THE ERASMUS PROGRAMME
Established in 1987, Erasmus is the EU’s flagship education and training programme for
mobility and cooperation in higher education across Europe. Its different actions not only
cater to students wishing to study or work abroad but also to professors and other staff,
even from enterprises, intending to teach abroad and to higher education staff seeking
training abroad. In addition, the programme supports higher education institutions (HEI)
to work together through intensive programmes, academic and structural networks and
multilateral projects as well as to reach out to the world of business.
• As concerns Erasmus student placements, higher education institutions must
hold an Extended Erasmus University Charter (for details see specific information on
the EUC) and consortia must hold an Erasmus Consortium Placement Certificate.
• During the course of his or her studies, an individual may receive a maximum of
three Erasmus grants: one grant for a period of study, one for a placement and one for
the participation in an Erasmus Mundus Master Course.
• For mobility, at least the sending or the receiving country must be an EU Member State.
• At least one of the organisations participating in a consortium must be from an EU
Member State.
Who can participate?
• Students and trainees learning in all forms of tertiary level education and Training
• Higher education institutions, as specified by EU Member States and other
participating countries
• Teachers, trainers and other staff within those institutions
http://ec.europa.eu/llp 8
• Associations and representatives of those involved in higher education, including relevant student, university, and teacher/trainer associations
• Enterprises, social partners and other representatives of working life
• Public and private organisations, including not-for-profit organisations and NGOs, responsible for the organisation and delivery of education and training at local, regional and national levels.
• Research centres and bodies concerned with lifelong learning issues
• Bodies providing guidance, counselling and information services
Types of activity:
DECENTRALISED ACTIVITIES
1.
Mobility of students for the purposes of studying at a higher education institution
in another participating country (SMS)
2.
Mobility of students for the purpose of carrying out placements in enterprises,
training centres, research centres or other organisations in another participating
country (SMP)
3.
Mobility of teaching staff from higher education institutions or invited staff from
enterprises to carry out teaching assignments at a higher education institution in
another participating country (STA)
4.
Mobility of teachers or other staff in higher education institutions for purposes of
undergoing training in another participating country (STT)
5.
Specific eligibility rules:
• To be eligible for the programme, higher education institutions must hold an
Erasmus University Charter (EUC). However, the Erasmus programme is open to a
wide spectrum of actors (enterprises, social partners, research centres etc) as defined
in Article 20 of the Decision of the European Parliament and the Council establishing
the LLP. These actors are of course not required to apply for an Erasmus University
Charter in order to organise student placements or to participate in multilateral projects,
networks or accompanying measures.
3
Erasmus intensive language courses (EILC)organised for incoming students in
participating countries where less widely used and less taught languages are spoken
6.
Erasmus intensive programmes (IP) organised on a multilateral basis
CENTRALISED ACTIVITIES
• Multilateral projects focusing inter alia on innovation, experimentation and the
exchange of good practice in the areas mentioned in the specific and operational
objectives. Projects should aim at developing and implementing study programmes;
4
developing strategies to modernise a specific aspect of higher education; promoting
cooperation between higher education and enterprises or addressing key issues for
virtual campuses.
• Networks (‘Erasmus Networks’) consisting of higher education institutions and
other organisations and representing either a discipline or a cross-disciplinary field
with the aim of developing new learning concepts and competencies (‘Academic
Networks’) or addressing a structural or management aspect of higher education with
a view to promoting innovative solutions and approaches (‘Structural Networks’).
• Initiatives which, though not eligible under the other actions of the Erasmus
Programme, will clearly contribute to achieving the Erasmus Programme’s objectives
(accompanying measures).
ACTIVITY COVERING BOTH ABOVE ACTIVITIES
Preparatory visits, helping to establish contacts with prospective partners in view of
entering into closer co-operation.

