Introduction ofNew Foundation Members: Mr. Ray Acosta introduced and welcomed new
members Mr. Bill Parker and Mr. Mac Harden.
Compton Event Update: Ms. Anita Timmons provided an update on the Compton Event and
began by thanking Ms. Melinda Laager, Ms. Jeanne Manning, and Ms. Rebecca Lott for their
assistance. Ms. Timmons reported the following final financial information on the Compton
Event:
$57,115.00 gross
S22.893.51 expenses
$34,221.49 net
Discussion followed and a final motion was made to retain no more than $10,000.00 in
Unrestricted funds and to place $24,221.49 into the CGCC Endowment Fund.
Ms. Jeanne Manning provided information on the Afternoon Tea event, which assisted in
broadening the support of the Compton Event as a whole. The setting (Cloister's Solarium and
Spanish Lounge) was well-received by the participants. She summarized the Afternoon Tea as
follows:
Advantages
C
Disadvantages
15-20% added income
New level of complexity to mailing invitations
Broadens base of Lecture Series
Much effort used in comparison to money
Maintains general interest for Series
raised (may be off-set by limiting free tickets)
Beneficial when the Compton Event is a "sellout"; the Afternoon Tea can take the overflow
Could be possible to conduct it at another
time of year, as a stand-alone event

Ms. Rebecca Lott provided information on the negotiations that are under
way for the 2000
Compton Event and stated that Cokie Roberts, who would like to visit
the St. Simons area, is
willing to appear for $25,000.00, instead of her usual fee of $35,000.00
(Ms. Roberts would only
do one event for $25,000.00 would not do both the Afternoon Tea and
the Evening event).
Ms. Roberts is not, however, able to attend in February 2000; is only
available in April 2000. Ms.
Lott will provide additional information to the Foundation as it becom
es available.
Nominations for Next Year's Officers and New Board Members: The
following were
nominated and approved:
New members:
Cato Rogers

Officers:
Anita Timmons, Chair
David Smith, 1st Vice President
Lynn Gaskins, 2nd Vice President

Tom Saunders, Assistant Treasurer
Investment Report: Mr. Tom Saunders provided the following:
The CGCC Foundation Endowment Fund had a market value of $1,29
0,665.00 as of
February 28, 1999. The asset allocation currently stands at 14% cash,
48% fixed income, and
38% equities. The account had an excellent total return of 14.92% during
1998, with the equities
out-performing the S&P 500 by three percentage points.
The Camden Fund had a market value of $265,251.00 as of February
28, 1999. The asset
allocation remains at 75% fixed income and 25% equities. The threemonth return for the period
ending December 31, 1998, was 5.72%; the equity portion of the portfo
lio has been moved to an
S&P 500 Index Fund.
Annual Fund Report: Ms. Melinda Laager provided the following:
June 30, 1999, will end the fund drives for this fiscal year and there are
several
outstanding contributions that still need to be collected. She reiterated
the Compton Event
information and stated that a total of $89,775.42 in unrestricted funds
had been collected.
College Comments: Dr. Dorothy Lord reported the following:
1. A meeting has been scheduled at the Jekyll Island Ramada Inn (to be
hosted by Coastal
Georgia Community College) to bring together the area P-16 Councils
(Glynn, Mclntosh,
Camden, Wayne, Brantley, and Charlton) and area businesses to discus
s the Parental Involvement
Initiative and how to improve student achievement for education and
employment.
2. The Chamber of Commerce has a strong interest in developing a missio
n statement for
improving the quality of the area workforce and designated a committee to
work with the Glynn

County School Board; Dr. Lord was asked to be a member of the committee.
