Toshl Finance lets you enter expenses on-the-go and gives you fun graphics to show just what you’re spending on. Spend Today – Save Tomorrow! helps you save money for the weekend by encouraging you to set a daily budget, while Meter Readings does what it says on the tin – tracking how much gas, electricity and water you’re using and showing how you could save. 2 4 GET INVOLVED This year’s Sport Relief weekend is 18-20 March. In 2014 Sainsbury’s raised a fantastic £6.7m, and this year they’re returning again as the headline sponsor of the Sainsbury’s Sport Relief Games. So why not get involved and walk, run, swim or cycle yourself proud with thousands of people from your local area? Whether you get sponsored to enter an event at the Sainsbury’s Sport Relief Games or fundraise with friends and family, you’ll help people living incredibly tough lives here in the UK and across the world’s poorest communities. There’ll also be tons of top telly for you to look out for across the BBC in the run-up to the big weekend, which will culminate in an unmissable night of Sport Relief TV, live from Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. Find out more and sign up to the Games at sportrelief.com. 3 Get £15k Parent Free Life Cover According to recent research*, 40% of parents with children under the age of 18 don’t have any life insurance – while 10% say they haven’t got round to taking it out yet. To help you get started, Sainsbury’s Life Insurance provided by Legal & General is offering £15,000 of Parent Free Life Cover for 12 months for parents with a child under the age of five – and both parents can apply for cover. Terms and conditions apply. See p23 for more details. PARKING SORTED You can pre-book car parking spaces anywhere in the UK, avoid parking tickets and save loads of money compared to regular parking through sites such as justpark.com. Brilliant! 5 On your bike! It’s not often there’s a tax break that saves you money and helps you get fitter, but the Cycle to Work scheme, introduced in 1999 to promote ‘healthier journeys to work and reduce environmental pollution’ ticks both boxes. So how does it work? Basically, your employer buys you a bike and safety equipment of your choice up to the value of £1000 and you ‘hire’ it from them via salary sacrifice (you agree to give up part of your salary in exchange for a benefit, in this case, a bike) for the next 12 months. The money-saving bit comes in because your hire payments come from your gross salary, so you pay less income tax and NI – plus you’ll be saving on the ever-increasing costs of the daily commute. After 12 months, you can buy the bike from your employer for its Fair Market Value or extend your hire period through the scheme operator. Find out more at gov.uk, and for a fun way to see how much you could save compared to your usual commute, check out cycletoworkcalculator.com. 4 SAINSBURYSBANK.CO.UK/MONEY-MATTERS 04-07_Ticklist2_V5b_R1.indd 4 14/01/2016 09:56 THE FUTURE OF VIRTUAL PAYMENTS Technology expert and gadget obsessive Dean Evans (techradar.com, MacLife and SFX) takes a cyber-walk through some of the cashless payment options we’re set to be using now and in the future… LL ast year, the contactless card ruled supreme with a record £2.32bn being spent. That’s an astounding 10 transactions a second. This year, it’s all about the smartphone, with innovative ways to pay meaning your wallet could soon be out of a job. SELFIE PAY What? MasterCard® recently tried out a system in the US that authenticated transactions with a selfie-style photo – no cards or devices needed. How? A facial recognition system scans your face and compares it to a stored photo. But why stop there? Swedish startup Quixter developed a technology to scan the pattern of veins in your palm, while the Telegraph reported that we all have a ‘germ cloud’ floating around us that could be used as a unique identifier. A mobile payment/digital wallet system that turns your smartphone (or smartwatch) into a contactless card. How? A digital wallet stores your card details securely inside an app, enabling you to pay in stores simply by holding your phone or watch near a card reader. Who? Hipsters and gadget geeks as well as Apple Watch-wearing or iPhone 6-owning technophiles. iOS only. ZAPP What? Backed by major UK banks, Zapp is a new pay-by-bank app. How? Like Apple Pay, Zapp stores your card details inside an app so you can use your smartphone as a tap-and-go contactless card. Who? Everyone. Eventually. Right now, Zapp