I don’t think I will ever lose that sense of
anticipation when summer arrives. Just like the school kid I was so long
ago, at this time of year I see lazy days stretching endlessly in front of me.
Now that’s a daydream if there ever was one, yet I like to allow the idea
of myself casually relaxing in some lush outdoor setting, not a care in the
world. It’s a picture I find very peaceful.
In fact, stress experts say we should all look for ways to simplify our
days and build in more time to enjoy our friends and our families. Home
is a perfect place to start doing this and I think the London builders of
today are planning their new neighbourhoods and houses accordingly. In
Sifton Properties Ltd.’s Ballymote Woods and Fanshawe Ridge, homes by
Rockmount Homes and Artisan Homes Inc. fill the bill, especially for busy,
young families who want not only casual and organized living spaces,
but well-serviced communities as well (page 18). And in Woodholme
Park, another Sifton neighbourhood, builders such as Gentrac Homes are
satisfying the sophisticated tastes of today’s empty nesters while giving
them homes that seem almost maintenance-free (page 30).
Of course, you don’t have to move to a new house to simplify your life.
There are dozens of ways to ease up right where you are, many of which
you will enjoy reading about in this summer issue of OUR HOMES
London. Relax and enjoy your home and it becomes like nourishment
for the soul.
Here’s to a safe and happy summer with your friends, your family and
your home.
Expert country property guide
If you are a discriminating buyer/seller of rural property, Elizabeth’s intimate knowledge of London and the surrounding countryside makes her the ideal guide.
Her enthusiasm for country life comes from a lifetime of living it. Her expertise derives from over 20 years of experience in matching clients with their ideal property. Whether you
are looking for or selling a country estate, an equestrian centre, a working farm, a hobby farm or simply rural living in a distinctive home, you will find Elizabeth’s straight forward,
pleasant approach, the answer to realizing that dream. She can show you historic homes in charming small towns, as well as large country estates and farms on fertile land crisscrossed
by rivers and streams. She can show you properties anywhere in the heart of rural Middlesex County: north, south, east or west. With Elizabeth’s diligence and proven track record in
country estate and farm sales, she is the expert country property guide you are looking for.

London’s Leader in Shop-at-Home Flooring Services
When I was 25, I bought my first home on
Colborne Street near Piccadilly. Although warned by my father, “Never
fall in love with your real estate,” I did truly love that home.
It needed renovations and updating, so I scoured magazines and
ear marked pages to create the home of my dreams. I would often walk
the neighbourhood at dusk when the glow of lights radiated from well
decorated, well loved homes nearby. I often wished I could knock on the
door and look inside.
At OUR HOMES London we try to bring you that very feeling, the
opportunity to open the door and have a peek at the havens others have
created. Whether you are reinventing an existing space or working on
a new one, herein is some additional inspiration. As always, we include
where great treasures can be found and the local businesses that can help
you achieve the home of your dreams.
New homeowner, or experienced connoisseur, we are always on the
lookout for something to brighten and refine our surroundings. Stay
inspired, dear readers, and remember to shop locally whenever possible!
Here’s to a summer filled with love, relaxation and comfort in your
home, on your patio or in your garden with those you enjoy most.

LOVE
EVERY INCH
OF YOUR HOME
BEFORE
Every year when summer rolls around I stare out at the deck and start amassing
large scale plans for vegetable beds and new furniture, sunshades and fire pits.
The season closes and alas, we have usually accomplished one or two of those
items. Sun kissed and relaxed, I normally care less about the surroundings and
more about the summer experience – family, friends and being outdoors.

