rejoice over you” (Isaiah 62:5).
G
od is preparing a place to receive those who love and believe in Him through Jesus Christ, so that they may spend
eternity in His presence. The sacrificial gift of Jesus Christ
on the cross should be worn by Christians like the most exquisite diamond, reflecting the love of God and His promise of eternity – for the
entire world to see.
Accepting Jesus Christ and the power of His name, brings blessings
of promise and eternal life in heavenly places. As the bride of Christ,
we must prepare ourselves so that we are ready when He returns. Spiritual intimacy with Christ through relationship and meditating on the
Word of God, enables us to know Him and to share in His sufferings.
God has chosen us to be with the Bridegroom, Jesus Christ, for eternity. We must love and know Him, so that we are prepared when He
returns and may dwell with Him forever.
We the staff of VISION magazine, pray that you continue to prepare
for the coming of the Bridegroom, so that you may dwell with Him forever in heavenly places. May His Spirit of unity anoint and bless your
life as you prepare for His return.

T
he will of God is for us to be unified –
headed in the same direction with the
same goal, purpose and heart. When
everybody is doing what God has called them
to do, He is able to move in supernatural ways.
There are countless Scriptures where God did the
supernatural when people were united.
Connected believers – when we are
connected, unity does not mean uniformity.
Everybody has gifts and a call to participate and
do what God has assigned them to do. Operating
in unity can have amazing results – disunity can
have devastating results (Psalm 133:1).
Contagious benefits – “It is like the precious
oil upon the head, Running down on the beard,
The beard of Aaron, Running down on the edge
of his garments, it is like the dew of Hermon,
Descending upon the mountains of Zion …”
(Psalm 133:2-3).
David, the writer of this psalm, compares
unity to the oil that is poured upon the head and
runs down the beard of Aaron to the edge of
his garments. This illustrates how the anointing
of God can flow in the body of Christ. Being
unified allows God to move and results in
contagious benefits. The elements of those
benefits are power, position and the person.
Power – the oil is a symbol of the Spirit
of God. It represents the power and presence
of the Holy Spirit. The oil conveys to us that
God wants His power to flow in our lives.
When we are unified, God has the capacity and
willingness to pour an anointing upon us that
cannot be experienced by disunity. The unusual,
supernatural power of God can be demonstrated
when we function in unity.
Position – Aaron was appointed and anointed
to be the first high priest. The assignment was
given to him by his brother Moses, through
instruction from God. The oil was poured
upon the high priest’s head and flowed all over
him. It ran down from his beard to the edge of

his garments. God gives us garments for our
assignment, and through unity will pour the oil
of blessings over our lives.
Person – before being appointed the first high
priest, God used Aaron, along with Moses, to
introduce the supernatural provision of manna
to the people. He also used Aaron to hold up
Moses’ weary arms in the midst of a battle.
Aaron demonstrated a good attitude by standing
alongside Moses so that the people of God
would prevail.
Although Aaron had commendable moments,
he also yielded to the cravings of the people.
When Moses went up to the mountain to be
with God, Aaron took leadership in gathering
gold and building a golden calf that the people
worshiped. When Moses came down from the

mountain, Aaron blamed the building of the calf
and worship of it on the people.
God chose a person with sins and flaws to
be the high priest. Aaron made mistakes, but
God chose to use someone where he could
change their life, posture and behavior. If God
can choose Aaron, He can also choose us for
anointing and elevation, in spite of our sins and
failings.

