Tracy Hunt Tracy Hunt has been a family member at Greenwood Athletic Club since 1996 with her husband, Michael, and her 3 children, Andrew (18), Jody (14) and Nancy (12). Michael is an ER doc at Swedish and in his “free time” lifts weights, does cardio and plays basketball. All three kids use the club to swim and train for their school activities. To know Tracy is to love her: a kind, gentle soul who always has a smile on her face (even when being tortured by Sergeant Rob Blue and Sergeant Barbara Lubbers in Booty Camp!). Tracy is a fan of group exercise and in her first year of membership at the club, 10 years ago, she began taking Sherri WeaverFast’s Step class and Barbara’s Power Hour. She still enjoys those classes as well as Energy Zone™ and recently hopped on a Spinning™ bike to give Cycle Zone™ a try. Tracy also trains with Rob in the weight room and with Sherri in the Pilates studio with her buddy, Sharon Colon. In fact, you’ll often see Tracy and Sharon together throughout the club. Tracy is now a stay-at-home mom, but graduated with a degree in teaching and taught elementary school for eight years before she married. She still enjoys time in the classroom, teaching Sunday school at her church. Tracy is a treasure and we’re grateful to have her as a member of Greenwood Athletic Club. 3 P-Note 20 Years…and Going Strong! Happy Holidays to you and your family! I hope you’ve had a healthy 2006 and are ready to join Greenwood Athletic and Tennis Club staff and fellow members in a year-long celebration of the club’s 20 year anniversary -- July 1, 2007! Greenwood Athletic and Tennis Club has made an impact on the lives of over 47,000 people. Thousands of miles have been run, multiple “fourteeners” have been climbed, pounds have been shed and tons have been lifted! Lives have been changed in the community located at 5801 S. Quebec -- a community that you’ve helped to create! GAC charter members Steve and Kathy McConahey have been a part of our community since the club preopening. With membership #7, they are the longest active members, and as our anniversary slogan says…still going strong! Steve and Kathy joined as family members with their children, Ben and Heather, on October 8, 1986 for a $79 initiation fee. They utilized the basketball court and other areas of the club where they could participate in fitness activities with their kids. Today, Steve and Kathy use the club even more than in earlier years. Steve is a cyclist and enjoys spinning at the club with Jaime Bruce and lifting weights. Steve is currently rehabilitating from back surgery, and plans to begin pilates to aid in his recovery. Kathy is a marathon runner and enjoys spinning, too. She balances her cardiovascular activities with yoga and pilates. Steve is involved in local business development and met with John W. Madden, Jr. years ago, when the club was just an idea. Steve said, “It has been interesting to see the club go from just an idea to what it is today. It has grown and improved, yet still has a personal touch.” Kathy mentioned, “The staff is friendly and Greenwood is just a pleasant place to be.” Steve added, “You get to know the staff and they become a part of your life.” For 20 years Steve and Kathy have walked through the doors at GAC and have witnessed many changes. Kathy loves the addition of Ethereal Day Spa and regularly receives massages. When they first joined GAC, their children were on a local swim team. They wanted to bring the swim team to GAC, but the timing wasn’t right and the club wasn’t equipped to handle a 150-member swim team. “Now you have a swim team and have the new pools to handle that many swimmers and more. GAC continues to upgrade physically, but has been able to keep its personality,” said Steve. As I finished my conversation with Steve and Kathy, I was left with a sense of pride in the experience that our staff, present and past, has created for our members. GAC team member Karen Zareck has been a vital part of the club for all of these 20 years, first as a Membership Representative and then as a Personal Trainer. Karen joined the team at GAC on May 26, 1987 and has been a valuable part of the members’ experience each and every year. Present at the Creation…Karen Zareck reminisces… “I’ve seen it all evolve and become more exciting in the 20 years since GAC rose out of the surrounding ranchland. In May, 1987, when I was first hired, the club was still under construction. The few employees were in temporary offices across Quebec Street. I came aboard to be a trainer, but until the club was completed, I sold memberships. Each day we would don hard-hats for tours of the construction site to view the progress. In our temporary offices there was a huge model of the club. I remember being so confused about how the locker rooms would be laid out, and how they would work! The club opened July 1, 1987, two months early with 2,200 charter members. We were pretty 4 proud of the marketing job four of us accomplished in only a few months. One of the funniest things that ever happened to me at GAC occurred when I was taking a prospective member on a tour. I described the locker rooms and suggested that he go into the men’s locker room to take a look at the space including the sauna and whirlpool. I said I’d wait for him in the area by the stairway. He went in and never came out! I couldn’t figure out where he had gone. I assumed he must have loved it and moved in permanently. He may still be in there, for all I know! I still see many of GAC’s charter members year in and year out…they are consistent users of the club, coming