Lighting: You can’t depend on candles and a still
night when entertaining outdoors. Make sure you
have adequate lighting. I love the pendant light by
Davey Lighting. It’s industrial, classic and modern
all at the same time. Hang one off to the side as a
subtle design feature or over your side entry.
pendant light, Design within reach
faux grass, Versatile grass
Fire pit: Not a new concept, but this tells me that
it’s a good investment! No one gets tired of having a
wood burning fire close by and one that’s enclosed
is a safe choice for a terrace. What a wonderful
thing to cuddle up by on a cool summer evening.
Greenery: Create a living wall with beautiful
greenery and set up a drip irrigation system to
feed it (you can even do this off of a rain barrel for
the most eco-friendly approach). There are several
do-it-yourself kits available on the market that can
be set up on a timer for the ultimate hands-free
gardening experience. The living wall becomes a
lush backdrop to your outdoor space – modern,
lovely and useful too.

Porch swing: You can’t go wrong with Dedon. If
I could break into someone else’s bank account, then
their new Swingrest may be my first purchase. For a
more budget-friendly approach, consider a simple,
classic wood swing hanging from chains on your
outdoor porch. You know what makes this design
decision work best? A hot day and some lemonade!

AFTER
THE RENOVATION CHALLENGE
The original kitchen lacked flow as result of two opposing peninsula islands and the dining
area was missing connectivity from the main family room.
Daniel Pouzet Swingrest, Dedon Furniture
Shatterproof glasses: If you’re going to
entertain outside, then you may want to leave the
crystal inside. There are tons of amazing plastictype glasses on the market that look just like glass.
You can find a few great ideas from Govino on
the Wine Enthusiast’s website. My favourites are
stemless with a cute notch-out for your finger.
THE CREATIVE SOLUTION
We decided to keep the refrigerator, sink and dishwasher in the same location to reduce
cost, but introduced two distinct zones to the kitchen to create proper flow. We designed the
kitchen to have two islands so that one island could be dedicated to cooking near the stove
and wall ovens, and the other with seating for family and entertaining near the family room
below.

Fabrics: If your loungers are looking a little tired,
then try reupholstering the cushions in one of the
new Sunbrella fabrics. They look like interior fabrics,
not something that can last through summers of
outdoor use. Look at Canvas Granite for a cool linenlooking grey. With pets and kids around, it would be
a clever choice for indoor use as well.
Fake grass: The new faux grass is truly
impressive. With an under-layer of what appears
to be dried grass, you would be hard pressed to tell
the difference. It no longer looks like Astroturf.
And the best part? No dandelions. If you have an
area that doesn’t get a lot of light or you’re short on
time to care for your lawn, then try it! You won’t be
disappointed. (…and you don’t have to tell!) OH
Living wall planter, GroVert

Extra seats: If you entertain for larger groups,
then be prepared. Have an extra bench or two
around to cram a few little ones onto or to pull
up for extra seating around a pool. I love a mix of
white weave with teak for these pieces. The simple
design will collaborate well with existing pieces.
Shade: As an alternative to a patio umbrella or
a built-in pergola, a shade sail is a fun way to stay
protected from the sun. The waterproof polyester
material comes in great colours, like rust or royal
blue, adding a pop of colour to your space. It also
protects you from UV rays. They look modern and
they’re budget-friendly.

According to Phil Masschelein, Sifton Properties Ltd.’s Vice-President
of Neighbourhood Developments, roughly a quarter of the city’s housing
stock or neighbourhood development is a Sifton project.
While Sifton may have been one of the first to build several houses
at once on spec in the 1940s, the company has always kept the eventual
homeowner in mind. “We’re definitely attentive to what the consumer
wants,” says Masschelein.
Today’s home buyers are looking for schools in the area, neighbourhood
parks and trails, and easy access to a commercial hub, he says.
Those amenities are all available in Sifton’s latest neighbourhood
developments in London’s north end – Ballymote Woods on Sunningdale
and Fanshawe Ridge. OUR HOMES London recently toured a model
home in each community.

