We all enjoyed having the presidents visit DCCC. ” — Jenny Varner, Vice President of External Affairs and Executive Director of the DCCC Foundation Future-Focused October 2012 With a Visit from Community College Leaders In October 2011, DCCC bustled with activity as it hosted the state’s community college leadership. The N.C. Association of Community College Presidents held its fall conference in DCCC’s Conference Center for two days. Presidents from North Carolina’s 58 community colleges joined DCCC President Mary E. Rittling, who had served as the association’s vice president during the 201112 academic year. Joining the community college presidents on campus was Scott Ralls, president of the North Carolina Community College System, and members of his staff. Rittling, who is now serving as the association’s 2012–2013 president, provided an update on the many recent changes that had taken place at DCCC. Since the presidents’ last visit, DCCC had opened its new conference center, Transportation Technology Center, Bookstore, Student Union space, Advanced Manufacturing Machining Lab, new Welding Lab and a Learning Commons. A land gift of 183 acres, named the Link Campus (across Business 85 from the current Davidson Campus), had also been given to the DCCC Foundation since it last hosted the college officials. Leonard, 2011 President of the DCCC Foundation Board of Directors Future-Focused November 2012 With a Record-setting Gift Last fall, the DCCC Foundation announced that it had received a gift of more than $7.5 million from the late Christine Harris of Lexington. The donation was by far the largest gift to the College and is one of the largest gifts in North Carolina community college history. Harris’ interest in the College began during her son’s time as a DCCC student. He graduated with honors in 1975 with an associate in science degree and then also completed additional coursework at DCCC before pursuing a four-year degree. Harris was grateful to DCCC for providing her son the opportunity to achieve educational goals while he struggled with health issues that required him to stay close to home. The extent of her interest in DCCC, however, was not known until her death. The Harris name has been synonymous with the telephone industry in Lexington for more than 100 years. Lexcom Communications was founded in 1896 as Lexington Telephone Company by a group of local business leaders and was one of the city’s oldest independent companies when it was acquired by Windstream in 2010. William F. Harris, Christine Harris’ father-in-law, assumed leadership of the company in 1905. The Harris family and the telephone company have been longtime supporters of DCCC through scholarship funds and other contributions. In the past, teachers would lecture on topics, then students would attend labs to apply what they learned. Now, we have taken lecture material and made it mobile, thereby saving the classroom for more personal instruction. ” — Randy Ledford, Dean of the School of Business, Engineering and Technical Studies December 2012 Future-Focused With Advanced Manufacturing DCCC has jump-started the careers of many students enrolled in advanced manufacturing programs with the use of iPads and some of the latest equipment available. The new technology is possible thanks to a $2.67 million grant from the United States Department of Labor — which is DCCC’s portion of an $18.83 million grant awarded in 2011 and shared by a consortium of 10 community colleges in North Carolina. Students are already using the iPads, and the grant money will likely purchase more to accommodate the growing need for the technology. 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 13 14 15 16 17 18 19 20 21 22 23 24 25 26 27 28 29 30 31 1 2 3 4 5 The new technology helps cut down on class time and allows students to move through programs more swiftly — enabling them to return to the workforce at a faster pace, thereby filling area advanced manufacturing jobs. The redesigned curriculum also has students working in renovated manufacturing labs with the latest equipment available and includes training on “soft skills” such as learning to be a valuable team member; the program is designed to take a holistic approach. The grant also focused on sustaining the workforce by building up one of its high school programs at the Yadkin Valley Regional Career Academy, where advanced manufacturing is one area of study. The joint effort will sustain a viable workforce for this booming industry. Christmas Day www.davidsonccc.edu Mary jump-started her future with a 2-year degree from DCCC. She transferred those credits toward a bachelor’s degree in exercise science at Winston-Salem State University. Mary says she may even pursue a higher degree in physical therapy sometime in the future. “ I saw so many doors of opportunity, but I realized that having a degree was the key to unlocking them. DCCC provided that key to me. ” Mary will tell you if she can do it, so can you. Ryann jump-started his future with a great job after just one year in the heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) program at DCCC. After studying business at another college, Ryann wanted a quickturnaround career where he could begin making a good living. “ It was clear to us that Ryann had a solid technical foundation for us to build upon. The DCCC program has certainly prepared Ryann well for the HVAC industry. ” — Ryann’s manager at Johnson Controls in Greensboro Ryann will tell you if he can do it, so can you. Asia jump-started her future with an associate of arts degree at DCCC. The 2010 graduate of Davie County High School plans to transfer her credits to UNC School of the Arts in Winston-Salem and continue preparing for