to work out four or five days a week. The charter members are typically morning people and from the start, they’ve been committed to healthy lifestyles. It’s so rewarding and exciting to have so many friends, and to see familiar faces every day at GAC. This is really a home-away-from-home for so many of us. Arnold Pohs, for example, was a charter member who signed up soon after he had a heart attack in 1987….he was determined to become healthier. Rob Corn joined back then and still comes here every day. Joanne Austin, Jennifer Gore, Marion Nutt and Carol Levine are all charter members who continue to frequent GAC. Peggy Goldman is a client I’ve done personal training with on and off for many years. Several times, Peggy has moved from Denver to other cities with her family. She’s had twins, she’s recovered from various surgeries, and so on…we’ve been apart at various times, but she always comes back and we work together again. A lot of my training clients have been with me for five to ten years or more. We’re all family! I’ve also seen many physical changes to the club over the years and it’s been fun and interesting to watch. Originally we had numerous racquetball courts, some of which have evolved into the spinning studio, pilates studio and studio 3. Our upstairs cardio area was originally a full-service restaurant. Studio 1 looked out onto a grassy field that was completely open…subsequently the club expanded and filled that space. Building the swimming pool took two years; we originally had a sand volleyball court where the pool would eventually be built. One summer, we even had an outdoor weight room. We’ve really listened to members over the years about what they wanted….adding boot camps, yoga and group exercise classes. We now have over 115 classes a week! These are really strong components of GAC's recipe for success, and we’re proud of it.” It’s also devoted team members like Karen that are such a vital part of GAC’s success. Some words of wisdom from Karen that have helped her lead many GAC members to personal success in their exercise goals are as follows: “Be consistent! You don’t have to do daily heavy workouts. You don’t always have to be doing the latest and greatest aerobics or machines or equipment…you just need to be here! Be comfortable, find activities that are fun, but show up! Getting into the habit of being here is the most important part.” Steve and Kathy McConahey are a living example of a commitment to “be here.” They have continued to “show up” for 20 years…a tremendous accomplishment. Thank you, Steve and Kathy, for choosing Greenwood Athletic and Tennis Club 20 years ago, but most importantly…thank you for staying! We are proud to have you as members and you will forever be known as lucky #7! Together, GAC members and team members have been able to create a community, a family, a home-away-from-home that we can all be proud of. I started coming to the club the year it was built, when I was just eleven years old. My memories of those days are fond. I was so excited to hear that the club was coming, because back then Greenwood Village was just a field! Once the club opened, I would go every day after school to work out, of course under the supervision of my parents! This routine lasted for me throughout middle and high school. I then went to college at CU Boulder and joined a club there -- Rally Sport. As much as I enjoyed going to that gym, it did not compare to GAC. So, on the weekends, I would drive home to get my GAC fix. After college, I figured it was time to find a “real job” that would hopefully lead to a career. At the time, Greenwood had decided to build a Pilates studio and was opening in the summer of 1997. I signed up for a lesson and fell in love. Immediately, I knew that Pilates was what I wanted to do. I quit my other two jobs, working retail and as a chef, and signed up to be trained as a Pilates Instructor. After many hours of study, practice and observation, I was hired and teaching at Greenwood Athletic Club. The studio at the time started off with around 800 square feet of space, only a handful of instructors, four reformers, one cadillac, one chair, and one latter barrel. After years of seeing clients from 7:00am until 7:00pm, I was given the opportunity to be the Coordinator of the Pilates Studio at Greenwood Athletic Club. Of course, I signed on and was thrilled to get the experience of not only teaching Pilates, but learning how to run a studio. Greenwood is not only special to me because this is where my mother and father and my brother and his family work out, but it is also where I met my husband, Joe Talbert, GAC Personal Trainer and co-creator of Power Fitness. Peggy Mazza Bloom instructing one of our members on the cadillac/trap table. Now, the Pilates studio has expanded, and we are one of the most successful Pilates studios in the country. We have nine fabulous Pilates Instructors on staff and more than twice as much equipment as we did when we first opened. The growth of Pilates continues to amaze me. My parents are still coming to spin class at 6:00am, Power Fitness at 7:00am and working out in the weight room and Pilates studio. I now have two little girls that love to go to the Kids’ Club, and I am able to continue my passion of teaching Pilates. I am fortunate to live the life that I am living now and can only hope to pass on my enthusiasm for the club to my children. We know a great deal more about how the body works when forces are applied to it and to what degree exercise is helpful or harmful. We have created cardiovascular machines that lessen the impact when running and have created bikes that are more ergonomically designed. We have more research than ever showing that exercising with a variety of different tools not only helps physical appearance but also assists in maintaining balance and coordination. With all of the “new” knowledge and experience in our industry, there are a few fitness facts that are universal and still true today: 1. “You are what you eat.” This fact has been around much longer than 20 years and cannot be disputed. The more we look at new supplements and dietary aids, the more it comes back to one simple rule: eat a well-balanced diet of carbohydrates, proteins, and fats, considering nutritional value, in order to stay healthy. 