16 Oct - 26 Nov 2015
16 Oct - 26 Nov 2015 Welcome The waiting is almost over as we open our doors to SPECTRE on 26 October. It’s the 24th outing for 007 and the fourth for Daniel Craig, and is expected to be the most actionpacked Bond yet. Christmas Dinner Two Courses £20pp Three Courses £25pp (15 - 28 people) Christmas Finger Buffet £16.50pp (20 - 36 people) Fans of the much-anticipated British drama film Suffragette will be pleased to hear that we are showing the BFI compilation Make More Noise!: Suffragettes In Silent Film on 27 October. Based on the novel of the same name, John Crowley’s Brooklyn stars Saoirse Ronan as young Irish immigrant Eilis Lacey, who navigates her way through 1950s Brooklyn and is soon swept off her feet by a new romance. But when life is disrupted by her past, she must choose between two countries. There’s another great performance from Maggie Smith as she plays the title role in The Lady In The Van, the true story of writer Alan Bennett’s relationship with the woman who ‘temporarily’ parked her van in his driveway and then stayed for 15 years. Book early to avoid disappointment For half-term entertainment there’s the new fantasy adventure Pan, with Levi Miller as Peter Pan and Hugh Jackman as Blackbeard; and Bill, the British family comedy from the team behind the children’s TV series Horrible Histories. Our Abbeygate Arts programme is just too full to mention for the coming weeks – full listings can be found on page 16. There are Cult Film Club screenings of Quentin Tarantino’s dark romantic comedy True Romance – which means a free pint of Old Cannon beer with each ticket purchased – and a special anniversary screening of Back To The Future Part II. And finally, our chef has worked hard to produce this year’s Christmas menu for private parties of 15 or more. Email us at info@abbeygatecinema.co.uk for further information. Andrea Holmes Marketing Manager Don't Miss bookatable@abbeygatecinema.co.uk The Lady In The Van (12A) 01284 754 477 Magie Smith gives a show-stealing performance in this joyous, multilayered comedy drama. Starring: Carey Mulligan, Meryl Streep, Helena Bonham Carter. UK 2015. 106 mins. Director: Justin Kurzel. Starring: Michael Fassbender, Marion Cotillard. UK/France/USA. 113 mins. This extraordinary retelling of William Shakespeare’s story of a king driven to murder and madness preserves the dark poetry of the Bard’s play, but presents it with remarkable style and vision. Macbeth, played by Michael Fassbender, is a man of war: we see him at the centre of the carnage in climactic, eye-popping battle scenes. While in a strangely calm trance, he meets a troupe of witches who foretell his future. Consumed by ambition, he is intrigued when the prophecy starts to come true. But it is his wife, Lady Macbeth (Oscar winner Cotillard), who takes the initiative and hatches a plot to kill beloved King Duncan and seize his crown by force. The cast give superb performances, delivering dialogue with spellbinding, understated intensity. Director Kurzel infuses the 12th century with dread, paranoia and violence, bringing Shakespeare’s words chillingly to life. 4 www.abbeygatecinema.co.uk The inspiringly kick-ass history of Britain’s early feminist movement is powerfully recreated in Suffragette, written by Abi Morgan (Shame) and directed by Sarah Gavron (Brick Lane). Carey Mulligan stars as Maud, a young factory worker who discovers the cause in the early 1900s. Her colleague, Violet (Anne-Marie Duff), is campaigning for votes for women, and Maud hesitantly begins to take an interest, eventually becoming radicalised by a fierce world of hunger strikes, guerrilla tactics and brutal government reprisals. Mulligan is joined by Meryl Streep as the fearless feminist leader Emmeline Pankhurst, alongside Romola Garai as upper-class campaigner Alice, Natalie Press as Emily Wilding Davison, and Helena Bonham Carter as a local chemist who uses her shop as a secret base for meetings. With its world-class cast and stirring story, Suffragette is not just entertaining, but also vibrant with cultural relevance. Contains infrequent strong language, moderate violence and a scene of force-feeding. facebook.com/Abbeygatecinema @Abbeygate_bury 5 Films From 23 October 24 – 26 October From 26 October Pan (PG) Bill (PG) Spectre (Cert TBC) Director: Joe Wright. Starring: Hugh Jackman, Levi Miller, Rooney Mara. USA 2015. 111 mins. Director: Richard Bracewell. Starring: Mathew Baynton, Damian Lewis, Helen McCrory, Martha Howe-Douglas. UK 2015. 