UNITED STATES OUTFITTERS P R O F E S S I O N A L LI C E N S I N G A N D G U I D E S E RV I C E 800-845-9929 New ess r d d A l m E-Mai info@ o c . o s u hunt George “Hef” Taulman, is Founder and Owner of United States Outfitters, Inc. Hef is a full- time outfitter. Originally a pharmacist, his hobby of “taking big bulls” developed into his business. Hef ’s demand for attention to detail, not only for himself but for the entire staff of guides and cooks, reflects on the overall camp experience in every single camp we host. Hef also has a unique ability to create and develop quality programs for our clients. It has always been Hef ’s belief that “it is easy to be a quality outfitter, but only if you are working in quality areas.” He started United States Outfitters in 1986 and its Professional Licensing Service in 1991. Hef has maintained our presence in the best trophy areas in the nation by offering multiple species with each individual trophy hunter’s needs in mind. Hef has made United States Outfitters and it’s clients into the success stories they are today. Andy Valerio, Licensing Expert, Operations Manager, has probably guided more successful trophy elk hunters than anyone in the nation in the past twenty-one years. Master is in charge of Field Operations for the various camps United States Outfitters uses. Many television shows and videos feature Andy’s talents. 2 Miss Jean Taulman, Owner/Office Manager, has the task of keeping ever-changing Portfolio Records up-to-date. A licensing expert herself, and an avid out-doors woman, Miss Jean’s experience over the past twenty-plus years, undoubtedly makes her as knowledgeable as anyone in the industry. Travis “Okie” Benes, Operations Manager, is well known for his New Mexico Gila National Forest expertise. He has guided on public and private lands for the past 20 years and is famous for finding the “Big Bulls”. PRIVATE RANCH HUNTS VS LICENSING HUNTS . . . HUNTS We offer 2 types of hunts: DRAW HUNTS (primarily public land) and PRIVATE LAND HUNTS. Both hunts are basically equal in harvest quality, success, camp size, guide ratio (usually 1 guide to 2 hunters), meals, and transportation during the hunt, meat and trophy care. DRAW HUNTS Draw hunts are available for elk, whitetail deer, mule deer, antelope, shiras moose, desert sheep, rocky mountain bighorn sheep, dall sheep, mountain goat, coues deer, mountain lion, oryx and ibex. These hunts are in states that we have applied to the lottery and have been lucky enough to draw a permit. These areas are of the same quality and success as on our Private Land hunts, but cost less because there are no land owner access fees or management cost. Usually these states will limit four hunters to an application; if one is drawn, the entire group draws. This way your hunting party stays together. Draw hunts are the best value and quality in the nation. These hunts are priced only for guiding and outfitting. The only disadvantage to these hunts is planning. We have no guarantee when or if you are going to draw the tag. You should let our Professional Licensing Service apply multiple tags to various states for different species to dramatically increase your chance of getting a quality hunt. Accommodations on these hunts are usually cabins or deluxe tent camps depending on the areas. Licensing hunts should be applied for even if you are booked on a Private Land hunt. We can apply you to areas with similar time frames and with equal or better quality animals. If you are lucky enough to be drawn, we will roll your deposit from the Private Land to the Draw hunt and you will go on the less expensive hunt. PRIVATE LAND HUNTS Private land hunts can be scheduled for elk, whitetail and mule deer. Private land hunts differ from draw hunts as the private land hunts are more expensive and have guaranteed tags, thus no drawing is required. When you book a Private Land Hunt, you are scheduled for a certain ranch at a certain time. These hunts are usually booked a year or more in advance with an average of 6 to 8 hunters per camp. Many of our clients book themselves on a certain ranch every year. Accommodations on these hunts are usually a lodge or cabin. The advantage to this type of hunt is that you can plan your hunt for a certain time period more than a year in advance. Gratuities One of the most commonly asked questions to our management is the amount that a hunter should tip his guide and cook. We all understand that gratuities are strictly at the hunter’s discretion, however, our guides and cooks alike work very hard to ensure your hunt is successful as well as unforgettable and appreciate your gratuity. Tips start at $500.00 for guides and $100.00 for cooks per hunter. 