Rockmount Homes’ model, The Ballymote, creates an immediate

The walls, painted Benjamin Moore’s Balboa Mist by George Miholics

The room’s focal point is a sleek, built-in feature wall by Celtic
Carpentry Inc. “The idea was to create a functional, modern entertainment
unit for the prospective home buyer,” says Rockmount Homes’ president
and owner, Margaret Hazzard. The custom-made unit is designed to hold a
large flat-screen television and other components, with all the wiring neatly
hidden, as well as a gas fireplace from Forest City Mechanical.
The large, open-concept space includes the kitchen designed by
Cardinal Fine Cabinetry Corp. The shaker-style cabinets provide a
simple backdrop for dark granite counter tops from Sloan StoneDesign,
stainless steel appliances and the dramatic range hood.
In this particular home, the dinette overlooks a private backyard with
established trees along the back fence.
Grey hardwood floors by Scherba’s Great Floors create a unified
living space. “This is a new colour that has been very popular,” says Hazzard.
The 2152 sq. ft. home has already sold, she adds.
Four comfortable bedrooms are found upstairs. The master bedroom
features a high cathedral ceiling, large walk-in closet and stylish en suite
bathroom with corner Jacuzzi tub.
The basement is ready to be finished by the new homeowners.
“Everyone has their own ideas about how they’d like to use the space,”
explains Hazzard. “But if people ask for a finished basement, we are
happy to do it.”
Located on the north side of Sunningdale Rd., east of Adelaide,
Ballymote Woods offers a variety of lot sizes and home styles. “One of
the great things about this neighbourhood is that people can walk to
the Stoney Creek Community Centre and YMCA and the schools,” says
Masschelein. “It’s a strong selling point.”

Artisan Homes Inc.’s model, The Berkley, combines all the comforts of
a traditional home with contemporary design.
“We’re seeing more people wanting to incorporate a modern look
into their homes,” says Artisan Homes’ owner Gerry Knoester. “The way
we’ve done that here is in the detail work. We’ve gone with many more
contemporary finishings.”
The 2,800 sq. ft. home features four bedrooms on three finished
levels. Clean trim and shaker-style doors, by County Heritage Forest
Products Ltd., used throughout give the house a sleek, uncluttered feel.
A large great room takes up most of the ground floor. Its geometricallypatterned feature wall makes a striking backdrop to a modern gas fireplace
from Zed-Air Heating & Air Conditioning Inc. “We’ve gone with stone
and river rocks rather than the traditional log fireplace,” notes Knoester.
Grey laminate flooring from Floorsource Inc., gives the look of
hardwood without the tricky upkeep, and flows into an eating area that
can accommodate up to 14 guests. A colourful abstract painting by London
artist Greg Benz complements the modern dining table with green sling
back chairs from EQ3 Modern Living London. Continued on page 22

additional touches of glamour.
BELOW: The covered back deck
sensibly offers sun protection while
adding architectural interest to the
home’s casual outdoor living space.
Grey tile flooring from Greco Tile Ltd. is used to delineate a distinct
kitchen area. A raised centre island easily accommodates bar stools,
turning the whole area into an entertainment space. Slate grey cabinets
from Distinctive Kitchens of London, stainless steel appliances and
a fabulous stainless-steel tile backsplash complete the contemporary,
urban look.
A large, covered deck comes as a standard feature in all Artisan homes,
says Knoester, and comfortably holds an outdoor sofa set.
Three light-filled bedrooms are upstairs on the second floor. The
master retreat features a roomy walk-in closet and spa-inspired en
suite bathroom with a freestanding tub and walk-in shower. The
fourth bedroom, which can act as an extra living room, thanks to a tray
ceiling that was made possible by clever ductwork placement, and a full
bathroom are found downstairs in the finished basement.
Located north of Fanshawe Park Rd., east of Highbury, many
homebuyers see Fanshawe Ridge as London’s last frontier. “It’s really close
to the city, without being in it,” says Masschelein.
The neighbourhood’s easy access to the highway is also proving to be
a draw, he adds. And while all the amenities of city life are only minutes
away, the large lot sizes and proximity to nature give the area a rural feel.
“The person who comes here wants to be in the country but still live in
the city,” he says. OH