is still waiting on the launchpad but, once live, it will be available for both iOS and Android users. PAYM What? A system that enables you to send money to a phone contact. How? Paym links your bank sort code and account number to your phone number, so you can effectively ‘text’ your payment to one of your contacts. Who? Students, friends or anyone using one of the 17 participating banks and building societies. For iOS and Android. Here, two contenders take on the budget versus blow-it battle… Liza Brissenden Hemstock from Buckinghamshire thinks the holiday starts with the flight WORDS: AMY BONIFAS. ILLUSTRATION: ASSA ARIYOSHI. PHOTOGRAPHY: GETTY IMAGES, SHUTTERSTOCK Stewart McLurg from Hornchurch would rather fly cheap and spend big on the ground W hen it comes to budget flights, I’ve never had a bad time. With so much competition, brands have had to up their game and, because of that, check-in times and customer service have improved, and some airlines have become trusted household names. The choice of destinations has also expanded, with new countries popping up all over the place. There isn’t that much difference in legroom either. The best-value flights can be at pretty unforgiving hours, so I opt for a cheap, super-early flight out as it’s part of the excitement, and a more sensibly timed one back – the cost balances out. To make sure it’s as comfy as possible, I bring my own home comforts, such as eye masks and ear plugs. Once I’m there, what I’ve saved on plane fare I’ll use to upgrade our accommodation. I’ll also save money for food, as we like to eat out when we’re away. Next up, Barcelona! S tepping on to the plane signals the start of the holiday for me, which is why I’m more than happy to pay for premium flights. I love all the thoughtful extras you get; I’ve had lip balm, face cream… even a calming spray! And you can’t beat toasting the start of your break with a glass of fizz – much better than an overpriced coffee and soggy sandwich. My husband, Paul, is a pilot and has a bad back, which is another reason we don’t fly budget. He’s at his most excited in the air, whereas I’m a bit of a nervous flyer, so we both feel more at ease when we’re comfortable (extra legroom can do wonders). I rarely sleep on planes so I find the in-flight films help pass the time. The food options are better too – great as my 12-year-old son can be a bit fussy. For special occasions we’ve chosen to upgrade the experience even more – going through to an airport lounge is amazing and the service is always great. It makes us feel like rock stars, if only for the flight duration. The price of John Galliano’s Oscar dress, modelled by Nicole Kidman in 1997. This year’s Oscars are on 28 February. Real-life Valentines We’ve heard about famous other halves shelling out silly money for Valentine’s pressies (Angelina Jolie bought Brad a 200-year-old olive tree for $18,500), but non-celebrities can be just as surprising with their gestures 1 The way to a man’s heart According to imgur.com, one caring girl cooked her boyfriend a month’s worth of individual meals and stocked his freezer with them so he wouldn’t starve when she was out of town. 2 Aw, shucks US gossip king Perez Hilton tells of one besotted boyfriend who bought his girlfriend a bag of oysters to open – that each contained a pearl. 3 Proposal through the medium of dance A twinkle-toed chap hired theoneromance.com to create a flash mob of dancers so he could join in with them and surprise his girlfriend with a proposal bang in the heart of London’s Covent Garden (she said yes). 6 SAINSBURYSBANK.CO.UK/MONEY-MATTERS 04-07_Ticklist2_V5b_R1.indd 6 13/01/2016 10:22 500K $1.6M The most expensive bicycle ever, the Butterfly Trek Madone, ridden by Lance Armstrong in the 2009 Tour de France. The promotion features across two versions of this magazine Why do presidents, CEOs and business tycoons dress the same way every day? Say hello to ‘decision fatigue’, the analysis paralysis that could be holding you back. Our brains can only cope with so many decisions each day – what to eat, what to watch on TV and when to reply to emails. So, removing one choice – what to wear – could reap benefits in productivity, freeing your mind to concentrate on more important things. There’s a money-saving aspect too; plan out your work wardrobe in advance and you won’t waste cash on clothes you’ll never wear. Think about the famous ‘one-look’ success stories – Apple’s Steve Jobs and his black turtleneck, President Obama’s dark blue