The term began with our very excited Art/ Media staff team and students moving into our purpose built Art Studios in what was the old Resource Centre space. Although the verandah and furniture were not in place when everyone moved it is still a very inspirational space that we know will host many exciting events in the future. In Week 2 and 3 the new furniture began arriving while the new Media rooms will be ready for classes later this term. The Celebration Assembly and the Open Day Events were other highlights of the first five weeks of Term 2. In Week 2 we congratulated our students who had achieved grade point averages of ‘A+’ or ‘A’ across all their subjects. Our award recipients are listed on pages 3 & 4. Time constraints meant that we had to limit the recognition to 10 – 20 students per year level and so we needed to acknowledge the remainder of our academic award winners at Sub School assemblies. In our future Celebration Assemblies we also highlight the Open Day Events began with an Information Night focussed on our specialist programs: IGNITE and International Baccalaureate Diploma. Over 300 people attended the Year 12 Centre to hear Denise Rule present an excellent inaugural public address as IGNITE teacher-leader with an enthusiastic and articulate group of IGNITE students. Mark Grantham IB Coordinator provided details about the IB program then engaged three of our senior students in a question and answer session about their IB experiences. Audience members had the opportunity to speak with school leaders after the presentations. On the following day over 500 people packed the gym to hear the Principal’s Address and then to participate in student-led tours of the school in action. Unlike many other schools we don’t present special programs for Open Day as we think the most important thing for prospective families to see is the normal functioning of the school and to hear our students talking about their perspectives. Feedback from visitors who attended the sessions has been very positive. The excitement continued when the Art classes moved out of the upstairs rooms and the builders moved in to start the refurbishment that will see three new Science labs opened at the start of next term. Sub School teams have also met with the very small handful of students who scored two or more ‘D’ or ‘E’ grades and their families. The aim is for every Glenunga student to achieve ‘A’, ‘B’ or ‘C’ results – given the experience and expertise of the Glenunga staff, the school culture of learning and the school Value of ExcellencePB. We are all very excited that our architect Craig Tonkin from Studio 9 has completed the conceptualisation of a Glenunga Grounds Master Plan and is now ready to consult with students, staff and the community through the Governing Council. Craig’s plans provide students with the shelter, water and comfortable seating and eating areas that they have been seeking for decades. Then the challenge will be how the school will fund this important aspect of the redevelopment. We really appreciated the fact that most families understood the importance of giving up precious time in their busy schedules to accompany their students to the interviews. This enabled the discussion to focus on the partnership between school and family for the purpose of getting the best outcomes possible for the student and to ensure that every student is progressing at an appropriate rate. Student Learning - Interviews Another important aspect of supporting each student to achieve is the DayMap Portal which enables families and students to see Year 8 – 11 homework typed in by subject teachers; student attendance; Assessment Schedules that show the key assessment tasks and their due dates for all students’ subjects; and as assessment tasks are marked grades appear in real time on the portal. This means families always have at their fingertips the deadlines and the grades so they can see their student’s progress in real time. One of our important school Values is Excellence defined in terms of every student achieving their personal best. In order to create a learning environment where this Value is delivered: • students and staff engage in extensive feedback processes • staff are involved in challenging professional learning • staff are involved in data analysis and follow up action. As part of our commitment to this Value we have also restructured our interview system so that we see all students and their families. Then we follow up with students who need additional support because they are not making the best use of the advantages offered by a school like Glenunga. In the last week of Term 1 2014 1423 students in Year 8–11 and their families met with their Home Group teachers to reflect on their start to the academic year including their strengths and areas for development as well as to set goals for the remainder of the semester. Year 12 students met with their Student Advisor teachers and in many cases their families to reflect on the Study Plan they established at the start of the year and what improvements were needed. Although this was a very big investment of school resources we know that the more students reflect on their learning and set specific short term goals the more their outcomes improve. Then in Week 2 of this term interviews were conducted with subject teachers, 789 students and their families related to results in Term 1 reports that were ‘C-‘, ‘D’ or ‘E’ grades or any student who was not achieving their personal best. The purpose of these invitational interviews was to support students to understand what they needed to do differently and what support from school and home would be beneficial. A number of appointments were also been conducted at alternative times to better match family commitments. 