There were many heartfelt moments that members enjoyed together as Yacht Club family. Those of us who attended Thursday night dinner, were privy to an exciting occasion courtesy of beau Chris Haynor as he proposed to Ashleigh Banfield. Of course she said YES and the Haynor/Banfield/ Sawchyn/Lount clan hosted the best-ever engagement party, thank you for including us all in the celebration. Where else can one practice yoga and then dance the night away on the very same floor? The benefits of RLWYC membership never end! Friday morning there were no less than 5 distinct programs and activities occurring at the Club; every room, court, dock and sailboat was being put to good use. We really do have something for everyone. Speaking of community, on Saturday members gathered to support the Kenora community through the annual Lifesavers Dinner and Auction to raise funds for the Lake of the Woods District Hospital Foundation. When called to action, our members not only support the RLWYC, but the greater community where we reside during the summer months. The weekend concluded with our youngest members participating in classic Gymkhana games with a few new surprises added in for fun. These little tykes will be our future Yacht Club community, let’s teach them well. We were especially pleased to see Ted Parkhill's scow out for the first time this season, he made it a family affair by bringing along his brother Jeff and niece Ava and nephew Kingsley. The winds were light and shifty for our 1:15 start time, but the Race committee, led by James Tory, managed to get a course set and the scows started. The wind went soft with 1:30 to go to the start making it difficult to find boat speed. Sandy Riley (RL 45), Rob Aitken(M22) and Ted Parkhill(M16) got off well. RL 1, the boat I was on did not! The left side of the course was the place to be and RL 45 sailed very well and was first to the top mark by a considerable margin . I45(Lorne Hurst and Gestur Kristjannson) was also in the hunt as was M 16. Most boats went right on the downwind but in an effort to split Gybes and get into some different wind RL 1 gybed immediately. We did get into some different wind, very calm wind! I can't really report on what was happening with the fleet because we were so far behind and focused on getting out of the hole that we were in, that I wasn't really watching. Lorne and Gestur and Ted and Jeff should have been watching us, though! RL 1(Don Konantz) finally caught the breeze and had a good downwind. The wind continued to go soft and east and on the second upwind I 45 and M16 sailed into the hole that we had found earlier. Upwind escape was not so easy, I told you that they should have been watching! M22 took the high line to the left and managed to separate from RL 45. They should have been looking in their rear view mirrors though as Don Konantz stayed left and got the most out of the wind sailing above the mark then reaching down to it. the final downwind was a drag race with RL1 hard on the heels of RL45. Did the pressure get to them? RL 45 gybed at the mark, perhaps half a boat length too early. An unluck wave caused them the hit the mark just as RL 1 passed them to leeward after executing a very clean Mexican takedown. RL 45 did their 360 which in such light air is very costly. Rob Aitken and crew, fresh off of their impressive victory at LOWISA in very different conditions, sailed a very clean error free race and won handily. Don Konantz sailing with Willy and Tory had a shakey first half followed by some very solid sailing leading to a second place finish. Sandy Riley came in third, Ted Parkhill fourth followed by Lorne Hurst. The wind then completely died. Instead of running three races we were only able to have the one, so the Galt Cup goes to Rob Aitken, continuing his streak of winning every race that he has entered this season. Impressive! Rob and his crew as well as Sandy Riley and his crew are heading down to Lake Minnetonka in early September to compete in the ILYA E Scow championships. They will be sailing against 80 to 100 Scows. We wish them a safe and successful journey! In other sailing News, three of our junior sailors are attending the Manitoba Summer Games. Pictured here, James Heimbecker, John Nicolls and coach Hunter Kristjannson left for the opening ceremonies. They were joined by Bryn McConnell in Steinbach. Their racing starts on Monday August 8 on West Hawk Lake. Good luck racers! Next week's race is the McGlaughlin Power Puff where our female skippers will be showcasing their skills, so get out on the water and do some training! The sailing program is still in full swing so if you have not achieved you Cansail levels or if you have not been in a program this summer, make sure to get involved! See you on the water, Rod Nicolls www.rlwyc.ca 3 of 14 www.rlwyc.ca 807.543.2184 August 8, 2016 TENNIS NEWS Hi everyone! It has been another busy and successful week for the tennis program here at the yacht club. After having matches postponed in the junior tournament on Monday due to wet weather, we completed the semi-finals and finals on Wednesday afternoon and man did we have some good matches! SEE TENNIS IN PICTURES Congratulations to the winners of the day, Connor Douglas who won the Under 16’s and Ridley Gould who won the 10 and Under. Good job Amelia Fauth and Ryan McKee for making the finals, and thanks everyone for participating and supporting the yacht club juniors on the day. The Angie Ferguson was played on Saturday with 17 pairs competing for the coveted trophy that comes full of candy!! Keaton Hamin and his partner Angus Sutherland played Connor Douglas and his mom Jackie in the final congratulations to Connor and Jackie on their win and thanks to everyone for coming out. Now we have only one tournament left this year – the Ladies Doubles. This year I am going to try a different format