The Bridegroom Is Coming

“… as the bridegroom rejoices over the bride, so shall your
God rejoice over you” (Isaiah 62:5).
G
od has chosen us to be with the Bridegroom, Jesus Christ, for eternity. The day
that you gave your heart and life to Christ
announced the engagement. Isaiah 62:5 says,
“… as the bridegroom rejoices over the bride, so
shall your God rejoice over you.”
God desires that we join Him in heavenly
matrimony. It is important that we prepare for
the coming of the Bridegroom by being wise and
ready. Matthew 25:1-3 speaks of 10 virgins – five
wise, but also five that were foolish – “Then the
kingdom of heaven shall be likened to ten virgins
who took their lamps and went out to meet the
bridegroom. Now five of them were wise, and five
were foolish. Those who were foolish took their
lamps and took no oil with them, but the wise
took oil in their vessels with their lamps.” While
the foolish virgins were on their way to buy oil
for their lamps, the bridegroom came. The wise
ones were ready and went in with him to the
wedding, and the door was shut.
As we prepare for the coming of the
Bridegroom, we are commanded by God to
“Take heed that no one deceives you. For many
will come in My name, saying, ‘I am He,’ and
will deceive many” (Mark 13:5-6). God calls for
us to rise above the deceivers and hold on to His
name. We must be on guard at all times. We must
make sure that we do not allow the temptations
of the world to cause us to miss the opportunity
to be joined in eternity with Christ; that our door
is not shut.
“Watch therefore, for you know neither the
day nor the hour in which the Son of Man is
coming” (Matthew 25:13). God wants us to be
wise, prepared and watchful for the coming of
the Bridegroom, so that we may be joined in
heavenly matrimony through Jesus Christ. 

“I will come again and receive you to Myself …” (John 14:3).
W
hat great assurance to know that
Jesus will come again and receive
us to Himself. John 14:2-3 says,
“… I go to prepare a place for
you. And if I go and prepare a place for you,
I will come again and receive you to Myself;
that where I am, there you may be also.” That
is something I look forward to, because it is the
greatest honor that anyone could ever imagine
– well beyond his or her greatest dreams. It is
even more amazing that God is so intimate and
personal with us, and will do for us that which
we do not deserve.
Have you ever heard the phrase, “Heaven
is a prepared place for a prepared people”? In
order to properly prepare, we must first shed
everything that represents this sinful world. As
Christians, we must always remind ourselves
that this ever-changing world is not our home.
Therefore, we must allow God to continue to

change our hearts, mindsets and desires so that
they fit His blueprint and plans. And when the
Bridegroom comes, His bride (the church) will
have no spot, wrinkle or blemish.
The trials that we go through in life prepare
us, so that we are ready for the reward of putting
our faith and trust in God and living according to
His Word. The reward and treasure that God has
for us cannot be compared to what is on earth,
because it far exceeds everything that exists in
the world. “For I consider that the sufferings of
this present time are not worthy to be compared
with the glory which shall be revealed in us”
(Romans 8:18). Our sufferings cannot be
compared to the glory that shall be revealed to
us.
It is important for us to be in the family of God
through Jesus Christ, who is preparing a place
for us and desires to receive us to Himself for
eternity. 

The Cost of Your
Diamond

“You were bought at a price …” (1 Corinthians 7:23).
I
n the hours leading to Jesus’ crucifixion,
Jesus was spat upon, mocked, taunted
and flogged. He was flogged so badly that
He was unrecognizable. With a crown of
thorns piercing his head and his body already
weakened from the floggings, Jesus struggled to
carry His own cross, which was extremely heavy.
On Calvary, the executioners drove nails into His
wrists and feet at points designed to cause severe
pain. Jesus felt every wound and heard every taunt.
Crucifixion was a slow, agonizing death. He was
treated like someone despicable so that we could
have life.
The graphic details of Christ’s suffering make a
gruesome picture. We should pause from time to
time to consider the torture and pain He suffered
to deliver us from sin. It should give us a greater
appreciation of His sacrifice and what we mean
to Him. Jesus took our great shame on Himself
and turned something wicked and ugly – our sins
– into a beautiful diamond of hope, salvation and
everlasting life.
Wedding rings symbolize a man and woman’s
union before God. The rings are worn to publicly
acknowledge marriage and to inform others that
they are no longer available as a potential mate.
Brides and grooms take time and care in selecting
the most beautiful and exquisite diamond rings
for each other. There is no comparison, however,
between the purchase of the most expensive and
exquisite diamond, to the price Jesus paid with His
own life. However, our lives can shine brighter
than the most exquisite diamond when we allow
the light and love of God to reflect through us.
Our diamond signifies our new life in Christ.
It signifies our belief that He died on the cross
and rose from the grave for us. Therefore, let’s be
faithful to Jesus Christ, our Bridegroom, and with
grateful acceptance wear our diamond for the entire
world to see. 