HISTORY OF THE INSTITUTION
Basic Targets
Cyprus University of Technology (CUT) was established by law in December 2003,
and admitted its first students in September 2007. It is a new, public, and independent
University situated in the heart of Limassol. CUT’s values, academic character, legal
status, organizational and administrative structure, its high quality levels for staff and
faculty selection procedure, and its relationship with the state, are not dissimilar from those
in place at the University of Cyprus. CUT is currently offering studies at Undergraduate,
Postgraduate and Doctorate level, as well as two Master Degree Programs in association
with the Harvard School of Public Health, the one year Master of Science in Environmental
Health and the one year Master of Science in Epidemiology and Biostatics.
The development of all departments is characterized by the following four targets:
Administrative Services
The University has set-up the following administrative services which are charged with
providing the administrative support to the University Community:
•
•
•
•
•
•
Library and Information Services
Estate Management
Research, International and Public Relations
Finance and Human Resources

Information Systems and Technology
The administrative services are the executive branch which secures the necessary
equipment, services and technological support needed. Also, the administrative services
carry out decisions made by the University Council and Senate (currently by the Interim
Governing Board).
•
To offer education to students of a high scientific, technological, and professional level.
•
To produce high quality research that will transcend the traditional boundaries
between basic and applied research, so that solutions may be offered to major problems
of society and the economy. Simultaneously to allow Cyprus to attain an important
position as a partner in a modern, European setting, and to secure significant external
research funding.
•
To promote University cooperation with local industry and the labor sector in
order to participate in the national effort to innovate and constantly improve products
and services.
THE INSTITUTION CAMPUS AND FACILITIES
All five Faculties are located in the city centre of Limassol. For the first phase of its operation,
covering the period 2007-2013, the buildings of the University will be located within the
old city centre. Old government buildings in the vicinity have been rented and a number
re-modified in order to house laboratories, lecture rooms as well as offices. During the
second phase (2014-2020) the University campus will expand to an area of approximately
50,000m2, within the city centre, about seven minutes walking distances from the old
city centre. The University Campus Master Plan envisages that until 2020 the number of
students will steadily grow to 6000, with 6 Faculties and 22-27 departments. The Master
Plan development aims to satisfy all satisfy the needs of the University. Student hostel are
currently being set-up within distance from both areas planned to house the University.
OBJECTIVES OF THE INSTITUTION
Vision and Mission
The University aspires to develop itself into a modern, pioneering University able to offer
education and high level research in leading branches of science and technology which
have high impact on the economic, technical, and scientific sectors. With its orientation
towards applied research, the University aspires to establish for itself a role in support of
the state and society in their efforts to confront problems, which cover all areas of science
and technology.

HISTORY OF THE INSTITUTION
European University Cyprus developed out of Cyprus College, which was founded in
1961 by Ioannis Gregoriou. The purpose was to provide a well-rounded education of high
caliber, so that students would acquire the necessary academic and practical knowledge in
their fields of study. A major development in the College’s history took place in 2000, when
programs of study leading to Diploma, Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees were accredited
by the Accreditation Council (SEKAP) of the Republic of Cyprus.
On 24 February 2006 an application was filed for the establishment and operation of
a private University according to the “Private Universities (Establishment, Operation
and Control) Law 109(1) of 2005”. The application evaluation process by the Evaluation
Committee of Private Universities of the Republic of Cyprus, which was laborious and
involved on-site visits of several evaluation teams, led to the acceptance of the application
in September 2007.
On 12 September 2007, the Council of Ministers of the Republic of Cyprus rendered a
decision for the establishment and operation of European University Cyprus, and licensed
it to start its operation as of 1 October 2007, with four Schools, namely, the School of
Arts and Education Sciences, the School of Business Administration, the School of
Humanities and Social Sciences, and the School of Sciences. All undergraduate and
postgraduate programs offered by European University Cyprus are recognised nationally
and internationally.
OBJECTIVES OF THE INSTITUTION
• The advancement of science, knowledge, learning and education, through
The University has a strong commitment to higher education in general, and to excellence
in teaching, research and service to the community in particular.
2. Education
The educational purpose of the University is to create an academic and social
environment, in which students are challenged, guided and supported to develop and
achieve their personal and professional goals. Students are challenged to develop as
independent, effective, active, rational and creative thinkers and citizens, who appreciate
and respect social, moral and ethical values. An integrated general education curriculum
and strong academic and career concentrations characterize the academic programs
of the University. Graduate programs offer the students the opportunity to extend and
deepen knowledge of specialized disciplines and to secure additional training for greater
occupational competency.
3. Research
The University views research as an important function, which stems from the awareness
of a responsibility to contribute to the expansion of knowledge and understanding. It,
therefore, encourages, promotes and supports research and scholarship among the
faculty and the students.

