Letter From the JCC Executive Director
I recently had a terrific opportunity to meet
with other Executive Directors from JCCs
around the country for a seminar at the JCC
Association’s office in New York. Dr. David
Ackerman, Sr. Vice President of the Mandel
Center for Jewish Education, led several of the
sessions, and, in his usual fashion, he ended by
pulling out a guitar to lead the group in Jewish
song. He encouraged the group to think about
incorporating music whenever possible to
further Jewish learning.
Wishing I had my banjo with me, I turned to
several of my colleagues and asked, “Do you
guys sing a lot at your JCC?”
The response was a decisive, “No.”
This got me thinking once again, about how
special our Asheville JCC is. It seems like
hardly a day goes by here without some
gathering of people around music. Whether
it’s Penny White leading our musical Tot
Shabbat and Havdalah each week, our monthly
gathering of the Havdalah Song Circle, or
Seth Kellam belting it out with our JCC Kids
or Camp Ruach children – these halls are filled
with shirah.
Asheville’s Jewish musicality is hardly limited
to the JCC. There are so many talented
musicians and song leaders among us, and
our love of music is showcased at many
religious services and at every public
celebration we host.
This is one of countless reasons why I love
our community so much. But clearly it’s not
just music that brings us together. It seems to
me that we all share a commitment to work
together for the greater good – through the
Asheville Jewish Leadership Collaborative, One
Jewish Asheville, Teen Connect, and numerous
collaborations between Jewish agencies
to make programs accessible to everyone.
In fact, the next big collaboration is our
community-wide Purim celebration on March
16th (see page 5), that you won’t want to miss!
Recently, I was honored to spend some time
with Morton Mandel, the same kind soul who
generously funds the JCC Association’s Mandel
Center for Jewish Education. Mr. Mandel has
been involved with JCCs for most of his life,
and he stopped by to visit our JCC on his
recent trip to Asheville. He talked about why
he believes that JCCs are so important – not
only to Jewish people, but to improving the
quality of life for everyone in a community.
“The big word for me is community,” he said,
and went on to ask, “What are the constructive
forces that make life worth living? A Jewish
Community Center is one of those…. It’s
a center for everybody: Jews, non-Jews,
religious, non-religious. There aren’t many
organizations that have those credentials.”
At the JCC, we are so proud to do our part in
building and supporting community. Please
join us for our Annual Membership Meeting on
Sunday, January 19th at 1:00 pm, when we will
introduce our 2014 board of directors, honor
our outstanding volunteer and employee of the
year, and celebrate “Ahavat Kehila.”

A Day Exploring the Practical
Ecology of Judaism

basics of permaculture and lead a discussion of

Parties Around Town Back for Another Tour

We are seeking hosts for the 2014 party season
(early summer – fall). We are looking for creative
and energetic hosts to plan a party of any size, any
theme, any menu. Past party seasons have included
everything from gourmet dinner parties, pet friendly
events, to trail races, bike rides, and family farm day.
This is a fun way to meet new friends, reunite with
old ones, and help raise funds for the JCC all while

organic, sustainably grown, local produce to our
JCC community. CSA (Community Supported
Agriculture) members receive a selection of
produce each week for the entire season. Choose
a whole share for $500 or half a share for $375.

My First Marathon
Starts now!
Your child can start training now to run a
“marathon.” Help your child learn healthy lifestyle
choices at an early age, by introducing the joy of
running. Sign up your child (free of charge) to
walk/run a total of 26.3 miles between now and
May 4th (date of Falafel 5K and Kids Fun Run).
Children can accomplish this by running as many
distance increments as they need to. Those that
choose to complete their marathon with us at the
Falafel 5k or at the Kid’s Fun Run will receive a

Love and Logic for Parents
JCC Parents Night Out
Mondays, January 6th, February 3rd, and

Jon Jay Esslinger, from T.H.E. Parenting Group
will facilitate these parent workshops on Love
and Logic positive discipline strategies used by
the teachers at Shalom Children’s Center. Jon
will explain techniques and strategies, using
real-life examples. These methods are helpful
for all parents, and are highly recommended for
parents of children enrolled in Shalom. Please

parenting strategies. Meghan O’Malley Doubraski,

brain development, and the neuroscience of Love

Tu B’Shevat seder. This seder will teach young

for us. We will sing songs and learn about
different kinds of fruits and nuts that come from

all eight weeks, Camp Ruach campers come away
with confidence and independence.

Take a guided tour of the Colburn Museum
which will focus on the formation and geology
of the Southern Appalachians, particularly
the mountains of Western North Carolina.
Attention will be given to North Carolina’s gold
and gem mining history. The two hour tour
will conclude with an overview of meteorology
and oceanography with an emphasis on North
Carolina’s unique coast and its impact on weather.

Mishloach manot (mish-LOHach mah-NOTE) literally means
"sending of portions". Also
known as Purim Baskets, they
are filled with a variety of sweets,
nuts, and other food or drink,
then given to relatives,
neighbors, friends, and even
strangers as a show of
appreciation, respect or
affection. The custom stems
from the Book of Esther, the
source of the Purim story, as a
way to ensure that everyone in
ancient Israel would have
enough food for the Purim feast.
Did You Know: Prior to Jews
coming to America, Purim – not
Chanukah- was the Jewish
festival of gift giving. The gifts
came in the form of a Purim
basket.

This year’s community-wide PurimPalooza will feature the opportunity to purchase Purim
Gift Baskets for your friends and family. Each “basket” is actually a re-useable gift/grocery
bag containing an assortment of sweets, nuts, hamentaschen, drinks and more. Baskets are
$12 each. After you have placed your order, we’ll notify your recipients and they can pick
up their gift at PurimPalooza, Sunday, March 16th, at the Asheville Event Center.