3. The University System of Georgia conversion from the quarter system to the semester
system impacted the number of courses students take system-wide. Although CGCC had an
increase in headcount (the actual number of students enrolled), the EFT (Equivalency of Full
Time) decreased. The 2001 budget will be affected by this year's declines and CGCC is
anticipating a significant budget reduction in 2001. In an attempt to meet the budget restrictions,
CGCC will reorganize areas and will not be filling some vacant positions. Pending BOR
approval, the following will be implemented:
a. The Division of Learning Support will be merged with the Division of General Studies
and the Division Chair for Learning Support will be replaced with a Department
Head (salary expenditure to be lessened),
b. The Division of Business and Industry will be reorganized and the Division Chair
position will be replaced with a Department Head position (salary expenditure to
be lessened),
c. To meet the enrollment crisis, a Task Force with the specific charge of finding new
students has been implemented. It is hoped that CGCC can increase the number of
students directly out of high school who are able to take 15 semester hours per
term (to assist in raising the declining EFT).
4. Information regarding the progress of the Camden Center project was provided. It is
expected that next year CGCC should receive $17.5 million from the Legislature for the
permanent facility.
Announcements and Closing Comments: A Donor Party will be held on May 11, 1999, at
Rainbow Island and all Foundation members were invited to attend.
There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned and lunch was served.

FOUNDATION MEETING MINUTES
DECEMBER 14,1998
Present: Ray Acosta, Elizabeth Aylward, Ralph Basham, Emily Davenport, Kenneth Farrell, Jack
Hartman, Joe Harvey, Jeanne Manning, Margie Mills, Charles Rinkevich, David Smith, Ben
Slade, Anita Timmons, Ray Wells, Dr. Dorothy L. Lord, Melinda Laager, Charlie Nutt, Tom
Saunders, Dr. Douglas Tuech, Dr. Mollie DeHart
The Coastal Georgia Community College Foundation met at 11:00 am in the Satilla
Room of the Coastal Georgia Community College Conference Center. Mr. Ray Acosta presided.
Ms. Jeanne Manning was welcomed as a new member; Mr. Mac Harden, affiliated with
Friendly Express stores, and Mr. Bill Parker, Sapelo Bank, were nominated and approved as new
Foundation members.
Anita Timmons asked Melinda Laager to provide information on the annual fund. Ms.
Laager reported that as of December 14,1998, the following had been collected:
$61,559.26 in unrestricted funds; $23,000.00 from "A Day" activities; $18,577.00 from
athletics; and $14,948.00 from the Campus campaign (total of approximately $118,000.00). She
expects an additional $17,000.00 to come in, bringing the total to approximately $135,000.00 to
date.
Ms. Laager provided details on the Compton Lecture, featuring David and Julie
Nixon Eisenhower, scheduled for February 23, 1999. Concerns regarding the reduction of tickets
available (from 450 in 1998 to 300 in 1999) were raised, information regarding ticket pricing was
provided (approximately same as last year = $50.00 General seating, $75.00 Preferred seating,
$500.00 for Bronze Circle), and discussion regarding the location ensued.
Tom Saunders provided a brief update on the finances of the Foundation. For the year
ending June 30, 1998, restricted funds increased from $397,241.00 to $748,940.00. A significant
portion of the increase was attributed to the $250,000 received from the Camden County
Sheriffs Office. Unrestricted cash donations for the year slightly exceeded $45,000.00 while
over $30,000:00 in interest and dividends were earned. Endowment funds have turned in an
excellent performance despite recent volatility in the equities market.
C
Dr. Lord provided an update and handouts, published by the University System of
Georgia, which were designed to raise awareness and profile the University System and included:
Fiscal Year 2000 Budget Request-Capital Projects List--this article lists Coastal Georgia
Community College's Camden Center facility ($17,510,000.00) as number 10 on
the list, placing us in a good position to receive planning funds. Dr. Lord also
provided a brief update of the Camden project for the Foundation members.