2 Student Learning – DayMap Portal If you have any queries about the technical aspects of the portal please contact our Senior Leader Sherif Soliman on sherif.soliman@gihs.sa.edu.au Student Learning – Student Free Day Another important aspect of supporting student learning is teacher professional learning that happens on Student Free Days as well as during our Wednesday morning late start and our team meetings on Monday and Wednesday after school. On our Student Free Day in Week 3 staff teams critiqued a paper on Personalised Learning for 21st Century Learners developed by Peter Kuss Director of Studies. The nature of secondary teaching is changing dramatically with the intelligent use of technology to enrich face to face teaching. The aim of the paper was to capture this change and to support teachers to better understand how to build and use Virtual Learning Environments effectively. Once consensus is achieved that the paper does describe what all teachers aspire to deliver in their classrooms it will then be used as a touchstone for teachers’ reflection on their performance and for feedback from students. Staff teams also examined the Glenunga Principles of Learning developed by all staff in 2013 to see if they captured the changing context. After morning tea staff prepared for the International Baccalaureate Diploma review which is due in November 2014. Later they worked on the implementation of the Australian Curriculum particularly the Achievement Standards and the fit with SACE and IB. We have another Student Free Day on 20 June 2014 where we will be working with consultants from the Teaching for Effective Learning team to bring together all the component parts of a state of the art school wide pedagogy to ensure all students have equity of educational opportunity. We are very grateful to our community for their support of our professional learning time that enables us to keep improving student learning. Student Learning - Concerns In our community of 1600 students and over 100 staff the teaching styles of teachers and learning styles of students usually match really well. Occasionally there may be some difficulties. If you have any concerns about your son or daughter’s progress particularly when you use the information from the Portal please email the subject teacher and arrange a time to meet. If you are concerned about several subjects or wellbeing issues then please contact the Sub School Leader or a member of our counselling staff – Natasa Penna or Simon Illingworth. If the concerns are serious then we invite you to contact the Executive Leader for the year level. The important thing is to let us know quickly so that we can work with you to resolve the situation. If there is a concern about teacher quality please contact me on wendy.johnson@gihs.sa.edu NAPLAN Last week our Year 9s were involved in NAPLAN, which is one of the many ways we get information about the support or extension needs of our students. Our Year 9 Leader Kristy Lock rang every family whose student who was absent from the tests to ensure that families understood the catch up day was on Friday our Student Free Day. It is this dedication that demonstrates how much Glenunga staff are committed to every student having every opportunity to be successful. We use our NAPLAN data to inform English and Maths teachers about individual student needs and to ensure we are covering the curriculum appropriately. We also track students who have scored at or just above the national minimum standard and also those students who have performed in the highest bands to ensure that their performance in Year 10 – 12 is supported and appropriately extended. This data is showing very consistent results for our high band students and our students who needed support are almost all achieving at ‘C’ grade or above in SACE. The recabling and earthquake bracing are continuing: it is anticipated that the builders’ work will be complete by the end of this term. Come Out Children’s Festival Poster Competition 2015 Winner Congratulations to Year 10 student Alinda Tunc whose graphic design has won this State-wide competition. The competition judges were delighted with Alinda’s clever, gentle, beautiful, illustrative interpretation of the 2015 Come Out Festival theme of Building Bridges. Her prize is a $500 gift voucher from a computer store of choice and the opportunity to observe the Come Out Children’s Festival graphic designer Adrian Cowell who will work on Alinda’s image to finalize the festival’s promotional materials. Alinda will be credited as creator of the original image of the festival poster, final program and teachers’ resource. Commendation also goes to the eight other Year 10 Visual Arts / Design students whose competition entries were acknowledged for their creative interpretations of the theme. As part of his prize he will be travelling to Portland, Oregon where his film will compete against other winners from Australia and the United States. It is hoped that the