Watery wonders!
Lake Königssee
Surrounded by towering rock
cliffs, the lake - emerald green
and silent - is set in one of the
most impressive landscapes in
Germany. It is perhaps for this
reason that so many visitors
come to Königssee year after
year. This narrow, fjord-like
lake is 8 kms long (5 miles), up
to 1 km wide (3/4 mile) and
lies 602 meters (2,000ft)
above sea level. With a maximum depth of 190 meters
(650 ft), Lake Koenigssee
retains its cold temperature
even during the hottest time
of the year. Leave the noise

Now that’s steep!
Wimbachklamm Gorge
At the entrance of an aweinspiring high valley at the
foot of the Watzmann mountain, lies the Wimbachklamm:
a geologically impressive
attraction as well as a splendid act of nature.
Hiking, gazing, staring in
awe: Gorges and slot-canyons
such as Aschauerklamm at
Schneizlreuth reveal fantastic
perspectives that you won’t
soon forget.
Idyllic Almbachklamm near
Marktschellenberg with its
impressive waterfalls is one of
the most beautiful gorges in
Bavaria.
At the entrance of the
Almbachklamm gorge you’ll
find the oldest marble ball
mill in Germany. Ever since
1683 marble rocks have been
ground down and polished
into gleaming marble balls!

Everywhere in the
Berchtesgadener Land mills
and dams can be seen, such
as Röthelbachklause near
Bad Reichenhall – one of the
very oldest dams – or the
Theresienklause above
Almbachklamm gorge. These
historical monuments show
us the industry and technology of earlier times. Garnering
the power of water enabled
settlers to mine salt, grind
grain by means of millstones,
as well as generating power
or logging in areas too hard
to reach without the transport of water. Many mills and
dams are now being lovingly
restored by various organizations and honorary volunteers.
These are ideal excursions for
the young and old alike who,
today, are still fascinated with
this narrow link between
technology and nature.
The hike from Weissbach to
Schneizlreuth through
Weissbachschlucht is
definitely worthwhile, though
recommended only in dry
weather. Over bridges and
under rock cliffs – the wild
Weissbach River follows the
path all the way to the bottom.
For those in the mood for a
gorge adventure, the Speiktal
valley and Speikschlucht
gorge near Bayerisch Gmain
await you! Climbing up ladders and stairs cut out of the
rock – one arrives at the
Speikbachbett. Here the valley
ends in an invincible waterfall.
Schellenberg Ice Cave
For those in search of gorges
and dams, sturdy shoes are a
prerequisite. If you are interested in checking out the ice
caves (1,500m / 4,920ft) on
the Untersberg mountain, not
only will you need hiking
boots but warm clothing as
well, because the deeper into
Germany’s largest ice caves
you go the colder it gets!

In spite of global warming,
the Blaueisgletscher – Blue
Ice Glacier – still exists today,
thanks to its north-facing
location. After reaching the
Blaueishütte – Blue Ice Hut –
glacier enthusiasts can continue hiking up to this unique

The Eagle’s Nest
(Kehlsteinhaus) (1,834m /
6,017ft) –
nor at the time, the Eagle’s
Nest was spared being blown
up.
A historic viewpoint high
above the Berchtesgaden
area: Panoramic views of up
to 200 kilometers can be
enjoyed by those visiting the
Eagle’s Nest.
Today the Eagle’s Nest is open
to the public and can be seen
in its original form. Since
1960 it has been in the hands
of the Berchtesgaden tourist
board and leased out as a
mountain top restaurant.
Eagle’s Nest
Its construction ordered by
Martin Bormann, the so-called
Eagle’s Nest teahouse was
offered to Adolf Hitler for his
50th birthday with the aim of
using it for representation
purposes for official guests.
The challenging construction
of the Eagle’s Nest was completed in just 13 months
including the road, Germany’s
highest.
The road from Obersalzberg
leading up to the Eagle’s Nest
upper bus parking area is a
unique feat of engineering
seen nowhere else in the
world. The great difference in
elevation is reached with only
one hairpin bend, thereby traversing the steep northwest
face of the Kehlstein mountain twice.
In 1952 the road was closed
to the public and the special
mountain buses were put into
operation for the transportation of guests to this unique
destination.
Hitler himself seldom used the
Eagle’s Nest, finding the
excursion up to the top too
unnerving due to his fear of
heights. After the War, thanks

parking area, a hand blasted
tunnel takes you 124 meters
(406ft) through the mountainside to an ornate elevator
lined with shiny brass. In just
41 seconds you are transported another 124 meters up
through the mountain and
into the building itself.
In 1960 the Bavarian State
created a trust fund through
which the Eagle’s Nest is
administrated. The proceeds
are used for charitable
purposes.

