Conor McCadden Inspired Many
from Eli Manning to Coach K;
Conor's Father Speaks
In the world of athletics, words such as fierce, bravery,
inspiration, battling are used on a daily basis.
Those same words are also metaphors used for the game of life.
Conor McCadden used them for both.
On the basketball court, as a 5-6 freshman on the Metuchen
basketball team, McCadden fought and battled and was fearless
enough to think he was just as good or better as the bigger,
older player he was guarding or guarding him.
McCadden fought a courageous battle against bone cancer for
over a year before it got the best of him on Sunday night.
Conor was a 16-year-old junior at MHS.
METUCHEN REMEMBERS CONOR MCCADDEN
METUCHEN FALLS TO BISHOP AHR, BUT BATTLES FOR CONOR
“Even on the day he passed, he said ‘We got this. We’re gonna
beat this,’ ‘’ said Conor’s father Andy McCadden. “That’s the
kind of kid he was.’’
McCadden’s brave fight against cancer inspired many locally
and nationally — from Eli Manning to Mike Krzyzewski.
Conor McCadden (left)
with good friend and
former teammate Brian
Eustace
Anonymous calls were made to the New York Giants and Duke
basketball, two of Conor’s passions.
When a phone message was left with the Giants’ front office
last week, a phone call came back on Monday to the anonymous
caller from Metuchen. It was Eli Manning on the other end.
Manning was ‘’hurt’’ by the news of Conor’s passing.
Tonight (Sunday), when the McCadden’s were decorating their
Christmas tree, they noticed a wrapped box under the tree.
Once thought to be a present brought from Conor’s grandparents
from Texas, the box was opened. It was an Eli Manning jersey
signed by one Eli Manning.
“That was quite a surprise,’’ said Andy McCadden. “Conor would
have loved that.’’
For the past 15 months of his life, McCadden battled cancer.
He went through multiple treatments of chemotherapy, he had a
knee completely replaced, he had two leg surgeries … he lived
a life of agony.
Through it all, however, the kid remained positive. His main
goal in life was to return to the gym to play the game he
loved so much, basketball.
Little did he know he was serving as an inspiration to others.
“Conor made it so much easier for everyone around him,’’ said
Andy McCadden. “He never once complained or said ‘why me.’ He
just made it so easy for everyone and he touched so many lives
because of his attitude, his spirit.
“And because of it, the support our family has received from
everyone has made this so much more comforting. It’s
unfortunate what happened , but the support has just been
overwhelming from the school, the church, all the people at
Robert Wood Johnson Hospital, neighbors … the list goes on and
on.’’
Serving as a counselor at the basketball camp held by then
Metuchen head coach Jon Korellis in the summer prior to his
sophomore year, Conor complained of a sore knee.
Thinking it was just a stress fracture, McCadden continued to
play sports. But as the knee worsened, he went to see a
doctor.
Conor McCadden
After seeing different specialists, a tumor was discovered on
the back of his knee. The tumor was shrunk then removed, his
knee was totally replaced. The cancer was in remission.
On Conor’s twitter page, he wrote: “Today officially starts
the day getting back to playing basketball. The ultimate goal
must be complete.’’
Shooting around in the gym prior to his sophomore year, Conor
knew he would not be strong enough to return to the court, but
junior year was the year the sharpshooter would be ready to
pick up where he left off as a freshman when he scored 123
points and played in every game on the varsity.
But the cancer returned last summer. He missed the start of
school, then the cancer began to spread at a rapid rate. The
doctors gave him a month to live.
While his teammates and people associated with the school
simply thought McCadden was fine and would be returning to the
court one day, he came to school just last Thursday to tell
everyone the news.
That day, he sat down with fellow captain/best friend Thomas
Chalker, head coach Guy Jensen, Athletic Director John
Cathcart and Principal Bruce Peragallo to deliver the news.
On Saturday, he attended Metuchen’s scrimmage with Perth
Amboy, delivered a few words of encouragement. On Sunday, he
passed away at home.
“We were driving home on Thursday and he insisted on going to
the school to tell them,’’ said Andy. “I was saying he didn’t
have to, but this was something he wanted to do all on his
own. That’s the kind of person he was.’’
Conor’s story was so inspiring, it drew the attention of not
only Eli Manning, but legendary Duke basketball coach Mike
Krzyzewski as well .
“Conor was a huge Duke fan,’’ said Andy McCadden. “I still
don’t know who made the connection, but one day we came home
and coach K left a voice message, which we saved. He ended up
calling again and we all had a great conversation with him. My
son Ryan is a senior at West Point, so they talked and had a
great conversation since they have the West Point connection
(that’s where Krzyzewski attended). He is a very nice man and
that was so nice of him to do that.’’
While Conor was alive, he received a care package from Duke,
which included a jersey, a hat and a book written by Jay
Bilas, among other items.
“He impacted a lot of people because of the person he was,’’
said Andy, whose second son Sean plays on the Metuchen
freshman team. “We were fortunate to have a son like him.’’
On the day he passed, Conor still had hope.
“We were all watching the Army-Navy game, he was still talking
about beating his cancer,’’ said Andy. “Then he went upstairs,
he got real weak and he passed on.
“But he battled until the end.’’