cookbook will reflect the International status of the school. The FRC will be asking you for your recipe ideas in the next few weeks. Any funds raised this year will go towards landscaping the area that will be left when all the building works have finally been completed. This will include some shaded areas for students to sit. The landscaping will be a long term project but the FRC also hope to fund some short term projects and will be talking to staff and students for ideas. If you would like to be involved in any fundraising projects or just have any ideas to pass on please contact Val Barr val-barr@hotmail.co.uk or Kay Johnston kayjohn62@bigpond.com Val Barr Governing Council The end of the first term saw the Prefects tackle the task of presenting the Student Survey findings to over one hundred Glenunga teaching staff. In an action packed forty minute session the Prefects presented short speeches on various aspects of the survey including the use of technology to enrich students’ learning, the most frequently occurring teaching practices and the students’ view on the malleability of intelligence. The speeches were broken up by forums of discussion amongst teachers that were facilitated by the Prefects and the responses were then collated and used to draw decisive actions. For the Prefects the switching of roles between students and teachers was a unique experience. The ability to provide teachers with feedback on the different aspects of education is invaluable for the continuous improvement of learning at Glenunga. The presentation also provided the Prefects with an opportunity to thank the teachers for their passion and dedication in making Glenunga not only a leader in 21st Century Education but also a brilliant place to be a student. The Head Prefects have now begun developing the Student Survey Brochure which will highlight key findings in the survey and communicate it in a precise and concise way. The brochure will be available to the public at its completion. The start of the second term has seen the commencement of many new projects amongst student leadership groups. As part of Glenunga’s continuing emphasis on the school 4 Values the Student Forum have started the task of defining the value of Opportunity U and how it is delivered at our school. The definition will take into consideration input from different aspects of the school community. As part of Glenunga’s strong association with International students the International Captain and Prefect are looking at improving the Wellbeing of International Students by increasing the frequency by which they communicate with the rest of the student body. By examining International Students’ academic performance and involvement in extracurricular activities, assistance will be able to be implemented before potential issues arise. Glenunga recently hosted its annual Open Day. Around seventy student leaders were trained by the School Tours team to have an in-depth knowledge of the opportunities and strengths of our school. Close to five hundred people visited Glenunga throughout the day with the tours being conducted for forty-five minutes each. The School Tours provide us with the opportunity to highlight Glenunga’s many assets and to also promote public school education. As a group we look forward to completing our desired goals and outcomes in what will be an undoubtedly busy term for all. Kershlin Krishna Head Prefect Senior School – Semester 1 Exams At the end of this term all Year 10-12 students will have mid-year exams to complete. These exams provide an important opportunity for students to practise the skills required to revise a block of learning and to perform under the pressure of time and exam conditions. The information below outlines the exam details. Year 10 Year 10 subjects that lead to a Year 11 subject with an exam component will have an exam up to 90 minutes in length. Year 10 subjects that do not lead to a Year 11 subject with an exam component can set a Practical Assessment up to 2 hours in length (i.e. a practical activity or oral presentation completed under the supervision of the subject teacher). Week 10 is Work Experience Week for all Year 10 students so all lessons are cancelled. Some Year 10 students are doing a Year 11 subject with an exam. We will attempt to schedule those exams in Week 9 if possible so that students do not have a clash with their Work Experience. • Last day of Year 10 lessons – Thursday 19 June. • Year 10 SWOTVAC – Friday 20 June (Student Free Day). • Week 9 – Exams and Practical Assessments only (no lessons). Year 10 and Year 11 students will be able access their timetable for Semester 2 via Daymap once the school holidays have begun. No printed timetables will be issued so students will need to print out their own copy. Middle School OpportunityU is an important School Value. Middle School students are provided with many ways to demonstrate this value. Student Leadership is one such opportunity. Students in Year 8 and 9 are encouraged to apply for Student Leadership roles at the beginning of the year. Interested students complete a written application providing details about how they meet the school Values, why student leadership is important to them and the attributes they possess that would make them a good leader. Applicants are then invited to attend a brief interview where they are given the opportunity to talk about why they applied to be a Student Leader and what qualities they would bring to the position. Student Leaders are chosen on merit and hold the position for 12 months. Each Sub School also chooses 2-5 students from their group to represent them on the Student Forum. Student Leader Responsibilities: • Attend regular meetings with their Sub School Leader. • Discuss issues that are relevant to their Sub School. • Share the issues from Sub School meetings with the students in their Home Group class. 