St. Aloysius Academy
Mission Statement
St. Aloysius Academy
established by the Sisters,
Servants of the Immaculate
Heart of Mary, is a private
Catholic elementary school
committed to the spiritual,
moral, and academic
development of each student.
St. Aloysius prepares young
boys to assume with confidence
roles of Christian leadership
and service within a global
society. Through the dedication
and commitment of a caring
and professional faculty and
staff, partnering with
supportive parents, each student
is encouraged to recognize and
develop his God-given gifts and
Dear Friends,
talents
to be prepared to meet
with Christian fortitude the
challenges and opportunities of
the 21st century.
Dear Friends,
We have created a foundational saying that captures the legacy of our
beloved Academy: Great schools are not just established; they are
experienced! Whether a graduate from the early 1900’s, a 50th
anniversary member of the Class of 1962, a 25th anniversary member of
the Class of 1987, or a current student, it is the individual stories that best
reflect the beauty and truth of this comment. It characterizes the nurturing
environment of St. Aloysius Academy that influences
the lives of its students, inspiring leadership and service as men for
others. This influence may be viewed as an intangible, yet its actual effect
Stefan & Niall Pegues
makes for a remarkable and significant life-impacting experience on our
students. What we refer to as the St.AA experience!
The greatness of our Academy is never thought about as a
completely accomplished fact; it is a dynamic reality that is
made stronger by your ongoing support through your prayers
and generosity of time, talent and treasure. Your thoughtful
contributions help to align the current experience closer to its
historic place as part of the St. Aloysius Academy legacy. We
are forever grateful to you!
Remember to plan a visit! The students love visitors and the
opportunity to tell of their St.AA experience!
With gratitude and love, asking God to bless you,
Sincerely,
Sister Stephen Anne Roderiguez IHM Ed.D.

Dear Sister Jane:
I’ve been meaning to write to you and the other kind Sisters of IHM who I met at the St. Aloysius

Wilbur
Academy Homecoming this past October 15th. It was great to have the chance to talk to you again, as well as Sister
Stephen Anne and Sister Noreen.. Because I moved out of the area a number of years ago, I had not been back to St. AA
for quite some time, but the homecoming visit brought back so many great memories of being a student at St. AA
together with my 6 brothers who also attended the school. Back in the 1960’s and 1970’s when the seven of us were
all students at St.AA, we had the advantage of living within walking distance directly down the back hill from the school
on Wootton Rd.. The fact that we were so close to the school added to the great fun and enjoyment of being at St. AA. I
remember that even in our off days, when we weren’t in school, we would find ourselves playing on the football or the
playground, and even, I have to admit many years later, sneaking into the gym on the days the door was left unlocked to
play some basketball. (We were also happy we could sleep late and still make it to school on time!)
During my homecoming visit in October, I toured the school grounds and buildings, all of which looked
fantastic on that beautiful October day. As you know, I spent a number of years teaching in the Catholic school
system here in Baltimore, and now, when I return to St. AA, I marvel at the exquisite grounds and facility that is
St. Aloysius and think how fortunate the students are to be in such a beautiful locale.Frankly, there are many
students here in Baltimore (and teachers, as well) who would consider themselves very blessed to be at such a
school as St.AA. During the homecoming, all of the students and parents I met were enthusiastic and joyful to be
there on that perfect Fall day. While I was watching the football game and later standing in the brick courtyard, I
recalled the days when the basketball games and pep rallies took place in the old gym (later converted into a small
chapel), and Sister Paul Bernard’s candy store (where the bookstore is now), where we would stop by for a treat just about
every lunchtime. I recalled also memories of my kindergarten year with Mrs. Fogarty, and the afternoon piano lessons I
had on the second floor above the brick courtyard. I had a chance to see the courtyard bricks bearing all of the Sullivan
names and my parents as well. Of course, by the time I entered first grade, the new school had been built, and I took time
to walk back through the hallways, still struck after all of these years by its modern and pristine condition with such
improvements as an expanded library and new computer lab. I looked into the classrooms where I had encountered
such great teachers as Sister Marita Louise, Sister Regina Anita, Mr. Don McDermott, among many others.
I know my six brothers who attended St. Aloysius also have great memories of the school. All of us received
scholarships to various high schools, including Malvern Prep, and then continued to college. It was certainly
important to my development as a student at St.AA to be able to attend the same school with my brothers (Joe,
Kevin, Mike, Brian, Martin, and John) when there was always at least one of them in a grade somewhere above or
below me.
Even later, by the time I attended college, I found myself tapping into the education I received at St. AA. I say this
because the way in which the sisters taught the values of hard work and academic discipline which stayed with me
throughout my college years, and even into law school at Villanova. Our teachers back then demanded hard work and had
high standards for our accomplishments. Without a doubt, we were focused on our studies, and it paid off with dividends
even years later. (I can still remember Sr. Mary Esther coming into our hushed classroom to distribute report cards and
my disappointment if I only achieved “First Honors” as opposed to “Distinguished Honors.”) I also have to mention one
of the best aspects of St. Aloysius school was (and I am sure, still is) the sense of community that goes hand in hand
with being a student there. I made many great friends there in my youth, many of them who went on to Malvern prep
with me. I always know, of course, that I’m welcome back at St.AA at any time, not just Homecoming, and will be
greeted like an old friend. Incidentally, I know my parents always enjoyed participating in school functions like the
May procession or “Night at the Races” and also watching us play sports like football and basketball. I also have to note
that both my brother Kevin, my sister Maureen, and my sister-in-law Ruth Sullivan, were part of the faculty at St AA for
a number of years and loved teaching there. In these days of closing schools and declining enrollment both in
Philadelphia and here in Baltimore, it’s important to remember and honor the fact that St. AA stands as a wonderful
repository of distinguished Catholic education with its dedicated administrators, teachers, students and parents.