“Blessed is He who comes in the name of the LORD!” (Mark 11:9).
S
ome people believe that names are
important. They say a name can define you
and determine your personality or level
of intelligence. When I was a child, I recall being
teased because of my name. One time in particular,
I remember other children pointing out a male child
whose last name was the same as my first. They
jokingly teased that if we were to marry, I would
have the same first and last name. It just goes to
show that even children pay attention to names.
In certain cultures, taking the name of one’s
betrothed brings about immediate royalty and
privilege. The same happens to us when we accept
Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior in our lives. A
heavenly matrimony takes place when we give our
life to Christ. Our new life in Him brings about
immediate privilege through the power of His
name.
There is power and healing in the name of Jesus
Christ. During biblical times, even non-believers
knew about the privilege associated with the name
of Jesus. They attempted to prohibit the use of

His name so that healing and salvation would not
take place. “So they called them and commanded
them not to speak at all nor teach in the name of
Jesus. But Peter and John answered and said to
them, “Whether it is right in the sight of God to
listen to you more than to God, you judge. For we
cannot but speak the things which we have seen and
heard” (Acts 4:18-20).
There is great significance associated with the
name of Jesus Christ. When we come to Him, we
receive the privilege of being able to speak and
call upon His name at any time. As Christians,
the Word of God makes it clear that He will never
leave nor forsake us – that we have a Savior to call
upon in times of trouble. “And whatever you ask
in My name, that I will do, that the Father may be
glorified in the Son” (John 14:13).
As Christians, we must recognize the priceless
gift of salvation and being able to call upon the
name of Jesus Christ. May we continue to pray,
praise and worship – being mindful that blessed is
He who comes in the name of the Lord. 

A Marriage
Made in Heaven

“Father, I desire that they also whom You gave Me may be
with Me where I am …” (John 17:24).
G
od’s creation of man, perfectly
illustrates His desire for us to be in
relationship with Him, as well as
with others. In fact, we are designed to have
relationships with God and others.
Unfortunately, when we examine the world
around us, the beauty portrayed in God’s
original design for marriage and relationships
has, in many instances, been clouded by a
sea of broken commitments and division. An
institution of continuous unity conceived by
the hand of God has been tainted by divorce
and isolation – not to mention those who
have turned away from the truth of God’s
existence.
In examining the institution of marriage
according to Scripture, we see that it is
a commitment that cannot be broken – a
covenant made before God. Marriage has
no expiration date – other than “til death do
you part,” and even then, those who have
accepted Jesus Christ are eternally joined to
Him in a prepared and heavenly place.
Jesus Christ, the eternal lover of my soul,
reminds me that, “And if I go and prepare a
place for you, I will come again and receive
you to Myself; that where I am, there you
may be also” (John 14:3).
I am also reminded of the Bridegroom’s
undying and limitless love, “I will not leave
you nor forsake you” (Joshua 1:5).
“…We shall not all sleep, but we shall all
be changed—in a moment, in the twinkling of
an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet
will sound, and the dead will be raised
incorruptible, and we shall be changed. For
this corruptible must put on incorruption and
this mortal must put on immortality”
(1 Corinthians 15:51-53).
I must admit that I am anxiously awaiting
the coming of the Bridegroom. Now that’s a
marriage made in heaven! 

