This article by Ray Schooler who writes for the Ozarks Mountaineer was published in the Arkansas Democrat Sunday Magazine on February 18, 1962. He ponders the problem of what to call people who live in the Ozark Mountains. Our great region is variously spoken of by such names as the Ozark Mountains, the Ozark Hills, the Ozark Dome, the Ozark Plateau, and the Ozark Uplift. This provides a pleasant variety and makes for no particular confusion. There is general agreement that the simplest and by far the most common usage is just “the Ozarks.” Agreement ceases, however, and confusion reigns when the question arises as to what to call the people. If you live in the Ozarks, are you an Ozarker? Or are you an Ozarkian? Perhaps you are an Ozarkie. If you are not sure what you are, try on some of the following for size: Ozarker, Ozarkier, Ozarkeer, Ozarkian and Ozarkite. Now try them again retaining an “s.” This gives us: Ozarkser, Ozarksier, Ozark- seer, Ozarksan, Ozarksian and Ozarksite. You can see what effects are possible by varying the stress on different syllables. You can also invent your own variants. It has all the makings of a grand parlor game.