Falls
Short
To
Bishop Ahr, But Battles For
Conor
METUCHEN — Bishop Ahr beat Metuchen 53-40 to open the 2014-15
season on Friday night in Metuchen before an overflow crowd,
but the game really had nothing to with basketball.
It was about life and how precious it is, it was about
inspiration, it was about love, it was about never quitting …
it was about a lot of things, but winning, losing and
statistics were not among them.
The Bulldogs were playing this game in honor of junior Conor
McCadden, who succumbed to a battle with bone cancer on
Sunday. On Thursday, McCadden arrived at school to tell his
best friend and team captain Tom Chalker as well as head coach
Guy Jensen and school administrators that he had a very short
time to live.
He arrived in the second half for the Bulldogs’ scrimmage on
Saturday and passed away one day later.
“An incredibly courageous young man,” said Piscataway coach
Guy Jensen. “He feared nothing and nobody, not even death. To
do what he did and to live the life he did was a true
inspiration to all of us. To know this young man has made me a
better coach, a better father, a better man.”
The Bulldogs, wearing ‘Warrior Dawg’ T-shirts to symbolize the
life of Conor McCadden, repeatedly tapped McCadden’s No. 2
jersey during warmups, which was draped on the padding behind
the basket.

McCadden by wearing T-shirts with his name on the back
When Chalker was announced, he ran up into the stands to hug
the family of McCadden, who were in attendance, including his
parents Andy and Laura, brothers Ryan and Sean and one set of
grandparents from Texas. Ryan is a senior at West Point, Sean
is a freshman at Metuchen.
The Bulldogs, as one would expect, came out with extreme
adrenaline and let it get of them as Bishop Ahr rolled out to
a 21-point lead.
But, in honor of
not going into
Bulldogs fought
trimmed the lead
McCadden, Metuchen did not quit. The ball was
the hoop as much as they wanted, but the
hard, dove on the floor for loose balls and
to 10 at point in the fourth quarter.
Like Conor, they battled until the end.
“I went out a little hectic, a lot was on my mind,” said
Chalker. “I feel he would be proud of me either way for
playing hard, but I feel I let him down a little bit.
“But we battled in the second half after being down 20 and
that was because of Conor. He always battled and never quit
and neither did we.”
“There were a lot of emotions flying,” said Evan Collier,
another close teammate. “We always talk about he would tell us
not to quit and he never quit himself. That’s what drove us in
the fourth quarter to keep fight. That was because of Conor.
Because of his inspiration, this team will never give up.
We’ll fight until the end.”

at Piscataway Tech,
LAST YEAR’S RECORD: “16-10. However, we made a great run at
the end of the year. As the 12th seed we knocked off the 5th, 4th
and 1
st
seed to reach the GMC finals. There we lost to
Piscataway by 5 points after leading the 1
st
3 quarters.
“Graduated Bri Foster, who led the team in rebounding and
toughness. It will be hard to replace that attitude. Returning
10 players and 4 starters. (*denotes starter on roster). We
have high goals for the season. Should compete for the White
Division again. We will see what is working at our scrimmages
against tough competition from Union county.”