Singing the praises of the lowly
c
Not only at home
on the ground,
a living wall of
mature, entangled
groundcovers can
rival the beauty of
a tapestry.
Considering groundcovers are often in the forefront of garden beds everywhere, it
seems little praise is given to these tough, tiny plants.
Groundcovers can add a whole new dimension of colour to your garden
through their foliage, texture and abundant bloom. Many, with their
trailing nature, can soften hard stonework when tucked in crevices, or be
encouraged to spill down the front of retained beds giving an “aged” feel.
Groundcovers can also help retain slopes and discourage weed growth.
Some are so strong that they can act as a lawn or path substitution. Read
on to discover more.
Melanie’s Plant Picks:
Stonecrop (sedum) – There are so many lovely trailing varieties of the
sedum family that I cannot pick just one! The fleshy, succulent leaves of
this little plant often look like a flower. It comes in a variety of foliage and
bloom colours, plus it’s drought tolerant and happy in lean soil. Bees and
hummingbirds love them and the presence of pollinators is an important
indicator of a healthy garden. Stonecrop favours sun but will tolerate
partial shade. My favourites are:
Angelina (Sedum rupestre) – This spiky evergreen variety offers bright golden
foliage and turns orange in fall, with yellow flowers in early summer.
Dragon’s Blood (Sedum spurium) – This well-loved stonecrop is a semi-evergreen

specimen with rich reddish foliage and bright pink blooms in late summer.
Bronze Carpet (Sedum spurium) – This showy stonecrop sports brilliant
bronze red semi-evergreen foliage with flattering pink flowers.
Miniature Stonecrop (Sedum requieni) – This miniature stonecrop is a tiny
leafed evergreen sedum and is the only one that tolerates foot traffic. It
forms a dense mat with tiny white flowers and is extremely hardy.
Creeping Phlox (Phlox subulata) – Dense and low growing, this softlooking plant is a prolific bloomer! It’s covered in small purple, pink,
white or variegated flowers in spring, with short, stiff evergreen foliage.
This low-maintenance perennial prefers sun/part sun and is accepting
of lean soils.
Golden Scotch Moss (Sagina subulata) – Very dense and low growing, this
mounding evergreen perennial, with tiny star-like white flowers in spring,
boasts attractive chartreuse foliage. It tolerates foot traffic easily but its
shallow root system requires steady watering to thrive. It prefers part shade.
Hens and Chicks (Sempervivum) – I like all varieties of this drought
tolerant succulent. Their rosettes display dazzling progressive colour
changes throughout the season. They favour full sun to bring out their

rich colour. Sempervivums will bloom after the second or third year. An
odd looking flower stalk will shoot up from the centre of the main rosette
with a cluster of flowers. After the flower dies, gently twist off the stalk.
The main rosette has put on new offsets that will fill in.
Cranesbill (Geranium Bloody) – Of the many variations of the Cranesbill
family, my absolute favorite variety is Bloody, which, to me, is one of the
best Cranesbill introductions ever. It bears handsome dark green foliage
with happy, upright clusters of bright violet-purple, cup-shaped flowers.
Bloom period begins in early summer and continues on throughout the
garden season. It likes sun to part shade.
Creeping Jenny/Moneywort (Lysimachia nummularia or Golden Creeping
Jenny) – Creeping Jenny is accused of being an aggressive perennial,
however the Goldilocks variety is restrained in habit. It is ideal to combat
soil erosion or on rock walls and tolerates lean soil. Preferring full sun to
part shade, its yellow-green foliage makes a bright statement when paired
with common greens typically found in the garden. The name “wort”
suggests medicinal use; it was used by early English herbalists to heal
superficial wounds of both man and serpents. It was also used for ulcers,
scurvy, hemorrhages and ailments of the lungs.
cranesbill
creeping jenny
Dianthus (Dianthus) – Dianthus range in colour from pink, to red, to white
flowers with notched petals and finely textured leaves. Sweet Williams
(Dianthus barbatus) are larger and are biennial or short-lived perennials
covered with bicolour flowers in late spring. Pinks are low-growing,
low-care dianthus suitable for rock gardens with happy open-face flowers
and attractive grey-green foliage. Dianthus prefers full sun and won’t
stand wet soils.
Creeping Thyme Elfin or Minus (Thymus praecox Elfin or Minus) – This tiny
gem has gorgeous miniature flowers and compact leaves. This is another
“walk upon” plant and when trod on will let go its thymey scent – plus
it’s edible! It favours full sun and tolerates lean soil.
A host of mature, entangled groundcovers can rival the beauty of
a tapestry. But be careful to consider the aggressive habit of many and
choose the right plant for the right environment. Groundcovers are not
only at home in the applications mentioned – consider planting a “mini”
garden in a planter or two. Children love this pint-sized forest idea, or
dare I say living wall. Perhaps it’s just the thing to take a ho-hum exterior
wall to a front-and-centre showpiece! OH