A Mommy Moment
by Carolyn Slota
Tears rolling gently down an upturned face
There could be no comfort, no long-term embrace
Only a door which opened in greeting
Unseen by the heart that was broken and bleeding
Wanting only to run from the thought of Montessori
Would anyone believe the truth of this story?
As my Bobby smiled, his hand holding mine
Saying "Mommy stop crying, I'm gonna be fine."
Yes, this pretty much sums it up.........our three
children Bobby 2002, Kelly Clockhouse Grad,
and John 2012, all three beginning their career
at The Academy, and all three happily joining
The St. Aloysius Family. My husband and I
liked St. Aloysius on sight. I had graduated
from Sacred Heart Academy right across the
street. This was familiar and if I had to send my
children out of my care........who better than into
The Slota Family
the loving arms of the IHM Sisters? Well, what
about their Mother's arms? My husband was all
smiles as our children began school. "Have a nice day," and off he would go. I, on the other hand, was
their Mother. Releasing my children from my lovingly, clenched arms was another matter completely.
Bobby first- painful. Kelly next- heart-wrenching, John- they say it gets easier........I wept for three days.
All this being said, and truly said, I began to embark on my own career at St. Aloysius. Yes, that special
word that can mean the world...........Volunteering! For over two decades I would be Homeroom
mom, Lunchroom mom, Chair committees, Chaperone field trips, Stuff the focus envelope, and
become President of the Parent Association for 3, yes, 3 terms. Of course, my favorite, and one
which gave many a parent reason for a good laugh......Spring Show Choreographer! You don't know
what living is until you're dancing around The Academy gymnasium and wishing you were 40 lbs thinner.
But- you do it anyway, because that's just who you are. Over the years, my husband and I came to love
St. Aloysius Academy, the always helpful and gifted faculty, the support of a wonderful staff,
and the kind understanding of the IHM Sisters. We learned that not only were our children
embraced, but we were too. The parents we met and became life-long friends with, the friends of our
children who we came to love as our own, and the very building itself...........welcoming and warm. There
are special memories for all parents here. This is where we sent our children, many from babyhood. St.
Aloysius Academy will always be a second home to us, and we hope for all those who choose
this outstanding school. Whether you are a homeroom mom, a soccer mom, a cup-cake bake-at-home
mom, a working mom, or just a mom, St. Aloysius Academy is waiting to welcome you with open arms,
as the building itself whispers softly, "You're home."
I think the best way to measure the impact a school has on a person is to measure his/her
connection to the school once he/she has graduated. When I graduated from St. Aloysius, one of
my former teachers, Sam Wallace, gave me my first job. Mr. Wallace ran a summer camp on the grounds
of St. Aloysius. I had attended the camp as a student, and after graduating I worked there as a camp
counselor. Mr. Wallace was the first boss and the best boss I’ve ever had. My best friends at St.
Aloysius were a group of triplets: John, Joe, and Terry Cesarine. Joe and Terry ended up
attending the same university I did, and I still consider the triplets to be three of my closest friends.
Now, ten years after graduating from St. Aloysius, I have come back to the school and volunteered
to coach my little brother’s basketball team. A former teacher of mine, Chris Cooney, gave me the
opportunity. Some might say that coaching the basketball team has been my way of giving back to the
school, but that’s not the truth. Coaching my brother’s team has been a tremendously rewarding
experience for me. In other words, ten years after having graduated from St. Aloysius, the
school is still giving me as much as it ever has.