COACH’S COMMENTS:
TEAM STRENGTHS: Experience/Speed.
TEAM WEAKNESSES: Size.
So
OUTLOOK: The top teams in the GMC Gold Division are stronger
than they have been in past seasons. South Amboy made it to
the county quarter finals last year. South River lost in the
Central Jersey Group 1 finals to Metuchen in overtime. Also,
three teams tied for the division title. (Dunellen, Timothy
Christian and South River.) The division has a number of
players that could be impact players in the other divisions as
well. It is going to be very difficult to match the success
the team had last season.
GOALS: Capture sole possession of Gold Division. (Last season
shared first place with Timothy Christian and South River.)
Win more games in the county and state tournaments.

Remembers
Conor
McCadden As An Inspiration
Last Thursday, Conor McCadden came to Metuchen High School to
tell best friend Tommy Chalker, school administrators and his
head coach that he had a very short time to live.
On Saturday, the junior was at the school rooting on the
Metuchen Bulldogs from the stands during a boys basketball
scrimmage against Perth Amboy, serving his role as captain.
Sunday night, he was gone.
That alone should tell you about the courage of one Conor
McCadden, who succumbed to osteosarcoma bone cancer after
battling for more than a year.
He was 16 years old. Surviving are his parents Laura and
Andrew and brothers Sean and Ryan.
Metuchen will honor McCadden on Friday in the season opener at
Metuchen against Bishop Ahr. The girls will play at 5:30, the
boys at 7. Chalker, a fellow captain, will honor McCadden this
season by wearing his jersey number 2.
“I was at his house with him on Saturday with former player
Brian Eustace, Thomas Chalker and his family watching the
Army-Navy game,” said former Metuchen coach Jon Korellis, who
coached McCadden as a freshman. “He went upstairs to get some
oxygen and he texted me later to come up.
“We were talking about being strong and never giving up and I
was still trying to be the voice of hope. I held his head in
the bed and he told me a story. Even though I encouraged him
to come to Metuchen, he was going to St. Joe’s and his mother,
who I work with, said all her kids would be going to St.
Joe’s. But he would come to our camps and our summer games, I
would tell him I had big plans for him and we developed a
strong bond.
“So he told me that he said to his parents ‘When coach
Korellis turns around the basketball program at Metuchen, I
want to be a part of it and he came to Metuchen. Here is a kid
who is about to die and he’s talking about how much basketball
meant to him. Conor was a small kid with a huge heart.
“The players and families from my AAU team from a town away
are all devastated, the people at Metuchen, he just impacted
so many people because of the type of person he was.”
“This is why I got back into coaching and I believe this is
the reason God sent me to Metuchen,” said current head coach
Guy Jensen, the former coach at Piscataway who came to
Metuchen after two years of not being a head coach. “To know
this kid has already made me a better father, a better coach,
a better man.
CONOR MCCADDEN’S OBITUARY
Conor McCadden
“He called me on Wednesday and asked me if it was okay to miss
practice because his favorite nurse had purchased Rangers
tickets for him and he wanted to go.
“He would call me to tell me he wasn’t going to be able to
attend practice because he had chemotherapy and wasn’t feeling
up to it. This is a kid who never even played for me and he’s
texting me to tell me he can’t make practice because he’s
going to chem0. He is a genuine inspiration. This is a very
humbling experience as an adult. It really puts things in
perspective.’’
On Thursday, McCadden came to school. He first talked to
Chalker, then to Athletic Director John Cathcart and Jensen in
a sit-down discussion along with his father.
“He texted me to ask if we could meet because he wanted to
talk to me and John,’’ added Jensen. “After he talked to Tommy
Chalker, we sat down in John’s office and he told us the