Other articles, targeting areas in which the University System of Georgia is putting an
emphasis, were distributed:
Higher Education Means Richer Lives
Helping Georgia's Economy Grow
The University System of Georgia's Focus on Quality is Gaining Momentum for Georgia
Accessing Life-Long Learning
Investing in a Child's Future Through Quality Teaching

Dr. Lord also provided information regarding enrollment for the Fall 1998, which showed
a 1.88% enrollment growth in headcount, but a decline in the EFT (-13.4%). She stated that
plans were underway to incorporate some non-traditional approaches to the calendar (e.g., a 3week Maymester) which may assist in overcoming the deficits.
Mr. Acosta recognized Ralph Basham, a former employee of the Secret Service, who is
now Director of the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center, and a new member of the CGCC
Foundation Board. David Smith announced his retirement from Hercules, and stated that he
looks forward to being a continuing member of the Foundation.
p
The next meeting is scheduled for March 2, 1999.
There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 12:10 pm and lunch was
served.

COASTAL GEORGIA COMMUNITY COLLEGE FOUNDATION
Minutes of September 21, 1998 Meeting
PRESENT:
Ray Acosta, Dr. Dorothy Lord, Anita Timmons, Joe Harvey, Mayor Brad Brown
Dr. Doug Tuech, Ray Snow, Dale Keith, Jay Bland, Ken Favell, Melinda Laager,
Holly Christensen, Rees Sumerford, Charlie Rinkevich, Johnny Kauftnan,
Elizabeth Aylward, Charlie Nutt, Tom Saunders, Rebecca Lott, Taylor Adams,
Jimmy McCollum, John McDill, Becky Farrow
The Coastal Georgia Community College Foundation met at 11:00 am in the Satilla Room of the
Coastal Georgia Community College Conference Center. Ray'Acosta presided.
Mr. Acosta welcomed those members present. The approval of the June 3, 1998 minutes was
postponed to the December 1, 1998 meeting.
Mr. Acosta then called for the approval of new Foundation member, Tom Stafford of Gilman
Paper Company. The motion was approved and seconded.
Mr. Acosta stated that he desired to expand the membership of the Foundation to include more
members from surrounding counties, particularly Wayne and Mclntosh. A new membership of six
to ten would be sufficient and a candidate slate will be presented at the next meeting,
Melinda Laager gave an update on "A Day for Coastal Georgia Community College". The
College had a goal of $25,000, but succeeded in surpassing that goal by achieving a total of
$27,390. Ms. Laager stated that the College hopes to double this amount next year and
concluded by thanking the volunteers who helped to make the event a success.
Anita Timmons thanked Ms. Laager for her work in planning "A Day" activities. She followed by
giving an update on the Compton Series. The date for 1999 is set for February 23 and two
speakers are being considered: Bill Moyers and Pat Conroy. She should know by the end of the
week which speaker will be present.
Ms. Laager stated that the Golden Corral Steakhouse will be holding a fundraising event for
Coastal Georgia Community College on September 21, 1998 from 4-6 p.m. The ribbon cutting
will be held at 4:30 p.m. Invitations have been sent out to members of the community inviting
them to have a free dinner. Those present will have the opportunity to make a donation to the
College at this time.
C
Dr. Tuech spoke on semester conversion. There was a two-year curriculum change over and the
process was new to most faculty who were uncertain about management of their new class load.
Developing a semester class schedule came with problems. An enrollment decrease has been
noted at University System schools and Coastal Georgia has experienced a loss of 32 students and
a loss of 16.26% in equivalent full-time units (EFT). This will affect our budget funding base. To
ease the effects of this decrease, a mini-term has been implemented which will begin October 10,
1998 and will run through the first week of December, 1998. Registrations will be accepted
Coastal Georgia Community College Foundation

through October 9, 1998. Dr. Lord gave an explanation of the Regents reasoning behind the
conversion to semesters. She stated that we should recoup our enrollment by next Fall Semester,
if all goes well. The College will be in the process of searching for qualified applicants to fill parttime positions that will become necessary because of semester conversion and the need for greater
flexibility in course scheduling.
Tom Saunders gave an update on the Academic Building renovation. The building was
reoccupied in early summer and is fully ADA compliant. Dr. Lord added that $10,000 from an
Inmate Welfare Trust Fund was used to fund a multi-media classroom in this building.