5 Being able to think on your feet and knowing the case well are both essential elements of a good cross examination and both of our barristers performed well. Year 8 Student Leaders After Vicki’s closing remarks we waited for the judge to hand down his decision. It was always going to be a tough task to prove our case beyond reasonable doubt as all witnesses had enjoyed a big night at the dinner and a lot of the evidence was hard to verify. In the future one of our Legal Eagles will surely be sitting in her chair and ruling on cases. Our students would like to thank Magistrate O’Connor and Education Officers Peter Cavouras and Penny Cavanagh for facilitating this opportunity. Each team can access a practising lawyer to help prepare the students and we are very lucky to have Carla Scragg who has provided invaluable help to the students. (Jamie) Mal Quorn-Smith - Humanities Peter Kuss Director of Studies Round 1 The Mock Trial Competition is run by the Law Society of South Australia who provides the cases and the judges. For the first round this year we hosted St Mary’s College in a criminal trial. We were the prosecution in a case involving an assault on two men after a golf tournament and dinner. Our team of first time participants in Mock Trial worked hard at many lunchtime meetings to learn the skills of advocacy, court demeanour and court processes. St Mary’s made the final of the competition last year and such was their enthusiasm that they appeared for the trial with their whole Legal Studies class in support! Sheriff’s Officer Zahara Arhbal opened the court and barrister Yule Li presented the opening address for the prosecution. He called his first witness Glyn BoldockEliott our only Year 10 member and a keen student of legal matters. As the first assault victim Glyn performed well in examination in chief and in cross examination. Jamie Ling played the second golfer who had also been assaulted by the defendant. With Vicki Tang as his barrister he recalled his evidence almost perfectly and stood up well to an intense cross examination. The next task for our barristers supported by solicitors Stephan Koefer and Luke Barnett was to cross examine both defence witnesses, perhaps the most difficult of the challenges faced as we are never sure what answer a witness will give. 6 We had just watched him sentence a man under the influence of amphetamines for attacking two people with a meat cleaver and Judge Meucke was passionate in his message to students to avoid these drugs at all costs. Art students have had the opportunity to participate in many exciting performances, events and exhibitions this term. The IB Art students and the Year 10 Art 2D students visited the Dark Heart Exhibition at the Art Gallery of SA and had the opportunity to view art works by contemporary artists from all over the world. The Year 10 students also participated in a valuable workshop session where they were able to create their own concept in model form for an installation to suit the Dark Heart theme (see photo below). Other events included a hugely successful Mother’s Day performance at the Adelaide Zoo with the GIHS String Ensemble and an improvisational theatre performance by the Year 11 Drama class. The results for the 2014 KESAB Calendar competition was recently announced, a competition that many Year 10 Design students entered last year. Georgia Ruehlemann’s artwork was selected for a page in the 2014 calendar and she also won $100. Well done Georgia! Congratulations also to Year 10 Art Design student Alinda Tunc who won the Come Out Festival Design Competition for 2015! This is a fantastic achievement and we are all looking forward to seeing her design in use next year. Further details on these achievements and performances are outlined in the following articles. Jane Unsworth Arts Coordinator on behalf of the Arts Team As part of National Law Week students interested in the operations of the court system were invited to participate in another Mock Hearing at the Adelaide Magistrates Court. A group of Legal Studies students and members of the Mock Trial team presented prosecution and defence submissions in front of Magistrate Sue O’Connor. Students took turns as Magistrate’s Clerk, Police Prosecutor, Defence Solicitor and the accused person in cases ranging from minor assault to shoplifting after which Magistrate O’Connor delivered her sentence. Following the role plays she spoke of her career path and of the challenges of the magistrate’s position explaining that an increasing number of her cases involved the so called designer drugs or methamphetamines that leave people unable to control their behaviour and lead to violent altercations. A number of the students present had heard the same message in an address by the Chief Judge of the District Court in an earlier excursion where he had explained that up to 80% of his criminal