Parish Mission Statement We, the parish family of St. Anthony Roman Catholic Church welcome all, young and old, active or inactive, committed or alienated, to enrich their lives by joining and participating in our faith community. We seek to reflect the light of Jesus Christ by reaching out to serve all, and by sharing our joy and hope, as we continue our faith journey. May our lives, inspired by the Holy Spirit, and nourished by the Eucharist, bear witness to our love for neighbors near and far. ST. ANTHONY PARISH Dear Parishioners, Father Tadeusz Pacholczyk is a priest of the Fall River Diocese who holds a Ph.D. with a Doctorate in neuroscience from Yale and did post-doctoral work at Harvard. Currently he serves as the Director of Education at the National Catholic Bioethics Center in Philadelphia. He is a frequent columnist with the PILOT and writes on matters concerning bioethics and other medical moral issues. I mention this because this past week Father Pacholczyk wrote a column titled "Cremains and Respect for the Human Body." Realizing that not many might have had the chance to read the current teaching about cremation, and because there is a lot of misunderstanding about it, I would like to quote from Father's article, since the question of cremation comes up frequently. Father T (we'll call him that) states: For Catholics, cremation is considered an acceptable form of handling the human body after death, although, as noted in the Order of Christian Funerals, cremation does not enjoy the same value as burial of the body...the Church prefers and urges that the body of the deceased be present for the funeral rites, since the presence of the human body better expresses the values which the Church affirms in its rites. Our parish experience, and I am sure the experience of all parishes, is that our experience is threefold, a funeral Mass with the body present, a funeral Mass with the cremains present, and a memorial Mass without the body or cremains present. Sometimes the choice for one of these options is necessitated by a time factor. When Cardinal Burke was bishop of the Diocese of Lacrosse, Wisconsin, he noted some of the problems which cremation might cause. He wrote in a Pastoral Letter that with the growing presence of cremation, there has also developed a certain lack of care for the cremated remains of the dead. Sometimes remains are left unclaimed at funeral homes. Cardinal Burke noted that it is not permitted to scatter cremated remains over a favorite place. Moreover, keeping the ashes of a loved one on the fireplace or in the attic can downplay or deny the human dignity of the deceased, tempting one to treat the mortal remains as just another item to be moved around among our various trinkets. One reason why cremation has become so commonplace is the growing lack of burial space in our cemeteries. Many cemeteries are building columbaria where the remains can be buried. Father T concludes his article with the reminder that the sacred memory of our departed family and friends, in sum, calls us to carefully attend to their remains with authentic and objective gestures of respect. The Code of Canon Law was revised in 1983, but I thought it would be interesting to look up the Code under which we were taught, the Code of 1917 which came directly from the Code of the Council of Trent, and see how far we have come. Canon 1203 states: "The bodies of the faithful deceased must be buried, and their cremation is reprobated. If a person has in any way ordered that his body be cremated, it is illicit to obey such instructions, and if such a provision occur in a contract, last testament, or in any document whatsoever, it is to be disregarded." Fortunately, the revised Code of Canon Law states: "The Church earnestly recommends that the pious custom of burying the bodies of the dead be observed. It does not, however, forbid cremation unless it has been chosen for reasons which are contrary to Christian teaching. This should allay any fears of anyone who might think the Church still forbids cremation. Sincerely, Fr John R.