On October 14, 1998, delegations from University System schools will be attending the
Celebration of the Miller Era in Atlanta. This will be a chance to celebrate the many
accomplishments of Governor Miller. Coastal Georgia Community College will be sending a
delegation of twenty employees and two Foundation representatives to take part in this event.
Dr. Lord announced that October 29, 1998 will be the visitation day from Chancellor Stephen
Portch. He will be visiting each University System institution this fall. Chancellor Portch will
speak to a joint meeting of local area Rotarians at the King and Prince Resort as well as the
College faculty and staff. He will also be present at the ribbon cutting ceremony for the Academic
Building.
The Camden Center permanent facility project has moved up on the capital outlay listing. The
project was originally number eighteen in 1998 and has now moved up to number ten on the list
and it is expected that funding will be received in the 1999 legislative session. We have met two
of the three requirements (land donation and infrastructure donation) and are close to attaining the
operating endowment monies required for this project. The Volunteer firemen of Camden County
are in the process of planning an informal fundraising dinner to aid this project.
Mr. Acosta welcomed Mayor Brad Brown and Taylor Adams of the Sea Island Company to the
meeting. He called upon John McDill to introduce new member Jimmy McCollum. Mr.
McCollum mentioned the influence of Mr. Robert Edenfield in the Camden Center project. Dr.
Lord concurred with Mr. McCollum's comments.
Jay Bland from NationsBank was introduced as a new Foundation member. Mrs. Rebecca Farrow
was introduced as the new Director of Planning and Institutional Research for the College.
There being no further business, the meeting adjourned at 12:00 noon.

Coastal Georgia Community College
Foundation Meeting Minutes
June 3, 1998
Dr. Dorothy Lord, Ray Acosta, Elizabeth Aylward, Kenneth Farrell, Jack
Hartman, Dell Keith, Rebecca Lott, John McDill, Ray Snow, Anita Timmons,
Tom Saunders, Dr. Douglas Tuech, Terrill Thomas, Charlie Nutt, Louise Ringle,
Ben Slade, Rees Sumerford, Rev. E. C. Tillman, Melinda Laager, Holly
Christensen, John Kaufman, Dr. Mollie DeHart, Lynn Gaskins, Betty Coen, and
Charles Wells.
The Coastal Georgia Community College Foundation met in the conference room of the Georgia
Power Building on June 3, 1998, at 11:00 a.m. Mr. Ray Acosta, Chairman, welcomed the
members. Dr. Mollie DeHart presented the minutes of the March 4, 1998, meeting for approval.
The minutes were approved as submitted.
Anita Timmons introduced Melinda Laager, Director of Institutional Advancement, for an update
to the Annual Fund Drive. Ms. Laager stated that $60,072.78 has been donated in unrestricted
funds (which present more of a challenge for donations than restricted funds) with an additional
$17-518,000 earned in interest. The Bush Event was instrumental in providing the largest gain
for the restricted fund.
x'
(
Ray Snow stated that "A Day" scheduled for May 5 had to be rescheduled due to a lack of
volunteers. It is now scheduled for August 25, 1998. Approximately 30-35 people have
volunteered. The database is now in the process of being completed and Mr. Snow asked for all
to participate in this event. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner will be provided for all the volunteers
and the same schedule will be followed as outlined in previous minutes. Volunteers were asked
to call 262-3303 and speak to Ms. Laager or Mr. Snow.
Rebecca Lott reported that the Bush Event raised $92,355 gross revenue with $55,838 in
expenses which included $40,000 to Mrs. Bush. This left a total of $36,517 net for unrestricted
and for seed money for future events. The Foundation members discussed ideas on how to
arrange the room at the Cloister so that more people could attend and consequently sell more
tickets. It was stated that because the event is so labor-intensive, more participation was needed
by the Foundation members. The event was very successful financially and well received in the
community. ColinPowell, former Secretary of State, and Elizabeth Dole, Director of the Red
Cross, were suggested for the next Compton Lecture. It was suggested that Sea Island be
formally thanked for their assistance.