cancer was spreading and the doctors only gave him four weeks
to live.
“As he walked through the door, you could hear him breathing,
you could hear the rattling in his lungs. He would say a few
words at a clip, then he would take deep breaths. It was
heartbreaking and inspirational at the same time.’’
“Amazing, inspirational,’’ said a teary-eyed Cathcart. “The
courage it took to come to school to tell people he was going
to die. He said he wanted to be the one to tell people.
“We’re sitting here and he tell us he has a month to live. You
want to just start crying right there but you don’t want him
to see. To me, that’s how I will remember him, a very
courageous young man.’’
Chalker, a senior point guard, was a sophomore when this hotspot freshman, who had played at St. Francis growing up, came
to Metuchen instead of St. Joseph where everyone thought he
would be.
Conor McCadden
“I hated him at first,’’ said Chalker, also tearing up. “This
kid had the best jump shot I have ever seen and he was good. I
was nervous because I thought he was going to take my spot.
“But he grew on me as a person to the point we became best
friends and I just wish I had more time to play with him.
“After he told me the news, I asked him if I could wear his
jersey #2. He told me he thought it was a great idea, so I’m
very excited. I’m just not sure I could ever live up to what
he was, but I can just hope he’s watching over me every-time I
put it on.’’
As a freshman, McCadden made the varsity team. He came off the
bench in every game and scored 126 points on the season with
22 3-pointers. He scored a career high 15 against Kennedy.
“I gave him his first start late in the season against South
Amboy,” said Korellis. “He was horrible, so bad I sat him. How
did he respond? He hits four three’s in the second half and we
won by 20. He had more guts than a lot of seniors I coached.”
During the summer before his sophomore year, a tumor was found
behind his knee. The tumor was removed, he had his knee
replaced and McCadden was preparing to return to the court,
but the cancer returned about a year later, just this past
summer.
“He was at my camp one day in the summer and was complaining
about his knee,” said Korellis. “He goes to see a doctor, then
another doctor, then he calls me and tells me he’s going to
see a bone doctor in Long Island because they found a tumor.
That was a tough phone call.
“When the tumor was removed, the plan was to get back on the
court for his senior year. When he was a sophomore, we made
him an assistant coach. And we took it serious, we would ask
for his input and what he saw. He was a student of the game
and he took his role seriously.”
“After the tumor was found, he was fighting back, his hair
grew back and I remember him shooting around in the gym. I
knew he was too weak to play this year, but I thought he would
come back for his senior year and it would be a great comeback
story. Unfortunately it didn’t happen. We are all just
distraught over this.’’
According to Cathcart, McCadden played a little baseball and
some soccer, but he gave it all up for the game he loved.
“He just loved basketball,’’ said Cathcart. “He was a great
ball-handler and shooter. Basketball was his passion.’’
Metuchen principal Bruce Peragallo said: “The last time I saw
Conor, he was in a gym with his teammates watching the game of
basketball, the game he loved. That’s how I will always
remember him.’’
Jensen had yellow bracelets made up which says: “Warrior Dawg.
Our Musafa Conor McCadden.”
Jensen took the words from this message: “He’s our Musafa.
When a warrior goes down, you pick up his shield and go play
in honor of him.”
Said Jensen, “These are words we live by today, tomorrow and
always: ‘Play in honor of him.’ ”

Highland Park, 41-0
HIGHLAND PARK – Junior wide receiver Evan Collier scored on a
77-yard run to put Metuchen on the board in the first quarter,
then added a 28-yard touchdown pass when the Bulldogs put
things away in the third quarter to lead Metuchen to a 41-0
victory over Highland Park on Wednesday night in Highland

