The Most Holy Body and Blood of Jesus  Sunday, June 2, 2013
SAINT LUKE CATHOLIC CHURCH
SUNDAY, JUNE 2, 2013
Dear Friends,
The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ
“I received from the Lord what I handed on to you, namely, that the Lord Jesus on the night in which he was betrayed took bread, and after he had given thanks, broke it and said, “This is my body, which is for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” In the same way, after the supper, he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do
this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.” Every time, then, you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim
the death of the Lord until he comes” (1 Cor. 11: 23 – 26)!
The Eucharist and Jesus at the Last Supper
The word, Eucharist, appears in this passage from Bible. It can be translated as “having expressed thanks,” or
“to be thankful.” St. Paul, himself, founded this community in 51 A.D. Scholars believe that St. Paul wrote this letter from
Ephesus in the year, 56 A.D. when he realized that the Christian community was fragmenting behind certain individuals.
St. Paul wanted the Christians of Corinth to be united. The Eucharist, established by Christ, is a Sacrament of Unity
which commemorates the saving death and resurrection of the Lord.
The Abuse at Corinth
St. Paul wrote some harsh words in his letter. The Christians were “doing more harm than good” (1 Cor. 11: 17).
Their primary fault was that they have allowed divisions to form in the community. When they meet in various houses,
some eat their own suppers, while others go hungry. “One goes hungry and another gets drunk” (1 Cor. 11: 21). He asks
them if they are bothered by this poor behavior, and then proceeds to remind them that Jesus himself instituted the Eucharist, and that they are not to “show contempt for the church of God” (1 Cor. 11: 22).
Words of Love
St. Paul encourages the Christians to “wait for one another” (1 Cor. 11: 33) when they come together. Preserve
the bond of unity which has the Spirit as its source. “As a body is one though it has many parts, and all the parts of the
body, though many, is one body, so also Christ. In the one Spirit we were all baptized into one body” (1 Cor. 12: 12 –
13). Then he speaks about the way of love.
Love is a defining feature of a Christian community. “The end of all things is at hand. Let your love for one another be intense, because love covers a multitude of sins” (1 Peter 4: 7-8). “So faith, hope and love remain, these three,
but the greatest of these is love” (1 Cor. 13: 13).

Building Peace Update …
HAPPY 1st ANNIVERSARY
BUILDING PEACE ON EARTH CAPITAL
CAMPAIGN celebrated an important benchmark on
May 31. This date marked the completion of the first year
of our campaign -- and what a year!
We want to praise God for His blessings and thank the
Parish for sharing your gifts so generously. In just 12
months of the 36 month campaign, the Parish has contributed over $425,000 (48%) of the original goal of
$875,000. But of even greater significance, 645 Families
have officially pledged while an additional 284 Families
have made contributions –which comes to 67% of the
Parish participating. This is in
addition to the $9,000 in loose
cash. Every gift is appreciated
and acknowledged!
Thank you all so much for your cards, phone calls
and well-wishes during Bruce's illness. We especially appreciate your prayers and hope that you will
continue to lift him up in prayer as he continues to
recuperate.
Sincerely,
Annette Warner
Fr. Paul has emphasized that
the Participation Rate is the
key, not the quantity of the gifts.
The Spirit of St. Luke is most
supportive as the Parish begins
the Second Year in June, it will
be important to continue the
enthusiasm and joy of giving
what you can. Fr. Paul has indicated that the Building and
Planning Committee is working on the Site Plan as well
as other activities to prepare the Parish for the transition
to the new property. All Parishioners will be asked to provide their feedback to this plan in the coming months so
that the final results will truly reflect St. Luke’s Spirit.
Congratulations to each of you for a fantastic First Year
and now let’s make our Second Year even better.