/
Tom Saunders then presented the Annual Financial/Investment Report. He stated that the CGCC
Foundation is in better financial shape than ever, but still needs to do better in unrestricted funds.
Total assets for the Foundation continued to grow, increasing to $ 1,551,129 from just over $1.2
million in FY96. The Endowment funds continue to be managed by what was the Barnett Bank
Trust Department.
Unrestricted assets increased from $72,493.00 to $217,617.00, much of which was due to the
donation of real estate. Restricted assets grew from $346,469.00 to $397,242.00 which included

$10,000 for Pulp & Paper Technology, over $10,000 for Academic Support, $16,509 for
CGMOP, and over $22,000 for Camden Center Support. Specific details on all funds and
balances are available in the Annual Meeting booklet distributed at the meeting. The total return
for the endowment funds portfolio for the year ending June 30, 1997, is 13.47%.
The proposed FY99 budget which has been reviewed and approved by the Finance Committee is
$80,000 in Unrestricted Funds plus $42,275.00 for the Restricted Endowment Funds (total
Foundation budget of $122,275). Mr. Acosta stated that the Unrestricted Budget increased from
$60,000 to $80,000. This included increases in faculty development funds, library, support for
technology in the classroom, the President's Discretionary fund, equipment, advertising and
publications related to semester conversion. The budget was approved as submitted.
Rees Sumerford stated that the Foundation By-Laws should be amended to included the new
college name beginning with FY98. Clarification will be made relating to the language of
trustees vs. members and to increase the membership. A motion was made, seconded and
approved to adopt the amendments.
Ben Slade contacted Colin Powell to inquire about the possibility of his being the next Compton
Lecture Series Keynote Speaker, possibly pro-bono. Mr. Slade will attempt to finalize Mr.
Powell's commitment as speaker as quickly as possible.
Jack Hartman presented the Nominating Committee report. The Trustees nominated for a special
one-year term are Dr. William Laws, Jack Hartman, Joe Harvey, and Charles Rinkevich. The
Trustees nominated for a 2nd three-year term are Elizabeth Aylward, Ray Snow, and Emily
Davenport. New Trustees nominated for a three-year term are Bill Jones, IJJ, Ralph Basham, Jay
Bland, Jeanie Manning, and James R. McCollum. The following were nominees for Foundation
Officers: Ray Acosta, Chairman; Anita Timmons, 1st Vice President; David Smith, 2nd Vice
President; Lynn Gaskins, Treasurer; Tom Saunders, Assistant Treasurer; Dr. Dorothy Lord,
Secretary. A motion was made, seconded, and approved to accept all the nominees. Mr. Acosta
stated that he would like to add several more members from Wayne and Camden counties.
Ms. Betty Coen reported that the Scholarship Committee provided $89,900.00 in awards to 137
students. The average award was $656.00. $11,184.00 in awards were presented to 43 nontraditional students with an average award of $260.00. A total of $101,084.00 was awarded to
180 students, a remarkable achievement for our college compared to other colleges of our size.
C
Ms. Laager announced that a meeting will be held on June 16, 1998, at 7:30 p.m. to discuss
strategies for obtaining the last $100,000 for the Camden Project. On June 24, 1998, there will
be a Golf Tournament at Laurel Links and Oilman Paper Company has been instrumental in
providing assistance. A donor party will be held at Rainbow Island June 29, 1998, at 6:30 p.m.