suit, Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg and his grey T-shirt. With a total net worth in excess of $46bn, there’s something in it. It’s still early days, but hi-tech connected luggage could be the future of travel According to a recent report in the Guardian, clever cases kitted out with GPS tracking and messaging are set to be the next big thing. That means your suitcase will be able to text you with its location – “Pick me up at carousel three, please” – or let you know straightaway if someone’s tampering with it. The travel tech doesn’t stop there. At BEST-CASE SCENARIO SARTORIAL SAVVY the 2015 Travel Goods Showcase in Las Vegas, manufacturers presented a bag that comes with a biometric, fingerprintrecognition lock and a digital scale sensor in the wheels; a case that auto-locks if it gets more than 30m away from your mobile; and a bag that goes straight from the bike lane to the boardroom by converting from a waterproof backpack to a briefcase. Costing around $700 though, we’ll have to wait for the prices to drop. AT HOME Savvy ways to spend and save on everyday essentials IF YOU ONLY DO ONE THING… GROW YOUR OWN HERBS WORDS: THE GARDENING GURUS AT FENNELANDFERN.CO.UK, THE STYLISH GARDENING BLOG. PHOTOGRAPHY: CLARE MILLER When it comes to herbs, fresh is best and free is even better. To help get your greenfingered groove on, we asked the gardening experts at fennelandfern.co.uk which you should plant to jazz up your summer plates, whether you have a little space on the windowsill or a free corner in the garden. NO OUTDOOR SPACE? Don’t have a garden but still want your food to pack a punch? Copy the chef’s secret weapon and grow your own microgreens (baby herbs) on a windowsill. These cost a fortune in the shops, but they’re a home-grower’s dream. They need very little soil and don’t demand full sunlight; the best ones are coriander, thyme, mint and sage. GARDEN GANG For people with outdoor space, now is the time to plant tender herb seeds such as basil, marjoram and coriander. Sow them indoors and move them outside after the risk of frost has passed. Do the same with hardier herbs like mint, oregano, rosemary, thyme and sage; these can live outside all year round once they’re established though. Tasty. Go on… get your hands dirty SMART MOVE Grow unusual herbs that you won’t easily find in shops – orange thyme is great with duck, while lovage loves pork and tomatoes. SAINSBURYSBANK.CO.UK/MONEY-MATTERS 09_At_Home_Opener_V3.indd 2 9 13/01/2016 13:13 H O M E : H O T T O P IC HOW DO YOU SAVE FOR THE BIG THINGS IN LIFE, LIKE BUYING A HOUSE? Everyone knows that mums really do know best. To celebrate Mother’s Day on 6 March, writer Cherry Casey met Mary Hughes, 91, her daughter, Penny Murray, 65, and granddaughter, Abby Simpson, 32, to discover the money tips they swear by… Mary That’s something that’s changed so much. We decided to rent until we were in our late forties! It felt like an exorbitant amount of money then – I don’t know how Abby’s generation can do it. Penny I actually bought my first home before Mum did. But it was still difficult because in those days mortgage lenders would only take a third of a woman’s wage into account. My then-husband and I had been living in Chiswick but had to move to Northamptonshire to find something we could afford to buy. Abby That’s terrible! My boyfriend Mark and I would love to buy somewhere next year. I want to own a house before we have children so we can paint the S ’ M U M THE nursery without worrying. I’m looking at first-time buyer schemes at the moment, such as the government help-to-buy ISA. WHAT’S THE BEST MONEYSAVING TIP YOU PICKED UP FROM YOUR MUM? Penny I’m surprised by how few people realise how much you can save on food shopping. If you get cheaper cuts of meat, like beef shin or pork shoulder, and cook them for longer, you can save a fortune. That’s definitely something I picked up from Mum. Abby These two are amazing cooks and I’ve learned from them that cooking from scratch is much cheaper – and you end up eating better food too. 10 SAINSBURYSBANK.CO.UK/MONEY-MATTERS 10-11_Mums_The_Word_V5_R1.indd 10 13/01/2016 12:43 ARE YOU SPLURGERS OR SAVERS IN THE MAIN? Abby We’re all very good at spending – it’s a family trait – and these two spoil me absolutely rotten. Penny Mum spoiled me when I was younger and I like to do the same for my children. When Abby’s car needed fixing recently, I paid for it. I don’t have the resources to give her huge amounts of money, so I like to save it up