The temperatures last week proved that the lazy, hazy days of summer
are here - although there is nothing lazy about the pace at our Club! As
camps fill up with returning family members, our Club is poised for it’s
busiest couple of weeks. The staff is ready and working hard, the Club
looks great, programs and events are full.
What we have been
dreaming about all winter has arrived; we’re back!
The weekend hosted a few of our favourite RLWYC events. Thank you
to Overwater Golf Classic organizers Melanie and Jim Borger who ran
a successful, fun-filled afternoon despite a few sprinkles of rain. On
Sunday, families enjoyed a pancake breakfast and hit the beloved
Veranda Sale for bargains galore. I know the Heimbeckers came home
with a boat full of “treasures”. Christine Skene and her team knocked it
out of the park once again.
“Ask And You Shall Receive” my Dad always says. Well, "receive" we
did, after asking members to bid often and bid high at our signature
Yachtion yesterday. Thanks to Auctioneer Extraordinaire, Ashleigh
Banfield who kept the crowd entertained and bidding, it was a recordbreaking year for both the Yachtion and Veranda Sale. Ash, we won’t
tell CNN that you’ve been moonlighting! To our generous volunteers,
donors and purchasers, we couldn’t have done it without you. Thank
you for your continued support.
We have another magical week coming up. On Tuesday, ladies will
enjoy Cocktails & Canapés, organized by Shelagh Hare and Ellen
Brodigan. This fun new format promises to be a breezy get together
with a few surprises in store, not to be missed! Parents - it’s time to
groom the next generation of athletes, get your little swimmers out for
the Minnow Barge on Saturday. All ages and abilities are encouraged,
everyone crosses the finish line! One of our little Minnows may be a
future Three Island Swim winner, come cheer on adults and kids alike
for the annual event. And finally, what can be said about the infamous
Yacht Club Dance, but “See you there.”? I’ll be the one on the dance
floor.

SAILING NEWS
The highlight of the sailing week was the parent/child sailing race on Sunday afternoon. It was a good thing that we
had all loaded up on Pancakes and Bacon at the Yachtion because for the second year in a row, the wind blew hard
for this race!
We had a great turnout, our skippers included, in reverse age order, Ella
Irving, George Wilson, Kingsley Parkhill, Charlie Wilson, Lukas Borger
+Ian McLandress, James Heimbecker, John Nicolls, Edward Parkhill and
our head of sailing, James Tory. Each child managed to drag out a
parent to crew for them and the mums and dads braved high winds and
difficult conditions to make it a really fun event full of camaraderie. We all
helped rig each others boats, calm each others nerves and rescue each
others capsized boats! Generally the spirit and energy on the docks
was incredible.
On the race course the 20 to 25 knot gusty shifty winds made for very
interesting racing. George and Shannon Wilson won the start, but the
lack of crew weight caught up with them and James Tory soon showed
his upwind skills, crossing tacks with John Nicolls and Edward Parkhill
and getting to the windward mark first. the downwind was a crazy sleigh
ride where the Feva's really showed their speed off the wind. The Nicolls'
scow sailing experience paid off here and they were first to the leeward mark.
The Parkhill heft and heavy weather skills came to the front on the second
upwind and they passed everyone on the next leg. the final downwind was a
riot as the wind continued to build, Ted and Edward we way out ahead when
they made the conservative decision the douse the kite early. As Ted
recounted afterwards "famous last words"! We passed
them as Edward was swimming for the rudder! The
final upwind was closely contested between the Torys
and the Nicolls, but ultimately the Nicolls prevailed by a
few boat lengths. Through all the mayhem James and
John Heimbecker kept their 420 upright and sailed well
in tough conditions to pull off a third. Matt and Charlie
Wilson finished fourth putting in a solid effort.
We had to call the race because our crash boats were
busy rescuing capsized boats. the race committee led
by Hunter Kristjansson did a fantastic job of keeping the
sailors safe and getting everybody back to shore wet,
tired and happy!
Next week is the Kenora Cup on Sunday. the perfect
way to recover from the dance! Be sure to sign out a
club boat and review the Sailing Instructions posted in
the club. I have done this race race a number of times
with my kids and it is always a fun event. Let's see if we can get a small
boat to knock off the Scows who have dominated this race as of late.

TENNIS NEWS
REMEMBER
Week 4 has brought out the best of the weather and
what a great time to bring out the sun with two
tournaments being completed. On Tuesday we had the
Junior Doubles, the first time we have had such an
event. 22 kids turned out, with finalists Charlie Newell
and Isaac Peterson being defeated by Connor Douglas
and Will Newell. Well done guys! Angus Sutherland and
Mark Johnson won the Men’s Doubles. Thanks Lorne
Hurst for organizing this event, and thanks everyone for
participating!