(Salzbergwerk)
At a time when
Berchtesgaden was an independent principality, salt was
a valuable commodity treated
like gold and therefore few
people were allowed into the
mines. Today things have
changed! Experience this
underground realm for yourself where the “white gold” is
hidden. These mines have
been in continuous operation
since 1517!
A tour through the Salt Mines
is fun for the whole family:
Slides and smiles
dressed in traditional miners
attire, a special train takes
you 650 meters through a
tunnel and into a gigantic
underground hall. Your guide,
an experienced miner, will
explain all of the ins and outs
of mountain salt mining
Down a gleaming wooden
slide the journey takes you
deeper into the depths of the
mine. For those who prefer to
walk, a convenient footpath
can be taken instead.
Glide along a glittering underground salt lake on a small
barge onto other shores
accompanied by a mystical
light and sound show. Here
you will see the famous bronze
pump built by Georg von
Reichenbach, which was used
to transport the brine up and
across the mountains for processing. Stepping into a funicular, one is transported up
into another part of the mine
where the tunnels are adorned with marble plaques. From
here the mountain train
awaits to transport you back
out into the light of day.

The drive on Germany’s highest panoramic toll road is an

road takes one up to an elevation of 1,600 meters
(5,600ft) and lies with its
summit partially in Austria as

The Rossfeldstrasse affords

Berchtesgaden landscapes
and over the 1,000 meter
deep Salzachtal valley, as well
as to Mozart’s city of Salzburg
below. Easy to reach by either
car or bus, it is also well loved

Eagle’s Nest Road
(Kehlsteinstrasse)
The Eagle’s Nest road is considered a unique masterpiece of
architecture and a feat of
engineering. The great difference in elevation (740m /
2,400ft) from Obersalzberg to
the Eagle’s Nest upper parking area is bridged via a
‘perched’ road featuring only
one hairpin curve switching
back along the steep north
wall of the Kehlstein mountain.

began. Because the snow and

The Salt Museum in the Old

Berchtesgaden and the surrounding areas of Bischofswiesen, Marktschellenberg,
Ramsau and Schönau am
Königssee, offer almost unlimited winter pleasure for
skiers, snowboarders, sledders
and for all snow lovers alike.
The ski areas in the Berchtesgadener Land are in such
close proximity, they can be
reached in almost no time at
all by either car or by the local
bus service (RVO).
Over 50 kilometers of diverse
and varied slopes await skiers
and snowboarders at an elevation ranging from 600 to
1,800 meters (2,000 to
6,000ft) that include Gutshof
at Obersalzberg, Hochschwarzeck and the
Rossfeld family ski areas. The
state performance center at
Götschen will lure those
downhill skiers and snowboarders who are looking for
thrills! Guaranteed to offer
real skiing pleasure for beginners and expert skiers alike is
the Jenner ski area above
Lake Königssee where a twoman cable car whisks you
from the valley to the top of
the peak.
Looking for a great sled run?
Try the Obersalzberg natural sled run which is accessible from the top of the
Obersalzberg cable car. The
4km-long sledding run will

groomed cross country ski
trails will not only keep you in

the cross country skiing
center at Aschauer Weiher
alone. Here you will find well
groomed trails over glistening
snowy meadows and through
frosted forests. If you like to
travel light, cross country ski
equipment can be rented
here as well. For those who
prefer a higher perspective,
the Hochschwarzeck cross
country ski area offers breathtaking views over mountain
vistas at the elevation of
1,100 meters (3,600ft).

JOIN US for a historical account of the construction and use of the
Eagle’s Nest, a unique mountaintop conference center, as well as a
history-intensive tour of the Obersalzberg area, the site of Hitler’s
former residence and second seat of power. A visit to the Documentation Center including the underground fortress-like bunker system
provides insight into the monumental scale of the former headquarters compound perched in the Berchtesgaden Alps.