The "A Day" event has generated much enthusiasm and Ms. Laager asked for support from the
Foundation for this event. She also indicated that Sea Island has requested that a decision be
made concerning the date for the Compton Series Lecture. Ms. Laager informed the Foundation
that CGCC's Schedule of Classes will now be inserted in the Brunswick News and the Camden
CGCC Foundation Minutes
JuneS, 1998
Page 4
Dr. Lord noted several items regarding semester conversion. Semester Conversion will begin
Fall 1998 and August 13 is the first day faculty will return to campus with August 19 as the first
day of classes. May 7, 1999, is graduation, which is a difference of one month. Every course
has been redesigned from 10 to 15 weeks which was a tremendous task and courses had to be
renumbered from 3 to 4 digits. The fee structure had to be redone and students will now pay
three times a year instead of four. In addition, the computer system has been updated. On May
15 the campus celebrated the Death of the Quarter System and'.the Birth of the Semester System
with a mock funeral.
P-16 continues to be very successful with six counties represented which are seeking to improve
student achievement and change community attitudes regarding the value of education. The
council began in April 1996 and still has 30-40 members attending. The members include
representation from the business community, lay public, and human services. At the last
meeting, the challenge of how to increase parental involvement was discussed and each member
was asked to create action plans.
The PREP Program has been very successful and Camden, Glynn, Mclntosh, and Wayne
counties are involved in the homework centers. There was a tremendous response and
improvement in student performance of 1-1 1A letter grades.
The Coastal Georgia Minority Outreach Program will begin on our campus June 15 thru July 17.
This year, participants will be given the opportunity to visit businesses and be exposed to career
options. Dr. Lord chairs this committee with the 14 Black Men of Glynn and it is hoped that the
program can be expanded. This is a collaboration with the Brunswick Rotary Club.
Shannon Scarlet, one of 20 students nationwide, was named to the "Academic All American 1st
Team" by USA Today. Shannon was an 8th grade dropout, obtained his GED, and began CGCC
in Learning Support classes with an SAT score of 1130. He rose from developmental studies to
academic excellence.
In closing, Dr. Lord stated that CGCC is moving in a positive way to accomplish its goals and to
grow. She expressed appreciation to the Foundation for its assistance.
Mr. Acosta thanked the Foundation for all their efforts. There being no further business, the
meeting was adjourned at 12:15 p.m.

Finance Committee Minutes
AprilS, 1999
The Finance Committee of the Coastal Georgia Community College Foundation, Inc. met on April
5, 1999 at 9:15 a.m. in the President's Conference Room at Coastal Georgia Community College.
Finance committee members present were Ray Acosta, Lynn Gaskins, and Tom Saunders. Anita
Timmons, Dr. Dorothy Lord, and Melinda Laager were also in attendance.
Mr. Saunders presented a request to increase the current year unrestricted budget from $ 80,000 to
$ 87,000. A total of $ 9,000 was needed to replace foundation software and to provide annual
maintenance of the new software. The software currently used is not year 2000 compliant and must
be replaced. The publications scholarship was reduced $ 1,000 and the faculty mini-grant budget was
also reduced $ 1,000. The amended budget of $ 87,000 was approved.
Mr. Saunders and Ms. Laager reviewed the revenues and expenses associated with the Compton
Lecture. Revenues totaled $ 57,115.00 while expenses amounted to only $ 22,893.51 yielding a
profit of $ 34,221.49. It was agreed that it would be prudent to allocate one-half or less of the net
proceeds to the unrestricted budget with the reminder allocated to the CGCC endowment fund which
generates unrestricted earnings. The $ 20,000 in restricted funds designated as seed money for future
lectures will remain intact.
Each unrestricted line item was discussed with the committee members. The non-traditional
scholarship was increased from $ 12,000 to $ 14,000. The faculty development/library account was
separated into two accounts. An additional $ 6,000 will be made available for faculty development
activities. Dr. Lord indicated her desire for the institution to create a Faculty Development Center
which would encourage and facilitate the integration of technology into the classroom by the faculty.
The president's discretionary fund was increased $ 1,000, fund drive expense was increased $ 500,
faculty mini-grants was reduced $ 500, publications/brochures was reduced $ 5,000, marketing for
K-12 was increased $ 500, and equipment was increased $ 2,000.