For the empty-nester crowd, the hunt is
on. Wanted? Easy-to-look-after main level
living spaces with finished lower levels to
accommodate visiting family and, of course,
the grandkids. Also on the checklist are many
special features and upgrades that wouldn’t
normally have been be afforded earlier in life
when hockey, dance lessons and university
educations drained their wallets.
Enter Gentrac Homes, an established builder and developer from
Tillsonburg, spreading its wings to London. Gentrac is helping an evergrowing number of baby boomers to downsize their space and upsize
their style.
In Sifton Properties Ltd.’s north London Woodholme Park, Gentrac
has recently opened a luxury model with approximately 2,500 sq. ft. of
living space, featuring three bedrooms, three bathrooms, and a partlyfinished lower level. Working together with architectural designer
Bryan Moore of Orchard Design Studio Inc., Gentrac’s president John
Gilvesy says the home’s exterior makes a “soft English” statement. When
travelling, Gilvesy enjoys filing away ideas for Gentrac’s future use.
He adds that the original Woodholme estate home, which still stands

nearby, also inspired the Gentrac exterior. It features narrower-thanusual windows with simulated divided lights (Golden Windows Ltd.),
dormer, authentically scaled shutters, roof lines reminiscent of what you
might see in the English countryside and symmetrical landscaping by In
Bloom Designscapes.
Starting at the front entryway, classic style transitions from the ledged
Arriscraft shadow stone (Schut’s Unit Step and Dyck’s Masonry
Contracting) and board and batten façade (Hardie Panel, installed by
Exteriors X Design) to the spacious foyer. Here, there are clear views
to the great room beyond, as well as the open stairway to the lower
level (Swain Custom Carpentry Inc.). While it makes a traditional
statement, the layout is open and functional, and includes important
elements of sophistication such as the rich, neutral colour palette
(Limited Edition Painting & Decorating Inc.). The interior ceilings,
vaulted, coffered and tray-style, range from nine to 12 feet.
The formal dining area opens off the foyer. With no walls to restrict
table size, it’s a space that can accommodate both large and intimate
dinner parties, says John’s wife and partner Sandra Gilvesy. She selected
the home’s finishes and fixtures, such as the dining room’s fabric shade
chandelier of polished nickel and crystal (J.D. Lighting and Pro Electric
Inc.). Kate Gielen of Gielen Design says she wanted to complement the
chandelier’s wow factor with strong transitional pieces including the
large round dining table, fabric covered chairs, sideboard with a framed
wall-mounted mirror and a mirrored chest of drawers. Continued on page 34

The open, airy great room is anchored by a dry stack stone fireplace
surround that features a rustic wood beam the Gilvesys salvaged from the
barn on their farm, and custom built-in cabinets on either side (Brent
Woods Carpentry Design). To match the weight of the fireplace wall,
Gielen opted for lots of texture, such as the weathered two-piece china
cabinet and casual seating. “I wanted the furniture here to be comfortable,
classic and not finely finished,” she says.
Sandra says every new Gentrac model sends her out and about in
search of unique fixtures such as the two large, clear glass pendant-style
lights with Edison bulbs above the counter separating the great room
from the kitchen work area. “I don’t like anything ornate,” she says. “I
prefer simple elegance.”

