Welcome To October
The witches fly across the sky. The owls go, “Who? Who? Who?” The black cats yowl and
green ghosts howl, “Scary Halloween to you!” by Nina Willis Walter. Enjoy the change of
season and of course have a little candy! Trick or treat, smell my feet, and give me
something good to eat! Happy Halloween.
Halloween Crafts
In the spirit of Halloween and bringing your family together, we came up with a few
crafty and fun activities to do with your family. This is an easy and simple art
project that kids can make for Halloween. Materials needed for this project: white
washable paint, Q-tips, glue, and black paper. Paint your child’s hand and part of
their arm with the white paint then have them stamp down on the black paper. It
works best if you press down on their arm and hand to get a good print. Have
them cut up random size Q-tips and glue them down to make the bones.
“Listen! The wind is rising,
and the air is wild with
leaves. We have had our
summer evenings, now for
October eves.”
~Humbert Wolfe
This is a quick and simple Halloween treat for your family. The best part is you can
make these as easy or hard as you want. You can make your own dough or buy it;
make your own frosting or tint some store bought. Ingredients needed for treat: 1
package of refrigerated chocolate chip cookie dough or your favorite cookie
recipe, ½ cup prepared vanilla frosting, tinted red, 1 ¾ cups mini marshmallows,
and 48 slivered almonds. Prepare cookies as directed on package or according to
your favorite recipe. Once cooled, cut each cookie in half for a total of 48 halves.
Frost the bottoms of all cookie halves with frosting and place 6 marshmallow teeth
around curved perimeter of 24 halves. For additional support, an additional
marshmallow can be placed behind the teeth. Top with remaining 24 halves. Insert
two almond slivers in between teeth for fangs. If fangs do not adhere, dip tips into
frosting. Have fun and enjoy your treat!

We have completely moved both administration buildings and are in our new
building at 217 E. Emmitt Avenue. Everyone loves the new building. Our annual
audit is rescheduled for November 3rd so we are ready for it. We have two
birthdays this month, Shawna Bush celebrates her birthday on October 31st and
Michelle Blacks’ is October 6th. She will be reaching a major mile stone and turns
the big 50. Michelle thought it would really be depressing but she has chosen to
take a different outlook on it. She is blessed to be 50 and alive. Rick Tennant has
been with our agency six months on October 16, 2014. The maintenance guys
have really been busy taking care of all our needs and please remember they start
their new schedule this month. JJ will also be back on track so he will be visiting
the sites.

GHH is rocking recovery! We have celebrated thirteen ladies graduating in the past
month. I want to express my appreciation to all the GHH staff for helping these ladies
reach their goals and in facilitating how to live a sober life.

We have participated in several sober venues including a fall retreat to Pike Lake
(Kum ba ya), the Zombie walk in Waverly, and the Jackson community balloon
release. Both houses were presented with 1st place trophies at the Zombie walk and
one client was offered employment for her make-up artistry. We, also, have newly
designed hoodies created by two groups of clients.
This month's highlighted employee is ALL of them. Teamwork is everything here at
GHH and I am fortunate to be a part of the team. So, kudos to Brenda J., Amy,
Marcella, Teresa, Talley, Brenda K., Kip, Tracy, Marian, Kellie, Tina, Liz W., Liz S.,

~Asher Roth
Hello from the Chillicothe Outpatient team.
What’s going on; well, the group schedule has been adjusted to accommodate
Kip’s new schedule but it looks like everyone will adjust ok. Bill Rice in addition to
clinical supervision has begun providing some short trainings for the outpatient staff
and Kari Molebash who has been providing Mental Health services three days a week
at this location will now be here two days a week and one day at another agency
location. Jess moved to a larger office and looks very comfortable there. Heather
came by for a visit from her new job at the probation department (intensive Probation
for common pleas) she states she likes the job and is doing well, we wish her good
luck.
The seasons are changing and so will many things at this site and in all of our daily
lives; lets remember that acceptance is the answer to many of the days concerns, that
whenever I find myself disturbed it is because I find some person, place, thing, or
situation – some fact of my life – unacceptable to me, and I can find no serenity until I
accept that person, place, thing, or situation as being exactly the way it is supposed to
be at this moment (Dr. Paul Ollinger – Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous)

