Canada, the Land of Opportunities
“Canada has one of the most successful and
prosperous economies in the world. One reason
for this good fortune is our recognition that
harnessing the power of trade and investment
represents one of the most effective ways to
drive economic growth and prosperity.”
— The Honourable Ed Fast,
Minister of International Trade
Overview
C a n a d a B u i l d i ng In d u st r y & Ec o n o m y
Canada’s Construction sector is moving at a fast pace. Spurred by economic growth, the
implementation of large-scale projects in the building and infrastructure sectors has driven growth
and development in the sector. Forecasts indicate that construction advancement encompasses
and influences every economic sector.
Canada is considered one of the world’s largest markets for residential and infrastructure development.
Canadian infrastructure and construction sectors have witnessed massive growth over the last 10 years.
The Government of Canada has provided an unprecedented amount of infrastructure investment
through 43,000 projects which includes the repair of thousands of kilometers of expressways,
highways, bridges, and local roads, the construction of new public transit, building community
facilities, and maintaining border and port assets across the country. This investment will drive
employment and procurement as a result of the execution the $53 billion 2013 New Building
Canada Plan over ten years.
Canada’s economy is currently positioned for growth to sustain a projected higher population base
over the next ten years. The Government of Canada renewed its commitment to infrastructure and
construction through the Economic Action Plan 2013. This renewed investment of $70 billion will
include the $53 billion New Building Canada Plan to build roads, bridges, subways, commuter rail,
and other public infrastructure in cooperation with provinces, territories, and municipalities over 10
years, starting in 2014-15.
In addition, the federal government will invest over $10 billion to maintain existing federal
infrastructure assets. The assets include the investment of up to $124.9 million to build a
bridge-causeway between Nuns’ Island and the Island of Montreal, as part of the New Bridge for
the St. Lawrence that will replace the Champlain bridge; $25 million over three years to advance
the Windsor-Detroit International Crossing project; $248 million over five years to strengthen
Canada’s meteorological services, which includes new investments in federal infrastructure; $19
million in 2013-14 for improvements to main National Parks highways and associated bridges;
and $54.7 million in 2013-14 to support via Rail’s operations and $58.2 million over five years to
maintain passenger rail services.
“As a first time exhibitor, Construct International
was our best way to the fast growing Canadian
market. We had exceeded our expectations and
we will definitely exhibit again in 2014.”

Bathroom, Heating & Pipe, Turkey

In 2014, Canadian construction
is actively forecasted to top $300
billion. Construction represents
6 percent of the Canadian gross
domestic product (GDP) and
employs more than 1.26 million
Canadians who engage in more
than $90 billion of work
every year.
The Ministry of Transportation
and Infrastructure will invest $920
million in infrastructure projects
for 2013/14.
$6.1 billion investment in the City
of Calgary capital projects and
programs for provincial highway
network, schools and post-secondary facilities.
“I am pleased with this first participation of
Portuguese companies in Construct International
2013. Based on the initial feedback I received
from our exhibitors, I feel that the interest of our
manufactures will increase and we may see an
expanded presence of the Portuguese exhibitors
in the future. Canada is a very strong market for
building and construction products, which we
see with great interest. Construct International
is an important platform for the Portuguese
construction industry to promote its products
and services to the Canadian market.”
— Mr. Raul Travado, Director, Portuguese Trade
Investment Agency (AICEP), Toronto, ON
T o r o nt o F a ct:

WHY T ORO N T O
Toronto is the most populous and culturally diverse city in Canada with a regional population of
over 6 million and is the commercial capital and the center of trade for Canada. In 2013, Toronto’s
population surpassed Chicago as the fourth largest city across North America. The city is home to
many national and international leading architectural, engineering and building companies. Figures
indicate the City of Toronto contributed $144 billion (11%) to Canada’s annual GDP in 2011.
Toronto is an economically strong city with the greatest potential for trade and business
development growth. Toronto based businesses export over $70 billion in goods and services
globally with retail sales of $62 billion annually. Canadian Banks have been ranked the World’s
soundest for four straight years by the World Economic Forum. Among the top 30 metropolises in
North America (populations over 2 million), Toronto was one of the least expensive places to do
business in 2012. On the Economist 2013 list of cities likely to remain highly competitive to the
year 2025, Toronto was ranked #10 out of 120 and the only Canadian city in the top 25.

– North America’s 3rd Largest Public Transit System
after New York City and Mexico City
– Leading North American municipality in New Large
Scale Development with 143 High-Rise Buildings under Construction
– Over 21 million people visit Toronto annually
The Greater Toronto Area has up to 256 cranes with about 143 commercial and residential high-rises
and skyscrapers under construction in the City of Toronto. This compares to 105 tall buildings for
New York City (#2 ranked), and 20 tall buildings in Chicago, according to Emporis, a Hamburgbased building data company. In January 2013, there were 184 high-rises under construction
which equaled the combined total of high-rise construction in New York City, Houston, Chicago,
Miami, Boston, Dallas, San Francisco, Los Angeles and Atlanta.
In addition to being the financial centre of Canada, Toronto is considered a major tourist attraction.
The city offers world-class entertainment and cultural experiences from film to live theatre. With
over $1 billion in revenues and over 25,000 jobs in feature film production, Toronto has become
the leading centre for English language media and film production. Toronto has the largest number
of theatre and performing arts organizations in Canada with one of the largest cultural centres in
North America which includes the Canadian Opera Company, National Ballet of Canada, Mirvish

“As an association handling the marketing for leading Chinese manufacturers of building and
construction materials, our groups of Chinese exhibitors were able to identify the demands of
the Canadian market through Construct International participation and for some they succeeded
in securing business deals and finding distribution channels. I think the Canadian market
is a very good market with great potential. We feel that the Chinese exhibits in the show will
definitely grow in 2014”

The Toronto Real Estate Forum will take place at the same time as Construct Canada and Construct
International. Since 1992, the Real Estate Forum has become Canada’s largest annual conference
on real estate investment and management issues. It has earned this reputation by offering high
quality speakers on very topical issues at relatively low registration fees.
Last year, the conference attracted more than 2,250 senior executives – almost two-thirds of whom
were vice presidents or above of their respective organizations. The Forum was sold out for the
seventh consecutive year.
This is our first time to participate in Construct International as a Polish company and we can
see great opportunities in this fast growing market. Construct International was a great channel
to introduce our products to the North American market and learn more about its requirement
and standards. We will develop products that will meet the demands of such potential market
and we look forward to showcasing it in Construct International 2014.”
