Grand Prize Winner Profile
4th and 5th Grade Students at Myrtle Beach Intermediate
Myrtle Beach, SC
Mentor: Principal
• Goal: To increase student exercise minutes from 120 to 480 and eat fruits and
vegetables at every snack time for one week.
• Action Plan: Advertised and interviewed for leadership roles to become part of the
Healthy Challenge Team. Used EB 101 lessons to understand energy balance and
assess school needs. Surveyed students to determine what goals will be; brainstormed
strategies to help meet the goals. Wrote letters to local businesses to get fruit and
vegetable donations. Developed a “physical activity homework menu” for students to
pick from. Created a video for the students and parents to be posted on the school web
page explaining the program. Collected and shared data with school community.
Entirely student led.
• Long-Term: Make the Healthy Challenge Team permanent with the goal of doing this or
a similar challenge at least once per quarter and finding additional ways to get families
and the school community involved.