THE INSTITUTION CAMPUS AND FACILITIES
SCHOOLS – DEPARTMENTS – DEGREE PROGRAMS
The ideal location of the University, which is in one of the greenest areas of the capital,
ensures the beauty of the surrounding countryside, and ease of access to some of the
capital’s major business, governmental and social resources.
EUC was amongst the first universities in Cyprus to implement ECTS. Internationalization
is a key feature of EUC; the implementation of ECTS on various levels (course catalogue,
procedures for exchange students, availability of many programs in English, availability of
all relevant information in English) is a priority for all departments within EUC.
EUC offers a campus that is large enough to provide all the facilities every student needs,
but still compact enough to retain a friendly atmosphere and a sense of community in
which each individual is important. The EUC campus consists of the South, the West,
the East and the North block buildings, all equipped with facilities necessary to a modern
higher educational institution. The South block building houses the Library, the Computer
Center, PC-laboratories, the Executive Training Center, the Conference Hall, Multimedia
Lab, Classrooms and the Athletic Center.
The West block building houses the School of Sciences, the School of Arts and Education
Sciences, the Gymnastic Center, the Office of Student Affairs, the Cafeteria, the Office of
the Student Union, the Student Relationship Center, the Office of Athletics, the Employment
and Career Office.

HISTORY OF THE INSTITUTION
The Open University of Cyprus was established in 2002 and admitted its first students
in 2006. This new and expanding University was founded in response to the growing
demand for lifelong learning and continuing education and it is aiming to accommodate the
ever-growing demand for quality-driven programmes at all levels.
The Open University is a public corporate organization and until it reaches autonomy
and establishes its first University Council and Senate, it is governed by an Interim
Governing Board. The Administration is composed of the following Services: Academic
Affairs and Students’ Registrar, Financial Services and Human Resources, Information
Systems Services, International Relations and Quality Assurance, Library, Planning and
Development, Research and Students Welfare.
The overall administration of the University is currently the responsibility of the Interim
Governing Board. Administrative Services provide the essential infrastructure and
support for the implementation of the Governing Board’s decisions and policies and the
Director of Administration and Finance is responsible for the organization, coordination
and development of the administrative services of the Open University, in addition to the
implementation of the University’s development plans.
OBJECTIVES OF THE INSTITUTION
The main objectives of the Open University of Cyprus are the promotion of education and
lifelong learning through teaching and research, the enrichment of the cultural, social and
economic development of Cyprus and the promotion of Cyprus as a centre of education
and research in the neighboring region. The Open University of Cyprus is aspiring to
become a pioneer institution in distance teaching and learning methods, utilizing an
innovative electronic platform to provide education in an interactive environment.
In this context, the Open University establishes itself as an innovative educational and
research institution, acknowledging that education is not mere accumulation of knowledge,
but it must also encourage students’ active participation in the process of learning and
acquisition of this knowledge, necessary for a responsible and active involvement in the
community. Thus, the Open University is designing programmes at all levels that meet the
needs of both the labour market and the society in general.
Part of what makes a successful university is a strong record in research. The Open
University is committed and promotes broad, vibrant and quality research in various areas,
while also aiming towards the development of methodologies and corresponding high
technologies for open and distance learning. Encouraging its academics to collaborate in
33
research projects, both at national and international level, the Open University is growing
fast, fostering and supporting aspiring research personnel. In the framework of its strategic
development and international alliance, the Open University is a member of various
European and International university organizations and networks and cooperates, through
inter-university agreements with universities and research centres, for the promotion of
education, lifelong learning, research and student and staff exchanges.
In the framework of its social responsibility, the Open University is cooperating with various
institutions in Cyprus on research projects specifically aimed to target the needs of the
industry and the economy of the island. Moreover, public lectures, workshops and other
events are organized as a means to promote and educate on issues of scientific and wider
interest.
THE INSTITUTION’S FACILITIES
The Administration of the Open University is currently housed in a recently acquired
building at Latsia, Nicosia, and some of its programmes’ offices are located in two other
buildings in the centre of Nicosia.
Nonetheless, the Open University promotes education opportunity to all, irrespective of
location. Distance education entails that students have the opportunity to study at their
own pace without having to attend conventional classes, seminars or labs. It is a teaching
methodology used when the student and teacher are separated by time and place. Thus,
the proximity from the premises of the Open University in Nicosia is irrelevant to the
effective delivery of high quality education.
The Open University is utilizing an innovative electronic platform to provide education
in an interactive environment. The Faculty uses this platform for content creation and
delivery and the students use it to identify all relevant information concerning the courses
and their modules and to contact the Faculty and their fellow students using synchronous
and asynchronous technologies.
FACULTIES & DEGREE PROGRAMS
The undergraduate and postgraduate programmes of the Open University of Cyprus are
established on the basis of the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS). To obtain a
Bachelor’s degree, students must complete at least 240 ECTS credits according to the
requirements of the programme, whereas to obtain a Master’s degree a student will need
to complete 90-120 ECTS credits.