Intimacy

With the
Bridegroom

“that I may Know Him …” (Philippians 3:10).
W
hen I think of intimacy, I think of
closeness, knowing each other, and
understanding each other,” explains
Carolyn Tatem, a leader in the Couples Ministry
and author of the book “Marriage from A to Z:
Principles for a Successful Marriage.” In this
passage, Tatem defines intimacy between a groom
and his bride. This definition can also apply to a
Christian’s relationship with the Bridegroom, Jesus
Christ.
Have you ever thought of God as a supreme
being that is unreachable and distant? Or perhaps
you have spent time with God for years, but find
yourself in an unusual, unique situation where you
no longer sense His presence. Regardless of what
you may think or feel during these moments, God
is near and desires to have a close relationship
with you.
Jesus says, “Behold, I stand at the door and

knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the
door, I will come in to him and dine with him, and
he with Me” (Revelation 3:20).
Jesus also proclaims, “If anyone loves Me, he
will keep My word; and My Father will love him,
and We will come to him and make Our home with
him” (John 14:23).
When we feel overwhelmed, Jesus says “Come
to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and
I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28).
Jesus Christ’s desire for intimacy and close
relationship is evidenced by these promises.
It is often through trials that the believer grows
in intimacy with God, by experiencing His
power in new ways. In December 2008, First
Baptist Church of Glenarden members Gene and
LaShan Solomon experienced the impact of job
loss. Solomon says, “I was shocked. I thought
my job was secure. My next thought was, ‘How
am I going to tell my wife?’ What about my
financial obligations?” God used this experience
to strengthen Solomon’s relationship with Him.
Solomon further explains, “I had to believe and
fully trust God to meet all of my family’s needs. I
realized the lack of time I had been spending with
God. Having the extra time allowed me to develop
more of an intimate relationship with God and to
take the emphasis off of me. I had to understand
that it’s not about me.”
How did the Solomons become more intimate
with God during this season of their lives?
How do they continue to maintain an intimate
relationship through Christ? LaShan Solomon
says, “In addition to going to church on Sunday,
I make a conscious effort to read His Word daily.
I have joined various women’s ministries and I
stay connected with other women who are also
striving to enhance their relationship with Christ.
I believe that how you develop and maintain your
relationship with Christ will determine the way
you handle the ups and downs in your life. I ask
God for direction and clarity daily.”
The Solomons’ season shifted in 2010. Pastor
John K. Jenkins Sr. prophetically declared 2010 to
be First Baptist’s year of “Beyond, Beyond,” based
on Ephesians 3:20, “Now to Him who is able to do
exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or
think, according to the power that works in us.”
God blessed Solomon with a new job. He saw
God’s ability to provide for the family and to use
his bride to keep him optimistic.
“Prior to this experience, I always knew God
provided. But during my season of unemployment,
my faith was put to the test. I also learned a lot
about my bride. My bride always encouraged me.
Neighbors would ask, ‘How is your wife doing?’
I would always respond, ‘She’s doing wonderful.
The God we serve provides.’ I’ve learned to
rejoice in the valley, be still and wait on God,” said
Solomon.
Intimacy is offered by Christ and obtained from
close relationship with Him. Accept Christ’s
invitation to a close relationship. Allow Him to
strengthen your relationship, especially during
the low seasons of life. Seek intimacy with the
Bridegroom and acknowledge that He is all you
need.
Jesus says, “… lo, I am with you always, even to
the end of the age” (Matthew 28:20). 

