher is the most inspirational teacher I’ve ever had.” ROP Teachers of the Year Aviation Expert Inspires Students Congratulations to Cindy Egan (above) who is a Contra Costa County Teacher of the Year semi-finalist from the San Ramon Valley Unified School District. Cindy teaches ROP AP Environmental Science and ROP Introduction to Engineering at San Ramon Valley High School. Congratulations also to Jennifer Martinez (above) who is the CCCOE Teacher of the Year. Jennifer teaches the ROP Clinical Medical Assistant course at Prospects in Antioch.