I have been a member of the St. Aloysius family for eleven years. St. Aloysius Academy has
become a true part of me, and has helped me prepare for my future. St. Aloysius has given my fellow
classmates and me the opportunity to attend very prestigious high schools of our choosing. I am on my
way to St. Joseph’s Preparatory High School next year, and St. Aloysius has given me that
chance. This school has allowed my classmates and me to secure a strong foundation going into high
school. I feel I am more than prepared to take on these next four years of my academic career. When I
look back at what St. Aloysius has done for me, all I can say is thank you.

Dear Alumni Brothers,
I would like to share my thoughts with you. As I look at my life, and where my decisions have taken me, the one
thing I have always held dear, are the things I did that got me here. My years at St. Aloysius Academy laid the
groundwork for me, not just in education, but as a father and a man. It has guided me through my life’s journey. Years
later, I am the father of two; our daughter, Maura is in second grade at our sister school, Villa Maria Academy, and my
son, Tristan, walks the path of the Wildcat at the Clockhouse with Sister Amedeo.
I remember the first family Mass we attended, shortly before Maura started at the Clockhouse. It felt like a
reunion, everyone was still there, and they hadn’t changed a bit. They had stories to tell my daughter about her daddy.
They welcomed us back like family. The IHM tradition continues to be an important part of my life. If all of this
sounds familiar, it is because it is. This is our family; these are our friends. The fact that I can write this letter 30 years
later, and you all know what I am talking about- is a testament to the St. Aloysius legacy. You have all heard it said
many times over- “Who says you can’t go back?” Coming back is exactly what we all should do. For 5 years, I have
come here every day to drop off and pick up my son. As I drive into the driveway, I am filled with feelings of nostalgia. I
am reminded of myself being dropped off by my father as a youngster. No doubt we all have our stories about our years
at St. Al’s. Not unlike many of you, mine began as a tiny little Kindergartner in Mrs. Kerrigan’s class. As the years
progressed, we grew and learned- entrenched in the IHM tradition that has always remained with us, and always will.
We were and continue to be “Christian Gentlemen”, as Sister Laetitia always taught us.
In the near future, be sure to watch for information regarding Homecoming and other events focused on
welcoming back the alumni. If you haven’t been back, these are wonderful opportunities to rekindle old friendships
and reminisce. We are gearing up for a very exciting Homecoming this year. For the first time ever, we will have a
tent dedicated specifically to Alumni. There will even be a Classic Car show. If you have a classic car, we would love to
see it – details follow. There also will be opportunities to show off your St. AA memorabilia. We hope to see you there.
Sincerely,

Dear Sister Stephen Anne,
I hope this finds you well! Shelly and I wanted to drop you a note of thanks (and to all of the Sisters,
teachers, and all associated with St. Aloysius) for all that is done for Kyle at St. Aloysius. Kyle
just absolutely loves everything about his school – his teachers, classmates, music and sports
programs, the atmosphere, environment – everything.
We truly feel privileged to be part of the St. Aloysius family and greatly appreciate the
support, love and mentorship extended to Kyle. Shelly and I so believe in the institution of St.
Aloysius and all that it stands for.
With that, please accept the enclosed as a token of our appreciation for allowing us to be part of
something so great. May God continue to bless you and all of the members of the St. Aloysius team.
Sincelely,

Reverend Joseph Murphy
’37 had the privilege of
saying the first Mass for the
St. John Neumann Parish
in the gym at St. Aloysius
Academy. His brother,
Father Edward was the first
pastor of that Parish, but
because of illness, could not
say that first Mass. We think
it is exciting that one of our
alumni was priviledged to say
that first Mass here at St.
Aloysius. This is truly a
blessed campus!!!
Edward Peters ’37 is
anxious to get in touch with
his classmates. Ed is now
living in Mobile, Alabama.
His e-mail address is
6704Peters@comcast.net. Ed
sent the words to the first
verse of the School Song at
that time. “We love to sing of
St. AA our noble Alma Mater.
Alma Mater
In all the land she will
outstand, no prep can e’er
surpass her.
We love the Villa of Mary,
the pride of her daughters
blueWe’ll all be true to the
IHM’s and St. Aloysius
forever.”
It was so good to hear from
Ed. It is so exciting to hear
from alums who graduated so
long ago. Imagine how the
influence of St. Aloysius has
spread throughout the land in
all those years.!!!!!