From Trauma
to
Triumph

G
od used a childhood trauma in Minister
Milton K. Holt’s life to hone a passion
which now saves souls for God’s Kingdom and frees men from the bondage of sexual
sin. Minister Holt was molested at age seven by
a brother and a sister. The experience tainted his
sexuality.
Women were the prey which he used to conquer
and reaffirm his manhood. He ran the streets of
Washington, D.C., selling drugs and operating in
illegal street enterprises. “I was in the game all
the way,” he says. He used his proceeds to attract

women. But along the way, he was hurt by a woman – something he did not believe to be possible.
He felt this was God’s way of tugging at his
heart. He came from a family of believers who
always encouraged him to go to church, but instead
he was doing his thing.
During this time, an indictment was filed against
him and his illegal enterprises. He completely
surrendered himself to God and his life was transformed. His negative passion was redirected to
street ministry. Minister Holt said, “I saw how God
used my influence for His Kingdom. I have always
been a relational person. I knew a lot of people.
God used my street aggressiveness to witness
about Jesus. People got saved and lives were
transformed.”
Minister Holt was never interested in reading
and couldn’t read well, yet he was passionate
about studying the Word of God. It was a struggle
and the more he read, the more he realized
that God was granting him wisdom and
understanding.
Minister Holt referred to Jeremiah 1:5, where
God said, “Before I formed you in the womb I
knew you; before you were born I sanctified you;
I ordained you a prophet to the nations.” God
revealed to him that his experiences were meant
for His good. However, the molestation was still
buried deep in his psyche and did not reveal itself
until he went to counseling after committing adultery. “Even though we are saved we all have issues. We cannot have victory over our issues until
we have power over them,” said Minister Holt.
During the counseling sessions, he was able to be
transparent with his wife about the molestation.
He was able to deal with his issues – and from
that experience, Samson’s Dilemma was born.
Samson’s Dilemma is a First Baptist Church of
Glenarden ministry which seeks to help men free
themselves from all forms of sexual sin. Minister
Holt looked at the Book of Judges and Samson’s
struggle with sin. “He was a strong man, but sex
was his weakness.” After studying Samson, he
concluded that Samson could not overcome his
lust for women because he had no accountability.
Samson’s Dilemma has ministered to at
least 200 men. Forty men currently meet every
Wednesday. Forged into every man that comes to
the ministry is James 5:16, “Confess your trespasses to one another, and pray for one another,
that you may be healed. The effective, fervent
prayer of a righteous man avails much.”
The mission of Samson’s Dilemma is to defuse
the stronghold of the enemy. “We want to create
an atmosphere where men can be transparent, not
feel belittled and will experience freedom from
their addictions. We want them to connect to the
ministry without shame.” 

Zereta Young
Outreach Is in Her Heart and Soul!

I
f you’ve been to First Baptist Church of Glenarden, you’ve heard Pastor John K. Jenkins Sr.
speak about the importance of outreach – local,
national and international. For Zereta Young, reaching
out to others is in her heart and soul. She is a member
of First Baptist and has participated in outreach activities for 17 years – with a combined total of 21 domestic and foreign missions trips.
Young is a native of West Virginia, who moved to
the District of Columbia when she was 16 years old.
She was raised in a Methodist church and eventually
joined a Baptist church in the District of Columbia.
She heard about First Baptist and decided to visit
one Sunday in 1994. When she arrived, she noticed
that it was a huge church and very different from
her upbringing. The choir started singing, “Shabach!
Hallelujah! Shabach! Praise the Lord!” Pastor Jenkins
preached a biblical and powerful sermon to the congregation. During the altar call, Young found herself
walking down the aisle to become a member of First
Baptist – on her first visit.
The first ministry Young joined was the Willing
Workers Ministry, where she worked and served both
inside and outside the church. She presently serves
at First Baptist as the assistant director for Domestic
Missions, in the Global Missions Ministry.
Young is a hearer and doer of God’s Word. She
blesses people around the corner and across the globe,
spreading the gospel of Jesus Christ and His gift of
salvation. Young says, “If it were
up to me, everyone would go on
a missions trip. I initially thought
I went to change the world, but
each trip has changed me. You are
never too old to follow the heart of God. I will continue to work and serve Him until I can’t. If we allow
Him, He will give us the opportunity to expand His
Kingdom at any age, any stage or any season in our
lives.”
A retired Internal Revenue Service worker, Young is
known as “Ms. Z” in the church and “Momma Z” on
the missions field. “First Baptist is a large church, but
[it] is one of the most loving churches I’ve ever been
associated with,” said Young.
Young is also a mother and a grandmother. Her
daughter, Terri, is a member of First Baptist. She also
has a son, Jeffrey Sr. and a grandson, Jeffrey Jr., who
is a recent graduate of Temple University and now an
employee at the Pentagon.
Young’s favorite Scriptures are Isaiah 40:31, “But
those who wait on the LORD Shall renew their
strength; They shall mount up with wings like eagles,
They shall run and not be weary, They shall walk and
not faint”; and Philippians 4:13, “I can do all things
through Christ who strengthens me.”
Under the leadership of Pastor Jenkins, Young has
become more confident and assertive. She says, “I do
what God would have me to do.” 