Two new budget items were approved. A total of $ 2,500 is needed for foundation software
maintenance and upgrades and $ 3,000 is needed to replenish the institutional loan fund. The total
unrestricted budget for FY 2000 was set at $ 92,000, a 15% increase from the original FY 1999
budget.
Mr. Saunders also presented his recommendations for the various restricted endowment funds. It was
agreed that the $ 41,075 budget for restricted endowment scholarships was appropriate.
The foundation budget for FY 2000 totals $ 133,075 compared to $ 122,275 for FY 1999. There was
no further business and the meeting adjourned at approximately 10:00 a.m

HIGHLIGHTS
COASTAL GEORGIA COMMUNITY COLLEGE
1997-1998 HIGHLIGHTS
STATE SERVICE
-- The permanent Camden Residence Center facility is in the architectural planning
stages. The center will be located on the gift of 75 acres of land adjacent to the Camden
High School which has already been accepted by the Board of Regents.
- Currently $350,000 as an operating endowment is being raised to demonstrate local
support for the Camden Center as requested by the Board of Regents. A major gift of
$250,000 was given by the Camden County law enforcement agencies to be applied
toward the $350,000 goal. Other gifts from companies and individual donors in the
Camden County area are being accepted. Approximately $31,000 is needed to complete
the endowment of which $23,000.00 has been pledged.
ENROLLMENT
-- CGCC had a 2% average increase in enrollment for the 1997-98 academic year.
f
v

/
TEACHING EXCELLENCE GRANTS
- During the 1997-98 academic year, Coastal Georgia Community College received four
grants through the University System Teaching and Learning Program. These grants funded
such activities as redesigning of the Introductory Chemistry course into a technology infused
course, training for faculty in the Department of Natural Sciences and Mathematics in the
use of calculator-based laboratory equipment, enhancing the organic chemistry laboratory
component through purchase of an infrared spectrophotometer, and updating physics
laboratory instruction and providing equipment to support computer driven, active learning
laboratory experiments. A total of $58,592 was received through these teaching excellence
grants.
TECHNOLOGY
-- CGCC consistently ranked near the top in the number of hours of Georgia Statewide
Academic and Medical System (GSAMS) use for distance learning in the University System
of Georgia FY1997. Projections for FY1998 due to broadcasts to Brunswick from Georgia
Southern's three graduate and undergraduate programs offered on the CGCC campus and
the seven undergraduate programs offered by Armstrong Atlantic State University plus the
broadcasts from Brunswick to the CGCC Camden Center in Kingsland indicate that this
trend would continue. All of these programs are delivered with instructors dividing their
time between the originating site and the receiving site so that students have face to face
interaction as well.
- CGCC is delivering a collaborative associate degree nursing program in Savannah through
distance learning courses which are being received at the campus of Armstrong Atlantic
State University.
- Armstrong Atlantic State University collaborates with CGCC in offering a Dental Hygiene
program in Brunswick via Distance Learning for the students who after completing general
education courses at CGCC are admitted to the Dental Hygiene program at AASU.
Students are then able to complete clinical experience in Savannah and a limited number
of courses at AASU without having to travel for the entire program of study.
i
ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT
-- A major component of activity for the president is direct involvement in economic
development in support of the Brunswick/Glynn Development Authority, assisting in making
presentations to numerous relocation prospects, including representing Georgia Quick Start.
-- CGCC is engaged in an IBM partnership in preparing persons to work with the IBM
AS400 System. Courses have been specifically developed to support the AS400, and IBM
has donated $360,000 in software for the program.
-- CGCC is collaborating with Valdosta State University and Abraham Baldwin Agricultural
College in an Intellectual Capital and Partnership Program (ICAPP) to address regional
workforce needs in Information Technology.
-- President Dorothy L. Lord was awarded the Glenn Bryant Award for leadership in
Economic Development by the Coastal Region of Georgia and the Coastal Area District
Development Authority in 1997.
