FARM POND FISHING
GOOD THINGS COME IN SMALL
PACKAGES (PART 1 OF 2)
Some things in life are counterintuitive. When it
comes to fishing, you might expect the biggest fish
to always come from “big waters”. If you search the
PA Fish & Boat Commission’s state records and its
annual angler award program, you would see some
very familiar large waterways, like Lake Erie and the
Allegheny River, prominently mentioned. However,
if you read the PF&BC’s rules closely, you will notice
that fish taken from farm ponds do not qualify. (This
has to do with the availability of public access to the
body of water.) Believe it or not, there are probably
several largemouth bass currently swimming in farm
ponds across Pennsylvania that would give the present state record of 11 pounds, 3 ounces competition.
While you may not be able to enter fish you catch
from a farm pond in any PF&BC record or award
program, you can still experience excellent fishing
and the possibility of catching your personal best
fish in a pond close to you. A little research, such
as searching maps, viewing satellite images on-line,
talking to other fishermen, or drives in the country
can help you find potential farm ponds to fish. The
next step involves determining who the landowner is
and obtaining their permission to gain access to your
new fishing hot spot.
What is the difference between a pond and a lake?
If you explore their definitions on-line, you will find
that there is no consensus and they vary greatly.
Some say a pond is filled by surface runoff and has
an intermittent drain, in contrast to a lake, which
has a year-round continuous water supply flowing
in and out. Others define a pond as being up to 12
acres in size and a lake as anything larger. A third
delineates a pond as a body of water where sunlight
penetrates to the bottom at all locations, compared
to a lake with some deeper depths where sunlight
never reaches. While there are natural ponds, the
vast majority in our area are man-made structures,
created by farmers or other landowners for watering
livestock, supplying irrigation, providing recreation,
benefitting fish & wildlife, storing water, or a combination of these uses. Most ponds were stocked with
one or more fish species at some point, bluegills and
largemouth bass being a common combination. Often after it is built, a pond is left alone with very little
human intervention or deliberate aquatic management. When the predator (largemouth bass) / prey
(bluegill) ratio gets significantly skewed, a pond can
become over-populated with stunted bluegills (almost all 6 inches or less due to a limited food supply)
and a few substantial largemouth bass (from gorging
on stunted bluegills).
Pursuing exceptional bass is only one factor that
makes farm pond fishing so exciting. In fact, largemouth bass are just one of over a dozen species that
I have caught from various farm ponds across the
Commonwealth. Sometimes, there is the surprise
factor of seeing what has hit your lure or bait when
you reel in your catch. My personal best crappie,
a remarkable 2 pound, 2 ounce specimen, nailed a
crankbait intended for bass in a 1-acre farm pond
beside an interstate highway. Remember to ask the
landowner if he/she wants you to practice catch-andrelease on their pond or if it is acceptable to keep
a few fish for consumption that meet the PF&BC’s
minimum size limits. A local farm pond can be your
secret spot to catch large fish or possibly a quantity
of fish. It is also an excellent place to teach a youngster or an adult how-to fish. Next week, we’ll discuss

The great 16th-century theologian Martin Luther
once experienced a long period of worry and
despondency. One day his wife dressed in black
mourning clothes.
“Who has died?” asked Luther.
“God,” said his wife.
“God!” said Luther, horrified. “How can you say
such a thing?”
She replied, “I’m only saying what you are living.”
Luther realized that he indeed was living as if
God were no longer alive and watching over them
in love. He changed his outlook from gloom to
gratitude.
Occasionally we too live as if God were dead. When
we are discouraged, we can turn to the Psalms.
Some of the writers faced bleak and barren times,
but they had one habit in common that kept them
from being soured: giving thanks to God. For
example, David wrote, “You have turned for me my
mourning into dancing . . . . O Lord my God, I will
give thanks to You forever” (Psalm 30:11-12).
Meeting every situation with thanksgiving isn’t a
denial of trouble. It helps us see those situations
from God’s perspective—as opportunities to discover His power and love.
Every time you express gratitude to God in a difficult situation, you’re declaring, “God is alive!”