The 2011 United Sisters for Your Journey Women’s Retreat

he third annual “United
Sisters for Your Journey” women’s retreat
was held March 16-18,
2011, at the beautiful
Hyatt Regency Chesapeake Bay Resort located
in Cambridge, Md.
Approximately 500 women attended the retreat, including those from First Baptist Church
of Glenarden and other host churches from across
the United States.
The gathering included dynamic speakers RevFirst Lady

Sheppard and Deborah Smith Pegues.
Reverend Thompson shared with the women
that “when I looked at the program and saw that it
read ‘when women worship’ I got excited, because powerful things happen when we get together and worship.” She
also shared that women are wonderful by themselves, but
are better when united. She referenced an example being
the biblical story of Ruth and Naomi – how they were connected and united in their journey.
The retreat attendees also heard from First Lady Meredith Sheppard; an anointed speaker, author and wife of
Pastor Paul Sheppard. She spoke of unity between women
and gave uplifting remarks in relation to sisters being connected to God and one another – to strengthen and keep the
enemy away.

Gospel recording artist Beverly Crawford was the
guest psalmist and concert host for the event. She
ministered to the women through praise and worship
songs during the Thursday evening concert.
Women representing the host churches and other
special guests facilitated the interactive Sisterhood
Empowerment Sessions. Topics included: Breaking
Strongholds; Living an Abundant Life After Childhood Trauma; No Longer Blue – Breakthrough to a
New You; Financial Boot Camp; D.E.S.P.E.R.A.T.E.
Housewives - For Married Women Only; Intimacy
With God; Living Holy in a Healthy Body; The Art

of Forgiveness; Seasons of Singleness; and The Real
World: Unplugged.
The retreat also included “Sister Girl Chats,” which
provided an opportunity for women to ask questions
and receive biblical advice for problems and dilemmas in their lives.
Angela Hudgins, a member of FBCG and a first
time retreat attendee found the experience uplifting.
Hudgins said, “I was very moved and I feel full of
the Spirit after the retreat. I didn’t quite know what to
expect before I got there, but it was an enjoyable time
being able to connect with other sisters in Christ and I
will definitely return again next year.” 

Facing the
Giants
By Pyper R. Harvey
“Facing the Giants” couples both faith and football
in an inspiring way. It is a story of sorrow, strength
and determination. It warms the heart of man and
shows how faith and purpose – even behind the
scenes – can have an impact on the masses.
The movie begins by showing how
the main character, Coach Grant Taylor, has been hit with more than his
share of misfortune. His star athlete
is leaving the team to join its rival.
He also has to cope with a broken
vehicle, a leaky house and infertility
problems between him and his wife.
After learning that she may never be
able to bear a child, his wife, who
was also his biggest supporter, loses
hope.
As head of the house, everything
was on Grant’s shoulders. He felt
powerless and defeated because he
was unsuccessful on his job, unable to provide for
his household and could do nothing to fulfill his
wife’s desire to bear a child. When Grant thought
it couldn’t get any worse, he learned that he would
soon be replaced as coach because of his unsuccessful track record.
Grant cried out to God through Scripture and