Metuchen, which has never won three games in a row in the

Metuchen, which has shut out Highland Park two years in a row,
led just 14-0 at halftime after Collier’s 77-yard and Joe
Cammarano’s three-yard plunge.

things away with four different players scoring – Danny Briggs
on a 53-yard run, Josh Hall on a 14-yard run, a 28-yard pass

TUESDAY
ST. JOSEPH (3-6) AT BISHOP AHR (4-5), 7 P.M.
SERIES HISTORY: St. Joseph leads 2-0.
Years from now, this is going to be one of the best rivalry
games in the GMC and beyond.
This is not the year. This has been a totally lost season for
St. Joseph, which has endured personnel problems on a weekly
basis. For Bishop Ahr, this was a once-promising season as it
was competing and even beating playoff teams before a lateseason swoon took over.
Taking a win into the off-season is probably more important in
this game than any other in the GMC.
THE PICK: Bishop Ahr, 27-21
WEDNESDAY
METUCHEN (5-4) AT HIGHLAND PARK (1-8), 6 P.M.
SERIES HISTORY/STREAKS: Dating back to 1937, Highland Park
leads 60-18-1. Metuchen has won one in a row, but Highland
Park won the previous seven games.
Seniors on the Metuchen defense from left: Joe Cammarano,
Danny Briggs, Tommy Gorman, Josh Hall, Tyler Valovcin,
Robby Gilman and head coach Bob Ulmer
They say you can throw the record books out the window when
two long-time, heated rivals meet.
Not so much in this one as the Owls have dominated. How
dominant have the Owls been? In a series dating back to 1937,
Metuchen has never won three games in a row.
The Bulldogs will go for two in a row on Wednesday.
JO JO: Highland Park has been playing football for 78 years.
Joe Policastro has been associated with the program for close
to 50 of those years.
Joe was