2. “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” The more we see illness and diseases occurring in our society, the more we see that they are, to a major degree, preventable. Heart disease, type 2 diabetes and obesity are all diseases to which lifestyle is the biggest contributing factor. By changing the way people look at exercising and eating healthy, we can prevent a great deal of the disease our society currently faces. 3. “It’s never late for an old dog to learn new tricks.” What has this got to do with exercise? Even as we age we should challenge ourselves physically and mentally. Research has proven over the last 20 years that we can make gains in strength, balance and flexibility into our 70s! We should never be afraid to try new forms of exercise (except for where acute injuries are concerned) that may benefit us. In conclusion, the past 20 years of fitness technology, research and training methods have proven that we should stick to some basic fundamentals to be healthy and fit: Eat properly. There are a lot of amazing youth programs coming to Greenwood Athletic Club this season - some new and some renewed. We have a brand new Hip Hop class, a new Okinawan Karate class for ages 5-10 years and JUNIOR BOOT CAMP is back! It is going to be a season for the youth of GAC to have fun and fitness in their lives. Don’t forget to register before the start date of all youth programs to save $20. Head Age Group Coach Evan Welting joins us from Atlanta, Georgia where he was Assistant Age Group Coach for Swim Atlanta. He was a Masters Coach as well as an accomplished Masters swimmer for Emory University. Evan was also the Head Coach for the Rivershyre Sharks Summer League Team in Atlanta. Scott and Evan are working together professionally for the first time, although they were collegiate teammates swimming for Western Kentucky University. Sounds like the beginning of a grade school term paper! I have been at this club (off and on) for almost 18 years. I remember Marsha Macro offering me a Sunday Hi/Lo class in 1989. The first day I showed up, there were 20 or so people in that room and I was so nervous I thought I'd be ill. When I let go of the class, I said good-bye to about 50 members. I had accepted my first "Aerobic Coordinator" position at the IAC in Aurora and the conflict of interest forced me to give up this wonderful class. Two years later, I received a call from Scott Nelsen asking me to apply for that same position at Greenwood. I knew the move would be a huge step up for me (who wouldn't want to work at this club??), so I accepted. In 1994 my father was diagnosed with cancer. I remember standing in the closet of Studio 1, crying, and Mary K. Egan stepping in there with me to say..."You have to get help. You can't do this alone anymore." I made the difficult decision to leave my job, call hospice and care for my father full-time…a decision I never regretted. My bond with the members of GAC has never let me leave this remarkable club. I've been teaching group exercise here ever since. Now, 12 years later, here I am…Group Exercise Director once again. Group Exercise is my love, first and foremost. I can't imagine not being a part of your day. Many of you feel that we touch your lives, but you have no idea how much you touch ours. As an instructor I have shared in your joy and pain, happiness and grief. I've seen you grow fitter, stronger, more agile, less stressed. What a gift I have been given to be so close to so many. As a Director, I am blessed to come into contact with even more people than those who attend my classes. I interact with you daily, can often solve a problem, be a shoulder when needed and serve you in a variety of ways. A $40.00 value. 13 Tennis Ron Steege, Director of Tennis Elevated Wrap-Around Finish Please contact Ron for any Tennis inquiries at x394 rons@greenwoodathleticclub.com IN THE MODERN GAME, THERE’S MORE THAN ONE WAY By Ron Steege Learning this great game of ours is so much more fun today than in the past, but it can also be a bit confusing with the variety of footwork and swing patterns that have evolved over the years. If you haven’t jumped on the modern tennis bandwagon, it’s not too late. Players from age 4 to 84 can enjoy the benefits of techniques used by today’s pros and hit shots with more pace, spin and variety. The best part is you’ll use less effort and the possibility of injury is greatly reduced. Space in this article does not allow us to take an in-depth look into all of the various footwork and swing patterns; however, our tennis professionals at Greenwood are well-versed in modern techniques, and any of them would be able to convey even more information in a private session. As far as footwork goes, the primary difference is that with the more traditional groundstroke, a neutral or closed stance is used with the player stepping forward