prayer, and the Lord sent him a sign. In the midst of
His trials and tribulations, God showed Himself in a
mighty way. Grant found his sense of purpose in life
and for the team. He vowed to operate in excellence
and glorify God in all things. Through every defeat,
he encouraged the team, and he too,
became encouraged.
When the team began to operate on
purpose – taking themselves out of
the equation and depending on God,
both professional and personal victories began to take place.
Beautifully written, “Facing the
Giants” has different subplots and
symbolism depicted throughout. In an
inspiring scene, a football player carries another player on his back. One
could liken this to how God often
carries our burdens and heavy loads
in life.
If you love football, drama and stories of victory
and triumph, then this is a must-see movie. “Facing
the Giants” reminds us to glorify God in all things
and to keep going, even when life hurts.
“Facing the Giants” is a moving and inspirational
story of courage – one that you will remember long
after the movie ends. 
Marriage
from A toZ
book Review

“Marriage from A to Z” is written by Carolyn
Tatem. She is a member of First Baptist Church
of Glenarden. She and her husband William
have been actively involved in First Baptist’s
Couples Ministry for over 10 years. Through her
experiences as a wife and working with couples,
this book was birthed.
“Marriage from A to Z”
provides practical principles
that will help married couples
to obtain and maintain a
strong marriage, friendship
and relationship. Each
principle is shared with
examples from the Tatem’s
marriage, real life examples
and the Word of God.
There are practical
principles for each letter of
the alphabet. Tatem said that
one of her favorite principles
is the “Z” principle. The
“Z” stands for Zebra. This
principle states that marriages
and zebras have a few things in common. Zebras
are known as African equids, they have distinctive
black and white stripes. Every marriage has its
own black and white stripes. The black stripes
represent its dark days. The dark days are the days
when you may not get along, communication
could be off, someone may have lost a job or a
family member may be going
through a trial. The white
stripes represent the bright
days. The bright days are when
everything is going great, you are treating each
other wonderfully, the intimacy level is high and
you have had a wonderful date or
vacation together. Anyone who
has been married for any length
of time knows that there will
be some black stripes and some
white stripes. Each marriage has
its own unique pattern, and no
marriage is exactly the same.

Lezlyn Parker, “Carolyn
has done a brilliant job with
‘Marriage from A to Z.’ We find
most people are not interested
in simply hearing statistics
about marriage; they want

vulnerability about the challenges in her own
marriage blended with biblical truth is authentic
and engaging.”
I agree that it is a great book – one that I highly
recommend to married couples! 

Worthy” reminds us why we
worship the Lord, because
He is worthy and deserves
the glory and praise. The
next song “The Battle
Belongs to God” is a fast
paced, energetic declaration
to not be afraid or dismayed.
You’re reminded that the
battle belongs to God, and
the victory belongs to you.
When we put our trust completely in God we cannot
lose. Then we can dance and shout, for the victory
is won on “War Cry,” which I assure you will chase
away any remaining fear or dismay.
After declaring victory in Christ, we are encouraged to worship Him through two beautiful songs,
“We Worship Your Name” and “Daily I Shall Worship
Thee.” Worship must be a lifestyle for the born again
believer. Worship ushers in the presence of God.
In “Christ Did It All” we are reminded that we
have life more abundantly through Jesus Christ and

the shedding of His blood on Calvary. The song “He
Could Have Let Me Drown” is a sweet account of
Jesus saving us from a sinking sea of sin and shame.
This song strikes a chord to the
realities of life without Jesus
Christ as our Lord and Savior.
Therefore, we must pray as
David prayed in Psalm 51:10,
“Create in me a clean heart, O
God, and renew a steadfast spirit
within me,” which is also melodically sung on this CD.
“Nobody Like Jesus” is a
lively praise, “You can search the
whole world over and you won’t
find nobody like Him” because
only “Jesus Christ is the same
yesterday, today and forever”
(Hebrews 13:8). On “Morning Praise” and “Jesus is
Worthy” the Greater Mt. Calvary choir leads us to a
place of thanksgiving and praise for the goodness and
faithfulness of God, even when we don’t deserve it.
Do you need strength in your struggle, encouragement or power in your praise? Just put your trust in
God, “For your heavenly Father knows that you need
all these things. But seek first the kingdom of God and
His righteousness, and all these things shall be added
to you” (Matthew 6:32-33). 