OBJECTIVES OF THE INSTITUTION
The main objectives of the University of Cyprus are the promotion of scholarship and
education through teaching and research, and the enhancement of the cultural, social and

lectures and other events focused on issues of scholarly, scientific and wider interest.
In addition, the University organizes lectures, cultural events, exhibitions, concerts and
other activities open to the general public. Our institution cooperates with many cultural
organizations, local authorities, and others to promote culture, both for the benefit of the
academic community and the students, as well as for society at large.
THE INSTITUTION CAMPUS AND FACILITIES
The University is currently housed in the recently built facilities at the new University
Campus, the former Pedagogical Academy of Cyprus in the centre of Nicosia, as well
as a number of buildings at Latsia. In addition to the main buildings, the University owns
or rents other buildings in the same area, to cover its housing needs until the completion
of the permanent Campus. Upon completion, the University Campus will be able to
accommodate a total of 10,000 students.
To date, the basic infrastructure of the University Campus, as well as the Services and
Stores Buildings, the Student Residences (Phase 1a), the Faculty of Pure and Applied

HISTORY OF THE INSTITUTION
Intercollege has established itself as a dynamic and respected institution of higher
education in just over 30 years. It is the only college in Cyprus with three campuses,
located in the major cities of Nicosia, Limassol and Larnaca.
Beginning as a small educational institution preparing Cypriots for professional
examinations, Intercollege is today the largest private college in Cyprus – a vibrant
international college where students of many ages, ethnic and cultural backgrounds may
earn undergraduate and graduate degrees, as well as professional qualifications.
In 2007 the University of Nicosia was established, with a number of Academic Programmes
from Intercollege Nicosia Campus transferring to it. A central feature of Intercollege’s
identity is this special relationship to the University of Nicosia, a relationship that allows
its students to have access to the University’s library, learning and recreational resources,
but more importantly perhaps, to continue their studies, if they wish, in a quality University
in which they will be particularly welcome. The three campuses of Intercollege (Nicosia,
Limassol, and Larnaca) maintain very strong ties with the University of Nicosia.
After 2007 and the establishment of the University of Nicosia, the Erasmus University
Charter for Intercollege is managed from the Limassol Campus, and caters only to the
Limassol and Nicosia Centers.
The College admission policy accommodates students with varied academic abilities and aptitudes
– on the condition that students achieve the minimum programme requirements to graduate.
Intercollege’s programmes are modelled on American and European higher education. The
College is committed to maintaining standards which comply with those of Western higher
education, in order to provide students with diverse transfer opportunities for further study.
Objectives
In pursuit of its mission, Intercollege strives to:
•
Offer quality, career-oriented undergraduate programmes, graduate studies in selected fields, and quality professional programmes
Implement the College motto “Excellence in Education”, by encouraging students to strive for excellence in every activity

their academic and career goals, and assuming responsible roles in a changing world of
international cooperation and interdependence.
•
•

