Master Program in Linguistics
Faculty of Humanities, Diponegoro University
in Collaboration with
Balai Bahasa Jawa Tengah
Rationale
Theme
Empowering Families, Schools,
and Media for Maintaining
Indigenous Languages
Objectives
Ø To pay attention to the issues of
empowering families, schools, and
media for maintaining indigenous
languages
Ø To share ideas concerning the roles
of the institutions in maintaining and
revitalizing indigenous languages
Ø To build up relations among
linguists, teachers, language
researchers so as to create new
perspectives on language
maintenance and shift
Up to this year, Master Program in Linguistics, Faculty of Humanities,
Diponegoro University in collaboration with Balai Bahasa Jawa Tengah
has five times conducted international seminar considering Language
Maintenance and Shift (LAMAS). This annual seminar has discussed
many topics related to the issue.
This year, we focus on the role of families, schools, and media in
maintaining indigenous languages. As we know, due to the great
exposure of both foreign languages and the national language, the need
for maintaining and exposing the indigenous languages is unavoidable.
Government, educational institutions, and society must cooperate to
solve the problem.
Therefore, in this opportunity, linguists and those interested in the studies
of sociolinguistics, stylistics, historical linguistics, ethnography of
communication, language ideology or identity, micro-linguistics, applied
linguistics, and language teaching need to meet together and discuss the
crucial problems in a serious seminar. This seminar will initiate some
solutions and efforts to preserve indigenous languages as a part of our
identity.