COLLABORATION
-- CGCC is engaged in collaboration with Armstrong Atlantic State University, East Georgia
College, Georgia Southern University, and Savannah State University to create the Liberty
Center which will provide University System courses and programs to the Fort Stewart and
Hunter Army Bases and to Liberty County.
^
-- CGCC has just begun to collaborate with Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College to meet
environmental horticulture technology program needs in the coastal region with an emphasis
on golf and grounds management. CGCC will provide the general education and learning
support courses, and ABAC will provide the technical courses on site at the various area
golf facilities.
-- CGCC is actively involved locally and statewide with the DHR, DOL, and DTAE
collaboration, Georgia Work Connections, through its New Connections to Work and
Fatherhood Initiative.
INTERNATIONALIZATION
-- Six faculty members have traveled abroad as part of the University System emphasis on
international experience for faculty and students. Faculty have visited South Africa (two
faculty), Germany, United Kingdom, Indonesia, Liberia, and China (two faculty). An
Instructor of Art taught at Roehampton (England) during Summer 1998.
V
MODEL PROGRAMS
-- The Manufacturing Maintenance Technology program developed to assist in meeting the
workforce needs of Georgia Pacific Paper and Bleached Board Division (Brunswick Plant)
has been regarded as a national model in meeting workforce needs. The program continues
to be very successful and has become a threshold requirement both for initial employment
and for promotion of existing employees at the Brunswick Plant in the area of maintenance.
GP paid for three full-time faculty members for three years until State funds could be
V
provided through the University System funding formula and by the Department of
Technical and Adult Education.
The Coastal Georgia Minority Outreach Program is a drop-out intervention program for
seventh grade African American males who are unlikely to complete high school. This
program has been featured as a model program by the Southern Association of Community,
Junior, and Technical Colleges at the 1997 annual meeting, in the Community College Week
publication in December 1997, and in Black Issues in Higher Education in January 1998.
Funding for this program is through private sources solicited on an annual basis by the
president since 1993. Average annual cost: $30,000. Many colleges have sought detailed
information about this project for replication.
-- With the completion of the Academic Building Renovation Project, Coastal Georgia
Community College opened its model classroom, a state-of-the-art language lab facility.
READINESS ENRICHMENT PROGRAM (PREP)
PREP exceeds the basic requirements of the System's PREP program. The program
includes Homework Centers operated in an after school time frame from 3:30-5:00 p.m.
(Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday) in each middle school in Glynn, Camden, Wayne, and
Mclntosh Counties. This program has received accolades in each county where it operates
for the improvement in student achievement which has occurred. This program is closely
aligned with the CGCC sponsored P-16 Council which is kept abreast of PREP
developments and gives advice regarding the program. P-16 and PREP are closely
connected at CGCC.
The CGCC sponsored P-16 Council is a sub-unit of the Armstrong Atlantic State
University sponsored Southeast Georgia P-16 Council. The geographic proximity of the six
lower coastal counties (Glynn, Camden, Mclntosh, Wayne, Brantley, Charlton) allows
greater involvement of business, human services, educators (superintendents, school board
members, curriculum coordinators, middle school principals). Department of Labor, Georgia
Department of Industry, Trade, and Tourism workforce coordinator, and economic
development authority persons. This cross-section of persons is vitally interested in the P16 agenda and the local Council has pledged its concern with improving student achievement
for postsecondary education and for employment. This orientation to workforce preparation
has been very strong and has positioned the CGCC P-16 Council for readiness to apply for
a School to Work grant as part of the recently approved new $6 million grant for Georgia.
The current emphasis of this Council is to improve parental involvement with schools.
MRR FUNDING
- Coastal Georgia Community College received over $1,500,000 in the last four fiscal years.
In 1997-98 the college received $402,600 for numerous MRR projects.
C
MAJOR CAPITAL OUTLAY
- Coastal Georgia Community College has the #10 position on the capital priority list for
the $17.5 million Camden Center facility.