Three Island Swim
The RLWYC three island swim goes Saturday at 11 am. Make a three-person relay or complete the swim
yourself. If you want to get on a relay and cannot find anyone, just show up on Saturday morning.
Remember that a lack of training, baggy shorts and no goggles are the hallmark of a three island purist.
There are lots of awards: rookie of the year, most improved, and the coveted participation award. Make sure
there is at least one participant from your camp.
Bring a spotter with a non-motorized boat.

In 1989, six intrepid swimmers decided to swim from
Keewatin Beach to Coney Beach. This was a simpler time.
None of the six swimmers had any preparation. The early
route crossed the float plane runway, and two channels so in
1990 when the swimmers re-convened with a few foolish
friends, they did so at the Yacht Club for a swim around
Kalamalka, Gourley and the Yacht Club Island. Hence the
name: three island swim.
The swim course
has remained the
same since that
second swim. At 3
km, the event is a
true test of the more
confident individual at your camp. For those who enjoy the social
aspects of this event, there is the relay category where three
swimmers each complete one leg of the 3 km course. All
participants
are
required to have a
spotter
(strongly
preferred in a nonmotorized boat) to
watch over their swimmer. On wavy days, when it’s one
breath of air and one breath of water, it is nice to have a trusty
spotter to guide the way and be available for rescue.
Spotters Instructions for Three Island Swim
The course is always finished by a resounding sound of the
Yacht Club bell and swimmers are met with well earned
snacks of fresh fruit, muffins and home made cookies. This
year will feature the addition of the RLWYC Minnows. The Minnows are younger swimmers - no age
restriction - who will all swim from a barge so that they can safely participate. We want younger members to
join in on the fun of the three island swim and will eventually graduate to either relay teams or to compete in
the full swim. The Minnow Barge will have lifeguards, spare spotters and lots of blankets to keep kids warm!

SWIMMING NEWS The swimming team had another fantastic week as participants get geared up for the Minnows 3 island
swim this next long weekend! An energetic group joined last week in the morning including Elly Heimbecker who made excellent
progress in Swimmer 5. Abby Lawton is working on her swimmer 3, Ella Radcliffe worked hard on
swimmer 4 and 5, Willa Nicolls and Lilly Anderson championed part way through swimmer 2. Baxter and
Oldie Spiers were super successful as Baxter completed swimmer 1 and Oldie completed swimmer 3.
Congratulations to all the kids and their tremendous efforts. In the Sailing/ Tennis/ Swimming combo we had 5 young swimmers, Ellie, Hudson, Matthew, Josie and
Blake - all were dying to jump in the lake after such a sizzling time sailing. A special note for Ann Magnus who finished swimmer 4 and did a 1000 meter swim to practice for the
minnows. The BIG NEWS is the Minnows Swim Team for this weekend!!! So… sign up! There is no age minimum
- the sheet is on the board and it is very important that we know who you are!! Remember for Saturday’s
Minnows 3 Island Swim you will need some warm clothes, a towel, swimming googles if you have them
and a great sense of fun. Drew Stephens has kindly volunteered to drive his deluxe party craft so you can
be rest assured that swimmers whilst not in the water will be comfortable. Life guards are on duty the
whole time and safety is the priority. The Minnows will be getting prizes and much more!!! Please contact Lena Sprague

A few tips from the Harbour Master
The season is in full swing, our camps are full, and all our lake friends are here - please review the tips below to make it easier for
everyone to enjoy our RLWYC.
When heading over to the club please…
Consider boat pooling to events and programs, particularly at peek times.
Bring smaller craft to the club as they are more manageable for the dock hands and require less space.
Pull your craft forward and create space for three boats on each side of the finger.
Tie your boat properly so that it doesn't rub adjacent boats or come loose.

summer and donates all the proceeds to organizations in need!! Thank you to Safeway for donating the paper bags for the book sale.

OVERWATER CLASSIC
This year’s OWG Classic was another successful event despite the rain, with over 130 people
participating.
Lowest scoring team who gets to sign the Argyle Ring is the “Maycher Team”
Lowest scoring Female is Victoria Konantz and lowest scoring male is Mark Johnson
Both names will engraved on the Grizzly Bear Cup.

And the most observant reader award goes to
member, Gord Konantz!
Last week under sailing news you saw this picture
posted with a caption saying it was “Rob Aitken and
crew trying to keep it upright at the top mark”.
In fact, the real story behind the photo as provided
by Gord is “Lois Parkhill is the skipper (her boat),
Jill Kilgour on the leeboard and John Turner on the
jib. They were married the following year,1963. The
boat was well on its way to dumping.”