The master bedroom and en suite, as well as another full bathroom
and a den-cum-guest room, round out the home’s main level. The master
suite offers both luxurious and practical features such as the lovely tray
ceiling, spacious en suite with Victoria & Albert freestanding soaker tub
(Brouwer Plumbing & Heating), custom designed vanity with ceilingheight mirror (London Glass & Mirror Inc.), as well as a big walk-in
closet with Classica built-ins (County Heritage Forest Products Ltd.).
The street-facing den makes an ideal home office or quiet reading room
and is cleverly furnished with a desk that flips up to accommodate a
pull-out sofa bed for guests. They, as well as visiting family members, will
also enjoy entertainment or games in the comfortable finished lower level.
Bells and whistles throughout the home include a built-in audio
system (London Audio), in-floor heating beneath oversized Casa Roma
tiles, a towel warmer in the master bathroom, Caml-Tomlin Flow glass
shower doors, designer Kohler fixtures, rain shower heads, wide gothic
trim, Lauzon’s hickory wood flooring, vintage carriage house garage doors
by Garaga (Sofalvi Door Systems) and Driftwood Ultra High Definition
shingles (Haines Roofing).
Banks of windows and doors on the back walls of the house shed abundant
natural light throughout the main level. However, Gilvesy says that with
low-e and argon-filled glazing and upgraded insulation, Gentrac does not
compromise on energy efficiency. He adds that Gentrac’s Energy Star home
includes an upgraded high-efficiency furnace and water heater, fully ducted
HRV (Builders Choice) and a drain-water heat recovery system.
The Gilvesys worked to save two mature trees flanking the corners
of their model. Chopping them down was not an option. That wouldn’t
quite seem like the Gentrac or Sifton way. Instead, the gentrified gesture
to keep the trees most certainly is. And that’s not surprising in the
context of English craftsman-style architecture, landscapes, and of course,
historic Woodholme. OH
A single-storey home’s wide foundation enables a very
roomy lower level, ideal for visiting family and friends. In this
home, an open stairway connects the main level with the
cosy, carpeted lower level where there is a family room as
well as a bedroom, full bath, and storage areas.

good taste
By Tonia Wilson-Vuksanovic
Summer is here,
let’s learn about beer
One
of the prerequisites
to becoming a sommelier is
a great love and understanding
of wine, and I have been having a
full-blown affair with the beloved
drink for many years now. So this is why
I always feel a tinge of guilt when I openly
praise the many delightful virtues of
beer drinking. Beer is brilliant on so
many levels, and I have to admit,
it sometimes brings me more
joy than wine.
I have to start by saying that I’m not talking
about the mass-market lagers that are pretty
much all the same beer housed in different
packaging. Instead, I am talking about beers
that are made to be distinctive, interesting and
typical to the styles that they represent – beers
that command a moment to acknowledge
what’s in the glass. On the topic of glasses, if
you’re drinking a quality beer, pour it into a
glass to maximize your enjoyment, it allows
all the wonderful aromas to be enjoyed. The
experience is similar to how wine’s volatile
aromas travel up and out from the open mouth
of a wine glass.
Many of the interesting beers on the
market (but not all) will be found in
individual bottles, or perhaps in a case of six
and many are produced by microbreweries or
craft brewers.
I find most of my beer at the local wine
store. One of the great things about trying
new beers is that you can try two or more beer
styles in one sitting. For under $10 you can
experience some real taste sensations. Great
beer, like great wine has wonderful aromatics
and flavours but is enjoyed for a fraction of the
price. You can also indulge more because the
alcohol content is almost always lower than
that of wine.
Let’s have a quick beer-making lesson to
understand why beers taste as they do.
Beer is made of four things:
1. Water, which eventually becomes the beer
2. Malted Barley or Malt, which is
produced by soaking barley grains and then
letting them germinate (or sprout). They are
44
o u r h o m e s
s u m m e r