towards the net. With a modern groundstroke an open stance is used, especially when moving laterally. A neutral stance is still used with a modern groundstroke, but usually only when moving forward. Inverted Wrap-Around Finish In the modern game, there are a host of swing paths and followthroughs for the topspin forehand, depending on the player’s grip and the situation at hand, whereas in the traditional game there is one primary finish. As you can see in the three photos, there are two primary follow-throughs: wrap-around and vertical. Wrap-around: Used for most drives, arc and dip drives from high impact points, loops, angles and topspin lobs. The height of the finish can vary, depending on the impact point and the shape of the shot being executed. Vertical finish: Used sometimes when hitting a topspin lob or to hit extra topspin against a ball that has been received with a lot of pace or when the player has been caught a little too close to the ball or late. Here the racquet moves sharply upward, finishing above the head and level over the right shoulder for the right-handed player. The bottom line is that playing better tennis is more fun and learning to hit the same shots you see the pros hitting on TV is extremely motivating. My recommendation is to get on the modern tennis bandwagon today and soon you’ll be hitting shots and covering the court like you never imagined! Although she has lived in Colorado for over 25 years, she is still a Red Sox fan, having been raised in Massachusetts. During her tenure with Greenwood Athletic Club, she has “worn many hats.” She was an Administrative Assistant for many years, created the GAC newsletter, managed the group exercise program and did whatever it took to get the job done. After being away from GAC for a couple years, she returned in 2003 as a Certified Pilates Instructor, where she continues to work today. SEPTEMBER 2006 TEAM MEMBER OF THE MONTH Nancy Tomb Youth Programs Manager/ Aquatic Instructor Nancy was born (along with her twin brother Charlie) in St. Paul, Minnesota, but has lived in Colorado for the past 21 years. Nancy began employment at GAC in September of 2001 as a swim lesson instructor and lifeguard and was the Head Lifeguard the past two summers. Much of the past five years have included seasonal employment at GAC, as she was attending college at the University of San Diego. She recently graduated from college and is now working as a Teacher’s Assistant at Denver Academy. In September of 2006, she was selected as the Youth Programs Manager at GAC. She loves working with kids! When not dealing with kids, she enjoys teaching and taking yoga classes and spending time with family and friends, especially going to the movies. Nancy identifies GAC member, Patty White, as an inspiration for her contagious positive attitude. OCTOBER 2006 TEAM MEMBER OF THE MONTH Tracy Goetz Kids’ Club Manager Tracy has worked in Kids’ Club as a Manager-onDuty since February 2003. In August of 2006, she was promoted to interim Manager of Kids’ Club, managing all aspects of the staff, facility and administration. Tracy was born in Yuma, Arizona, but has lived in Colorado for 10 years. She and her husband Mark have two very busy boys, Hayden (4) and Jake (almost 2). Tracy grew up with three brothers and two sisters, so she loves family time. In the summer time, she loves playing softball. She played 3rd base in three leagues last summer and two of her teams won their leagues. The answer is simply, “no!” Fad diets are not new. In fact, they have been around for hundreds of years and yet, our nation continues to gain weight. In honor of the Greenwood Athletic Club’s 20th anniversary, let’s revisit some dieting trends of the past 20 years… In the 1980s the Atkins Diet made its second appearance after it first reared its ugly head in the 1970s. The Beverly Hills diet was the latest craze in the mid-80s with the premise that eating only fruit for the first ten days will encourage weight loss. Also in the 80s a scientist by the name of Dr. David Jenkins developed an anti-diabetes system known as the Glycemic Index. This index was developed to identify the effects that different foods have on the blood sugar levels of people suffering from diabetes. In the 1990s Dr. Barry Sears created the Zone Diet, which is still popular today. This diet suggests that eating 40% of your daily calories from carbohydrate, 30% from protein, and 30% from fat will not only balance hormone levels but also promote weight loss. In the beginning of the new millennium, the South Beach Diet appeared on the book shelves. Often compared to the Atkins plan due to its low intake of carbohydrate, this diet was made popular with the promise of a weight loss “jump start.” Despite the efforts of these diet plans, a few scary statistics have arisen from the department of Health and Human Services in recent years. In the 1990s, a shocking 40% of nine and ten year old children were on a diet. On any given day, over half the women in the United States are on a diet. Americans spend over 40 billion dollars a year on dieting and dieting products. Finally, over 65% of our country is currently overweight. So what is “The Answer?” Unfortunately, there is no quick fix or magic diet -- just simply hard work and discipline. In fact, exercising daily and eating a balanced diet that includes plenty of fiber from fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, a moderate amount of healthy fats, and enough lean protein to support the repair and rebuilding of muscle is the only proven method for long-term weight loss.
