Finally, an ethereal and glorious atmosphere is created by Andrew Smith’s Missa in Solstitio, reciting texts from the mass in a beautiful musical setting. Virtuosic neighbors come together to perform on HPPC’s magnificent Casavant Frères pipe organ to kick off the 2013-2014 Highlander Concert Series Season. ALL SAINTS' Sunday, November 2, 2013, 7:00 p.m. The Chancel Choir and Orchestra Derek Chester The Highlander Concert Series observes All Saints’ Day with a performance of the monumental Hymnus Paradisi by Herbert Howells, a composition rooted in the emotions and faith of those who have lost loved ones. The glorious biblical Mary Mackenzie texts of Psalm 23 and Psalm 121, juxtaposed with poignant texts from the church’s liturgy, provide an overwhelming experience of beauty and transcendence coupled with the musical outpouring of the composer. This concert is the first in an annual series of All Saints' concerts and is presented in memory of former Chancel Choir member Sid Davis, who died in 2009. It will serve as a time of reflection and remembrance for all those who have lost loved ones. The necrology of all Highland Park Presbyterian Church members who have died during the year will be read aloud and prayers will be offered for all who grieve. This will be an exceptionally moving event for all. James Diaz REFORMATION & REMEMBRANCE Sunday, October 6, 2013, 7:00 p.m. Highland Park Chorale & Orchestra The extraordinary cantata Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott, of Johann Sebastian Bach has been loved for centuries as a magnificent testament to the Protestant Reformation, celebrating the great chorale immortalized by Martin Luther. The Highland Park Chorale also commemorates the 50th anniversary of the death of President Kennedy with a performance of Take Him, Earth, for Cherishing, composed in his memory by Herbert Howells. GOOD FRIDAY Friday, April 18, 2014, 12:00 noon The Chancel Choir and Orchestra The end of Jesus’ earthly life is commemorated in Alan Bullard’s new composition, Wondrous Cross. Music and poetry combine to offer a vivid realization of the darkest yet brightest day in history in this Good Friday performance.