standout career at Holy Cross, he came back to HP and
assistant coach under legendary Jay Dakelman for
years.
Policastro took over as the head man in 1978 and collected a
won-loss mark of 177-103-5 in 29 years before resigning in
2006. He has been an assistant coach for the Owls since then.
NOTES: My Uncle Ken Haley and Thomas DeNapoli, the father of
Dunellen head coach Dave DeNapoli, were on the 1937 Metuchen
team. DeNapoli was a captain … My uncle, Vinny Behan, was one
of the captains of the 1944 club, which beat HP, 38-6.
THE PICK: Metuchen 29, Highland Park 15
THANKSGIVING
EAST BRUNSWICK (4-5) AT OLD BRIDGE (5-4), 10 A.M.
SERIES HISTORY/STREAK: Dating back to 1994, Old Bridge leads
17-3. Old Bridge has won three in a row.
Big one for EB.
Mike Gargano,
Old Bridge
Kevin
Hemmings, East
Brunswick
Combining for a record of 3-16 the previous two seasons
heading into 2014, the Bears are beginning to turn the
corner with a 4-5 record to prove it.
There really hasn’t been a signature win, however, so a win
here would validate 2014.
This is also a big one for Old Bridge. After a rare rebuilding
situation in the late 2000’s, the Knights have it going again.
A victory would mean a winning record for the third straight
season. That hasn’t happened since 2003, ’04 and ’05, which
was actually the end of a five-year streak of winning.
THE PICK: Old Bridge 20-18.
NORTH PLAINFIELD (2-7) AT SOUTH PLAINFIELD (3-6), 10 A.M.
SERIES HISTORY/STREAK: Dating back to 1956, North Plainfield
leads 25-14-1. North Plainfield has won 11 in a row.
A once-promising season turned into an inconsistent season,
but a win could end things with their first two-game winning
streak for the Tigers.
THE PICK: South Plainfield 25-21.
SOUTH BRUNSWICK (10-0) AT NORTH BRUNSWICK (2-7), 10 A.M.
SERIES HISTORY/STREAK: Dating back to 1975, North Brunswick
leads 23-15-1. South Brunswick has won four straight.
South Brunswick is playing for a state title on Dec. 6 when it
takes on Manalapan in the Central Jersey, Group 5 final.
Does that mean the Vikings will take this game lightly and
perhaps rest some players for the game big game?
Don’t think so. Why? Because a victory would give South
Brunswick 11 wins a season for the first time in its 54-year
history. Plus, a perfect season is on the line as well.
THE PICK: South Brunswick 21-0
MIDDLESEX (7-3) AT DUNELLEN (9-1), 10:30 A.M.
SERIES HISTORY/STREAK: Dating back to 1959, Dunellen leads
15-14. Dunellen has won five in a row.
Dunellen running backs, from left, Rob Young, David
Johnson, Paul Appleton, Nassan Anderson
Dunellen is playing for its first state title since 1993 when
it takes on Shabazz in the North 2, Group 1 final on Saturday,
Dec. 6 at Kean University.
But any rivalry game is big for the schools, the communities
and the alumni no matter what the records are.
Plus, two more victories would give Dunellen 11 wins a season.
Head coach Dave DeNapoli is trying to find out if that ever
happened before.
THE PAT APELLO BOWL: Who is Pat Apello going to root for? Pat
is the announcer for Dunellen home games on Friday’s and for
Middlesex home games on Saturday’s. Pat is the Dunellen
softball coach and the Dunellen-Middlesex co-op wrestling team
… decisions, decisions.
Other
connections:
Dunellen’s
special
teams/receivers/defensive backs coach Howie Horowitz is a
former Middlesex great. He still lives in Middlesex … Dunellen
quarterback David Johnson’s girlfriend is a Middlesex
cheerleader. Talk about a conflict … for her.
THE PICK: Dunellen 32-21.
J.P. STEVENS (2-7) AT EDISON (3-6), 10:30 A.M.
SERIES HISTORY: Dating back to 1966, J.P. Stevens leads
25-18-4. Edison is 3-2 over the last five years.
The Hawks were competitive in five of their seven losses
before winning its last games. In those two victories,
sophomore RB Chris Chukwuneke has a combined 496 yards on 34
carries and seven touchdowns and has over 1,000 yards on the
season.
Edison frosh QB Haazig Daniels leads Edison. Two years from
now when Daniels and Chukwuneke meet, the respective school
records may be re-written.
THE PICK: Stevens 28-22.
PISCATAWAY (8-2) AT FRANKLIN (2-7), 10:30 A.M.
SERIES HISTORY/STREAK: Dating back to 1962, Piscataway leads
25-21-3. Piscataway has won seven in a row.
It wasn’t took long ago Franklin led in a series featuring two
state powers, but Chiefs have remained there, while the
Warriors fell on recent hard times.
Simply put, Piscataway will be taking out its frustrations
after losing to Elizabeth in the North 2, Group 5 semifinals
last week.
THE PICK: Piscataway 32-7.
CARTERET (7-3) AT PERTH AMBOY (3-6), 11 A.M.
SERIES HISTORY/STREAK: Dating back to 1927, Perth Amboy leads
45-40-2. Carteret has won two in a row.
Will Carteret take it easy, maybe even rest some starters who
are all banged up in some way shape or form at this points in
the season?
Carteret staff, Back row (from left) Mike Kushner, John
Dolan, Nick Hrycuna, Jerry Derillo. Front row Keith
Kapinos, head coach Matt Yascko, Dan Morvay, Justin
Munoz.
After all, the Ramblers will be taking on Matawan in the
Central Jersey, Group 3 championship on Friday, Dec. 5.
Tough to say.
A month ago, this game had 30-0 written all over it, but the
Panthers kept improving each week, even in defeat, then ran
off three straight victories and will come into the tilt with
a full head of steam.
A loss to Perth Amboy doesn’t mean anything to Carteret, but
it will to the fans and all alumni going back to whomever is
still alive.
THE PICK: Carteret 22-13.
