THE FAMILIAR STORY
I recall as a child climbing up on my grandfather’s lap to have him read me a story. Once he
finished, I’d ask him to read it to me again, and again, and again. For a couple of years, Gramps
read me that story when I went to visit. He never tried to skip a page for I knew it so well. He
must have tired of reading it but he kept doing it with sound effects until I brought him another
one. He asked about the change – both were about the misadventures of a pony – but then
read the new one over and over again.
This week we have heard again the story of Jesus’ death and resurrection, one we have read,
heard and watched probably at least once every year of our life. We are so familiar with it, we
may even switch off and think I know this story I don’t really need to listen to it again.
The beauty of well-known and read stories is that they are like good friends who can bring
comfort, challenge and peace. The events of Holy Week and Easter are such a story. It is a
best friend who gives us hope and guidance for the future, reassurance in the face of difficulties
and life threatening situations, and the knowledge that we are never alone even when everyone
seems to have left us.
Christ has died. Christ is buried. Christ is risen!
These are the key points of this beautiful story that one should never tire of hearing. Listen
again to Jesus’ Easter Story as if it is the first time you have encountered it. Let it renew you
and shine the light of love all around so that you get so excited you can’t help but tell it over
again to others.