Philosophy
THE INSTITUTION CAMPUS AND FACILITIES
Intercollege is international in philosophy, development and outlook. Conscious of its unique
location at the crossroads of three continents, the College strives to enhance opportunities
for education and understanding between people of different cultures. Intercollege aims
at promoting both high academic standards and high principles of character. Students
are encouraged to acquire facts and competencies in various skills, as well as to develop
cultural awareness, social responsibility and personal integrity.
The Limassol Campus is conveniently located in the heart of the city of Limassol, only a
twenty-minute walk from the coast. From the Campus, one is able to travel to other cities
and regions in under one hour – ideal for those who wish to discover the island in their
leisure time.
Fostering student-teacher involvement in learning is the most important activity at
Intercollege. The faculty members are encouraged to blend academic knowledge with
professional experience inside the classroom and to emphasize a personalized approach
to education. Through close interaction with faculty and staff, students are helped to
examine their goals, abilities, and options for the future.
67
The premises make provision for all aspects of student life: visual aid technology is available
in all classes – teleconferencing facilities are also available in certain classrooms; computer
labs are equipped with state-of-the-art hardware and software; a well-stocked library; a
bookshop; a gym for the keep-fit fanatics; and a cafeteria for the spirited student body.
The Nicosia Campus shares the same premises with the University of Nicosia.

INSTITUTIONS
Cyprus Pedagogical Institute
Cyprus Pedagogical Institute
History of the Institution
Departments and Programmes Offered
The Pedagogical Institute was founded in 1972 by decision of the Council of Ministers and
started operating in 1973. The aim of the Pedagogical Institute is to cater for the continuous
training of the educators at all levels so as to assist them in their efforts for professional and
personal development. As of June 2002, the Curriculum Development Unit (C.D.U.) has
been incorporated into the Pedagogical Institute. Within the framework of the Educational
Reform, in June 2008, the Scientific Council for the Pedagogical Institute and the Centre
of Educational Research and Evaluation were established having the mission to advise
the Ministry of Education and Culture on issues related to the continuous professional
development of educators and the research on issues that are within the responsibilities
of the two Directorates. There are three Departments now at the Pedagogical Institute,
the Department of Training, the Department of Educational Documentation and the
Department of Educational Technology. As of 2009, the Pedagogical Institute runs with a
new structure.
A. Department of Training
Objectives of the Institution
The mission of the Pedagogical Institute is developmental and covers all levels of
education and works towards various directions:
•
Offers in-service training to educators of all levels through several compulsory programmes and optional seminars,
•
plans and executes education research and evaluation studies,
•
observes and adapts current trends in Pedagogy,
•
promotes the use of New Technologies in Education and
•
undertakes the writing and publication of teaching books, the designing
of the Curriculum and the production of teaching materials.
The Institution campus and facilities
The main building of the Pedagogical Institute is located at Latsia. An outlier is operating
in Limassol so as to cover the needs of the districts of Limassol and Paphos. The library,
found in the main building of the Pedagogical Institute, includes a variety of scientific
journals and books.
79
The activities of the Department of Training are aimed at the training of educators of all
levels. This is achieved by offering: repeated series of courses, optional seminars, parents’
seminars, seminars on a school basis, conferences, workshops and seminars of general
interest. It is stressed that the emphasis of educational training is now shifted from offering
central training to educators to the adoption of other methods of support: a combination of
central training and classroom application, distance learning, development of supportive
material and application of supportive programmes in school units. Within this framework,
as of October 2008, an Induction Training Programme is offered for the first time to the
newly appointed Educators and Mentors of all levels.
The training of educators intends to improve teaching, to promote creative learning and
educational innovation as well as to reinforce critical thinking.
The Department of Training offers Training Programmes that cover the needs of the
various Departments of the Ministry of Education and Culture and the priorities set by the
Ministry. Special emphasis is given on the issues derived from the Educational Reform
and, as a result, various training actions are planned and are applied. Specifically, during
the school year 2010 – 2011, the Pedagogical Institute, in cooperation with the Office
of Curricula Configuration and the relevant Department of the Ministry of Education and
Culture, planned a long-term training programme for the introduction and the application
of the New Curriculum Programmes for both the offices of the Ministry of Education and
Culture and the educators. The application of the programme started during the school
year 2010 – 2011.
Repeated Series of Courses
•
Training Programme of Assistant Headmasters of Secondary General and Secondary Technical and Professional Education
•
Training Programme of Newly Appointed Headmasters of Secondary General and Secondary Technical and Professional Education
•
Training Programme of Newly Appointed Headmasters of Primary Education
•
Induction Training Programme for Newly Appointed Educators and Mentors of all levels

