SHANNON September|October 2012 The Garden of Hope PAGE 2 A Place Where Hope Lives Shannon is proud to open this month an outdoor space designed for cancer patients and their families. Located just outside the Shannon Oncology Center, The Garden of Hope welcomes anyone whose life has been touched by the difficult test of cancer. It is a place where patients may rest and relax or choose to receive their therapy while being surrounded by nature. The garden provides a beautiful healing landscape for patients indoors as well, as they can enjoy its beauty from the large windows inside the oncology treatment room. “Seeing other cancer centers with similar outdoor projects generated interest in bringing this concept to the Shannon Oncology Center,” Dr. David Cummings, Medical Oncologist and Medical Director of the Shannon Oncology Center, said. “The Garden was designed to provide a unique healing environment for patients and their families while they receive their treatments.” Among a path of warm stone and brick pavers shaped in a tear drop, rests a garden of beautiful flowers and shrubs. The soothing sound of water and peaceful places to sit to witness each particular spirit of the garden, play host to a beautiful, substantial oak that provides cool shade, shelter and strength. The garden also includes a dedicated cross guarded by three grand, white boulders where individuals may reflect in prayer. Two curved walls, one beginning at the oak and the other ending at an east iron gate, sway and curve to give rise to an angel of hope residing in the northeast corner. “The fact that this project is now completed is a testament to the dedication and generosity of many friends and supporters in our community,” Dr. Cummings said. “We are grateful to all who helped bring this project to life and helped create a lasting place of hope for cancer patients in San Angelo and the Concho Valley.” The Garden of Hope serves as a testament to our community’s love for one another and a lasting contribution for individuals and families through gifts dedicated to those who have been touched by cancer. To provide patient and families with a place to find solace and serenity while creating an atmosphere of healing for the mind, body and spirit, will always be the promise of The Garden of Hope. Contributions may be made in honor of a loved one and are available at varying levels, beginning at $25. Personalized pavers are also available for purchase. For more information, please contact Suzi Reynolds at (325) 657-8343. Please join us for a special tour at The Garden of Hope Open House, Friday, September 7 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Parking is available at the Shannon Medical Plaza, 102 N. Magdalen. The Garden sits on the north side of the building off of Koberlin Street. Associate Accomplishments Daisy Award The April Daisy Award winner is Brenda Madrano, RN, 4S.
