We are certainly deserving of the passage of the Marketing (Blessed Fr. Basile) Moreau course! More meaningful; however, are the answers to the questions that delve into the specifics as to how, exactly Notre Dame High School is educating the hearts and minds of its students. Questions like these (as recently formulated by Fr. Bernard LaFreniere, Br. Joel Giallanza and Br. Donald Blauvelt in their publication of “Holy Cross Education: A Spiritual Legacy”) to Holy Cross educators: How is Holy Cross education a work of resurrection for me? In which ways have you witnessed a transformation taking place in students through your efforts as an educator? How have I experienced that God is a part of what I do as a Holy Cross educator? “Thank you for supporting Each of our teachers at Notre Dame can answer these questions in their own way based on their own experiences. There is no doubt in my mind that every one of our teachers answers affirmatively to all of these questions. When Joe Namath was asked why he predicted his 1969 New York Jets team was going to win the Super Bowl as a 16-point underdog versus the mighty Baltimore Colts, he unhesitatingly acclaimed, “It ain’t bragging if you do it.” Similarly, when I boast about how great our teachers and staff are at Notre Dame, it ain’t bragging. The mere fact that we ask these questions of ourselves as Holy Cross educators makes Notre Dame and our fellow Holy Cross schools special. Notre Dame High School and the Holy Cross legacy I reflect in gratitude on the 2013-14 school year for those listed in this report who contributed so much to the success of the year. Our successes and achievements, large and small, come from every corner of the campus with the acute awareness by faculty and staff that even the smallest amount of encouragement can make the world of difference to an individual and unique student. of educating Thank you for supporting Notre Dame High School and the Holy Cross legacy of educating hearts and minds. Every one of our alumni, parents, students and friends is contributing in some way by enrolling their children, by making charitable gifts, by offering service and by prayer. Ours is a mission that does not merely hope for survival, rather; it must continue to thrive and it demands perpetuation. May God continue to bless the Brothers of the Holy Cross and Notre Dame High School. Go Knights! Brett A. Lowart President hearts and minds.” PAGE 4 School News School News Spirit Day 2014 Notre Dame Fall Sports Rally As students prepared for spirit week, a Fall rally was held inside the gym The 2014 school year kicked off with Spirit to build up the spirit of fall sports and school pride. The event was held in the Holy Cross Center Courtyard with alumnae from the classes of 1986-2013. Many alumnae were in attendance as well as a number of former teachers who were instrumental in the early years. The celebration included stpeakers representing the span of the past three decades. Racquel Roberge-Turner ‘89, Mary Strong ‘91 and Sierra Hauser-Price Elizabeth ‘01 provided insightful descriptions during their time at ND and Coach Ann McClung was honored for being an inspiration to female students since 1985. School History by Barbara Vining The first day of school in 1983 was different from the previous 36 first days of school at Notre Dame because on this September day 185 girls showed up, ending the all-boys era at Notre Dame High School. Social forces had been building since the mid ‘60s to bring ND to the point of admitting female students. An economic crisis in the late ‘70s, along with falling Catholic school enrollment and shrinking rosters of nuns and brothers prompted many single sex schools to go coeducational. ND, at one point on a Holy Cross list for possible closure, entered into talks with the nuns at Our Lady of Corvallis in Studio City about combining the two schools but no agreement could be reached. English teacher Deneen Narwitz Grist ‘86 was a sophomore in the original group of girls. “After a couple of weeks it was like we were always here,” she says. “We joined whatever we could. We made our place here as fast as we could. We felt like we were Knights from the beginning. ” forms and the boys didn’t. The girls wore gray or light blue box-pleated skirts with white Oxford-cloth shirts. The boys, within the confines of the dress code, wore whatever they wanted. Everyone was required to wear leather shoes. No sneakers or athletic shoes were allowed. Just as the girls were eased into the population at Notre Dame, girls sports were introduced gradually, starting the first year with mostly junior varsity teams according to the '84 Arches. The first year we fielded teams in JV volleyball, softball and basketball and varsity tennis. Girls At the first coed graduation in 1986, Mrs. Grist and the also ran track and cross country. Varsity teams and soccer, other girls wore light blue caps and gowns while the boys water polo and golf came later. wore darker blue. And that year also featured dual valedictorians, a boy and a girl. In 1985, Ann McClung was hired to teach physical education and coach girls athletics. She is now our Dean of Women and has coached girls golf to 12 Mission League Championships in the last 13 years and CIF Championships in three of the last four years. Racquel Roberge-Turner ‘89, Mary Strong ‘91, Ann McClung (Dean of Women), and Sierra Hauser-Price Elizabeth ‘01 take a photo together Father Bitterman, of the Sulpician community, was brought down from Saint Francis High School in Mountain View to oversee the transition. He was principal from 1980 until 1986, working closely with the newly formed Board of Trustees and parent Joseph Allegretti '56 to ensure a smooth welcome for the girls, which included extending the gym to add space for girls athletics and physical education and adding extra ladies restrooms on campus. Most eyewitnesses who are still around say there wasn’t much opposition to the plan although some older alumni objected to the loss of the all-boys tradition. “I was all for it,” says Athletic Director Kevin Rooney, who had been brought down from Saint Francis by Father Bitterman in 1981. “I came from a coed school and it seemed like the normal thing to me.” One quirk of the transition was that the girls wore uni- Bridget Ferrero ‘88 and Lee Dorney-Chumo ‘88 reunite as classmates Principal Stevie Connelly shares words with the alumnae gathered in celebration of 30 Years of Women at Notre Dame High School Everyone who was here then agrees that going co-ed was a logical step for ND. “It made the boys better behaved,” says Mr. Rooney. “Before, if a girl was on campus, the boys would be hanging out the windows. I guess they weren’t serious, but the boys became better behaved.” In the fall of ‘85, ground was broken for the Allegretti office and classroom complex in the area between the Woodman and Riverside buildings (now St. André Besette and Moureau Halls), adding six classrooms, expanded library space, offices and, most importantly, one girls bathroom. Made possible through the generosity of Mr. Allegretti, the new building was dedicated in 1987 as part of the celebration of ND’s 40th anniversary. Notre Dame is going strong 30 years after the first girls came. These days we get up to 900 applications for a freshman class of about 340. Athletic teams for boys and girls are robust. And in the circle of life department, a grandson of Mr. Allegretti graduated last year and Mrs. Grist’s two daughters are students at Notre Dame, set to graduate in 2016 and 2017. Karen Ljubetic-Franquiz ‘91, Joe Spelta ‘81, Scott Hamilton, Kate Peeler ‘05 and ND President Brett Lowart share memories during the event “It was brilliant for Notre Dame to go coed,” says Stevie Connelly, since 1996 the first female principal at Notre Dame. “A coed school brings out the best in both boys and girls.” PAGE 14 Golf Tournament Auction & Gala 28th Annual Scholarship Golf Tournament PAGE 15 Notre Dame Luau Knight Auction & Gala The 28th Annual Golf Tournament continued its tradition Notre Dame is blessed to have extremely strong enrollof golf and friendship on May 12 at Robinson Ranch in Santa Clarita.