cases involved illegal drugs. Arts Report Arts Report Ritika Garg Artin Arjomandi Vi-Seth Bak Daniel Rustia Sanjana Menon Finn Davies Lisa Nguyen Vasilia Ketses National Law Week Middle School Report cont. • Take items from the Home Group class back to Sub Term 2 has seen the Visual Arts and Media move into the new Arts Precinct – an exciting custom built space including 3 Art classrooms, a Digital Art room, Media room complete with a separate Green Room as well as a general open plan studio space intended for Year 11s and 12s to independently work on their art. This space is flexible and will be used for different teaching and learning opportunities as well as exhibitions. The first exhibition in the new space will be the launch of the Arts Precinct next term. This is already in the planning stage and will coincide with the SALA (South Australian Living Artists) Festival where we hope to invite past GIHS students who now work in the Arts Industry to participate in the exhibition. Each classroom has now been fitted with an Interactive Smart TV with a portable version in the Studio space. The Art classrooms are up and running with temporary furniture at this stage and we hope to have the Digital and Media rooms as well as the custom built kiln room fully functional later in the term. Year 11 Drama Performance Last term the amazingly talented Year 11 Drama class presented The Return of Freefall on L’’Estrange. Leo Club – Community Service – Linden Park Primary School Live Below the Line – Lock-in Event On our last Student Free Day some of our dedicated Leo Club students decided to give back to the local community by attending Linden Park Primary School. The students did a range of activities including: classroom support, playing games, gardening and cleaning up the school yard. Club Red Blood Drives Our Club Red Youth Ambassadors have been busily organising blood drives for the Red Cross Schools Challenge. Recently we held our first of many taking along a group of 8 girls. Anyone over the age of 16 years old can sign up, donate and potentially save 3 lives. Red Cross Calling - Fun Run String Ensemble Zoo Concert Last year our String Ensemble performed at the Adelaide Zoo on several occasions including the Zoo’s Centenary Celebrations. The group received excellent feedback from both the Zoo management and general public. As a result they were asked earlier this year to perform on Mother’s Day. On previous occasions the students performing in the ensemble gained free entry but parents were still required to pay to see their students perform. After some negotiation with the Zoo management I agreed to the group performing on the day as long as the mothers of the students involved were also given free entry. This was designed to give the mums a special treat on Mother’s Day and enable them to see how their years of nurturing, perseverance and encouragement had helped their children become fine musicians. I’m sure most mums would regard that as the best present of all. Despite it being such an important family day over thirty students turned up to perform on the day with their mothers and were very well received by the large audience who gathered in the rotunda to watch the performance. Later this year the String Ensemble will be performing in the Art Gallery of South Australia as part of the French International Music Festival and in the Festival Theatre as part of the Primary School Music Festival. Tim Jones Musical Director 8 Congratulations to Ariane Chu, Zhen Kok and Anais Giblot-Ducray for successfully running and organising the Red Cross Calling – Fun Run in Week 1. Students ran laps of the school oval and received sponsorship for each lap they completed. Some students pushed hard to complete five laps while others powered through for the cause hitting twenty laps! The final tally of funds raised will be out soon. A fantastic effort by all involved and special thanks to Sharon Wachtel for helping Ms Habel supervise on the day. World Vision Global Leaders Convention (GLC) Six students together with Ms Habel and Steph Seglenieks our CPSW attended the World Vision Global Leaders Convention. The students participated in a series of interactive workshops and spoke directly to a World Vision Volunteer direct from Rwanda and Youth Ambassadors. The students will participate in a Leadership Workshop in Week 6 to brain storm ideas on how they can help in the running of the 40 Hour Famine and promote the 20th Anniversary of the Genocide in Rwanda. Live Below the Line During Week 2 students from all year levels chose to participate in the Oaktree Foundations Live Below The Line Challenge. The challenge was for students to survive on $2 a day for five days which is the equivalent of the extreme poverty line. It’s a way to better understand extreme poverty while making a difference overseas. Live below the Line is a little unpredictable, sometimes challenging and always eye opening. Our students have raised over $3,500 online putting us currently in eighth place in the National Schools Challenge and will no doubt achieve over $5,000 once offline funds are club activities with the focus on the Amnesty Refugee and Asylum Seeker Rights campaign. The club will be holding a movie viewing to help raise awareness showing Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea and Mary Meets Mohammad. To mark the end of the Live Below The Line Challenge Year 12 students Jasmine Walker and Vy Tran coordinated a lock-in event with Ms Habel. The event kicked off at 6pm on Friday evening with a shared dinner costing 50 cents per student, games, movies and a badminton tournament. On Saturday morning the students again braved the cold wintery weather preparing 300 pancakes for a shared breakfast. Well done to everyone involved. Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea is a 52 minute documentary looking at the circumstances and decisions that lead someone to become a boat person. Mary Meets Mohammad follows the arrival of Tasmania’s first detention centre through the eyes of local Christian woman and knitting club member Mary and Muslim Afghan Hazara asylum seeker Mohammad who is detained inside the centre as they connect through the gift of a knitted beanie. Model United Nations (MUN) Club Afterschool debates The MUN Club has continued to run afterschool debates in Term 2 after the success of several in Term 1. The debates are a great opportunity for students with a strong interest in International Law and politics to debate current topics in a UN Security Council format. Students from all year levels participate sharing their skills and knowledge and making new friends. There’s always plenty of fun and laughter. Australian Refugee Association (ARA) Youth Ambassadors Congratulations to Jen Ngo, Ella Obst, Jing Ma, Halima Nalaye and Himali Wijeratne who have been selected to be ARA Youth Ambassadors for our school in 2014. Well done to the following students on two fantastic performances: Ms Stefan-Rasmus took her Year 10 World of Food class on an excursion that explored Greek and Italian Cuisine. The class was undertaking the study of postWorld War II immigration and how the Greek and Italian migrants have contributed to the vibrant and unique Australian culture and cuisine that is now multicultural. This excursion allowed them to experience the rich and different cultural cuisine of Greece and Italy. The class went to Mondinetti an Italian Cafe on Henley Beach Road at Torrensville. They had a delicious and traditional five meal course including Occhi di Lupo (vegetarian soup) and a Ragu Penne (beef-based pasta). Domenic the owner and chef of Mondinetti discussed regional cuisines with the students and explained the history of the Magheritta Pizza which was also on the menu. After the filling and enjoyable lunch the class walked down the road to the Greek pastry cafe called Kalymnos. He also explained the use of traditional ingredients in the baking of Greek desserts. The class indulged themselves in sweet and delicious treats and thoroughly enjoyed George’s talk about the history of Greek pastry in Adelaide. Potentially life changing story ahead… Our Athletics Team competed in the C1 division of the Secondary School Sport Interschool Athletics Carnival at Santos Stadium at Mile End. The team attained a staggering 58 First place finishes, 21 Second places and 15 Third places. At the end of the day’s competition we had won the Boys, Girls and Overall trophies. As a result of these terrific achievements the team has been promoted into the B2 division for 2015! Well done to all involved. MALVIKA HEMANTH – STATE BADMINTON OPEN GIRLS KO OUTDOOR 5ASIDE – WINNERS!! Congratulations to Year 10 student Malvika Hemanth who recently participated in the 2014 Badminton Under 19 Age Title for Girls Singles, Doubles and Mixed Doubles and emerged winner for Girls Singles and runner-up for both mixed and doubles. Our Open Girls Outdoor 5aside Soccer team played in the Southern Zone KO Competition at Pasadena High School. The team played several games in a Round Robin format against other schools in the Southern Zone. The girls played superbly all day and ended up defeating St Marys College 3 to 0 in the Grand Final. Malvika also represented South Australia at the June Bevan Tournament during the Easter Holiday break in Auckland New Zealand. She achieved her personal best of reaching Girls Singles Semi-Finals. Along with her mixed partner she won the plates mixed event. Malvika has been representing South Australia regularly for the last few years. Well done Malvika! The students were involved in a very challenging program involving various paddle skills, capsizing/ rescue procedures and a seven kilometre endurance morning session in sometimes cold and wet conditions. Instructors commented our student’s excellent attitude, resilience and the high quality displayed during the three days of assessment. 2014 Pedal Prix The 2014 Pedal Prix season is upon us and we have a group of enthusiastic students that have been training hard in the gym and at home to be prepared for the two 6 hour events. The tour would be based around some community work in the village of Kol Thmey which is close to the Temples of Angkor. There will also be other activities including sightseeing, recreational and some time for shopping. The precise nature of these activities will be part of the planning process that selected students will be involved with. During the course of this year we will be attempting to fundraise for our project and would expect that all participants would be actively involved in this. Costs are expected to be around $3,200-$3,800. Application forms are available from the school. A parent information night will be held on Monday 2 June at 6.00pm in the school gym.
