CSGC News27 - The County Sligo Golf Club
Divoting will take place the
last Tuesday of each month
starting 31 May.
Meeting at 1st Tee at 6.30pm
All Volunteers Welcome!
Here comes the Summer and it’s hard to believe that already I am half way through my Lady Captain’s year with the busiest part of the season yet to come. The Ladies Club is a hive of activity with our weekly
competitions , club ,inter club matches and the with the launch of our Summer League next week we have no excuses but to get out playing and enjoy our beautiful course.
The Interclub matches are in full swing in both clubs with many of our teams in action over the past week. On Thursday last the Minor Cup team under the Captaincy of Una Gleeson had a great win against Ballina.
Also well done to Carmel Hatt and her team who beat Castle Dargan, both teams are now in the Quarter Finals in June. Good luck to Mary Kennedy and her Intermediate Team who play Ballina on Saturday and the
Mixed Foursomes Team who play today against Carrick-on-Shannon. A big thank-you to all the ladies who give their time to represent the Club at home and away. We would encourage you to support our teams
whenever possible.
The Get into Golf programme on Thursday nights has grown in numbers with 34 ladies signed up. Well done to Valerie and we look forward to welcoming these ladies as potential new members in the future.
On Friday 3rd of June we have the launch the Nine Wine & Dine Summer Social Foursomes. The Mixed League has 10 teams entered and I would like to wish my Team ‘The Swingers’ the best of luck. Well done to Vice Captains Tom and Margaret all of the details are below in the newsletter.
Enjoy the Summer Season and remember
In golf as in life, it’s the follow through that makes the difference.

QUIZ
Q1 After missing a short
putt Mark throws his
club in the air in
frustration.
Unfortunately, he
doesn’t catch it cleanly
on the way down and it
falls onto his ball,
moving it away from
the hole. What is the
ruling?
Q2 If the ball had still
been moving when the
player’s club hit it, what
would be the ruling?
Q3 Your ball is
embedded in a closely
mown path in the
middle of the
rough. Do you have to
play it as it lies?

COURSE MANAGER REPORT
•The lower putting/chipping green will re-open in early June 2016
•The 18th Green extension should be ready for play in early July. The new bunker on the left of the
Green is now complete and work on the right hand side bunker is still continuing.
•Green speed over the next couple of weeks will be below average, around 8.5ft on the
Stimpmeter. This is due to recent necessary over-seeding and fertiliser applications. Also, due to the
good weather and rising temperatures, we have had a lot of extra growth resulting in slower green
speeds. Last summer average green speed was between 9 – 9.3ft. Light Top Dressing and rolling will
help to get speeds back to normal.
•All green surrounds have been treated and sprayed with Rescue to remove Rye Grass and improve the
appearance and playability of the surfaces around the Greens. Slight browning/thinning of course
grasses may be visible as the herbicide takes effect. Once the undesirable grasses have died back,
there will be some bare areas. Regular over-seeding with Fescue/Bent Grasses will soon correct
this. This work should not adversely affect play as we continue to improve the playing surfaces.

Team News: It has been a very busy week with three Ladies interclub matches with success for the Minor Cup team and the
challenge cup team and unfortunately a loss for the Junior Foursomes team.
Good luck to the teams as they progress to the next round.
JUNIOR FOURSOMES TEAM
On Saturday 21st May the Junior Foursomes played Enniscrone G.C. in Strandhill, a
neutral venue.
The team was Miriam Mulligan and Caroline Bradshaw, Grainne Demmel and Michelle
McGarraghy and Julie Harrison and Vivienne Foley with Una Gleeson as the sub. The
matches were closely fought with one match each and it was down to the 18th hole to
see what our fate would be. Unfortunately the team lost. Thank you to all the panel
for your commitment and hard work in trying to get us over the line.

AIG Challenge Cup 2016
County Sligo Ladies Challenge Cup team of Jean Barr, Rosie Mullan, Maire Dufficey, Ann Sheridan,
Patsy McElhone and sub Marian McGillen played Castle Dargan with 3 matches away and 2 home.
Co Sligo beat Castle Dargan GC 3-2 in a nail biting thriller on Monday evening. With the match at
two games all, the team members and spectators had to wait while Patsy McElhone, caddied by
Deirdre Connolly, fought back from two holes down on the 10th hole at Castle Dargan to win her
game on the 17th and clinch the match for the Sligo girls. Ann Sheridan scored a noticeable birdie on
the 7th at Castle Dargan. Captain Carmel congratulated the ladies on the great win and thanked all
the caddies and supporters. They will now face the Donegal team in the quarter finals on Monday
20th June.

MINOR CUP TEAM
Last Thursday 19th May the Minor cup team did Co. Sligo Golf Club Ladies branch proud. They beat Ballina with
2 wins at home and 1 away. Gay Hynes and Patricia McLoughlin played at home winning 6/5 and 4/3
respectively. Catherine Roche, Rita Walsh and Marie McTiernan played in Ballina winning 6/5 and halving the
rest. They were fantastic and as Captain of the team I want to thank them for their effort and commitment to
the team . We had 5 wonderful caddies Helen Clarke, Claudette Murphy, Una Howley, Alice Flanagan, and
Dolores Barrett who were the players advisors and kept them all calm and focused. Our 2 subs Eileen Brady and
Martina Sherlock were ready to step in when needed and a special thanks to Vivienne Foley ( vice captain) .
Thank you to all the supporters who followed the team in Rosses Point in terrible weather conditions. We are
through to the quarter finals which will take place in Enniscrone on June 9th with 3 matches away and 2 at
home. Onwards and upwards.

Castlebar Golf Club was the venue last Saturday for the
inaugural Golf & Social get-together between Co. Sligo G. C.
Male Voice Choir and Mayo Male Voice Choir! Thank you to all
the choir members who travelled for the event.
We were warmly welcomed by the current Captain of Castlebar
G. C., Frank Murray, who also happens to be a member of the
Mayo M.V.C.
The golf was played in good weather conditions and our hosts
laid on a most enjoyable meal afterwards in the clubhouse!
Local knowledge prevailed on the day and the Mayo lads came
out narrowly on top to win the trophy! The man who mooted
the event initially, Eamon Horkan, was also present, despite his
busy schedule preparing for the Mayo International Choral
Festival next weekend.
Pictured are Joe Kelly of Co. Sligo G. C. M. V. C. presenting the
trophy to Frank Murray of Mayo M. V. C.
A local win is planned for the return event in Rosses Point in
