Our Pathologists - Clinpath Laboratories
Our Pathologists
Quality is in our DNA
Our Practice
Leading the way in pathology services
Clinpath Laboratories is a highly respected and well-established pathology practice, providing laboratory
services to general practitioners, specialists, private hospitals and aged care facilities in Adelaide and
regional South Australia. We are medically managed by specialist pathologists and a team of highly qualified
scientists and other professionals. Underlying everything we do is our aim to deliver quality, professional and
personalised service to our referring doctors, in order to provide the best possible care for their patients.
Our Laboratories
A commitment to scientific and technical excellence
All our laboratories are of the highest standard and are fully accredited with the National Association of
Testing Authorities, Australia (NATA) and the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia (RCPA).
The main laboratory is located at 19 Fullarton Road, Kent Town, and there are more than 70 collection
centres located across Adelaide for patient convenience. Hospital laboratories are also associated with
Calvary North Adelaide, Calvary Wakefield, Calvary Central Districts and St Andrew’s Hospitals, as well as at
the St Andrew’s Oncology Day Unit.
Clinpath provides a round-the-clock pathology service to all centres 24 hours a day, 365 days per year
through our main hospital laboratory situated at Calvary Wakefield, which is also our transfusion hub. Under
the guidance of Dr Lakshmi Nath, Director of Haematology and Hospital Pathology Laboratories, Clinpath
has established itself as having particular expertise in the management of massive transfusion; working
closely with surgical specialists and anaesthetists, Dr Nath has developed a rapid response protocol for
severe surgical blood loss, which is able to provide cover for patients in all private hospitals.
At Clinpath, we pride ourself on being able to adapt our services to the needs of each individual doctor,
whether you are a general practitioner or a specialist. This extends from our courier service to every area of
the laboratory. We encourage pathologist and doctor communication whenever required. A dedicated Client
Liaison team is appointed to look after each medical practitioner, to ensure individualised service.
Sonic Healthcare
Ethical business practice and medical management
Clinpath Laboratories is a local laboratory, established more than 25 years ago. Together with Douglass Hanly Moir
Pathology, it was a founder member of Sonic Healthcare Limited, an Australian success story, growing to become one of
Australia’s largest pathology providers and the third largest in the world. It remains a fully Australian-owned, publicly listed
company and continues to run a medically-led federation of local laboratories, supported by the expertise and resources
of our national and international partners. The Sonic Board, which is composed of 10 directors, includes pathologists and
radiologists, ensuring that decisions made at board level are medically informed.
Through its widespread Australasian presence, strong teamwork and systems, and genuine commitment to patient care
and excellence in service, Sonic is able to benefit from the continual sharing of information between practices to ensure
world class quality and provide the widest range of tests.
Sonic Healthcare’s extensive network of pathology and radiology groups brings with it an unparalleled depth of specialist
medical expertise and commercial experience.

Our Pathologists
Working with doctors in clinical practice
Two key attributes make a good pathologist. The first
is a high level of knowledge across a broad range of
sometimes rare and complex human diseases, and the
second is an ability to communicate that knowledge in a
timely and meaningful way.
The specialist pathologists at Clinpath Laboratories
offer an outstanding breadth and depth of knowledge
and expertise.
We are grateful to have many anatomical pathologists who
have developed a particularly high level of expertise in
specific subspecialist areas of histopathology, providing our
practice with a broad range of ability and a comprehensive
diagnostic scope.
For example, Clinpath Laboratories is very fortunate to
be the only South Australian laboratory with a dedicated
oral pathologist, Professor Richard Logan, who
qualified in dental surgery before specialising in oral and
maxillofacial pathology.
Dr Margaret Lim, Dr Geoff Mower and A/Professor Wendy
Raymond, previously from King and Mower Pathologists,
have recently joined Clinpath, bringing an unparalleled
reputation for expertise in breast pathology. At this time,
no fewer than five of our Clinpath pathologists are currently
providing pathology expertise to Breastscreen SA. Dr Lim
also brings expertise in gynaecological pathology, which
compliments one of Dr Suchitra Somers’ special interests.
Our dedicated dermatopathologist, Dr Jan Ibbetson, has
many years of experience, and is well supported by the
histopathology team. Clinpath also provides the popular
Surgical Skin Audit Program, a professional development
tool, approved by both the RACGP and the ACRRM for
the awarding of CPD points. It uses peer comparisons to
provide our participants with statistical information that can
assist them in refining diagnostic and biopsy skills.
Dr Jonathan Allin and Dr Sabine Ernsting have a broad
knowledge, but with a particular interest in gastrointestinal
and urological pathology, respectively.
Associate Professors David Ellis and John Miliauskas are
national leaders in the diagnosis of lymphoproliferative
disorders, each having more than 30 years of experience
in lymphoma diagnosis, as well as co-chairing the
Australasian Guidelines for the Diagnosis and Management
of lymphoma, and providing expert second opinions
on biopsies from patients throughout Australasia. This
expertise in lymph node pathology is synergistic with
the high level of service developed in haematology
by Dr Lakshmi Nath who, having introduced the only
flow cytometry analyser in private practice in South
Australia, also completes the only fully integrated
diagnostic haematopathology service in private practice
in South Australia. Dr Nath is well supported by clinical
haematologists, A/Professor Nick Wickham, Dr Shriram
Nath and Dr Craig Wallington-Beddoe.
Dr Michael Metz and Dr Clive Beng have many years of
experience in providing clinical advice and consultation,
especially in metabolic aspects of disease and
endocrinology. Together, they provide an in-depth, high
quality chemical pathology service.
Dr Jhumur Roy, our resident full-time infectious diseases
specialist, has a special interest in Helicobacter pylori
infections and oversees the laboratory diagnosis of
bacterial, viral, parasitic and fungal diseases, following
many years of experience in public and private pathology in
Queensland, Canberra and South Australia.
Although an independently and medically run organisation,
Clinpath is part of the Sonic Healthcare group. Sonic
Health is an Australian success story. Beginning as a small
pathology practice in New South Wales, it has grown into
a major international pathology and radiology organisation,
still based in, and run from, Sydney. With unrivalled
pathologist expertise internationally, and from the major
laboratories in Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne and other
capital cities, we have a diverse and impressive range
of expertise to draw on when confronted by a difficult or
rare case.
This is exemplified by the newly introduced Sonic Genetics
service, about which we are very excited. Directed by Dr
Graeme Suthers from Adelaide, this new endeavour will
capitalise on the vast range of testing available across all of
the Sonic laboratories, both nationally and internationally,
in order to offer world-class expertise to all Australian
patients in this highly specialised and rapidly growing area
of medicine.
It goes without saying that our pathologists are experienced
and highly qualified specialists, Fellows of the Royal
College of Pathology of Australasia, involved in professional
and educational activities with clinical colleagues, many
participating actively in national or local committees and
postgraduate education. Several Clinpath pathologists also
hold university positions.
Our pathologists warmly encourage doctors to contact
them if they can be of assistance in any way and all
are available to discuss individual patients and to
provide information or advice on ordering of tests, result
interpretation or any other aspect of pathology.
Our pathologists believe that personal and ongoing
relationships with referring doctors are fundamental
to providing the best quality patient care.
Our pathologists are available 24 hours a day, to give
advice and support when needed.
We encourage you to consult them so that we can
assist you in the management of your patients.
They can be contacted via our Client Services number
8366 2088 or directly by their mobile phone numbers.