then dried and ready to be toasted. The level
of toasting will dictate the eventual colour
and flavour of the beer. For example, a lightly
toasted malt could be for a pilsner and a
dark-roasted malt (which is almost black) will
give a stout or porter its desired rich, dark
colour and distinguishing mocha aroma.
3. Yeast, which ferments the malt’s sugar
into alcohol.
4. Hops, which are the flower buds from
a climbing vine, and have been used for
centuries to impart aroma, flavour and
bitterness to beer. The hops are added to the
beer to give the desired qualities to the end
product. For example, an India Pale Ale (IPA)
will traditionally be higher in hop flavours
(thus more bitter) than an Abbey Ale, which
is rounded and soft. There are many different
varieties of hops, and brewers will choose
their favourites depending on the style they
are trying to create.
Simply put, the water is boiled with the
malt so that the malt imparts colour and
flavour. The liquid is then strained from the
solids. The yeast and hops are then added to
the liquid (or wort). The fermentation process
begins and alcohol and bubbles are created.
This is an oversimplified description but you
get the idea.
All beers are one of two styles – either ales
or lagers, which is determined by the yeast
that make them. Ale yeasts are used in warmer
conditions, and tend to create beers with more
aromatics. Lager yeasts are allowed to ferment
under cooler conditions, which produce a
crisper, fresher style of beer.
Now, here’s a beer primer to get you
started to a summer full of great taste
experiences involving a handful of
my favourite beer styles and beers.

Pet Cleanup? We’ve got you Covered!
While our beloved pets are many times our “best friends”, we all
need to admit they do sometimes have some shortcomings.
The Early Months:
Accidents happen during those younger days known as the
break-in period. Things we don’t normally put on our carpets or floors
well…leak onto them from time
to time. It’s during those early
days that an owner’s love and
attention turn those occasional
leaks into victories. Enter Urine
Erase or the all-natural array
of Clean and Green or Fresh
Wave Products. From Pee to Poo to a good old-fashioned Skunking,
McHardy’s have the solutions to take care of those special needs.
Maintenance:
Let’s face it…great relationships take maintenance and a lot of
love to work. Enter the lineup of pet specific brushes, cleaners, carpet
shampooers and vacuum cleaners and McHardy Vacuum has the
maintenance half of those great relationships covered. Just throw in
the Love and you’re set.
Maturity:
As hair fills and in turn falls out, so goes that predictable yet
unfortunate cycle, shedding and aging. This cycle can leave our carpets,
couches and floors well…a little messy! Enter the Bagless Dyson Animal
or Miele Cat & Dog vacuums. Deep cleaning Power Nozzles, pet specific
tools and extra powerful motors give us “best friend” owners the upper
hand in the unending quest of cleaning pet hair.

Reasons to start Natural Cleaning today
Tip #1 Cleaning made easy. It’s much easier to have a few
products that take care of your general cleaning needs than a
whole arsenal of toxic products. For
example, vinegar can easily replace
mold and mildew removers, window
cleaners, all-purpose cleaners, toilet
bowl cleaners and more. So, you
can often tackle multiple cleaning
jobs in your home without switching
products as you clean! Plus, you don’t
have to worry about getting bleach
stains on your clothes or accidentally mixing dangerous chemicals
together as you clean, when you go green! — at Over Clean.
Over Clean offers Eco-friendly household cleaning on a weekly,
bi-weekly, monthly or occasional basis.
We manufacture many of our own cleaning products from
simple, natural products to protect your health and home.