a professional acting and singing career. “ I really like that I can take all my classes on the Davie Campus in Mocksville. I feel like I’m part of the big DCCC family. I would definitely recommend the College to others. It’s great! ” Asia will tell you if she can do it, so can you. Future-Focused January 2013 With New Communications Strategies DCCC adopted a new strategic brand identity in early spring 2012. The DCCC brand committee began its work in August 2011 comprised of a cross-section of the College’s internal audiences, including staff, faculty, current students, alumni and trustees. After a great deal of research and surveying under the tutelage of an outside agency, the committee unveiled a new brand look and feel for marketing efforts. More than 550 stakeholders weighed in on the process. Included in the portfolio of changes was a move toward identifying and highlighting student photos and success stories, which serve as mirrors for prospective students. A new tagline – Our Dedication, Your Journey – embodies the defining attributes uncovered by the committee, and it was adopted for use in April 2012. The entire effort has culminated in a marketing and communications strategy that identifies and defines DCCC’s strengths, including a strong student focus, a dedicated and caring faculty and staff, and a breadth of programs that allow for options in careers and majors. “ It is important that our marketing efforts really reach our target audiences. Vice President Biden told a large crowd assembled in Brinkley Gymnasium that DCCC plays a critical role in educating the workforce to meet emerging business and economic development needs. The five-state, three-day trip has focused on innovative programs at community colleges, in partnership with area employers, helping train students to meet local workforce needs. 10 11 12 13 14 15 16 The resources provided by these grants allow schools like DCCC to partner with businesses to expand and improve their education and career training programs that can be completed quickly (two years or less). 17 18 19 20 21 22 23 26 27 28 1 2 DCCC, along with eight other North Carolina community colleges, had previously shared a $18.8 million Department of Labor grant to expand training partnerships with local employers. Biden’s visit announced another $500 million to create and expand innovative partnerships between community colleges and businesses to train workers with the skills employers need. The program complemented the administration’s broader agenda of helping every American have at least one year of post-secondary education and reaching the goal of America having the highest proportion of college graduates in the world by 2020. The rain forest in Panama looks perfect until you listen and no amphibian sounds can be heard. ” — Jeff Corwin, Wildlife Biologist and Emmy-winning Host March 2013 Future-Focused With Jeff Corwin’s Inspiration DCCC’s new zoo and aquarium science program hosted Emmy-winning wildlife biologist and conservationist Jeff Corwin last spring. “Life on earth is under a serious threat,” Corwin told a capacity crowd in the DCCC Conference Center. “By the middle of this century, more than one million species could vanish forever.” The internationally known television personality, naturalist, conservationist, author and exotic animal expert gave a private lecture to DCCC’s zoo and aquarium science students prior to his public address. Focusing on species extinction and the need for conservation and preservation of the natural world, Corwin said the five elements creating a “perfect extinction storm” are the loss of habitats, pollution, the unsustainable exploitation of species, climate change and human population growth. Corwin was introduced to tropical rain forests in 1984 while on an expedition to Belize. The experience fueled his interest in the study and conservation of these ecological marvels and in 1993 he addressed the General Assembly of the United Nations regarding the need to conserve rain forests. “We will lose three species during our conversation tonight,” Corwin said. “We lose something every 20 minutes on our planet.” When a species is lost, it could mean that crucial ways to fight and possibly cure human diseases are also lost. After all, community is the most important part of our name, and this dental clinic epitomizes our mission to serve the people of this region. ” — Mary Rittling, DCCC President All photos this page credit: Cliff Hollis, ECU News Services Future-Focused April 2013 With an ECU Dental Clinic In June 2012, DCCC had plenty to smile about, thanks to plans announcing an East Carolina University community service learning center coming to the campus. The center will bring dental care to low-income, underserved citizens and will provide educational opportunities to ECU’s dental students. The $3 million, 8,000-square-foot facility — with building construction planned for spring 2013 — will serve fourth-year dental students and dental residents from ECU. There, ECU students will have the opportunity to hone their patientcare techniques and learn the ins-and-outs of operating a community practice under the eyes of experienced faculty members. The center is set to have 16 dental chairs and will employ a variety of faculty and staff positions, as well as four to five students who will be at the center for nine-week rotations. Once open, the center will provide a variety of services, including general, preventive and emergency dental care and will include services such as crowns, root canals and bridges. The center is modeled for a community setting — providing students and dental residents an opportunity to practice in a real-world atmosphere. The center at DCCC is one of up