Employee News
We asked a few employees to tell us more about themselves, and this is what they
shared:
Brenda Jones
Brenda Jones
Brenda grew up in Columbus, Ohio and is a graduate of Gahanna Lincoln High
School. Soon after graduation, she stayed in the area an entered the job force. Brenda
started raising her family in her early thirties. She is a graduate from Life Christian
University with an Associates in Theology, Abuse Counselor through International
Institute for Abuse Counseling, and a Licensed Minister through Life Christian
University. In January of 2010, Brenda joined the Recovery Council and currently she
is a counselor for the GHH. When asked what the best thing about working for the
Recovery Council has been her response was “the client’s and staff.” Brenda feels like
she has purpose and this is where she should be in her career.
Brenda enjoys spending time with her family. She is currently married to a wonderful
man going on three years. She said they blended together two only children, daughters
who are both 17 years of age. They do everything right after the other, driver’s license,
now working on graduation of high school, and finding the right college. She said it is
never a dull moment. One interesting fact about Brenda that most people are unaware
of is she used to be a Ballroom Dance Instructor. Brenda’s best vacation was to Lake
Michigan with her sister and family. If Brenda could go anywhere in the whole world
she would travel on an African Safari, go to Alaska, and Israel all on the same vacation
with her best friend Lori Ratliff, that is if she could leave GHH. She would settle for her
husband if Lori could not get away. In her spare time, Brenda enjoys reading, studying,
exercising, watching marriage videos, and reading marriage books with her husband.
Karen Casebolt
Karen Casebolt
Karen grew up in the Chillicothe area and is a graduate of Weslton High School.
Soon after graduation, she attended Shawnee State University. Karen would love to go
back and finish her degree. Soon after attending college, Karen married and started a
family. She at that time started her own catering business and after her divorce Karen
worked at Hillview retirement center for seven years. In July of 2012, Karen joined the
Recovery Council team. When asked what the best thing about working for the
Recovery Council has been her response was “being able to walk this journey with
these ladies and seeing their transformation back into their communities.” She feels
this is the place she should be and Karen loves her job.
Karen enjoys spending time with her family. She is currently married to her best friend
Cliff Casebolt. Karen has two boys Andrew 26 and Aaron 24, four dogs, and two cats.
Her father Dane has moved in with her family after his stroke in April. She said her
house if full, but love radiates though out her home. One interesting fact about Karen
that most people are unaware of is her love for children. Cliff and Karen will start foster
parenting classes and are excited to share their love with the foster children. Karen’s
best vacation was to Gettysburg and Washington, DC. Her father is a big civil war buff
and he took her family all around each site and told them all about the different battles.
When asked where she would like to travel in the world her response was “I would
travel the world, maybe Paris and the Grand Canyon with my husband and two boys.”
In her spare time, Karen enjoys cooking, reading, and helping out at her church.
Board Member Spotlight
The board member spotlight has become a regular piece in the monthly newsletter
spotlighting our amazing board members. We will be expanding this section to include
people in our community and other agencies that help with the recovery process. Watch for
the next interview in the up coming newsletters.

Miss Carly and her laptop!
The Recovery Council would like to congratulate the following employees for advancing in their career and years of service: Rick
Tennant, Amber Thornsberry, Sonja Hines, Jan Hartlaub, Dustin Shepherd, Mista Sloas, Willa Bowman, and Brenda King. We
would like to welcome to The Recovery Council new hires for the month: Phil Gates and Brenda Scowden.
Employee Carly Price successfully parked her car on her laptop. She was leaving from New Beginnings back to the office when
she was unable to move in her car. She thought well that’s weird. Did she get out of the car to check why she was unable to
move? No, she put it in four wheel drive and ran over...that’s right her work laptop! No worries, no one was injured in this event
and JJ was able to save the laptop and replace the screen.

P.S. Remember there are always exciting things going on in local recovery. Group anniversaries, which usually include food, fellowship, and a meeting,
dances, and other events at the club house (Lighthouse Club at 291 S. Paint Street in Chillicothe, Ohio). Don’t short change your recovery, get involved,
take a course of rigorous action; go to meetings, get a home group, get a sponsor, read the Big book, the 12 and 12, the Reflections Meditations book, pray
to a god of your understanding, and look for ways to help out. We could increase this list ad infinitum.
Prevention
Elizabeth Courtright, Prevention Provider and Carly Price, Prevention Specialist
The Prevention team is part way through the Life Skills Training for the freshman class at
Waverly High School. The curriculum presented to the students is Life Skills Training which is
an evidence based prevention intervention for students anywhere from 1st-10th grades. We
will be providing services for high school students the first half of the year and broaden to the
junior high in the winter.
October is drug awareness month. This year our team will be working with the PAWS
organization at Waverly High School. PAWS stands for People Assisting Waverly Students
and the number one goal is to provide fun, drug free activities, and mentoring programs for
the students. We will be assisting the PAWS students during Red Ribbon Week! On October
24, 2014 Waverly City Schools will participate in an assembly where they will here from four
or five former addicts. The assembly will jump start Red Ribbon Week for our students and
on October 28, 2014, we will be holding a Prevention Fair at Waverly High School. Local
businesses will be represented during the fair in the gymnasium. Students will be able to
learn about the organizations and how the companies relate to prevention. Great things are
happening with our prevention team! Stay tuned to see our growth and progress with the
students of Pike County.

Pam Johnson, Clinical Supervisor
In the short period of time that Angela McDowell was in the compliance position,
she made tremendous strides in getting our Performance Improvement program
organized and active. We owe her a big ‘thank you!’ We wish her the best on her
new adventure.
This does mean, however, that we are once again in a transition phase. Even
though we cancelled our PI meeting this month (October), don’t stop your PI
activities! Keep doing your drills, keep completing record reviews, don’t stop
following the health and safety guidelines, and keep collecting outcome data. We
will resume meetings in November when we will be joined by our new compliance
person.