94 mins. Director: Sam Mendes. Starring: Daniel Craig, Christoph Waltz, Ralph Fiennes. UK/USA 2015. TBC mins. With more than six movie versions of J. M. Barrie’s beloved tale to reference, director Joe Wright (Pride And Prejudice) manages to deliver a magnificently inventive take on the orphan boy who refuses to grow up. With nary a member of the Darling family in sight, Wright’s film concentrates on Peter’s origins. Newcomer Levi Miller plays Pan, who, believing that he’ll eventually meet his mother “in this world… or another”, finds himself in a fantastical land. There he must defend various outlandish characters from the evil pirate Blackbeard (Jackman) – and in a mighty twist on the original, he’s aided by a young James ‘Captain’ Hook (Garrett Hedlund, Inside Llewyn Davis). Wright’s boldly eclectic cast includes also Amanda Seyfried, Kathy Burke, Rooney Mara (as warrior-princess Tiger Lily) and Cara Delevingne… as a mermaid! The team behind BBC TV’s Horrible Histories have concocted an uproarious explanation for William Shakespeare’s so-called lost years. According to screenwriters Ben Willbond and Laurence Rickard, “hopeless lute player Bill Shakespeare leaves his family and home to follow his dream… a tale of murderous kings, spies, lost loves, and a plot to blow up Queen Elizabeth I.” As in the popular and ingenious TV series, the six regular cast members play multiple roles, with Mathew Baynton as the Bard. Here they are also joined by Damian Lewis as Sir Richard Hawkins and Helen McCrory as Queen Elizabeth. Bill will certainly delight newcomers and fans of Horrible Histories alike. 2D & 3D AL CI LY MI 6 www.abbeygatecinema.co.uk AL CI LY MI FA T F- L HA M ER E SP His fourth outing in the post-Ian Fleming franchise sees Daniel Craig’s James Bond motivated by events deep in his own past to track down and neutralise the dark force known as SPECTRE. Meanwhile, MI6’s Gareth Mallory (Fiennes) has taken over from Judi Dench as M, and in doing so finds himself fighting to save a discredited secret service. Bond soon realises that to defeat his sinister foe he must protect Madeleine (Léa Seydoux), the daughter of Casino Royale’s villainous Mr White – and it also won’t hurt to seduce the widow (Monica Bellucci) of a man he’s already killed. Wild action sequences, sardonic humour and familiar faces – Ben Whishaw as the nerdy Q, Naomie Harris as Moneypenny – provide all the Bondness we crave and more… with Christoph Waltz as SPECTRE’s über-nasty boss providing the more. OW N LE FA T F- L HA M ER E SP N SO T E SA K TIC facebook.com/Abbeygatecinema @Abbeygate_bury 7 Films From 6 November Brooklyn (12A) From 13 November The Lady In The Van (12A) Director: John Crowley. Starring: Saoirse Ronan, Domhnall Gleeson, Julie Walters. Ireland/UK 2015. 112 mins. Director: Nicholas Hytner. Starring: Maggie Smith, Alex Jennings, Roger Allam. UK 2015. 104 mins. Set in the 1950s, when Irish economic migration was at its height, this good-hearted adaptation of Colm Tóibín’s bestseller stars Saoirse Ronan (Hanna) as Eilis Lacey, who leaves rural Wexford for a menial job and a rackety boarding house in the eponymous Brooklyn. Run by the sharp-tongued Mrs Kehoe (Walters, hilarious), her new digs lead to a mutually supportive relationship with a local priest (an avuncular Jim Broadbent), chaste church socials, and eventually a romance with Tony, an Irish-American boy (Emory Cohen). Ultimately Eilis has to choose between her new love and a beau back home (Gleeson), and between the life she left in Ireland and the one unfolding in the New World. Nick Hornby’s sensitive but never syrupy screenplay is perceptively implemented by director John Crowley (Boy A). Maggie Smith reprises the role she played in Alan Bennett’s hit stage play as the elderly Miss Shepherd, a lady who occupied a decrepit Bedford van parked in Bennett’s Camden Town driveway for some 15 years. Having directed the play, Nicholas Hytner (The Crucible, The Madness Of King George) now helms Bennett’s screen adaptation to delightful, multilayered effect. Miss Shepherd is no slave to personal hygiene or polite diplomacy. Smith’s wonderful take on this cantankerous English eccentric is well matched by Alex Jennings, who plays Bennett as he becomes Miss Shepherd’s somewhat bemused benefactor and astringent observer. Roger Allam, Frances de la Tour and James Corden (star of Bennett’s The History Boys) also add considerably to this joyous, socially contemplative comedy drama, but, as ever, Smith steals the show. Contains infrequent strong language and moderate sex. 8 www.abbeygatecinema.co.uk Contains infrequent strong language. facebook.com/Abbeygatecinema @Abbeygate_bury 9 Family Films Big Scream Every Saturday at 10.30. Famously taciturn throughout his life and even a recluse in his later years, Marlon