Saucy Smoky BBQ Pork Ribs

Saucy Smoky
T
To me, ribs are the
ultimate summer food.
I mean, we’re already
eating outdoors – why
not make it messy? On
rib nights at my house,
I cover the picnic table
with paper, throw
down a heaping
platter of these ribs,
a pile of napkins, a
bowl of coleslaw, some
fluffy dinner buns and
we dig in! And if this
scene doesn’t evoke

what does!

CAN’T STAND THE HEAT?
GET OUT OF THE KITCHEN…
• Too hot to bake the ribs first? Grill the
ribs over indirect heat instead. The timing
will be approximately the same, but your
kitchen won’t overheat. For indirect
grilling, place the ribs over a portion of
the grill that is not lit or heated. In a gas
grill, achieve this by lighting only a few of
the burners — in a charcoal grill, by piling
the coals to one side of the grill. Be sure to
place a drip tray below the ribs to catch the
fat and prevent flare-ups.
Ribs do take a while to become
tender, but so many steps along the
way can be done in advance. The day
before you plan to serve them, rub the
ribs with the spices and marinate, and
make the sauce. In fact, the sauce can be
made up to five days ahead. The sauce
is equally delicious on chicken, steaks,
burgers, chops – you name it!
While you may want to experiment
with other sauce/rub flavours through
the summer, perhaps even the meat
(beef ribs are a treat too!), this one is
a total classic – saucy, smoky, a little
sweet and may truly be the only rib
recipe you’ll need all summer!

comes to mind when we think of cooked
ribs. However, technically, if the meat is

likely over cooked. A perfectly cooked rack
of ribs is very, very tender but should still be
clinging to the bone. The best way to test
doneness is to insert a toothpick into the
thickest part of the meat. If it pokes in and
removes with ease, the meat ribs are done.
Be sure to check each rack individually as
each one is a little different.
CHIP APPEAL
• If using a gas grill, consider adding wood
chips to achieve the natural smoky flavour
that’s inherent in a charcoal grill. Follow
the manufacturer’s instructions for using
the wood chips, as each gas grill will have
different specifications.
• Smoky BBQ sauce: In saucepan,
heat oil over medium heat; cook
onion and garlic until softened

sauce, paprika and salt. Simmer,

An herb garden is a delicious way to keep
your body, mind and cooking healthy. Since
herbs don’t need pesticides to keep critters
away, tending to your herb garden is easy,
fun and organic.
We’ve put together three creative ways to make a simple
herb garden for your back porch, window or wall.
1.Reuse old mason jars on old barn board for a shabby chic wallhanging garden. Mark the spots you want your plants to hang from
with chalk. Using screws, attach metal pipe clamps to the board.
Insert jars and tighten clamps. Fill jars with rock and soil. Plant herbs.
Affix chalkboard labels.
Materials: Mason jars, rocks, potting soil,
screws, herbs, screwdriver/drill, barn board,
metal pipe clamps, chalk, chalk labels.
2.Create a simple window garden
with recycled cans. Use rocks to
create a little bed at the bottom of
each can. Fill with soil and transplant
your herbs. Label with a paper tag,
attach with twine.
Materials: Recycled cans, rocks,
potting soil, screws, herbs, paper
tags, twine and marker.
3.Plant your herbs in individual
pockets of a hanging cotton shoe
organizer. Fill each pocket with
moisture retaining soil. Make cute
labels from scrapbooking paper and
plastic nametag covers.
Materials: Hanging cotton shoe
organizer, potting soil, herbs, paper
or labels, marker, plastic nametag
covers with pins.

TIPS:
• Fill your containers one inch below the
top with moisture-rich potting soil.
•If potting containers aren’t breathable,
then make a rock bed at the bottom
to help drain excess water. Only a
half-inch of rock is needed.
• For the shoe organizer garden, place
a small plant underneath to catch water
run-off. Water the plants from top to
bottom, creating a waterfall effect.
•Use wide-mouth mason jars for large
pre-grown herbs. OH