800-845-9929 3 WHAT USO HUNTS INCLUDE Guides Every United States Outfitters hunt is priced at one guide per two hunters. Our firearm hunts normally run a high success rate and guides that are successful early generally remain in camp, which means that most hunters end up with a one-on-one guide. However, if you would like to start out on a One-on-One basis, that can easily be arranged for an additional $1,000 for a five day hunt or $1,200 for a six day hunt. If, you have a non-hunter accompany you, and they do so in the field, you MUST add these prices to your hunt cost. We also highly recommend that you add the One-on-One for Mobility Impaired (MI) and Sheep hunts. Meals Our full-time cooks prepare three meals a day which are plentiful and full of variety. Special diets are prepared upon a hunters request, please call early. Soft drinks, and snacks are also supplied. We do not supply liquor but it can be brought by the client for personal consumption. Accommodations If you’ve booked one of our Private Ranch hunts you can expect to stay in a cabin or lodge. Our cabins are equipped with modern conveniences although some are a bit primitive. You will need to bring a bed roll. If you have drawn a tag through our Licensing Service, many of these hunts (especially early season) will be in Tent Camps. Usually each tent camp is set up with the amenities of comfortable beds, separate sleeping tents, a separate cook tent and hot showers. Most late season licensing hunts are in cabin type facilities. 4 800-845-9929 . . . Trophy Care The guides will skin and cape your trophy for you. If you decide to use your own or a different taxidermist than we recommend, your guide will cover up the points and skull plate in preparation for your return flight in accordance with all airplane regulations. Your cape will also be prepared for your flight or drive home. If you decide to use the taxidermist we recommend, we will assist you in completing the proper paperwork and arrange for your trophy to be transported to the taxidermist. Meat Care Upon harvesting your animal, it will be skinned, quartered and set to hang in cold storage. If your plans are to take the meat home with you (either through the airlines or in your vehicle) you should bring a couple of large coolers in order to transport the meat. Most camps have the facilities available for you to prepare the meat for your return trip. If you wish to use the meat processor we recommend, we will assist with the paperwork and arrange for transportation to the processor. Though we can recommend some fine local businesses, you are responsible for contracting for work done, payment, and shipping selection and costs. Meat donations are acceptable and the proper paperwork will be provided in camp. Transportation During the Hunt Because of our mild southwestern terrain the majority of our hunting is done by fourwheel drive vehicles and by foot. Very little horseback hunting is required simply because the terrain is not very demanding and relatively easy to access, especially on private land. Generally when hunting areas that are difficult to access, horses are mainly used for packing purposes. AND DON’T . . . License Fees If a client draws a licensing hunt in which United States Outfitters fronts the license fee, that fee will be invoiced accordingly and must be reimbursed to United States Outfitters within 30 days or amount will be charged to client’s credit card on file. Drawn licenses are non-transferable and non-refundable for any reason. If a client books a Private Ranch Hunt, a “Hunt Agreement” will be sent with other pertinent information to be filled out and sent back ASAP along with the appropriate fee. We will then obtain the license from the Game and Fish Department and have it in camp for you. USO will automatically be your Outfitter for AZ, NV, NM, KS, WY and UT hunts. Transportation to the Hunting Area Each hunter is responsible for their own transportation into camp by either flying or driving. If you elect to fly in, car rental is available at almost all major airports near our hunting areas. Due to our high harvest success, having a rental or personal vehicle in camp allows you to sight-see, run errands or leave early (if you so desire) once you have harvested your animal. Shuttle service is only available for certain hunt areas so you may want to inquire prior to making your travel arrangements. Gross Receipt Tax Depending on which state you are hunting, a sales tax may need to be included in the price of your hunt. If applicable, your invoice will show this item. WHAT OUR LICENSING SERVICE DOES FOR YOU . . . Professional Licensing Program More and more states are setting aside trophy areas and implementing a “limited lottery draw” as a type of management program to yield more trophy animals. This idea of limited permits is the same management concept used on United States Outfitters’ private land leases. We recognized this and are offering the best of these limited draw type hunts to our clients. The unique aspect of our program is that we not only submit the applications for you but also, in most cases, front the tag fees for you. This will allow you to apply for more applications than you would otherwise. Since 1991, United States Outfitters/ Professional Licensing Service has identified the best hunting opportunities in many of the Rocky Mountain States. We consult with you yearly about your hunting goals, and then make the selected applications. This eliminates the chances of incorrectly completed applications and missed deadlines. With constantly changing regulations and hunt dates from state to state, this program provides a valuable service. Quality tags do not go unnoticed by others. The competition for these tags is intense. This necessitates making applications to numerous states to increase your chance of drawing a quality tag. Most of our applications are in areas having limited tags, and while other hunters may be present in the area, the lack of numbers is what gives these hunts the true “quality hunting experience.” Enrolling in the service is easy. United States Outfitters’ Professional Licensing Application includes all the information required by the various state game and fish departments. A Registered Agent and Limited Power of Attorney will also be executed by you in favor of United States Outfitters so we can sign your hunt application for you. The biography portion gives us an insight of the quality you are looking for as well as any physical limitations you might have the program as long as it is not being held at the time by the state being applied to. When you are successful in drawing your permit you will be immediately notified. You simply reimburse us for the license fee with your credit card on file. United States Outfitters will outfit your hunt, have your tag in camp and provide you with any further information to make your hunt a quality experience. United States Outfitters/ Professional Licensing Service does not provide unguided hunts. In order to participate in the service and get your portfolio of applications started, you need to send us the one-time consulting fee of $120 per application, any Fee for Bonus/Preference Point, any NonRefundable License Fee, and the NonRefundable Application Fee. United States Outfitters will provide information and recommendations, based on the extensive research and expertise we have acquired through the years as one of the leaders in the outfitting industry. You may put applications on hold from year to year or ask that only preference/bonus points be obtained for that year in order to maintain preference, but not draw. If your circumstances change and you need to withdraw from the service, a simple written request will refund any monies you have in 5 FOUR REASONS WHY WE BEAT THE COMPETITION Total Service CostYear 1Year 5Year 10Year 15Year 20 USO’s $1680 $ 0 $ 0 $ 0 $ 0 Cabela’s $1155 $5,775 $11,550$17,325$23,100 Huntin’ Fool $480 $2,400$4,800$7,200$9,600 Professional Licensing Service was the original licensing service started in ’91 by USO. George and his staff realized the opportunity they could provide for their clients by simply helping them to draw the best tags available for the species sought. Our continued success has brought a lot of wannabes into existence. But why is USO’s Professional Licensing Service the best choice when looking for a high quality guided hunt? Reason 1 USO is not a booking Agent. Other recent services like Cabela’s Tags or Huntin’ Fool are “Booking Agents” who provide licensing services then refer you to only outfitters who pay them a commission in order to do so. USO is yo u r O ut f i t te r fr o m s ta r t to f i n i sh . . . Ask the “booking agents”: • Do you suggest the best outfitters or just the ones who pay a commission?” • If I have problems with the hunt, do your ‘booking agents’ stand responsible?” Our Hunts are conducted on both Public and Private Lands 6 Reason 2 USO has the experience in the units you should want tags in. USO has guided in these areas yearly since 1991, we know what they can provide, and we know when to move from areas to others because of quota changes, date changes, weapon changes, etc. Ask the “booking agents”: • Have you physically been in this unit during hunting season?” • Have you personally seen the type of bulls killed in this unit?” • Do you use your personal knowledge or just use Game and Fish’s Websites? Reason 3 USO is far less expensive than the “Booking Agents”. Knowing these quality tags are very hard to draw and likely to take many years to draw, you would have to be a complete “hunting fool” to pay the “booking agents” prices. In fact, you would have paid much more than the cost of the hunt after you finally draw the tag and now you will have to pay again. Compare using the ’05 costs of each service and applying the 4 top elk, 3 top mule deer, 4 top desert sheep, and 3 top Rocky Mountain Sheep applications. Ask the “booking agents”: • Are these costs, in fact, true?” • What service are you providing in addition, that can justify these costs?” Reason 4 Once in our service, we work for you. We don’t produce a fancy and costly magazine of information simply obtained from some Game and Fish website. This serves only to educate everyone the magazine is shared with to apply to this or that unit, making it harder to draw for the real hunter. The “screamers” that we send are to our applicants only, are to inform them of opportunities that they themselves will only benefit. Remember: The Average “High Quality Hunt Application” takes 5 or more years to draw! So . . . . Why Pay Every Year? TIPS FOR GETTING DRAWN Tips For Getting Drawn Submit All Possible Applications Nothing will replace persistence or just plain luck when it comes to drawing these types of tags, but the following tips will help. Submit numerous applications to have a decent chance of drawing one tag. Don’t think that you should apply for elk, draw it and be successful, then move on to mule deer, then sheep, etc. Apply for as many tags as you can so that your odds of drawing a tag are greater. Remember we front most tag fees. Always Use Preference/Bonus point Programs. These are programs that are put in place by some states to increase the odds of applicants that have not previously drawn. The two main types of programs are preference points and bonus point programs. A preference point is given to an applicant each time he applies and is not drawn. The tags are given to the applicants who have the most points. Colorado and Wyoming both use preference points A bonus point is given to an applicant each time he applies and is not drawn. For each bonus point an applicant has, he receives an additional application. In other words, if an applicant has 2 bonus points, he would receive 3 chances of drawing the tag he applies for. Some states like AZ, NV, and UT require an applicant to buy a General Hunting License in order to get the Bonus Point. The big advantage of a bonus point system is that you can draw at any time; you are not required to have the most points. Even on years that you do not want to hunt, we strongly recommend that you apply “point only” where it is available. All states are different but you will lose your points if you do not apply within their given time frame (1 to 4 years). Apply For Most Primitive Weapon If you hunt with different weapons, consider applying with your most primitive choice. Draw rates and success rates are usually tied to weapon choices. Rifle tags are the hardest to draw, muzzleloader next, then archery is usually the easiest to draw. Rifle hunts have the highest success rates with archery the lowest success. Muzzleloaders, especially with the new in-line muzzleloaders and use of scopes by most states, have a success rate that equals rifles on most hunts today. Professional Licensing Service will help you with the applications by weapon choice, to insure you get the best odds. B - qI am looking for a high harvest success rate on a mature bull/buck/ram with a possibility of a monster. I would accept the most difficult draw odd in order to have that high success on a mature bull/buck/ram. C - q I have hunted several times in places like Colorado, and have yet to be successful on some thing I could be proud of. All our Hunts are Trophy Hunts, so your chances of getting a trophy animal are always present no matter what your initial goal is set at. Apply to as many species and states as you are interested in, so that we have the best chance of possibly drawing one of these trophy tags. If you hunt with different weapons, consider applying with your most primitive choice. Circle the state and weapon choices, R for Rifle, M for Muzzleloader, and B for Bow. Use the special request line for instructions, such as special unit numbers to apply, etc. All Tag Fees fronted by USO are marked by an (*), underlined and different color ink. Please check closely when totaling amounts. Every November, we send out your Portfolio showing all your applications. This is the time to make changes or additions and return with payment of application fees to USO. Remember to make copies for the other hunters in your party. Make sure you fill out all 4-pages, sign, date all necessary places, and cross-reference each others’ name on the Applications. Check all requirements per state you are applying (page 10), to verify if you are required to have a Hunter Safety Card. If so, you must attach a copy to your 4-page application. Because we front most tag fees when we apply you, we require you to include a Visa/Mastercard to guarantee all non-refundable, application and tag fees when you are drawn. Add up each column for Consult Fee, Bonus/ Pref. Pt., Non-Refund. Lic./App. Fees and any Tag Fees - include this Total Amount with your 4-page Application. Success rates usually run 75 to 80 percent on trophy 5 and 6 point bulls. These hunts begin with bugling October hunts and run into late season November and December. Five Days of Hunting Most Shots Less Than 200 Yards High Quality High Success Rate Limited Permits 17 Private Ranch TROPHY CLASS MUZZLELOADER ELK HUNTS Dates: October • Hunt Costs: $6,950 Because of the quality management on our New Mexico private ranches, nearly all the bulls taken are mature animals. So, you’ve never hunted with a muzzleloader before? Don’t let that stop you from the enjoyment of hunting with a primitive weapon. With the advantage of using scopes, the new in-line guns and our ability to get you to within 100 yards, success runs as high as our rifle hunts. These private ranches are located in an area called “primitive weapon units,” so no centerfire rifle hunting is allowed. This enables United States Outfitters’ muzzleloader clients to harvest more record class bulls than any other outfitter. It may sound like we’re bragging -- and we are -- because we have the type of country and guides that deserve to be bragged about.