Brando nevertheless kept an intensely personal audio diary comprising many hours of personal reflections and recollections over several decades. In these intimate cassette recordings we hear Brando talking about his childhood, career and often tragic family relationships. The result is certainly the most fascinating and rounded portrait ever offered of this 20th-century screen legend. Opening with its subject’s claim that “to scandalise is a right, to be scandalised For two decades a rich São is a pleasure,” Ferrara’s Paulo doctor and his ambitious tribute to Pier Paolo Pasolini wife have relied on the warm, benefits from a superb central quietly efficient Val (popular performance by Willem Dafoe. Brazilian TV actor Casé) We see affectionate family not only to keep house, but gatherings, scenes fashioned also as a surrogate mother from his posthumously to their late-teenaged son published novel-cum-journal Fabinho (Joelsas). When Petrolio, a harrowing portrayal Val’s estranged student of his murder, and much more daughter Jéssica (Márdila) in a fascinating and highly unexpectedly arrives in town, personal portrait of the genius the ordered social dynamic filmmaker. of the household is disrupted. The performances have a beautifully nuanced emotional precision. facebook.com/Abbeygatecinema Margherita (Buy) is a director making a realist drama about a factory strike. Her relationships are foundering and her mother is seriously ill. The one constant in her life is her brother Giovanni (Moretti). Margherita must also contend with the antics of the star of her film, larger-than-life actor Barry Huggins (Turturro). His hilarious outbursts add light yet never trivial comedy to this intelligent, witty and poignant story. @Abbeygate_bury 13 Special Event Documentary Thu 5 Nov, 18.00 Sun 15 Nov, 15.30 Sun 22 Nov, 15.30 Addicted To Sheep Orion: The Man Who Would Be King (PG) Draw On Sweet Night (12A) Plus Q&A with director Tony Britten Director: Tony Britten. Starring: Doon Mackichan, Nicky Henson, Mark Arends. UK 2015. 86 mins. Madrigalist John Wilbye spent his entire working life in the service of Sir Thomas and Lady Elizabeth Kytson. After 1609 he appears to have stopped composing, yet Lady Elizabeth kept him on, even giving him the tenancy of a prosperous local sheep farm. So why, when she died in 1628, did he leave it all behind? This sumptuously photographed drama is a collaboration with the renowned vocal group I Fagiolini. Contains moderate sex and infrequent moderate bad language. (PG) Director: Magali Pettier. UK 2015. 86 mins. Beautifully observed and laugh-out-loud funny, this heartwarming film charts a year in the life of a tenant hill farmer and his family as they try to breed the perfect sheep. Through rain, shine, sleet and snow we see them toil away against the stunning landscapes of north-east England. A treat for the senses, Addicted To Sheep allows us to experience life on a hill farm – without having to get mucked in ourselves. Director: Jeanie Finlay. UK 2015. 86 mins. This engaging documentary from Jeanie Finlay (The Great Hip Hop Hoax) reveals the bizarre story of a great musical deception. From 1979 obscure singer Jimmy Ellis pretended to be someone who had died in 1977, namely Elvis Presley. Ellis was inspired by a novel which posited that Presley had faked his own death. Sounding remarkably like ‘the King’, Ellis performed throughout America wearing a bandit mask. This film uncovers the extraordinary truth behind one of the most alluring myths in show-business history. Contains infrequent strong language and moderate sex references. 14 www.abbeygatecinema.co.uk 15 Abbeygate Arts Sat 17 Oct, 17.55 Wed 4 Nov, 12.30 Met Opera Live: Otello Met Opera Encore: Tannhäuser Mon 19 Oct, 12.00 & 1900 NT Encore: Hamlet Sun 8 Nov, 15.00 Wed 21 Oct, 12.00 Bolshoi Ballet Captured Live: Jewels NT Encore: Hamlet Thu 12 Nov, 19.15 Wed 21 Oct, 12.30 ROH Live: Four Short Ballets Met Opera Encore: Otello Thu 19 Nov, 19.00 Wed 21 Oct, 19.00 NT Captured Live: Of Mice And Men RSC Live: Henry V Thu 22 Oct, 12.00 & 19.00 Sat 21 Nov, 17.30 Met Opera Live: Lulu Sat 31 Oct, 16.00 Wed 25 Nov, 12.30 Met Opera Encore: Lulu Met Opera Live: Tannhäuser Mon 2 Nov, 20.00 ENO Captured Live: The Barber Of Seville Thu 26 Nov, 19.00 Branagh Theatre Live: The Winter's Tale Met Opera: Lulu NT Encore: Hamlet Pre-order your food and drink Abbeygate Arts Newsletter Whether you’d like a drink and a snack for the interval or something more substantial before or after your Abbeygate Arts event, pre-book your order and we’ll have everything waiting for you. info@abbeygatecinema.co.uk (allow at least 24 hours' notice).