to spend on her as and when I can. Mary I like to spend too, and use my credit card all the time. It’s always paid off by Direct Debit every month as I hate outstanding bills of any sort. D R O W ANY FAMILY BUDGETING TRICKS THAT YOU USE TO KEEP OUT OF THE RED? Mary We didn’t have a lot of money when we were first married, but I didn’t have a budget as such. We just made sure we never spent more than we had and never built up any debt because I couldn’t bear the idea of paying interest! Penny I’m the same as Mum in that respect. I use credit cards and store cards to get more points, but pay them off as soon as the statement comes in. I keep every credit card slip and check each statement carefully. I’ve spotted fraudulent transactions three times that way. Abby I do have debts unfortunately, but I think it’s different for our generation – student loans and credit cards are so ‘normal’ that interest is just something you accept. I’ve got better with budgeting though, and now have a spreadsheet where I put what’s going out when – TV licence, car insurance – so I know how much I have left to spend each month. Sites such as notonthehighstreet.com and etsy. com have everything from personalised custom portraits to cookery courses. If you’re not so close with the new Mr and Mrs, get in quick and buy a cheaper item from their list before someone else does. Blogger Emma Bradley of mumssavvysavings.com likes the good things in life, for a great price. That goes for travel too BILLION The amount Brits spent on attending weddings in ** FIND A BETTER DEAL ON A MID-PRICED ITEM It’s a golden rule, but one that many forget in the heat of buying a pressie: always shop around for a deal and then track the price via sites such as lovesales.com in case it drops further. If you’re going down the voucher route, buy cut-price vouchers at zeek.me (often for as much as 10% cheaper). You can use Nectar points or extra promotional discounts (visit vouchercodes.co.uk) for more savings before finally buying. CROWDFUND A BIG GIFT Join with other wedding guests to chip in for a more expensive gift such as the honeymoon by using sites such as shareagift.com or patchworkpresent. com. With both of these, you can have a lot of fun creating a beautiful, inspiring page, then select one guest to collect all the donations to give on the big day. The average cost of a stag do for British men* THE OUTFIT Tu fashion editor Torri Mundell on how to look super stylish, no matter how many weddings you go to this year GETTING THERE Travelling to weddings can become quite expensive, so car share where you can to split the cost of getting there. Consider hiring a minibus if there’s a group of you going from the same area. If no one wants the responsibility of driving, then booking train tickets well in advance – around 12 weeks is the optimum – can save you loads. If you travel regularly with a friend or partner, a shared railcard (twotogether-railcard. co.uk) can save a third on rail fares. Don’t ignore first-class tickets. On occasions, I’ve found these for the same price as standard. In addition to that feeling of ‘luxury’, you can tuck into the complimentary food and save on lunch. SUITS YOU, SIR Men have it easy as a classic suit never goes out of style, while women’s trends change all the time. Capitalise on this by snapping up a well-cut suit in a versatile mid-tone grey or blue. Make it last for a few years by mixing it up with current accessories. It’s not just about getting a fancy new tie – try a pocket square, belt, cuff links, braces and a waistcoat. FOR THE LADIES For a quick win, take a dress or outfit that you already own, but throw in something new to reinvent your look. Sparkly shoes are an easy fix while oversize earrings make more of a style statement. Alternatively, transform last year’s dress with a sumptuous jacket (think metallic, embroidered or sparkly). If you’re the type who never wears an outfit twice, try designer dress rental sites like girlmeetsdress.com or chic-by-choice.com. I once got my hands on a Victoria Beckham dress for £70! They can be a real stress-saver, delivery times are super quick and you can order a couple of dresses to try on and just pay for the one you like. The average amount women will splash out on a new wedding outfit † STAYING THERE Places on airbnb.co.uk are cheaper than a hotel and can accommodate larger groups – great if you just need somewhere to get changed beforehand and crash out after the do. If your wedding calendar is really full, you