Presbyterian Press More News From the Pews November 2014 Mr. John Cross Mrs. Doris Hicks Born: February 23, 1924 Born: December 21, 1921 Born to the Church Triumphant: Born to the Church Triumphant: October 5, 2014 October 8, 2014 Please welcome new members Becky Conner and son Mack Conner. Becky works for Catoosa County Public Schools and Mack attends McCallie, where he plays football. Message from Perry Greetings Friends! It's the word we avoid if at all possible. It's the word that represents for many people their greatest unspoken fear. It's unlike other fears that usually don't even take place. This one eventually takes place for every human being who has ever walked the planet. About what am I speaking? You already guessed it. I am talking about the natural human tendency for us to fear death. It’s almost time to order your Christmas poinsettias! Be on the lookout for order forms in the bulletin and the office, or you may call the office to place your order. Is it possible for us to overcome our fear of death? What is the primary reason we fear death? We fear that which we do not understand. The key to overcoming our fear of death is to understand what exactly takes place for the Christian when death occurs. During the month of November, I will lead a sermon series titled, Overcoming Your Fear of Death. In order to gain insight into life after death, we will explore the Scriptures that address this topic. I encourage us all to study the Scripture listed prior to each Sunday's message. This process should help maximize our understanding of each Scripture passage. In turn, we will be equipped and inspired to apply the Scriptures to our daily lives. Featured books in November and December are selections from the library's collection of Christmas books, religious and secular. Books for children are being moved back into the library. Watch for them there. On the new additions shelf: In the Spirit, Perry Gleason L. Archer, Jr. Encyclopedia of Bible Difficulties. Beginning with Genesis and ending with Revelation, this book offers "informed answers to your most troublesome questions" based on "linguistic, cultural, numerical, and relational considerations." Several helpful indexes. Dr. Perry C. McCallen Linda Jo McKim. The Presbyterian Hymnal Companion. Want to know more about the words or music of your favorite hymn, or a new one? This companion to our pew hymnal can tell you. Glory to God: The Presbyterian Hymnal. The new (2013) hymnal of the PCUSA. Terence P. Fretheim. Our November series will follow the journey of Mary and Joseph to Bethlehem using a DVD study of Adam Hamilton’s best selling book The Journey: Walking the Road to Bethlehem. Each session will include a 10-12 minute video of the author retracing the path of the holy couple’s journey. In addition, we will focus on relevant passages from the Bible and include time for discussion. There will not be a Wonderful Wednesday program on November 26, the day before Thanksgiving. We will continue into December with special events planned on December 10 and December 18 (Thursday). December 10 is the annual dinner sponsored by the Margaret Winslett Circle and Christmas program featuring our children and youth; the 18th is our dinner with the men of St. Matthew’s Shelter. Youth : Take a second look ****************************************************** I hope each of you enjoyed our children’s participation with the adult choir. Thank you, Dr. Ford, for including us. They feel very grown up standing in the choir loft with the adults. As I have already mentioned, we are working on some beautiful music for Advent. We are also looking forward to the children and young people’s annual seasonal program on an upcoming Wonderful Wednesday night. Thanksgiving will soon arrive. It’s the season to remember the many blessings we have been given! Welcome Mack Conner! Mack officially joined the Second Pres family October 12! Mack is a sophomore at McCallie and a member of the football team. As you have probably already seen, the one room Sunday School is coming together nicely. Hopefully, the new shelves will be installed by the time you receive this newsletter. The CE committee is working on a more thorough policy concerning the care and education of our babies and toddlers. We want to impress and encourage our visitors who have children these ages to return. Please continue to pray for and encourage our children, young people, and their parents (and especially me).
