No act of kindness is ever wasted. ~ Aesop
The Challenge:
Rachel’s Rally
Rachel Joy Scott was the first person killed at Columbine High
School on April 20, 1999. Her acts of kindness and compassion
coupled with the contents of her six diaries have become the
foundation for one of the most life-changing school and community programs in America. Visit www.rachelschallenge.org for
more information.
The Enumclaw School District, Enumclaw Schools Foundation,
Franciscan Foundation and the Enumclaw Regional Healthcare
Foundation brought Rachel’s challenge to the Plateau.

Our hope was to build a paper chain of deliberate acts of kindness and compassion that will reach beyond 2 miles. Each link
represents a deliberate act of kindness and compassion.
Tonight, we will unveil the total number of acts of
kindness and compassion that have been collected by the communities of Enumclaw and Black
Diamond. Many thanks to all who are helping to
spread kindness and compassion throughout our
communities.
The Math:
1 mile = 5,280 feet = 63,360 inches = 1,760 yards
1,760 yards = 176 chains of 10 yards each
1,760 yards = 58.67 bags of 30 yards each
2 miles = 117.34 bags of 30 yards each
Four (4) Links/Sheet
1 sheet paper x 4 links = 10 inches
72 links = 180 inches = 5 yards
144 links = 10 yards
432 links = 30 yards
432 links x 58.67 bags of 30 yards = 25,358.4 links
25,358.4 links/mile x 2 miles = 50,716.8 links