could put your own place on a site like ownersdirect. co.uk to cash in while you’re away. SAVING FOR A BIG DAY? Sainsbury’s Fixed Rate Saver offers a fixed rate of interest for 1-3 years so you know exactly what return you’ll get. See p22 or visit sainsburysbank.co.uk/saving. It might be time to save loads of dough (sorry) by doing it yourself. Here are three ways to spend less on your favourite takeaway: Pizza dough is actually really easy to make and it freezes well, so always make double. Divide into portions then wrap tightly in cling film and freeze. Take it out to defrost in the morning and it will be ready to roll by dinner time. Leftover parmesan? Add it to your homemade pizza dough for extra flavour. If you don’t want to make your own dough, try using wraps, naan breads or even crumpets instead. Spread with a little pizza sauce and scatter over your chosen topping, then bake until bubbling. One assignment involved tracking the elusive blueeyed black lemur in the Sahamalaza Peninsula in the rugged north-west. Along with a group of scientists, I trekked for two days to a rustic camp in the jungle. My bedroom was a tent; my bathroom a cluster of shaded rock pools. It was blissfully simple. But there was one stumbling block (literally). One of the pools was fady. If you dipped a toe in it, it was thought you’d evoke evil spirits and invite a lifetime of bad luck. Every evening after trekking through rainforests in tropical heat, I’d head to the ‘bathroom’ for a refreshing splash, being very careful to avoid this unmentionable pool. But given my naturally clumsy disposition, it was only a matter of time before I tripped on a loose stone and fell face-first straight into it. I’m still waiting for a visit from those spirits. His owner, a daydreaming youth, was close behind. As we got closer, the animal seemed edgy. Breaking free from his shackles, he began to trot, run, and then sprint in our direction. ‘Cow!’ someone yelled. I felt a sharp thwack like a bolt of lightning to my side. Next thing I knew, I was being thrown into a bush by a fellow birdwatcher. I came within an inch of being crushed to a pulp. PHOTOGRAPHY: COURTESY OF LOVEHOMESWAP.COM, SHUTTERSTOCK. *ALWAYS CHECK WITH YOUR INSURANCE PROVIDER THAT YOU’RE COVERED FOR HOUSE SWAPPING E xchanging homes with a stranger might sound daunting, but the drastically reduced cost makes it well worth it – the average home swapper can save up to £2,000. Home exchange clubs have been around since the 1950s, but swapping really peaked in 2011 when the tough economic climate spurred more than three million Brits into ditching the hotel and living like a local in someone else’s home. The trend shows no signs of slowing down, with one in five people having signed up to a holiday swap shop*. A GLOBAL FAMILY ADVENTURE On 8 March 2014, Dan and Clair Prince quit their jobs and left their home for an amazing adventure – to travel the world with their four children for as long as possible, without spending a penny on accommodation along the way. “It was a decision we agonised over, but it was obvious that we weren’t spending enough family time together. We wanted to slow down to enjoy life while the kids were still young,” says Dan, 38. Eighteen months on, and they’re still travelling. Their HOUSE SWAPPING 101 secret? Using the sharing economy and signing up to lovehomeswap.com to home swap their way around the world on a budget. “The average British family spends up to two months’ salary on their summer holiday, a good percentage of that cost going on accommodation,” says Clair. “As a family of six, hotel bills rack up when paying for two rooms, so we thought we’d try another way.” The ‘other way’ paid off, meaning the Princes have so far home swapped their way through Cambodia, Croatia, Dubai, England, Italy, Australia, New Zealand, France, Switzerland, Thailand and the USA. They’re still going strong and estimate that home swapping has saved them around £35,000 (about £200 a night) in accommodation. For Kaitlyn, 10, Sophia, 8 and 4-year-old twins Lauren and Samuel, the experience has changed them enormously. They’ve grown in confidence and learned about history, geography and other cultures through their own personal connections rather than in the classroom. “We’re spending so much time with each other at such a precious period in our children’s lives, it’s strengthened our family bonds immeasurably,” says Clair. lovehomeswap.com boasts more than 75,000 homes in 160 countries worldwide FANCY A TRIP ABROAD?