For when I think of how the Lord has blessed me,
I cannot help but give my praise to Him. —Hess

with women, good skin is not exclusive to the fairer

than growing a beard to avoid the painful side effects
of shaving, men can treat their skin to a facial that revitalizes their skin and helps offset some of the more
painful side effects of taking a razor to their face.
• Improve appearance: One of the biggest benefits of receiving a facial is the
procedure’s effect on an individual’s appearance. Men are more prone to clogged
pores than women, but facials clean pores more deeply than store-bought scrubs
and cleansers, helping skin appear more vibrant and healthy. That improved appearance can impact a man’s self-esteem, which can benefit a man in both his
personal and professional lives.
• Combat aging: Wrinkles are a natural side effect of aging, but some men find
this particular part of the aging process more troublesome than others. Men
whose wrinkles doubled seemingly overnight may be able to slow the wrinkling
process by receiving a facial, which can help improve the elasticity of the skin
and contribute to cellular regeneration that helps men avoid looking older than
they really are.

3 Tbsp. chopped walnuts
2 Tbsp. sunflower kernels
2 tsp. active dry yeast
3/4 tsp. salt
3/4 C. water
1/3 C. vegetable oil
1/4 C. buttermilk
1/4 C. honey
2 eggs
3/4 C. whole wheat flour
1 Tbsp. cold water
In a mixing bowl, combine 2 cups all-purpose flour,
3/4 cup oats, sugar, walnuts, sunflower kernels, yeast
and salt. In a saucepan, heat the water, oil, buttermilk
and honey to 1200-1300. Add to dry ingredients; beat
until well blended. Beat in 1 egg until smooth. Stir
in whole wheat flour and enough remaining all-purpose flour to form a soft dough. Turn onto a floured
surface; knead until smooth and elastic, about 6-8
minutes. Place in a greased bowl, turning once to
grease top; Cover and let rise in a warm place until doubled, about 1 hour. Punch dough down; turn
onto a lightly floured surface. Divide in half; shape
into round loaves. Sprinkle 2 tablespoons oats on a
greased baking sheet; place loaves over oats. Cover
and let rise until doubled, about 45 minutes. Beat
remaining egg and cold water; brush over loaves.
Sprinkle with remaining oats. Bake at 3500 for 20-25
minutes or until golden brown. Cool on wire racks.
Yield: 2 loaves.

It’s shorts and tank top season. The temperature
has been warm enough to dress this way for several
days in a row. So, I pulled out the box of Summer
clothing stored in the attic. There were a few surprises in there. I had purchased some discounted
items, that still had the tags attached. They all fit! No
wiggling or contortions required.
Shock replaced that moment of victory when I
stood in front of the mirror. Over those cold winter
months of inactivity, I had gained a few features that
did not previously exist. Not a spare tire or love handles, but undesirable just the same.
National Gardening Exercise Day is June 6 this
year. Perhaps this is the answer for my excess personage... Get a workout and tend garden vegetables
at the same time. But I must be cautious. Farmers
do very real, very hard work. I’m spying a plot of
rich dirt that borders the driveway. That would be
enough ground to tone up and increase my seratonin level. First, let’s take a moment to reflect on my
experience from last year.
Before diving into athletic gardening, stretching those dormant muscles into wakefulness is important. With feet spread apart I would touch my
right toe with my left hand and then alternate. As
my body began to warm up, the pace of toe touching
increased. It felt a lot like junior high gym class. To
save time I decided that the stretching would take
place between the rows of plants. With each downward reach I would bypass the toe and grab a weed.
This is when the neighbors began to admire my
technique. As I came back to center after each downward reach, I found that my hands were filling up
with weeds. The clods of dirt that stubbornly clung
to the roots were making the weeds heavy. The answer was obvious. When coming back to an upright
position just let the weeds fly. At that point my weeding speed increased dramatically. As I made the turn
to begin the next two rows, I saw that the neighbors
were now outside, spellbound.
I was surprised at how quickly the weeding was
completed. My accumulated weeding time did incur
a penalty though. It took an hour to sweep the weeds
and dirt clods from sixty feet of driveway. An extra
penalty was assessed for time required to “undecorate” an oak tree that was on the other side of the
garden. While I noticed the dog chasing my initial
tosses, it took another hour and a box of treats to
coax her from under the car.
Take my word for it, a hoe and rake can be hard
work. They can also be a lot of fun when chopping
dirt. I was able reenact a couple of Star Wars scenes.
First I swung the hoe around like a light saber, bring
it down sharply to “kill” some unwanted weeds.
Then, with the appropriate screaming, I sent the
rake twirling around me as only a martial arts master can. With a grimace on my face, and one last yell,
I stopped sharply with rake extended.
That’s when the neighbors got involved. Lucky
for me they called medical professionals just before I
collapsed. Now as I’m remembering how it went last
year, I guess I’ll just go for a walk instead. © 2014