Optional Seminars
C. Department of Educational Documentation
Optional seminars are carried out every year in all districts of Cyprus, for educators of all
levels. The needs and the suggestions of various Departments of the Ministry of Education
and Culture are considered when determining the subjects.
The Department of Educational Documentation has set as a main aim the promotion of
professional development of educators by supplying constant information on the new
trends in education, by publishing books that serve the aims of the curriculum and by
creating educational supportive material.
Parents’ Seminars
Seminars for parents are offered every year on a school basis mainly in the form of
lectures, based on the needs expressed by the parents themselves.
Seminars on a school basis
To achieve the aim mentioned above, the library of the Pedagogical Institute is constantly
being enriched with new books and scientific journals as well as with CD’s and computer
applications. The basic areas on which effort is put in enriching the library are the following:
teaching methodology, educational innovations and teaching practices, educational
training and educational management.
The Pedagogical Institute offers support to school units based on the needs that the
schools express. This support can be in the form of: lectures-discussions with teachers’
associations, or by offering a series of seminars on the same subjects and by organising
programmes carried out in class and at school premises.
The domain of Educational Documentation also publishes books of educational content
that can help educators achieve the targets of the curriculum, as well as to meet new
trends in education.
Conferences
D. Curriculum Development Unit (C.D.U )
The Pedagogical Institute organises and offers every year a number of workshops

Education and Culture but also to inform educators about the new trends and methods in
the field of Education.
The Curriculum Development Unit (C.D.U) deals with the publication of teaching books and
the production of teaching materials, both for the educators as well as for the students.
Moreover, C.D.U is responsible for ordering the teaching books that are published in Greece.
B. Department of Educational Technology
The Department of Educational Technology aims to assist the promotion of innovations
related to new technologies in education, to carry out programmes, to conduct research

THE INSTITUTION CAMPUS AND FACILITIES
Athalassa Campus
The Cyprus Institute utilizes the former Higher Technical Institute (HTI) premises in
Nicosia, which have been recently renovated, based on the needs of the Institute. It is
also constructing new buildings, including technologically advanced laboratories that are
now well under way. The first renovated building houses EEWRC and was inaugurated in
December 2007. The building has been named after the late Guy Ourisson, in memory of
his outstanding contribution to the development of the Cyprus Institute.
Pafos Facilities
In 2007, the Pafos and Geroskipou Municipalities offered the Cyprus Institute several
attractive sites and facilities, including the Pafos District Officer’s Residence, a remarkable
colonial building in the city of Pafos. This historical building will be the headquarters of the
Science and Technology in Archaeology Research Center (STARC), offering premises
for conferences, seminars, outreach activities and summer schools. Marine research
activities will be conducted and will include dedicated facilities near the city’s picturesque
and historical harbor.
CyI is organized around two major complementary academic structures: the Research
Centers and the College. The Research Centers are being developed first, in conjunction
with post-graduate doctoral studies, because of the availability of funding and the need
to establish and maintain, from the very beginning, internationally recognized excellence.
The academic and research units are heavily dependent on each other for their success
and effectiveness. The organization of the CyI is therefore, from the onset, interdisciplinary
and designed to facilitate this duality.
The Cyprus Institute will continue to be:
