(November 2015) Faculty of Economics & Administration INTRODUCTION TO THE FACULTY First established in 1959 as the Department of Economics within the Faculty of Arts, the Faculty of Economics and Administration (FEA) was founded in May 1966 to meet the nation’s growing demand for a professional workforce. Beginning with just 14 students and three academic personnel, headed by Royal Professor Ungku Aziz, FEA has evolved into a flourishing academic community of 1,049 students and 70 academic staff in 2015, among them professors and lecturers with international reputation in their respective fields. Drawing on the strength of four departments; Economics, Administrative Studies and Politics, Development Studies and Applied Statistics, FEA currently offers the Bachelor of Economics degree, and five programmes at the postgraduate level, Master of Economics, Master of Public Administration, Master of Applied Statistics, Master of Development Studies and Doctor of Philosophy. VISION To realize the Vision of the University to be an education and research centre of excellence for knowledge creation and dissemination through teaching, learning and research in the fields of economics and administration. EXCELLENT LEARNING ENVIRONMENT The Faculty has a strong group of academic staff. Our courses, curriculum and examination questions are continuously being assessed by the external assessors from renowned foreign universities. The Faculty is equipped with lecture theatres, seminar rooms and computer laboratories. PROGRAMME The Bachelor of Economics programme is designed to provide solid grounding in theory and economic knowledge and improve the critical and analytical skills of students. The core and elective courses are shaped to produce graduates with broad based as well as specialized knowledge. Since 2005, the newly introduced specialization system provides students the option to specialize in one of four (4) areas, namely; • Economics • Administrative Studies and Politics • Development Studies • Applied Statistics PROGRAMME STRUCTURE A total of 126 credits are required to complete the Bachelor of Economics programme as follows; Courses Credit a. University Courses b. Faculty Core Courses (1) Broad-Based Courses (2) Economics Core Courses (3) Quantitative Courses (4) Industrial Training (5) Graduation Exercise c. Elective Courses (Specialization) It is compulsory for students to specialize in one of four areas as below: (1) Economics (2) Administrative Studies and Politics (3) Development Studies (4) Applied Statistics 20 Total 126 13 38 16 6 6 27 A student will graduate with a specialization after he/ she has completed the programme requirements and fulfilled a minimum of 9 courses (27 credits) from a particular specialization. PROGRAMME DURATION & ACADEMIC YEAR The academic programme follows the semester system and commences in September (for Semester 1) and February (for Semester 2). The minimum period of study is 7 semesters and the maximum period of study is 11 semesters. ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS LOCAL STUDENTS Fulfill the University’s general requirements and the programme’s specific requirements in any of the following: • STPM qualification or its equivalent; or • Diploma from UiTM or Polytechnic Ministry of Higher Education Malaysia (MOHE) or any other equivalent qualification recognized by the Malaysian Government and approved by the University Senate; or • MOHE Matriculation Programme, UM Asasi Sains Programme or UTM; and • Obtained MUET Band 3 and above