for this tournament as it seemed to be successful for the Men’s Doubles tournament. We are going to pick partners on the day to allow for a more even spread of competition. So if you are worried about not being good enough or worried about being demolished on the court, don’t be! It won’t happen this year. You can sign up on the tennis board in the club house. The event will go from 9am-12pm on Sunday 14th of August. In tennis news, the Olympics begins this week with some interesting matches lined up. Canadian Eugenie Bouchard goes up against the American Sloane Stephens. They have played 4 matches against each other on tour and have won 2 a piece, meaning this match is probably going to be a good one to watch. Another Canadian, Vasek Pospisil, will undertake the challenge of knocking off the sixth seed of the tournament Gael Monfils. Milos Raonic will not be playing at the Olympics. If you would like any more information about any of our classes, or are interested in private or semiprivate lessons email me at tennispro@rlwyc.ca. See you on the courts! Daniel Fraser See you on the courts! www.rlwyc.ca Huge thank you to Head Pro Daniel for doing a fabulous job organizing the tournaments! 4 of 14 www.rlwyc.ca 807.543.2184 August 8, 2016 Tennis In Pictures ConnorDouglas presentedwithU16 HurstCupbyHead RidleyGouldWinner10&UnderDouglas CupwithMrs.Douglas Ryan and Ridley battled for the 10 and under Douglas Cup with Ridley winning the Cup. When heading over to the club please… Consider boat pooling to events and programs, particularly at peak times. Bring smaller craft to the club as they are more manageable for the dock hands and require less space. Pull your craft forward and create space for three boats on each side of the finger. Tie your boat properly so that it doesn't rub adjacent boats or come loose. Thanks in advance! This is one of the oldest Club traditions dating back over a century and this year we saw the return of some old school contests. One was the Balance Beam dreamed up and installed by Matt Wilson, where competitors had to walk out on a 3" wide plank that was cantilevered over the water to pluck a candy bar taped to the end. Despite this considerable incentive, only about 25% of the contestants returned safely with their booty. It was a hoot to watch the kids try different strategies to either success or spectacular failure followed by a swim in the Lake. Great Fun. We had four enthusiastic teen volunteers who wrangled their kids through the various contests, their constant enthusiasm and leadership really defines what club spirit is all about! Thanks to Christopher Gage, Victoria Stefanson, Ginny Nicolls and Domi Loewen for volunteering as team leaders. In all, 47 young members were divided into four teams and they competed in 7 different events. When the results were tallied it was determined that first place went to The Bears, followed closely by the Muskies then the Eagles and finally the Wolves. The Individual awards went to Danica Dickson in the girls, but in the boys category we had two winners tied for first: James Lawton and Isaac Peterson took home the Candy! This event is so much fun with the focus on participation, laughter and children. Behind the scenes, it could not happen without volunteers led by the efforts of Nancy Cipryk and Kirsten McConnell. Other volunteers were Kate McKee, Aidan Lawton, Ross Wilder, Riley Peterson, young members too old for the competition but on hand to help their friends have fun! The parent volunteers included Matt Wilson, Rod Nicolls, Shannon Wilson, Tanya Speirs, Amy McKee, Gail Rattray, Geri Wilson and Greg Klassen. Thanks to all of you for coming out and making it such a spectacular Yacht Club event! www.rlwyc.ca 12 of 14 www.rlwyc.ca 807.543.2184 August 8, 2016 LOWISA 51 For six days between July 30th and August 6th, the 51st Lake of the Woods International Sailing Association (LOWISA) Regatta explored the farthest reaches of beautiful Lake of the Woods. 46 racing boats tackled some of the wildest condition that long time LOWISA sailors have ever seen. Averaging over 20 knot winds every day of racing, and touring all the way down to the big water of the Little Traverse, skippers and crew were tested by the heavy winds and six-foot rollers! The lay-over day was hosted at beatiful Buena Vista Resort in Morson Ontario, where the hard- worked crews, support boats and a spectacular group of volunteers were treated to a large dinner along with a first-class fish fry. After some respite at the Lodge the winds didn't relent and in fact increased resulting in the cancelled race on day four, requiring crews to make their way to the next anchorage on the race course - or for some of the boats who struggled in the extremely heavy conditions to lay up at unexpected anchorages along the course. A member of the RLWYC’s fleet of E-scows, M22, skippered by Robert Aitken, competed in the Regatta and the conditions had the skipper and crew tested to the limit to keep the boat upright both under sail and while being towed. M22 was one of the boats that couldn't continue up the course during the cancelled race day and had to hunker down to avoid the conditions. The following day the crew left the unplanned anchorage at 6:00 a.m. – and were towed for 4 ½ hours to make it to the 10:30 start. The heroes of days like that are the support boats that keep the racers in the race. After over 120 miles of sailing (and 50 miles of motoring) M22 emerged with the Division 5 win and both the fastest elapsed time and the fasted corrected time. LOWISA 51 was a fantastic regatta – there is nothing quite like the camaraderie of this particular regatta. Crews socialize together, compare war stories and come to each other's rescue when things go wrong. This successful spirit was led by Jamie Patterson and Kimberly Ovitz who were the Regatta’s cocommodores.