to 10 centers that ECU plans to build across the state. She charged a cross-functional team examining student success factors to think beyond a ‘one-size-fits-all-model’ and to really examine various approaches to helping a diverse population of students navigate the process toward completion of a credential with labormarket value. — Susan Burleson, Executive Director, Research, Planning, and Innovation ” Future-Focused May 2013 With an Award-Winning President The North Carolina Community College system named Mary Rittling the 2012 President of the Year in April 2012. The State Board of Community Colleges established the award in 2001 to encourage, identify, and reward outstanding leadership and commitment to the community college’s mission. The Wells Fargo Foundation sponsors the award. Rittling was honored at the annual “Great Within the 58” Excellence Event for community colleges on April 19 at the Raleigh Convention Center. The award also provided the DCCC Foundation with a cash prize of $2,000. In her eight-and-a-half years as DCCC’s president, Rittling has overseen major campus expansions on both the Davidson and Davie campuses and established new learning centers in Lexington, Thomasville and Advance. In addition, she has fostered and strengthened local, state, regional and national relationships that benefit DCCC and this community over and over. Under her guidance, DCCC was noted for its work as one of three N.C. community colleges chosen for the national “Achieving the Dream” initiative. Collaborating with 130 other colleges across the U.S., DCCC is sharing data, research and strategies to increase student success, close achievement gaps and boost completion rates. They got kids excited about science, technology, engineering and math while building skills in teamwork and collaboration. ” — Jeannine Woody, Vice President of Academic Programs and Services June 2013 Future-Focused With Summer Camps After experimenting with soda-propelled rocket cars, testing LEGO robots and concocting glowing tonic water, students and staff felt that the first-ever “Big Brain Camp,” held in June 2012, was a smashing success. The camp, held over the summer for first-, second- and third-graders took part in fun and interactive science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) activities, including “Sparks in the Dark,” “Bubbling Lava Lamp,” “Glowing Tonic Water” and more. “I was delighted to see such a positive reaction from the children as they learned through hands-on STEM activities,” said Andrea Packer, Big Brain Camp teacher. “It was just as much a learning experience for us as teachers and volunteers as it was for the children. I loved every minute of the experience.” Not only was the camp a fun event for the students, it was also an excellent learning experience. Brenda Phillips, a Davidson County middle school teacher and DCCC alumna, said the camp was meant to be an entertaining and engaging way for students to learn. “As the children explored each activity, it was amazing to watch them scaffold from their prior knowledge to the new level of achievement they had acquired by the end of the camp,” Phillips said. In my opinion, travel is the most inherently educational activity there is. ” — Suzanne LaVenture, Director of International Education and Spanish Instructor Future-Focused July 2013 With an International Perspective During the summer of 2012, students at DCCC had the opportunity to see the world with their own eyes thanks to the College’s international education program, which allows student groups to travel to different parts of the world. In 2012, groups traveled to China and Peru, allowing them to explore a different culture and way of life. The five students who took the trip not only earned academic credit, but also experienced life in Beijing and Shanghai. They attended classes at Beijing Union University and Shanghai Financial University, visited government offices, and explored various historical sites including the Great Wall and the Forbidden City. 7 8 9 10 11 12 13 14 15 16 17 18 19 20 Students who traveled to Peru were part of DCCC’s first international service learning project. The group engaged in a variety of activities through “Los Amigos,” a Catholic mission located in Chimbote, including working in a health clinic, a preschool, a hospice, a soup kitchen and more. This set-up helps them successfully achieve their goals. ” — Kim Sepich, Vice President of Student Affairs Future-Focused August 2013 With a Student Success Center The B.E. Mendenhall Building on the main DCCC campus looks a little different on the inside these days — namely, the building went through major renovations recently to help give students an edge when they arrive on campus for the first time. DCCC calls the new space the Student Success Center. The center is a one-stop shop that takes care of many students’ needs, incorporating admissions, financial aid, advising, student records, counseling and career services. The space is meant to help students become more successful during their academic pursuits at DCCC. When a student now comes in, they have direct access to enrollment counselors, financial aid, advising, everything. “We wanted to make a connection with students when they first arrive — when they’re coming to college for the first time,” said Kim Sepich, vice president of student affairs. “The new center comprehensively addresses student needs in one spot. It reduces the runaround and really integrates the services.” The renovated space, which previously housed classrooms, is now an open space that includes a centralized desk staffed with enrollment counselors, as well as a presentation space where students are able to perform group work and more.