What Is
Lactose Intolerance?

H
Have you ever eaten ice cream, cereal with
milk or macaroni and cheese. Did you later
experience what seemed like a volcano
erupting in your stomach? If so, you may have
lactose intolerance.
Lactose intolerance is the inability of the body to
digest certain types of lactose (unabsorbed sugar),
which is found in many foods and dairy products.
Seventy-five percent of the worldwide population
and 25 percent of American adults are considered
to be lactose intolerant. In addition to African
Americans, other commonly affected groups are
Indians and Asians. Children may also be lactose
intolerant.
Lactose intolerance is caused by a lack of a
specific enzyme (lactase) in the body’s intestines.
Lactase is responsible for breaking down
unabsorbed sugar (lactose) into two other sugars
(glucose and galactose) that can be absorbed by
the body. When there is a deficiency in the enzyme
lactase, the unabsorbed sugar causes excess fluid in
the intestines.

The symptoms of lactose intolerance can be very
uncomfortable and even embarrassing. They include
watery diarrhea, abdominal bloating, abdominal
cramps and passing excessive gas. People with
lactose intolerance may feel and hear their stomachs
gurgling as soon as 30 minutes after eating dairy
products. Sometimes, it can take up to 12 hours
before problems begin.
Diagnosis of lactose intolerance can be as simple
as making the connection between dairy products
and the symptoms described above. However,
there are tests available for identifying lactose
intolerance. A milk tolerance test requires the patient
to drink milk and have a blood sample drawn. A
biopsy of the small bowel is considered the gold
standard for diagnosis of lactose maldigestion, but it
is an invasive and cumbersome test.
Lactose intolerance can be treated by adjusting
your diet. Most people can tolerate up to 1 cup
or 8 ounces of milk per day. Certain people have
improved their lactose intolerance with continued
exposure to dairy products over time. However,
people that continue to experience problems have
to avoid foods, drinks and medicines that contain
lactose.
The good news is that there are many lactose-free
products, such as Lactaid milk, that are now widely
available. The bad news is that lactose is not only
limited to dairy products such as cheese and milk,
but is also hidden in breads, baked goods, processed
breakfast cereals, instant potatoes/soups/drinks,
margarine, non-kosher lunch meat, salad dressings,
candies/processed snacks and pancake/biscuit/
cookie mixes. Because of these hidden sources of
lactose, it is very important to read food labels.
Tablets and capsules containing a lactose-digesting
enzyme can also be taken 30 minutes prior to eating
lactose containing products. But keep in mind, the
tablets or capsules may not provide enough enzymes
to digest all of the lactose containing food, and
therefore symptoms may occur. Most people over
time can determine how many tablets/capsules are
necessary to allow them to enjoy certain foods.
Finally, and most importantly, lactose intolerant
people must receive calcium supplements to ensure
they get enough of this important nutrient. As
always, please discuss this and all health-related
matters with your doctor.

A Solitary Place

D
aily, we must dedicate a solitary, uninterrupted place to seek the voice of God.
Very early in the morning, Jesus went to a solitary place to pray; “Now in the
morning, having risen a long while before daylight, He went out and departed to a
solitary place; and there He prayed” (Mark 1:35).
Jesus also went to Gethsemane and told His disciples to, “Sit here while I go and pray over there”
(Matthew 26:36).
God wants to spend time with us. We should have a burning desire to put the world aside and spend
time in a solitary, uninterrupted place with Him who makes living possible.
“My soul, wait silently for God alone, For my expectation is from Him” (Psalm 62:5).
